News Around the Club What a busy month in Victoria September was! For just over a week, William and Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte toured the western reaches of Canada, joined in part by the Prime Minister Trudeau and his wife Sophie and other prominent politicians. The royal family got to fly with local airlines Pacific Coastal Airlines and Harbour Air Seaplanes in addition to being flown on the Canadian Air Force's CC-150 Polaris. VFC members enjoyed sharing the airspace with the royals, with many members going out to the ramp to greet them when they arrived on September 24th. For many members, it was the first time they
got to hear the CANFORCE 1 and ROYAL 3 callsigns on the radio. One member shared some of the fun he heard on the radio: CYYJ 119.70 MHz: “Tower, Royal 3 is ready for departure runway 27.” “Royal 3 hold short, traffic on short final.” “Tower, Royal 3 we’re on a tight schedule… Can you overshoot that Cessna?” “Negative, Royal 3 hold short runway 27” “Royal 3” “Royal 3, I need a read back on the hold short” “Royal 3, holding short runway 27” “WLY, you’re cleared for touch and go runway 27”

VFC News published 75 years ago, in October 1941, and gives an insight into what life was like here at the Pat Bay Airbase. The newsletter was originally published by pioneering R.A.F. airmen whose objective was "to present a monthly magazine representative of the station," and the list of editors and other helpers included Flt.-Lt. J.R. Pearson, A.C. C. Gosley, CPL. F. S. Kemp, L.A.C. Breckon, A.C. F. Reed, A.C. L. V. Roberts, and A.C. L. Sumner. The Commanding Officer of the R.A.F. at Pat Bay at the time was Group Captain P. D. Robertson, A.M.

When the first Patrician was published, the Pat Bay Airbase was only two years old and still had much development yet to be done. Contributors to The Patrician often wrote about the 'sea of mud' and the constant movement of buildings at the base. A lookback from that first edition is featured in this edition of the modern day Patrician! To check out the original 1940s Patricians online, they can be viewed here: https://archive.org/details/@bcam

Garibaldi Webcam Proposed Shutdown There has been news on the pilot networks that it is proposed to shut down the camera. Nav Canada is looking for your vote on this, which you can do here: https://www.bcaviation.ca/bcga-news/pilot-inputrequested-re-garibaldi-webcam-shutdown
An Interesting Place to Visit www.cadors.ca From Eleanor Eastick: Hi Pilot Pals! I just recently discovered an informative new website, run by a VFC private pilot for us general aviation pilots. It is a nice, comfortable, sitback-in-your-easy-chair discussion of Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reports from the past decade or two. The items are in the form of podcasts which makes for portable listening if you're on the move by road or by foot. Host Brad Crockett gets the ball rolling by reading a report and follows up by asking a "guest pilot" various questions related to the occurrence. The discussion is informal and is the opinion of the speaker, hence not to be taken as official in any way. What has happened around an aerodrome in the past can provide a heads-up for a pilot intending to fly into that particular airspace. The guest pilots speak from their own experience and observations. As for myself, I am always glad to get advice from someone who has been there and done that. It's called local knowledge and can be as important as anything in the CFS. This was told to me many years ago by an instructor, and it makes a lot of sense. Take a look at cadors.ca as new podcasts are added every month. Each episode packs a lot of interest. How can aviation stuff be anything but fascinating! Be a safer pilot and gain an edge from the cadors.ca podcasts. Blue Skies, Eleanor Eastick Aviation Excellence Since 1946

f o s r a e Y 75 trician a P e h T In collaboration with the BC Aviation Museum, and in celebration of VFC's 70th anniversary (November 1946) and The Patrician's 75th anniversary (October 1941), the first few editions of the Patrician have been made available online. The magazine provides a glimpse into the early years of the existence of CYYJ, shortly after it was built (1939). It also recounts the experience airmen of the R.A.F. and the R.C.A.F. had as they trained at Pat Bay to fight in the war. As we approach Remembrance Day, we sincerely hope that this 're-release' will provide an insightful and valuable lookback at our local and global history. https://archive.org/details/@ bcam

TOWER TALK October 2016
by by Simon Dennis, YYJ Tower ATC A young student has just landed and taxied onto the VFC apron, the end of her first solo flight. That fraction of air time now recorded in a new logbook column that, for those of us who have experienced it, is remembered both so well and, like many of those caught-up-in-the-moment moments, oddly not that well. A choreograph of individually rehearsed movements ultimately presented in one brief motion that afterwords leaves our ability to fully process it just beyond reach. In that precious and brief moment, with no one to obstruct our view of the right wingtip, riding a high of adrenaline and focus, we know something important and unique and once in a lifetime is occurring. Being able to appreciate it, however, this new definition of freedom and control, will have to wait. Beaming, our student exits her flying machine towards the waiting congratulations of her instructor, photographer (bearing a striking resemblance to VFC’s general manager) and more than one generation of an equally beaming family watching from the lounge patio. She is of such a young age, seemingly no more than 16. Perhaps she appreciates, in that surreal post-shutdown blur, what has just taken place. Perhaps focus in the presence of such youth and enthusiasm allows enough clarity. But, like most of us, it is most likely a realization that will unfold years into the future. For me, when I first soloed, taxiing the venerable club C152 GIMH back onto the sure footing of said apron under the watchful eye of a newly-minted class 3 instructor bearing a striking resemblance to VFC’s CFI, I certainly didn’t realize the significance of that moment. Writing this now, 17 years after I first soloed, the significance continues to unfold - that of a monumental step upwards into a career in aviation. Upwards - a word used in both a figurative and now literal sense, considering the location of my current office. A
trajectory that stems directly from my first solo flight and first realization that I, and only I, was in control. A first solo is ultimately a step of opportunity. A step towards a pilot licence yes, but a step towards so much more, only truly appreciated with time. A first solo is a step towards greater confidence, realization, infinite learning, an open door through which countless other doors may now in turn be opened. It is something extraordinary, should we define 'ordinary' as spending life bound to the earth doing something similar to numerous others. It is something to be fiercely proud of, to both share and sit back and reflect upon alone. It is something that could, has, or will make you a better person. Yes, being in sole command of an aircraft makes you a better person. As I watched this first solo scene unfold below me from the control tower earlier this summer, this awakening of opportunity, it gave me a much needed pause of reflection. At a busy time of year when we, as pilots and controllers alike, get swept up in the day to day operations required to make YYJ a safe experience for all, it reminded me simply of why we do this, and what surrounding ourselves in aviation does for us. I continue to shake my head that I now get to be the one saying ‘congratulations on your first solo’, a phrase given the chance I never pass up to say on air. It’s certainly not by or even in the book, but that is one exception I gladly make. To our inspirational first solo student this month, my thanks, and continued congratulations. Take your opportunity and fly with it, wherever in aviation or in life it may take you. Simon Dennis is a YYJ tower air traffic controller, ATPL holder, cocreator of PrepAIR Pilot Accredited Inter-user Refresher seminars, and former VFC instructor. He can be reached at simon.dennis@ navcanada.ca and will respond as soon as he takes off at least one of his two headsets.

Support for Flight Simulators Quick and simple this month: FleetCaptain handles our Redbird simulator now. What does handling a simulator mean? It means that you will Þnd Simulator in the list of Aircraft Types on the front counter iPads. Select it, Þll in your mission data and press the Submit Data button. When youÕre ready, the dispatcher will assign the Redbird to you then take your hobbs times when youÕre done.
This will help the club consolidate simulator and aircraft dispatches making administration, logbook management and reporting easier, and will provide us with a single place to keep track of defects and maintenance activity. Give it a try next time you take a ßight in the Redbird.

The next COPA Flight 6 meeting is on Tuesday, October 4th. This month's meeting will be a tour of Harwood Custom Composites. HCC is a privately owned Canadian company located at the Victoria International Airport and was founded in 1999 by Jon Harwood to meet the need for high quality aerospace composite fabrication and repair services. HCC does composite manufacturing, wet layup, resin infusion, pre-peg and high temperature composite repair along with thermoforming for windows both contoured and bubble. Thanks to Les Lowe for arranging what will be an informative tour.
The COPA Flight 6 Board consists of: Flight Captain (President): Rob Shemilt Co-Captain (Vice President): Allan Rempel Navigator (Treasurer): Art Reitsma
The September COPA Flight 6 meeting was a photo and narrative presentation by our own COPA Flight 6 treasurer Art Reitsma. Art traveled on his motor bike this past summer from Victoria BC to EAA Air Venture at Oshkosh Wisconsin. Logging close to 7000KM, Art, amazingly only sustained one flat tire in his travels and even detoured south to McMinnville Oregon to see the Spruce Goose before turning east to Oshkosh. Thanks Art for sharing your stories and photo.
The November COPA Flight 6 meeting will be on Tuesday, November 1st, featuring a presentation from Victoria Airport Authority Vice-President Operations and Development, James Bogusz. James will update us on the latest proposed changes at YYJ and address any questions or concerns you might have.
