What?! Half a 172 per year? Although VFC’s management team has negotiated our credit card fees down considerably over the last year, did you know that VFC pays the equivalent of a half of an airplane per year in credit card company fees? We’d ask you to consider using cash, interact or e-transfer in paying your account to reduce unnecessary fees, yours and ours, because we’d like to spend that money on adding another plane to the fleet. the decades, and we look forward to many more to come!
Our Club's roots go back to 1919 when the Victoria branch of the Aerial League of Canada was set up by returning WWI air veterans. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Victoria Aero Club became active, operating largely out of Lansdowne, Willows, and Gordon Head, private fields, as well as various water aerodromes. The Second World War largely brought Club activities to a close, however. Activities recommenced after WWII air veterans returned home to Victoria, and it was on November 16, 1946 that our Club received its charter. Membership quickly grew to 150 within two years. Men and women came from all over Victoria to earn their pilot licence at our Club, and in time from abroad. We are proud to have brought the joy of flying to thousands of people from all over the world over

Michael Cooper-Slipper Award
Claude Butler served as president of the Victoria Flying Club several times over the years. He was a successful businessman, inventor, and a man with many visions. His compassion and generosity knew no bounds. Claude always referred affectionately to his loving wife Jean, who was the Mayor of Central Saanich for several years, as “Her Warship.” He asked “Her Warship,” in his last moments, to do something memorable and worthwhile on his behalf for the Victoria Flying Club and this is how the Butler Flying Award was born.
Michael Cooper-Slipper was born in England January 11th 1921 and he joined the AF Squadron 605 equipped with Hurricanes, at the tender age of 17. At 19 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for valour during the Battle of Britain. After the war he joined AVRO Canada and test few the CF-100, CF-102, and Orenda powered F-86. He also flew a modified B-47 as a test bed for the AVRO Arrow Iroquois engine. After his career as a test pilot he embarked on a career in aviation sales, first with de Havilland and then with Field Aviation. Mike is survived by his wife Rita who resides in Victoria.
Betty Wadsworth Scholarship Betty Wadsworth joined the Victoria Flying Club in 1958 and was active in the support of general aviation all her life. As a director of COPA and a member of such organizations as BC Aviation Council and the Western Canada Aviation Museum of Flight and Transportation, her contributions have been recognized by numerous awards and citations. Betty Wadsworth maintained her connection with the Victoria Flying Club where she learned to fly, and when she died in April 1986 she left a portion of her estate to the Club. Since 1991, the interest from this grant has been awarded each year to further a member’s training, qualifications, or skills at the Victoria Flying Club. Aviation Excellence Since 1946
Brian Smedley Award Brian began his aviation career as an Aviation Mechanic for the Flying Fireman. This led him to become a pilot for the Flying Fireman followed by the BC Government Air Services. After 24 years with the BC Government, Brian flew for Ainsworth Lumber in 100 Mile House, BC. After retirement from flying, Brian was able to follow his lifelong dream to become a cowboy. He worked for many ranches in the Cariboo his last one being the 112 Mile Ranch.

REMEMBERING THE END OF THE GREAT WAR This year of 2018 is special, for it is the 100 year anniversary of the end of the First World War, a war where Canada truly came into its own, and the Canadian identity deepened. By the end of the war, one in every four RAF servicemen was Canadian. The following list (from Library Archives, GOC, but not fully verified) includes 197 servicemen who enlisted in
Victoria into varying capacities in the Great War and became airmen at some point in the war. This does not include the many Victorians who enlisted elsewhere, but we hope it serves as a poignant reminder of our past. Do you have a family member who served as an airman during the First World War? We would love to hear and share your story. Please send your stories to flyvfcmarketing@gmail.com.

Victoria's Contribution to the '20 Minute Club' 100 years after the end of the Great War, we take some time to remember some of the Victorian airmen who served. During the First World War over 22,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in varying capacities with the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service, and the Royal Air Force. Approximately 1,500 lost their lives.1 Over 400 airmen were from Vancouver Island,2 with many surviving to build their future back home.
Recruitment for the RFC and RNAS began in the first part of 1915. At that time, candidates were required to earn a pilot's certificate at their own time and on their own dime. Schools generally charged $1/minute of flying instruction, so aspiring airmen needed to have sufficient funds in order to support themselves in their training. Other Canadian servicemen were able to transfer to air service after enlisting and serving, and they received training through the military.
Over the course of the war, 11 general recruiting offices appeared around Victoria, and some post offices had recruiting services available.3

1919 The years after the war saw veterans such as P. Thompsett, G. A. Cameron, Harry Graves, Jack Clemence get the Victoria branch of the Aerial League of Canada up and running out of the Willow Aerodrome, with demonstrations throughout the city and an attempt towards starting commercial flying around the island. They purchased a Curtiss JN-4 biplane named Pathfinder largely out of their own pockets. Later on, they would have an office at 613 View, with W. H. Brown as secretary. Plane Maintenance How to choose a good detailer. Contributed by Leslie Hunter, Sea & Sky Eco Detailing.
Plane maintenance can be overwhelming and there may seem like there is not enough time. Detailing, waxing, and cleaning can be a big job that takes time, energy, flexibility and physical strength. This can be a large challenge, as most of our day may be consumed with work, business, clients, running a home, our kids, additional family responsibilities, the list goes on! We know that you own a plane to create down time from your busy life style, to spend time alone, or with friends and family, without interruption. If you are someone who does not have time, interest, or the physical ability to complete all the detailing your plane needs, then you may consider using a detailer. Taking care of your craft in a timely manner can prevent larger issues in the future. TIPS: SELECTING A DETAILER Choosing the right detailer can be a challenge. If you are on a budget you may want to prioritize what kind of services are most important. Whatever type of detailing you decide to farm out, a detailing business you can trust your aircraft with should have the following: 1. Insurance and business incorporation. 2. References you can check. 3. Products developed for aviation. November 2018
4. Training, certifications, and experience in aviation detailing.
ask the detailer how often they check on their crew during the cleaning process.
THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION The best scenario is to have excellent communication between you and your selected detailer. Establish what exactly will be done, the time frame, the products, the process, and the problem solving avenues the detailer will take if challenges arise. Open communication is key to gaining a better understanding of requirements and expectations. A good detailer can develop a maintenance plan for your plane that can support your budget, even if only part of your maintenance is completed.
Be realistic about what a detailer can and can't do for you. Heavily oxidized plane? Hire a detailer. Understand that oxidation does need more than just a wash and wax. However, a wash, wax or polymer can prevent further oxidation on your exterior. Repair of paint that is lifting and rust that is eating through paint? That will need more work than any detailer can provide.
Be sure to ask your potential detailer if they will provide a quote. Ask, will they charge by the team hour, person hour, or the job? Will they call you if the job might go beyond the estimated time? Do they have additional charges for products and materials? If you choose to do some of the work yourself, will they show you the process and perhaps sell you good quality products they use? There is much to consider so that the price of the completed job is not higher than anticipated. Ask the detailer if they work alone or have a crew. If they have a crew that does most of the work,
Ask if your detailer provides you with feedback on their job and your plane, with a report or status update.

If you are uncertain about the products a detailer is using, request they use specifc products or provide them with the products you want them to use.
BENEFITS Leaving the dirty work to an expert detailer, you can be free to just step into your clean, protected plane where all you need to think about is all the beautiful adventures you will have!
