The story of
Lieutenant Robert Hampton Gray is well known amongst Canadian military aviators. In the waning days of the War in the Pacific, “Hammie” Gray, a much respected and loved Canadian naval officer flying Corsairs from the Royal Navy carrier HMS Formidable, gave his life during an attack on a Japanese destroyer in Japan’s home waters. The Vintage Wings of Canada FG-1D Corsair, in the markings of Robert Hampton Gray, will be making special appearances at Naval festivities across Canada in 2010 in support of the Centennial of the Canadian Navy. Where possible, she will fly in the company of our other Naval aviation classic—the Fairey Swordfish. The Corsair will have the honour of bringing Hampton Gray’s Victoria Cross (VC), which is the last VC awarded to a Canadian aviator, to tour stops and airshows across the country. www.vintagewings.ca
The
Victoria Flying Club was honoured to host The Vintage Wings of Canada FG-1D Corsair on August 10th and 11th as part of its crosscountry journey in honour of the Canadian Naval Centennial celebrations. We had the opportunity to host a reception for veterans and former Corsair pilots and it was an absolute honour to witness the reunions and the shared history in the pilot’s lounge that evening. Thank-you to all who attended! On August 11th, hundreds of interested and curious folks wandered the VFC ramp enjoying an up-close look at not only the Corsair, but also the return of Hawk One, the restored F-86 Sabre, as well as a number of other vintage aircraft. The hi-light of the day included a formation fly-past by the Corsair and Hawk One as they left on their way to the Abbotsford Airshow. Thank-you to all involved for sharing with us this incredible piece of our military and naval history.

2010 Air Cadet Power Scholarship Program at Victoria Flying Club
Photo Credit: Jen Knapp ~ visionphotographyvictoria@gmail.com Every year, 34 Air Cadets are selected from across the province to participate in the Air Cadet Private Pilot Scholarship program. The selection process for these scholarships is rigorous, and it takes into account each cadet’s high school academics, community involvement, personal narrative and performance on a written entrance exam. This process then culminates in a three-person selection panel that asks each cadet substantive questions about current affairs, citizenship and aviation. Having been selected for this scholarship, each cadet is then sent to a contracted flying school where they attempt to complete their Private Pilot’s License in just seven weeks. This summer, 10 cadets had the pleasure of completing their PPL’s at the Victoria Flying Club. Through the hard work and dedication of VFC’s staff and instructors, the flight training for these cadets went extremely well. Of the ten, most were able to solo in approximately ten hours with one soloing just three and a half days into the summer. What’s more, all of the cadets were finished of all components of their PPL, including their TC Written Exams and Flight Tests, in just five and a half
weeks. This remarkable feat was also accomplished with a high regard for safety and, as a school, VFC’s Flight Safety record for the Air Cadets in 2010 was second to none. For their part, the cadets thoroughly enjoyed their experience at VFC. By having a low instructor to student ratio, the cadets were able to receive the individualized attention to excel in their flight training. The cadets were also able to take advantage of VFC’s excellent training facilities, lounge and the fantastic meals provided by the Dakota CafÈ. The chance to see an F-86 Sabre and an F-4U Corsair up close were also welcome diversions and significantly added to the cadets’ experience. For many years, graduates of the Air Cadet flying program have gone on to make an significant contribution to the Canadian aviation industry. In fact, several of VFC’s own instructors obtained their first licenses through the Air Cadet Program. From the experience of the Air Cadets at VFC this summer, I am almost certain that this is a tradition that will continue with Canada’s latest Air Cadet Private Pilots. Captain M. MacPherson PPS (Victoria) Supervisor 2010

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skilful individuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.
