TOWER TALK

August 2017

by Simon Dennis, YYJ Tower ATC, ATPL

Happy mid-summer everyone. It certainly has been a busy one full of endless VFR weather. As I type this, it looks like this coming first week of August will be close to record setting temperatures for many areas of BC, with not even a hint of cloud cover in site. Hopefully you are making the most of it, whether in the air or on the ground. If you have been flying out of YYJ, we appreciate your continued assistance as we all try to negotiate these busiest times of the year and the challenge it presents, especially with our reduced tower staffing levels. Your patience and understanding is very much appreciated, and thus far I can confidently say everyone is managing well on both sides of the microphone.

cards are divided into direction-specific (north and south) procedures, with more indepth point-by-point explanations. We have presented these cards at our PrepAIR refresher seminars for the past two years to a strong reception, and I figured this would be a good time to expose them to this audience as well. Again, they are our one set of procedures that generates the most pilot mistakes, and consequently an increased controller workload, so the more pilots that follow them the better off we all will be. If you are a local pilot you are most likely well versed in these procedures, and if so then I ask that you pass this diagrams along to any pilots, groups, flight schools etc you may know that use YYJ but are not as well versed - the more that know the better! If you are reading this as an itinerant pilot that is not as familiar, then hopefully you can learn something from the two pages that follow, or at least have the existing procedures better clarified.

One of the principal ways that pilots can help controllers provide their safe, orderly and expeditious service is to of course be well versed in local procedures. YYJ’s VFR arrival and departure procedures are some of the most frequently used of these, and are also some of the most mis-interpreted. With that in mind, here at YYJ tower we have created arrival and departure “cheat sheets, to be used in conjunction with the published VFR arrival and departure procedures in the CFS, and on the reverse side of the Vancouver VTA chart.

Continue to enjoy your summer, and remember I can always be reached at simon.dennis@navcanada.ca for any questions regarding procedures or anything else ATC related here at YYJ. Regards, Simon

As you can see, instead of the currently published diagrams that depict all of the arrivals and all of the departures, these

VFC News

The Social Side of Aviation The Victoria Flying Club began operations in 1946. Through the years a lot of things have changed: the aircraft we fly, the airspace we fly in, the regulations within which we operate, etc. The one thing that hasn’t changed is that we are a social club. In all our years of keeping up with changes in the aviation industry, and in flight training best practices, we have worked hard not to lose sight of that. As the other legacy flying clubs across Canada either close their doors, or become privatized, we continue to operate as a not-for-profit organization, governed by a volunteer board of club members. We exist only because of members – like each of you! This sets us apart from other flight training schools, and it’s a big part of what makes VFC such a special place. With that said, we are living in a time where people are busier than ever, and more disconnected from the people around them. We connect digitally, and forget to connect live and in person. That has extended to our club as well in some ways. One of our members, Don Devenney, is looking to change that, and we would like to encourage more of you to do the same. Flying with other pilots is a great way to learn, to share what you’ve learned, and to make new friends who share your passion (obsession?) with aviation and airplanes. VFC is home to literally hundreds of these types of people. Make it your mission to meet some of them! August 2017

LET’S GO FLYING! • Looking for a pilot to share the cost on your next flight? • Want to try an airport a bit further afield but you’re a bit unsure about procedures, etc.? • Got a new Instrument rating but you’re a bit nervous about doing IFR “for real” and you’d like someone with experience to help out? • Or…? Then give me a call…. Flying is a social experience and I’m always looking for people to fly with. I also like helping new pilots get comfortable in the aviation world. A bit about me: PPL with about 675hrs TT and 500 PIC Instrument / night rated Former VFC President & Director Author of most of the “Getting’ There” series of articles about local airports. • Completed VFC aerobatics course (ah….those were the days!)

• • • •

I’m in the Dakota most Saturdays for brunch – c’mon over, join our group and let’s talk aviation. Or you can email me at: flightplanning@devenney.ca . Don Devenney
