100LL Price Increase
VFC on Twitter
VFC has been able to hold its aircraft rental rates for the past three years with the exception of a fuel surcharge applied for five months in the summer of 2008. The surcharge was removed in October 2008 when prices stabilized. Unfortunately a significant upward trend in the cost of fuel has begun again and it appears that it will continue for some time. To manage this increase we will reluctantly have to reinstate the fuel surcharge on aircraft rentals during the month of January 2011.
The Victoria Flying Club has recently joined Twitter. For those unfamiliar, Twitter is a social media website which allows an individual or organization to post short, timely updates. You can receive Twitter updates, called Tweets, by choosing to follow the persons or organizations of interest to you. VFC will use Twitter to keep our members informed and up to date on all the latest happenings around the club. You can join us on Twitter, by searching for @FlyVFC on twitter.com. Or, click on the link below.
Similarly we anticipate members who buy fuel from us will see some sharp fluctuations in our retail price over the next few months.

Please direct any questions regarding the reimplementation of this surcharge and fuel pricing in general to Gerry Mants at the Club.

With the Season 2 premier of Ice Pilots NWT set to air on the History Channel January 12th, The Patrician got in touch with Chris Barton to get some inside scoop. Barton, 22, is well known at the Victoria Flying Club, having completed his Commercial licence here, and worked on the line crew for three years. Chris now works for Buffalo Airways, one of Canada’s most unique airlines. He’s not the only VFC pilot to venture north. Chris Mathison spent some time with Buffalo Airways before moving on to another airline, and Graeme Ferguson is currently with Buffalo. Curious about life in the North, and the world of Buffalo Airways, The Patrician had a few questions for Chris. What is your position with Buffalo Airways? At Buffalo I am a Flight attendant on the DC-3/ Rampie/Courier Driver. Anything else that needed to get done, I’d probably do that too.
What is an average day like for you at work? An average day at Buffalo, as a rampie, usually starts about 6am. Help get the C-46 ready for its food/mail flight up the Mackenzie Valley, then the “sched” (scheduled flight) lands. You’ll off-load all the freight, help sort it into delivery vans. If they need you on a route then you would do that all day. If not, you do odd jobs all day outside or in the hangar. In the afternoon you help get the sched ready for its flight back to Hay River. On a good day, you’re home by about 5:30pm. The weather is a little different from down in Victoria. What is it like working outside in such cold temperatures? Working in the cold isn’t so bad. I think the average winter temp is about –23. You get used to it. I definitely notice when it dips below –30 though. Coldest I’ve worked outside in is –52 including wind chill. What has been your best experience so far?
How did you land the job? I got hired at Buffalo off an email I sent them. I think I got pretty lucky though. I was doing the blanket email thing and they called me and basically offered me the job. I haven’t seen many others get hired that way. People mostly just show up and if they need someone then they hire them.

My best experience at Buffalo was the first time I flew the DC-3. It was before I had my multi-IFR rating. Pretty cool to say the first multi-engine plane I flew was a DC-3. Not to mention it was IMC in icing. Another favourite for me was I got to go on a trip to Kugluktuk in Nunavut, the first time I saw the Arctic coast!
Worst experience? Everyone has a bad day at work sometimes. Mine was just a combination of cold temperatures, really long hours, things just not working properly. It’s safe to say that you were known at VFC for your unique sense of humour. What’s your funniest moment on the job at Buffalo? The funniest thing about Buffalo...The people here are awesome, really easy to have a laugh and joke around my co-workers. Makes a long day bearable. Do you have any advice for current VFC PPL/CPL students? How can other young pilots get started with a job like yours?
To get a job like this… I don’t really know. This job definitely isn’t for everyone. Takes a pretty “tough” person to work under these conditions and for certain bosses. Someone willing to invest a lot of time for an opportunity to fly. Some people just show up, others send emails. They get a lot though, so it’s easy to get over-looked. Perhaps the most important question we have for you: Will we see you in Season 2 of Ice Pilots? Yeah, I will be on the TV machine this coming season of Ice Pilots, only a little though I think because I was working down in Hay River while they were filming. They didn’t come down to Hay too much. They are currently filming the third season. I’m around a lot more for that. We never know how much of what they film they will actually use on the show though.
Thanks for your time Chris, and for chatting with us about life in the North, and your work at Buffalo Airways. We wish you all the best in the coming year, and we look forward to following your career on Ice Pilots!

Borego Springs California—Aerobatic Competition From: Sam Roland I was just down in Borrego Springs, California at an aerobatic competition, and my safety pilot took this video from the backseat. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=em3_73l-N28 The video is of the Sportsman 2010 sequence. I've created a poster that illustrates the maneuvers so that anyone can follow along! (on the following page) For me, personally, the part of the video I find most interesting are the sounds. I love the scream of the air as we rip through it at 5G and 200mph, but I also enjoy the balance created by the relative silence of the hammerhead and spin where only the engine can be heard. Even my voice can be heard in the spin (maneuver 2) as I say "one-half" (turn) and "here we go" as I initiate recovery. I've also attached a couple pictures of the aircraft I was flying ... a Giles-202. It's performs as well as an Extra 300.
If you are interested in learning some aerobatics, you’ll want to talk to Sam Roland. About once a month, he organizes a well qualified instructor from Canadian Flight Centre in Boundary Bay to come to VFC for the day to teach aerobatics to interested VFC members. If you’d like more information, you can contact Sam at: sam.roland@gmail.com
