Victoria Flying Club News VFC End of Summer Hangar BBQ and Dance

August 27th brought with it a beautiful summer evening, and the VFC hangar was the place to be. Well over a hundred VFC members, staff, family, and friends gathered together to enjoy a delicious barbeque, and entertainment provided by The Archers, a group of very talented local musicians. Many thanks to the group of VFC staff members who organized the event, all of those who helped throughout the evening, and The Archers for giving folks a chance to kick back and enjoy the music, or kick up their heels on the dance floor.

Introduction to Twin Engine Flight For the second year in a row, I managed to attend the annual fly in breakfast in June at Lacombe, Alberta. We set off late in a Cardinal from Springbank under low ceilings and mist, arriving in sunny Lacombe in time to grab the last of the pancakes. Long time friend Mark Eberl of Sunwest Aviation was there with his magnificently restored Beech 18, C-GSWS, its polished aluminum shining in the sun. This plane is fully restored to the original RCAF navigational trainer it was in the early 50’s. I was privileged to ride the right seat with Mark on a short hop over to Ponoka, where he keeps the plane. After the exhilaration of two thundering 450 hp radial engines on take off, Mark let me fly the big twin and join the circuit at Ponoka. So much fun, not long enough! A lot more to handle than a 172, so hopefully another opportunity will arise to take the stick of this vintage machine.

The Victoria Flying Club was pleased, once again, to participate in the British Columbia Aviation Museum’s annual Open House. It was a great day filled with interesting exhibits and restoration projects, as well as many static and air-born displays. VFC was on site to provide sightseeing flights for those who wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather from a slightly higher altitude. Several aircraft were kept busy throughout the day giving folks an introduction to aviation. Below, a future pilot awaits his departure with VFC Instructor Dave Kupchenko, Manager Gerry Mants, and BCAM Member Larry Dibnah.

“Without disruption of air traffic, these fearless, forthright, indomitable and courageous individuals did venture into the wild blue yonder in flying machines. Furthermore, these skilful individuals did safely land said flying machines at Victoria International Airport, incurring no significant damage to self or machine, thus completing first solo flights.
