They will also discuss how to be ATC as well as what failures the participants may wish to introduce. Each crew will have discretion as to whether failures will or will not occur, and this will be discussed in a crew briefing. VFC News June 14th - 19th for your opportunity to see and perhaps ride in this beauty. History of Aluminum Overcast The B-17s were commonly used during World War II on bombing missions, but this particular aircraft was delivered to the US Army Air Corps on May 18, 1945, too late to be used in the War. It was sold as military surplus in 1946 for only $750 and thereafter experienced a varied life as a cargo hauler, an aerial mapping platform, and a crop / forest duster. In 1983, it was donated to the EAA for restoration and preservation, which took place over 10 years and with thousands of hours of dedicated work by staff and volunteers in Oshkosh. It serves as a living reminder of World War II aviation and commemorates B-17G #42-102516, which was shot down on its 34th combat mission over Le Manior, France, on August 13, 1944. On Tour When Aluminum Overcast is on tour, aviation enthusiasts can actually walk through the airplane. If they wish, they can take a trip back in time and feel the might of this magnificent flying machine through the flight experience program. Half hour flights are available at all tour stops. Proceeds from the tour help keep Aluminum Overcast flying and will assist the continuing restoration, maintenance, and preservation efforts of the EAA. Even those too young to have lived through World War II can appreciate the history associated with this airplane. This Flying Fortress was one of the airplanes that helped the Allies achieve victory in World War II. The B-17 is an important part of aviation history. It can help us understand the technology of the times, the era in which the aircraft was developed and the human

allows members to purchase their own Aero-Lift (roughly $20,000 - see http://armaerospace.com, or talk with Marcel at the Club office) in order to store their airplane safely in the hangar. This opportunity could amount to huge savings for the aircraft owner, as purchasing or building a hangar can easily cost $100,000 or more.

The WMTC is an annual event committed to declaring the "Top Amateur Pilot in Canada." Sponsored by Air Canada - Flight Operations, this competition strives to encourage excellence in amateur piloting skills, provides contestants with a challenge, and gives finalists national exposure to senior officials and other dignitaries within the aviation industry. Contestants aspiring to a career in aviation can be proud to affirm that they have competed in one of Canada’s most prestigious aviation events. What activities can you expect as a WMTC contestant? Finalists are subjected to two rounds of air flight tests conducted by Transport Canada examiners, as well as a written examination judged by members of the Canadian Sport Aeroplane Association. Examiners look at the pilots' abilities to carry out preflight inspections, operate the aircraft systems, and maneuver the airplane skillfully in the upper airwork portion of the test. They also evaluate the pilots' competency. All of this is similar to Transport Canada's Private Pilot examination. VFC members have represented the Club at the WMTC many times over the years. Tracy (Biddle) Law was the first VFCer to win first place in 1993, competing in Halifax. In a recent conversation with her about her experience with the WMTC, Tracy said: "Whether you are looking to make flying a career or just for recreation, the Webster competition is an incredible opportunity to test your skills and meet people from across the country with a passion for aviation. I highly recommend the experience." Tracy has been flying for WestJet for over 6 years. She sends her regards to the Club and best wishes for any Webster contestants during the Club's 70th anniversary year.

VFC Celebrates 70 Years! Graduate Profile - Danielle Pomeroy, First Officer Landing that first job as a pilot is tough, especially in today's competitive market. For 70 years, VFC has been helping people reach their dreams of becoming a pilot. Learn about Danielle's experience in reaching her flying goals. If you are a VFC graduate, we would love to hear where your flight training has taken you. See page one for how to share! - Katy Earl, Editor ---------------

I completed the UVic Business Aviation Diploma Program, with the flight training part at VFC, between August 2008 - April 2009. It took me three years to get my commercial license with my Multi IFR. In order to pay for my training, I worked almost full time at Coast Capital Savings while I trained. VFC: When and how did you start your first commercial job? DP: After I finished all my ratings in August of 2011 at VFC I was lucky enough to find a ramp job at Sunwest Aviation in Calgary and started in October of 2011. I found the job while searching on AvCanada and had sent out resumes to what felt like a million places. I worked on the ramp at Sunwest for two years before moving on to the PA31 Navajo, doing cargo runs, in November of 2013. I flew the Navajo as a First Officer and at the same time worked part time on the ramp over the next year.

Feature Article VFC: What advice would you give students at VFC? DP: I would encourage flight students to find an aviation-related job while they are completing their flight training. This will help them with industry knowledge and increase their marketability. VFC: What do you like the most about your career? DP: I love my job! I can't imagine doing anything else. I often work very long days. And start very early in the morning! The pay is not great to start with. But the views are worth it. There is something incredible about flying through the air. I am lucky to work at a great company, and all my crew members are great teammates. I met my fiancĂŠ Kent Korol at Sunwest; he is an aircraft mechanic. We are getting married in June.

VFC was a fantastic place to complete my flight training. I still have so many fond memories. The instructors and staff were very friendly. Completing my flight training was so much fun, exploring and flying to new places. Now I am told where I have to fly to. And it's usually the same places over and over again! Still, I love it 100%. Sliding by Hope in 1965 Submitted by Eleanor Eastick, VFC Member

I was a flighty young thing back in 1965, but had never thought of flying then. I had other exciting things to do and one of them was to drive up to see the Hope Slide a month or so after it happened, in January 1965. It was the big news in the province and the talk of the town (Victoria) for days.

And I felt sorrow for the two young lovers, scarcely older than I was at the time, who were stopped on the shoulder waiting for a highway crew to arrive to clear a few rocks off the road when the Big Slide hit. Neither they nor their car were ever found under the forty-seven million cubic meters of mountain side that fell in an immense and powerful torrent that crossed the roadway and shot up the other side of the valley before cascading back to bury everything in its path under tons of rock.

I was particularly impressed hearing of the heroic Greyhound bus driver who backed his bus away from the slide along the dark and twisting road for miles. Where can you turn a bus around on the Hope-Princeton?

highway. I, however, was there in 1965, not long after the rubble was graded to make a temporary "shoo-fly road" over the debris, nearly 280 feet deep. That was done fairly quickly so drivers could avoid detouring through the US or going from Hope via Spence's Bridge and Merritt to get to Princeton. When the replacement stretch of highway was completed, it was located on the other side of the valley and is still more than 180 feet above the original roadway.

face of the slide and wondering how it happened... I had to see the biggest slide ever recorded in Canada and drove from Victoria in my 1958 Austin A55 with a friend and took a bunch of photos, black and white of course and printed on matte paper. The COPA Flight 6 Board consists of: Flight Captain (President): Rob Shemilt Co-Captain (Vice President): Allan Rempel Navigator (Treasurer): Art Reitsma April's meeting about our local harbour airspace drew in a full crowd; if you didn't attend, you missed out! Darlene George, Nav Canada Manager for both CYYJ and CYWH, and Randy MacKenzie, from Victoria Harbour FSS, answered many questions about the flow of traffic around our local waterways. CYWH Victoria Harbour Radio services float plane traffic in and out of the harbour along with advising boat traffic to avoid conflict separation. Prior authorization must be approved to land and or takeoff from CYWH. Other topics that came up included the status of our local radar mosaic (including weather stations on Mount Newton and Sea Island), Nav Canada's progress with providing satellite services and ADS-B coverage across Canada, preventing runway incursions, and much more.

Image: A full room for the April COPA meeting The May COPA Flight 6 meeting is on Tuesday May 3rd, 7:00 PM at the Victoria Flying Club. This month’s presentation will be by past COPA president Dr. Jonathan Wallace on flying into the United States. Jonathan will cover filing an eAPIS flight plan, contacting US Customs prior to arrival, requirements for navigating in US Airspace, return procedures for flying back into Canada, and more. This will be a good refresher for those who haven’t flown into the United States in some time or have never filed an eAPIS before. Also, COPA Flight 6 is planning a couple of fly-outs this year into Washington and Oregon, so come out and get prepared. You don't need to be a COPA National or member of the Victoria Flying Club to attend. Bring a friend if you wish! For more information, contact copaflight6@ gmail.com.
