Congratulations to VFC Student Pilot Kevin Skillings (above left). He is the proud winner of the mounted prop in a recent raffle held at the Victoria Flying Club in support of Red Cross relief efforts following the devestating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Thanks to all who contributed, we were able to send over $300 to the Red Cross. A special thanks to VFC AME Matt Carlow (above right) who contributed most of the work towards getting the prop polished and mounted.

June Mystery Aircraft May Mystery Identified This month’s mystery is the Bregeut DeuxPonts from France. Six were introduced in the 1950s as a 100+ seater double-decker (sort of proto-A380) with Air France. Later, in the jet age, they served as freighters and the type’s last revenue flight was from London to Paris in 1971.
Correctly Identified By: Daryl Williams Dirk Yzenbrandt Nice work! That one was not easy!

Photo of the Month This month’s winning photo was submitted by Matt Pope. Thanks Matt!
“Here’s a photo I took last summer after being dropped off on a mountainside in a Hughes 500D operated by Prism Helicopters. I’m a geologist, and I often work in places where even a helicopter can’t land, so we do “toeins” and hover exits/entries. It’s one of the best parts of the job!” Each month in The Patrician, you have the opportunity to win prizes from the pilot shop. Submit one aviation photo per month for your chance to win. Each photo submitted through the year is entered in a draw for a $100 Victoria Flying Club gift certificate at the end of the year. If you submit a photo each month, that gives you twelve chances to win! Submit your monthly photo to: thepatrician@shaw.ca

THEN & NOW On June 28, 2000 when Evan Sudul was a young lad of 14, he completed his first solo flight in a Victoria
Flying Club Cessna 152. (Top photo, with Instructor Graham Palmer and his uncle, Mike Sudul, long-time pilot and club member) We were fortunate enough to have Evan pay us a visit for our recent Open House on May 14th. He’s come a long way since his 152 days. Now a member of the Canadian Forces, Evan made the trip in an F-18, and took time out of visiting with many interested folks to re-create his first solo photo-op. Thanks for stopping by Evan, and we wish you all the best!

Down But Not Out An Introduction to Search and Rescue Saturday May 28th the Victoria Flying Club
once again hosted the popular “Down but Not Out” seminar where members and guests alike had a chance to learn the basics of how SAR works, steps to take in the event that you’re forced down in the wilderness and – new for this year – finer points of the pre-flight inspection process. Captain Greg Clarke, 2 i/c of the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre started the seminar with a presentation on how the SAR system works. He stressed the advantages of accurate, detailed flight planning and discussed the features, benefits and drawbacks of a number of the SAR related technologies currently on the market. Sergeant Conrad Cowan, a Search and Rescue Technician attached to JRCC, took up where Captain Clarke left off and talked about some steps to follow if you should ever find yourself in a situation where your plane goes down in the wilderness. Steps to follow in the event of a crash, items for survival kits and other crash-related considerations were presented.
Finally, on the theory that prevention is the best policy, VFC’s very own Assistant CFI Marcel Poland led the group through a very detailed discussion on pre-flight inspections. The seminar wasn’t all work – we had a fun pre-flight inspection challenge where participants could try to spot all the defects in a Cessna 152 especially “snagged” for the purpose by VFC’s maintenance dept. And who can forget the great barbecue put on by club member Kara Freeman, ably assisted by VFC President Lloyd Toope and Danny Poirier. I’m sure we all took home something a little different from this seminar. For me, it was Captain Clarke’s suggestions to a) keep your cell phone turned ON when flying (they can use the phone’s communications with cell towers to locate you) and b) consider including your SPOT user name / password on your flight plan as well as some of Sergeant Cowan’s survival kit suggestions. All in all, it was a great reminder of things to consider before taking off on a summer flight over the wilderness.
Thanks to Captain Greg Clarke and Sergeant Conrad Cowan from JRCC, VFC’s Marcel Poland and Gary VanDerLeer, and Kara, Lloyd and Danny for their assistance in putting on this seminar. Photo at Left: Seminar participants take in Marcel Poland’s pre-flight inspection tips.

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skilful individuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.”
“With a short dash down the runway, the machine lifted into the air and was flying. It was only a flight of twelve seconds, and it was uncertain, wavy, creeping sort of flight at best; but it was a real flight at last and not a glide.”
— Orville Wright, first flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft.
Congratulations from the Victoria Flying Club.
