SO LONG
Renaissance Man Jim Pile, Photographer And So Much More
I
t was the February of 1985. I was in the process of selling and compiling my first edition of “TravelHost of Hampton Roads,” a weekly in-room guide for the region’s hotel guests. I was making sales calls one day, which led me to a small ad agency, Fischer-Pile Advertising, in the Hilton Village section of Newport News. That’s when I met Jim Pile. Jim bought in to this new TravelHost concept and signed The Inn Place on as an advertiser for the inaugural issue. As a partner in the agency, Jim was quick to inform me that he was also a professional photographer. I soon signed him to photograph images for clients’ ads. Now, 32 years, hundreds of thousands of miles and millions of photographs later, Jim is retiring. You learn a lot about a man over 32 years. Many of our long-time customers know Jim very well, as he has been taking their photos year-in and year-out. But, Jim continuously surprised me with something new that I was learning about him for the first time. Here are a few things you may or may not know: Jim has a master’s degree in Film from Syracuse University. He loves his Orangeman basketball, even when they are losing. His undergraduate degree in Philosophy is from Gettysburg College in 1967. Jim is an ordained Methodist minister with a Master of Divinity from Drew Seminary in New Jersey. He occasionally fills the pulpit when needed, teaches Sunday School, sings bass in the choir, helps with Vacation Bible School and acts in numerous dinner theaters raising money for missions. Out of college, Jim was a Peace Corp Volunteer. Since 2000, Jim has been volunteering at KIDZ’NGRIEF, an organization dedicated to helping kids deal with grief and the loss of loved ones. He facilitates the middle school group at Mikey’s Camp. Jim is an accomplished magician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Order of Merlin. Part of his job description at VistaGraphics has required that a new trick be performed at our annual Christmas party and often a bonus trick at our summer sales meeting. He is an accomplished musician on the guitar, drum, saxophone and most any wind instrument you can imagine. He plays piano and violin. He has written close to 100 songs and has his own songbook. Our Christmas parties sometimes take advantage of his musical abilities as well. Jim once confided in me that he had just taken up photography shortly before we met, learning on VistaGraphics’ dime as we depended on him more and more. Looking back, I believe he must have been a fast learner because he delievered beautiful work from the very beginning. On top of everything else, Jim is an accomplished family man with three daughters, two stepdaughters, one stepson, three “in-law” children and 10 grandchildren. They all refer to him as a “Renaissance Man.” I couldn’t agree more. Jim, we’re all going to miss you, and we wish you a happy, healthy and well-deserved retirement.

SHELLING
Beachcombers Paradise
Jackknife Elongated and narrow, the jackknife are of a yellowish-olive color with a white interior. You guessed it—they are similarly shaped to a jackknife blade, and you’ll discover that its edges are even sharp like a razor.
Lettered Olive Highly sought after along our beaches, lettered olive shells are smooth, shiny and cream-colored with brownish marks scattered around its conical shell.
Rosy Wolfsnail Known as the “cannibal snail” for its speed, ravenous appetite—often, they consume smaller snails in one bite—and predatory behavior, rosy wolfsnails are a land snail. As the name suggests, the color of this shell is a rosy-brown hue.
Sand Dollar As some of the most favorite seashore souvenirs, sand dollars are not actually shells. When you discover these beige, disk-like treasures, what you are really picking up are the skeletons of burrowing sea urchins. When exposed to the sun, their colorful surfaces whiten to become the sand dollars you know and love.
Scotch Bonnet The rare scotch bonnet is the official state shell of North Carolina since 1965. Mostly a creamy, white color with reddish-brown streaks or spots covering its surface, it can also have fine grooves in its cone shaped shell.
Spiny Jewel Boxes
Brunswick Island’s Shores Are Home To An Abundance Of Unique Shells by ROBERT ENRIQUEZ
A
dorned with shells of all shapes and sizes, hundreds of rare treasures can be found freckling the beaches of the Brunswick Islands. But where do they all come from? Shells are left behind by soft-bodied animals called mollusks. From shiny and small to the oddly-shaped and cone-shaped, you’ll soon discover that shelling along the beaches of the Brunswick Islands is unlike any other. Even if you’re a veteran shell collector, visitors will be surprised at the extensive variety of shells that can be found here. If you’re newer to the shelling world, you never know … maybe you’ll soon become a shell seeker yourself. Here is just a snippet of the extraordinary shells that you may find while grazing the beaches of Brunswick Islands:
Cockle
Coquina
A commonly found shell you’ll spot while shelling along the coast, cockles are formerly edible clams. Often, cockles can still be found hinged, appearing like folded wings.
While the name sounds unfamiliar, you’ve probably encountered these shells more often than you think; Coquina Beach was even named after the abundance of the coquina clams. Coquinas are shaped almost like long fingernails, and their hues can be anywhere from a light purple to a brilliant orange.

These shells are frequently found along the Carolina coast. The spiny jewel box’s surface resembles tiny broken icicles, which act as a natural defense against other shell-dwelling mollusks from trying to drill into their shell.
Whelk Much larger in size, the whelk belongs to the same marine family as the conch because of its conical shape, large spiral and wide opening. If you happen to find a whelk dwelling in its shell, don’t throw it back into the ocean because it will most likely not survive; it may become food to other animals, such as sea birds. It’s no secret that there is a great culture of shelling in the Brunswick Islands. Beginners at shelling may want to keep every shell they find, but choose sparingly. While animals no longer live inside these shells, the calcium in the shells is eventually broken down to become new shells. The best time to go shelling is during low tide after a storm. As the cooler months roll around, the abundance of shells is far greater. During the off-season, there are fewer visitors frequenting the beach, allowing for more opportunities to discover a new treasure or bring home a souvenir. Whether you’re an avid sheller or just embarking on this new hobby, the Brunswick Islands are the perfect place to start.

Throughout Wilmington’s historic district, you’ll find a wide range of stores, most of them locally owned with a unique selection of merchandise from candles and jewelry to locally crafted wares. The Cotton Exchange at the north end of the riverfront features a variety of shops in a historic cotton building, which was once the site of the largest cottonexport company in the world. Learn about the history of the cotton industry, and then stroll around the multi-level shopping center and its many diverse stores. They sell everything from Christmas decorations and books to jewelry and homemade fudge. On the other end of the riverfront is Chandler’s Wharf, a retail and dining complex with cobblestone streets, plank walkways and a maritime atmosphere. There you will find a mix of dockside restaurants and quaint stores. Another unique shopping destination offering a broad variety of goods is the Old Wilmington City Market, a historic building on
the waterfront between Front and Water streets. Art galleries, jewelers, clothing boutiques and craft shops occupy the arcade-style building, which once served as a vegetable market. Be sure to visit the Southeast’s largest upscale home furnishing consignment store conveniently located right off of Market Street. One particularly delightful place to shop is Lumina Station, a shopping area inspired by the Lumina pavilion, once a Wrightsville Beach hotspot. Lumina Station features a dozen unique shops, restaurants and cafes and a delightfully upscale, yet relaxed environment. Take a rest on one of the many rocking chairs, which sit among the beautiful flowers and trees surrounding the center. Here you’ll find stores offering one-of-a-kind delights such as artisan jewelry and handbags, splendid gifts for the home, fine art pieces and so much more. The quiet, oak-lined streets of Southport provide a totally unique shopping experience. As you traverse the old-fashioned shops in historic buildings and houses, you’re sure to find gifts, jewelry, art and clothing—not to mention charming storeowners with many stories to tell.
Specialty Stores Visit Hanover Center, a 320,000-square-foot community shopping center, to find specialty food items, home furnishings and gifts. On Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach, shoppers will find stores geared to beach lovers and art lovers along with other specialty stores, such as swimsuit boutiques, nautical gift stores and bookstores. Most of the stores on Pleasure Island have a central theme—having fun at the beach. You’ll come across plenty of beach stores with everything you need for a day of fun in the sun, as well as countless souvenirs and gift items. Carolina Beach has the largest selection of such stores, as well as a few other interesting shops, including bookstores and clothing boutiques.
Antiques Antique stores abound here, making this area quite a popular place for finding vintage treasures and retro souvenirs. Antique enthusiasts will find much to smile about across Southport, as there are plenty of quaint antique stores, as well as an antique mall with more than 30 dealers. Parking is free on all city streets, but the town is so pleasant and small, you’ll definitely want to walk from shop to shop. Pleasure Island also has a tremendous antiques scene. Shopkeepers often make the experience of browsing just as fun as the thrill of a good find with their friendly attitudes and pleasant demeanor. However, when you do find that item you’ve been looking for or perhaps didn’t realize you needed, you’ll be able to treasure it forever and keep it as a reminder of your time on North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands.

GOLF
Welcome to
The Golf Coast
Lush Fairways, Warm Climate And Carolina Charm Make This Region Top-Notch For Golfers
W
ith almost 500 golf courses across the state, North Carolina is one of the most popular destinations for golfers on the East Coast. This coastal region is one of the state’s most dense areas, with nearly 40 courses in the Cape Fear Coast and Brunswick Islands alone and dozens more within a short drive.
In fact, the amount of our top-quality courses has earned Brunswick Islands the moniker “Golf Coast.” World-class golfers, like Arnold Palmer, Fred Couples and Jon Daly, have taken advantage of the diverse topography, sandy soil and seaside terrain to mold stunning, expansive fairways into the already beautiful landscape.

Courses here on Golf Coast blend seamlessly with nature; many boast water views of the ocean, inlets or sounds and some peer right over the Atlantic Ocean or Intracoastal Waterway. Inland courses are set amid towering pines, pristine forests and the occasional heron or deer. Boasting Carolina Pine hardwoods and glossy greens, Wilmington’s Beau Rivage Golf & Resort offers a rare course layout featuring 40 to 75 feet changes in elevation. This coastal region surely has a course to suit you, from seasoned pros to first-timers! While the landscape of the courses is relaxing, there are definitely some challenging holes throughout the Brunswick Islands—challenging enough that golfers keep returning again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at nearly all of the nearby courses. Green fees are in line with what you’d expect to pay, and you might be pleasantly surprised at rates offered by most courses. Before you head out to the links, contact the course to arrange
a tee time. Some local courses also have online booking options. Either way, keep in mind that it’s best to book ahead. Most golf courses offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to this game of precision, on-site pros are there to help. Learn the basics from one of the expert instructors, or work on advanced techniques with a pro. Some golf courses have the additional benefit of on-site driving ranges and practice greens, as well as all the necessary amenities, such as a pro shop, rentals, beverage and snack carts and a clubhouse bar and restaurant. Some of the best courses are also resorts, with full accommodations for the ultimate golfing getaway. With sub-tropical weather, golfers are lured here year-round. But perhaps the best time to hit the links is the spring and fall, when the temperatures cool and the beach crowds return home. No matter what time of year, you’re bound to experience some of the best golf of your life in the friendly atmosphere that defines the North Carolina coast.

Wrightsville Beach is one of the extraordinary beaches on the Cape Fear Coast. Retaining its quaint feel from years of isolation from the main land (it could only be accessed via boat), Wrightsville offers something for everyone. Whether you’re sunbathing, boating, hiking or brushing up on history in the local museum, the fun never stops, with every season offering unique pursuits. University of North Carolina at Wilmington, not far from Wrightsville Beach, is a picturesque college town with a flurry of activity no matter what time of year. The fun doesn’t stop once you step off the beach. The Cape Fear Coast offers tons of activities that are sure to keep the whole family entertained. With more than 30 championship golf courses in the Cape Fear Coast and nearby Brunswick Islands, golfers are simply spoiled. Perfect greens and stunningly scenic courses are open year-round. Be adventurous and try parasailing or scuba diving, or hit the waves surfing or jet skiing. If you’re new to these sports, stop by one of the local businesses to rent equipment and take lessons. For a more relaxing day, rent canoes or kayaks and venture around the coast. The local wildlife lends itself to plenty of bird watching, and the terrain offers a plethora of hiking and biking opportunities. Being surrounded by water certainly has its perks, especially when it comes to fishing. Fishing enthusiasts will drool over the diversity of species in the surrounding waters and the variety of ways to toss out a line. Fish in the surf, explore the fertile waters of the Intracoastal Waterway or take a charter out into the Gulf Stream. If you’d rather fish from the coast, grab some bait and head over to the pier. As you might expect, seafood is a specialty along the coast, and the choices are anything but limited. But if seafood is not your thing, don’t forget about the other varieties of cuisine, especially our worldfamous North Carolina barbecue. If rain threatens your day or if you’re looking for a leisurely indoor, peruse the eclectic shops, art galleries and antique stores for local treasures. The Cape Fear Coast is also home to a vast amount of history and unique waterfront culture, which can be readily experienced by a simple stroll through the quaint tree-lined streets of Wilmington, just northwest of the Cape Fear Coast. The thriving port and docks have become a vibrant waterfront village, and old homes and buildings tell the stories of this historic seaport. From nearby Civil War battlefields to a restored WWII Battleship, there is plenty to see and do for any age.
Wrightsville Beach Charming and chic, this surf town is the ultimate island getaway. Bikini-clad girls and boys in board shorts mingle casually outside a popular surf shop on Wrightsville Beach’s busiest block. Some carry surfboards, still dripping wet from their last ride, while others sit on a ledge, sharing a cold drink

with friends. With killer tans, colorful bathing suits, designer sunglasses and broad smiles, these young adults exemplify all that is Wrightsville Beach—hip, colorful, chic, cheerful and fashionably laid-back. It’s where surf culture meets the yachting world—classy, casual and just plain cool. Named one of the top 10 surf towns in the U.S. by Surfer Magazine, Wrightsville is a surfer’s mecca. There are dozens of surf shops throughout the island, including one owned by the parents of the famous surfer Ben Bourgeois. But Wrightsville is also more than just a surf town—it is the ultimate shore destination. With a 5-mile stretch of sandy beaches, picture-perfect ocean views, trendy stores, gourmet restaurants and a slew of recreational opportunities, Wrightsville provides all the ingredients for a great beach getaway any time of year. Because of the scenic stretch of beautiful beaches, people have been flocking to this thin stretch of Carolina coastline for more than a hundred years. At the turn of the century, a trolley system was built to connect the mainland to the island, which in turn brought vacationers from nearby Wilmington and beyond to sunbathe, swim and enjoy some leisure time. The Wrightsville Beach Museum of History has a whole exhibit on the Lumina Pavilion. Built in 1905, the Lumina was a famous gathering place for dancing, playing and mingling, and a major highlight of Wrightsville Beach. Unfortunately, the historic landmark was demolished in 1975. At the museum, you will also see many other fascinating artifacts, photographs and stories from the island’s past. Housed in a turnof-the-century beach cottage, the museum is a great way to bring those early days of Wrightsville Beach back to life. The museum is located at 303 W. Salisbury Street. Call 910-256-2569 or visit WBMuseum.com for more information. Of course, one of the reasons Wrightsville is so loved by families, retirees and college students alike is the wide variety of things to do right on the island. The beach is a natural attraction, with opportunities to surf, hunt for shells, fish, play games or just catch some rays. On the harbor side of the island, there are several marinas full of spotless yachts, classic runabouts, sailboats, jet skis and fishing boats, many of which are available for rent or charter. If you are more into pier fishing, head over to Johnnie Mercer’s Pier for an extraordinary view of the ocean and a great place to cast a line or merely watch to see what the locals are catching. Locals enjoy a popular walking/running path called The Loop, a 2.45mile path around the inner island. The Loop passes through several parks, scenic marshes and right through town. In fact, actress Katie Holmes was spotted many times running The Loop when she lived here to film Dawson’s Creek. The Loop is a great place to catch some fresh air and get some exercise in while walking, biking, jogging or skating.
Other public parks on the beach offer plenty of outdoor fun. Find tennis courts, playgrounds, barbecue pits, soccer and softball fields, basketball courts and trails through marshland and coastal forests. Venture down a 5-mile kayak trail and explore the coastal marshes that are inaccessible by foot. Down Airlie Road you will find a glorious garden celebrating plants for all four seasons. Stroll down the curving paths and witness a wide variety of unique plants, gaze upon a 500-year-old Airlie Oak tree and have lunch on the picnic grounds. When you’ve gotten enough sun, take the fun inside for a rewarding adventure. Wrightsville Beach is known for its amazing shopping. People come from around the region just to browse through the many distinct stores, hip boutiques and charming surf shops. From home furnishings to designer clothes, beach necessities to quality gifts, Wrightsville Beach shops have much more selection than your average beach town. Whether you spend your day surfing or shopping, nothing completes a day in Wrightsville Beach like happy hour, a delicious meal and a view of the water. Watch the sunset draw another day in paradise to a close as you enjoy fresh seafood, family-style Carolina barbecue or our gourmet island-inspired cuisine. There are dozens of beach eateries serving up a wide array of cuisine, from sushi to steak and pizza to crab legs. After dinner, many area restaurants become popular spots to mingle, sip on cocktails and dance to beach music well into the night. Wrightsville draws a wide variety of people from all walks of life. Surfers, shoppers, sun-seekers and sailors all come to Wrightsville Beach to enjoy a little paradise. Though small in size, it is large in culture and character. Want a piece of the action? Spend a day, weekend, week or lifetime in this charming and chic beach town, and you’ll soon be hooked.

In fact, last year, SUP had more first-time participants than any other outdoor activity in the United States. Even celebrities like Robert Downey, Jr., Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey and Rihanna have taken to the water in search of fun and fitness. The popularity of SUP is likely due to how easy it is. Kids, parents and grandparents can all hop on a stable rental board and enjoy paddling. It’s quick to learn, and after standing up the first time, your body balances within a few minutes. After that, you’re free to cruise around and explore the waterways. Couples can paddle out and find a quiet spot to see a sunset from the water. Individuals can test their balance in SUP yoga. Daredevils can take to the waves or enter a race. There is truly something for everyone with SUP. It can be as easy or as hard as you’d like it to be; this helps with family outings where each person is looking for their own unique experience. Quality rental outfitters, with certified instructors (from a reputable organization), are your best bet to have a great time. It’s important to get a few pointers before you head out. Simple things such as direction to hold the paddle, how to paddle straight and where to stand on the board can make your time on the water much more enjoyable. SUP is easy enough to just rent and ride, but if you’d like to learn more about technique for fitness, racing or surf then a lesson is the way to go. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have such a great time, you will barely notice the full body workout that SUP provides. This year on your vacation, head out on the water, standing, not confined and free to roam. Enjoy clear, quiet water with miles of tranquil marsh to explore. Take a break from the heat and sun as you hop off the board into refreshing waters for a quick swim before you paddle along. This year, try something new. Try SUP! —April Zilg, Carolina Paddleboard Co.

A Way of Life
urfing is a way of life on the beautiful beaches of southeastern North Carolina. So many locals cherish and respect the rich history of the sport and lifestyle. It makes us who we are. Watching someone glide on a surfboard while perched on the crest of a wave incites awe! It also poses questions like, “How does one learn?” and “Who came up with this exhilarating sport?” Today surfing is a way of life for millions of people, but it is wedged in history—born under the feet of indigenous islanders thousands of years ago. Surfing’s legacy began with the first Polynesians who experienced wave riding in route between the tropical islands spotting the Pacific. Fast forward to the present and learning to surf it is at the top of everyone’s bucket list! There is no better place to cross that off your list than the consistent beginner breaks of the Cape Fear Coast and Brunswick Islands. In the summer, the clear and warm water temperature averages in the low 80s, making it an ideal location to learn to surf. Both our spring and fall shoulder seasons are also fabulous as crowds are light and the waves still perfect for learning. Surfing is about getting back to the basics, and learning is popular for both vacationers and locals alike. The best part is that anyone can learn! Surfing provides a platform, which builds confidence for beginners, yet it can also humble even the most gifted natural athletes. You can start when you’re 5 or 75, and the key factor is professional instruction. Learning to surf the right way is essential to gaining the fundamental building blocks necessary to achieve your goals. The best introduction into the world of surfing is through a professional surfing lesson or weeklong surf camp. Proper instruction will accelerate your learning curve and take away many of the frustrations beginners face—all while providing a fun atmosphere. When you are ready to catch your first wave make sure you choose a company which can provide you the best wave riding instructions possible. Keep in mind several important factors when selecting a program. First, ask how long the company has been in business. You will tend to find that the longer a company has been around, the better their instructional methodologies. Second, all instructors at a minimum should be certified in CPR/First Aid and teach at a student to instructor ratio of 3:1. Make sure safe, soft-topped boards equipped with safety fins are used. Taking lessons will teach you skills which could otherwise take months and years to learn on your own, while giving you knowledge and resources to continue at your own pace. Picture this: focused eyes, ear-to-ear smile, your instructor cheering you on as you ride your first wave ever. My favorite summer moments are seeing the faces of beginner surfers light up as they ride their first wave! Always remember that the best surfer out there is the one having the most fun. Pura Vida! hen you first step onto the streets of Wilmington, you’ll quickly learn you’ve come to a place with winning combinations. The area boasts historic homes, chic restaurants and bars, a pristine coastal environment and a profitable industry that all gracefully combine to create one of the finest seaports on the East Coast. The University of North Carolina Wilmington brings a youthful energy to the city blocks, while the burgeoning film industry, tourism and other businesses keep the town thriving all year-round. From the shady lawns of historic homes to the bustling counters of downtown cafes, Downtown Wilmington is well worth some exploration for a day, a weekend or a lifetime. Founded in 1739, Wilmington has a long history of shipbuilding and trade. At one point, it was actually the site of the largest cotton exchange in the world. Steamships were commonly seen along the downtown docks as cargo was unloaded and timber was traded. Fine homes and plantations filled up the downtown and surrounding areas, and in 1840, Wilmington became the largest city in the state of North Carolina. While Wilmington no longer holds that title, remnants of Wilmington’s important history are now some of the town’s most popular attractions. Thalian Hall, a beautiful historic theater building, houses the oldest, continuously operating little theater company in the county. The main stage has hosted live entertainment and professional artists for more than 150 years. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Thalian Hall is the only surviving theatre designed by John Montague Trimble, one of America’s foremost 19th century theatre architects. Today, Thalian Hall hosts more than 250 diverse performances, including concerts, plays, movies, films, galas, musicals and other special events.

For a serene afternoon, visit Airlie Gardens—67 acres of Gilded Age gardens and lakes, which includes more than 100,000 azaleas, camellias and the 500-year-old Arlie Oak Tree. Depending on the time of year, you’ll also be greeted by tulip trees, daffodils and flowering apricot trees. Find what’s in bloom by visiting their website at AirlieGardens.org. As you traverse the trails throughout the garden, you will be led to unique destinations such as the freshwater Airlie Lake, boasting beautiful wildlife, including swans, the historic Mount Lebanon Chapel, Minnie Evans Glass Sculpture Garden and other special features. It’s no wonder these gardens are a popular venue for brides and grooms. To guarantee you don’t miss one of Wilmington’s most fascinating sites, take a ride with the Wilmington Trolley Company. Operating for 16 years, the company specializes in 45-minute narrated tours. Trolley riders will learn interesting details about Wilmington’s beautiful mansions, museums, TV and movie locations, African-American history, Civil War shipyards and birthplaces of famous natives. These narrated tours bring new life to the homes, people and events of downtown Wilmington and offer much more excitement than touring the city on your own. After dark, downtown lets its historic hair down as its many eateries, bars and lounges swell with revelers, and a variety of live music pours out into the storied streets. Nicknamed “Wilmywood,” it’s not all that uncommon to bump into the occasional actor or celebrity. Since downtown is home to Screen Gem Studios, the region has hosted a string of blockbuster movies and hit TV shows, such as Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill. Discover the many movies and shows filmed here by joining in on a Hollywood Location Walk, where you are led through real-life locations you’ll surely recognize from your favorite movie scenes. At night, ghost tours and haunted pub crawls meander though the town, with tour guides describing the eerie tales of local ghosts and ghouls. Legend has it that Wilmington is one of the country’s most haunted cities, as it’s occupied by the spirits of pirates, explorers and tradesmen with unfinished business. But why sit back and wonder about our haunted history? Take one of the many haunted tours offered here to find out for yourself. Day and night, Wilmington is alive with activity; yet it still retains that slow Southern atmosphere and quiet seaport charm. Whether you’re here to see the sights and museums or you prefer to just walk about and enjoy the riverfront view, you’ll soon realize the allure that this coastal town has held for hundreds of years.

corners of the house. The house features slanted porches to accommodate the draining of rainwater and a steep staircase, which was often visited by slaves and domestic servants. James’ son, Joseph—who ran the family’s estate after James—passed the responsibility of estate manager to his own son, David, right before the Civil War. However, both he and David died by the time the war began. Joseph’s wife, Mary, took management over the estate, but because of the Union troop advancement and yellow fever, Mary evacuated the estate with her younger children. She appealed to the Confederacy for her second eldest son, Joseph Thompson, to take care of the estate while she was gone. Because of this, the estate was preserved, and Mary returned home with her children after the war.

Wilmington History S
everal historic buildings of Wilmington remain after the Civil War. Green leaves are marked brown as long grey strands hang from the oak tree like the hair of an aging woman. Caged in the fences of the Sweeney Water Treatment Plant, the world’s largest living Christmas Tree is no longer holding Christmas lights; it holds only memories of past Christmases in Wilmington, North Carolina. The world’s largest living Christmas tree is dying. As news of this spread, Wilmington citizens’ sentiments were stirred as moments of Christmas past flooded their memories. Outsiders may never understand the value that the locals placed in this single tree. Maybe if it was preserved, visitors could marvel at the same beauty the citizens did since the 1920s, when they began this Christmas tradition of gathering around the large lit oak tree singing carols and visiting with Santa Claus. While we are left to wonder. Not all historical structures in Wilmington leave us questioning. There are antebellum buildings that still stand today. These well-preserved buildings rebel against Father Time and bear centuries of cultural footsteps. Some have even bore footsteps of soldiers, slaves and merchants during the Civil War. Together, we will take a walk back to the times of these buildings’ inceptions and its survival after The Civil War.
The Bellamy Mansion The mansion’s construction began in 1859. This four-story mansion belonged to Dr. John Bellamy. Enslaved black artisans built this building, which was styled in Greek Revival and Italianate. Containing 22 rooms, a belvedere and a slave quarters, the Bellamy family moved in before the 30

mansion was complete in 1861; however, they moved out by 1862. In fact, it was during the Civil War that the family moved out of the mansion. Both the fear of a Union invasion and of the yellow fever outbreak gripped the family and forced them to leave. The building eventually was invaded and used as a Union army headquarters. When the family returned to Wilmington by 1865, Dr. Bellamy was granted pardon from President Andrew Johnson to return to his war-stained house.
Thalian Hall Constructed from 1855 to 1858, John Montague Trimble designed this for the purpose of public entertainment at a time when Wilmington was the largest city in North Carolina. Before its construction, there was already a building dedicated to theater; however, the people of Wilmington desired a larger facility, which resulted in the creation of Thalian Hall. In addition, it was not only used for amusement, but it was also used for a government facility, a library and an opera house. During a Union siege of the Confederate’s Fort Fisher amid the Civil War, Thalian Hall closed for a week. Other than the one time closing, Thalian Hall did not suffer as other Confederate South businesses did during war. Thalian Hall continued to hold performances and draw willing audiences, including the Union troops.
Poplar Grove Manor House A house purchased by James Foy, Jr. in the 1790s, this manor house is a two-story building mostly built in the style of Greek Revival. Fluted posts with plain caps and bases reinforce the
Built for wealthy merchant and planter John Burgwin in 1770, this house of Georgian architecture is a three-story building with two tiers of white columns and gardens surrounding the rear. In the 1770s, the British displaced the Burgwins from their house, using it as a headquarters during the Revolutionary War. As time progressed, Thomas Grainger Wright purchased the house from John Burgwin; the house stayed in Wrights’ possession even throughout the Civil War. As a response to the Civil War and to the yellow fever epidemic, the house became abandoned again. It wasn’t until 1866 that the Wrights returned to the home; however, because of their investment in war bonds, the Wrights could no longer afford the house and sold it to the Wiggins. The home remained in the Wiggin family’s possession until 1930. In 1937, the house was purchased and became the headquarters for The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in North Carolina.
The Latimer House Local merchant Zebulon Latimer built this elegant house in 1852. This Italianate-style house was designed with four stories and 14 rooms. Because of his intentional symmetrical design, there are central hallways on each floor that all open to identical layouts on each side. At this house, see how life was before the Civil War. This house was built before air conditioning but was created with the ability to keep the house cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather. For instance, special windows were made that could manipulate airflow upward and draw hot air out of the house. There are also ornate chandeliers that still stand today. These chandeliers were originally operated by coal gas; however, Zebulon’s son would later adopt electricity. Each of these buildings has bore the weight of many footsteps throughout the years. They continue to do so as they are all open to the public for tours, shows and much more. —Robert Enriquez

The stars live in beautiful surroundings created by a Hollywood set crew. King Cobras rear up at eye-level; Black Mambas, sinister Gaboon Vipers and wicked-looking Fer-de-lance snakes are just a few of the rogues in this amazing, two-story, 10,000-sq.-foot gallery located on a historic site. “Sheena,” a 22 ft long Reticulated Python could swallow you whole! “Meeka,” the Giant Anaconda swims in her own waterfall. Green Mambas bask on tangled jungle vines. Spitting Cobras spit venom on the glass. Rattlesnakes rattle and strike. Some of the snakes are mating right in front of you (it’s obvious they love being here!).

A monster Alligator Snapping Turtle as big around as a truck tire could bite your whole hand off with one nip! Perhaps the most celebrated exhibit of all is the world’s largest collection of the rare and deadly Bushmaster snake, largest viper in the world. Over 130 different reptiles are on display, representing every corner of the world. Completing the cold-blooded family is the creator of all this, Dean Ripa, a man whose veins run with as much venom as blood. Bitten 14 times by venomous snakes over the course of his career, he has the distinction of being the most Bushmaster-bitten of all time. Bushmasters kill eighty percent of their victims, even with anti-venom treatment; Ripa has survived seven bushmaster bites to date. You can witness him climbing into the cage with these 8-foot monsters and feeding them off of the end of tiny barbecue tongs while lecturing you about the astonishing methods these vipers use to get prey. Dean spent 25 years traveling to the remote reaches of the earth to catch the snakes that are in his museum, and his life’s story is surely one of the most amazing anybody has ever lived to tell about. Located along the beautiful new Cape Fear River Walk in historic downtown Wilmington, the Serpentarium is simply the coo-o-olist place you’ve ever seen—a thrill for snake haters and snake lovers alike!

In the early 1800s, Fort Fisher kept the port of Wilmington open to blockade runners who were supplying goods to various Confederate armies inland. As one of the last supply lines running through Wilmington, Fort Fisher became a crucial supply route for Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. After a massive, amphibious assault on January 15, 1865, Fort Fisher was defeated leading to the Union taking control over southern North Carolina near the Cape Fear River, where they built what was to become the largest and most significant fort in the South. Two major battles were fought here, which is why there is only about 10 percent of the original land standing. ost visitors return here year after year to enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the “back in the day” 1950s as well as the “with it” happenings of today. This diverse community has an unparalleled quality of life with colorful houses passed down for generations amidst new beachfront condos and hotels. New attractions abound along with a unique boardwalk area, marinas, amusements for all ages, arcades, minigolf, Surrey bikes, campgrounds, a huge charter and fishing boat fleet, sports field, free movies, concerts and weekly fireworks. And that’s only the beginning. While vacationing in Carolina Beach, you won’t have a hard time finding something fun to do for every member of the family. Stroll down the nationally recognized, vintage seaside boardwalk that was ranked one of the top 10 boardwalks in the country by Food & Wine magazine. All along the boardwalk are dozens of unique shops, delicious restaurants and nightlife entertainment—especially during the summer. The boardwalk comes alive during the summer season like never before with the sound of music playing, people laughing and kids of all ages squealing as they whoosh by on an assortment of exciting rides at the seaside amusement park. 38

But the fun doesn’t stop there. All year long you will find something on the boardwalk to enjoy, whether it is surveying the ocean from the top of the Ferris wheel, tasting Carolina Beach sweets, such as homemade fudge, donuts and ice cream, while browsing the shops, or collecting tickets for the biggest prize at the local arcade. Earlier this year, a wider and longer boardwalk opened, extending all the way to the Pelican Lane public beach access. This nearly doubled the size of the former boardwalk. Future additions will include a splash pad park, cool-off stations, educational and historical kiosks and swings. As the heart and soul of this beach town, the Carolina Beach Boardwalk proves to be a favorite for both locals and visitors alike time and time again. Carolina Beach State Park is a popular coastal attraction, offering 761-acres of picnic areas, boating, fishing, wilderness hiking and an array of wildlife both animal and botanical. Here you will find a marina providing access to excellent fishing spots, some of the best in the state of North Carolina. If you are not much of an angler, spend the afternoon exploring the miles of hiking trails for beautiful scenery, the occasional wildlife and a variety of distinct habitats. You may even see the world’s most unique carnivorous plant, the Venus flytrap. If
you are having so much fun that you don’t want to leave, why not stay the night? The state park offers secluded camping areas located underneath the beautiful, towering trees. Enjoy nature with this amazing adventure. The Carolina Beach Lake Park is another great location that was once noted in the Guinness Book of World Records for its freshwater lake’s close proximity to salt water. Along with this 11-acre lake are a two-thirdsmile paved walkway, four gazebos, sheltered picnic area, playground equipment and amphitheater. Paddleboat rentals are available daily during the summertime and on weekends and holidays during the shoulder seasons. There are many more ways to experience the outdoors in Carolina Beach besides their parks. Rent a kayak and explore the coastline. Or rent a jet ski with a family member or friend and have an exciting day on the water. Take a surf

lesson or cast a line off of the Carolina Beach Fishing Pier. What makes Carolina Beach so great is the amount of fun, family-friendly activities available in the area. From Free Movies at the Lake to cruising the strip on a Surrey bike to simply spending the day soaking up the sun, building sandcastles and playing in the waves—the opportunities are endless! There are ways to have fun indoors as well. Come up close and personal with wild animals at the local aquarium, visit one of the art galleries, which are home to a variety of paintings, sculptures and home décor all made by artisans known both locally and worldwide, or spend the day shopping! You will find plenty of stores throughout the area providing trendy apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry and more. After an afternoon of shopping, plan a night out and try one of the many restaurants for a delicious meal. Start your day with a warm, homemade donut fresh from the oven, and end it with your favorite coastal cuisine at one of the many restaurants in the area serving great food, friendly service and a unique atmosphere. From fresh seafood that just came straight off the dock to hand-cut steaks, with a cold craft beer or glass of wine, you will surely enjoy treating yourself. But wait. There’s more! A farmers market with arts and crafts blossoms every Saturday, and it’s not far away from local surf schools, two four-wheel drive beach accesses, bike and kayak rentals, stand up paddleboarding and four great children’s parks. Needless to say, you and your family will have a wonderful time while vacationing in Carolina Beach. So much so that you will want to return next year to do it all over again!

SOUTHPORT
Historic Southport A Charming Seaside Retreat
F
ew locales are as captivating as the picturesque downtown of Southport. Age-old oak trees line the quaint city streets and frame stately Victorian homes, coastal cottages and historic buildings. The warm sea breeze touches everything here and, almost like magic, awakens the historic town into a bustling and cheerful coastal village. Established in 1792, Southport echoes of times past with its historic structures and traditional downtown commercial district. The quaint city streets seem to be taken from a vintage postcard, with old-fashioned storefronts shaded by the famous ancient oak trees. Today, modern shops, antique stores, boutiques and restaurants make up the downtown and offer a unique shopping experience. Find priceless antiques, unique arts and crafts, clothing, accessories and loads of gifts in every variety.
While the maritime heritage is undeniably strong in Southport, the city’s name reveals even more about its history as a coastal town. When the city was founded in 1792, it was actually named Smithville. For nearly a century, Smithville prospered as a fishing village and military town. It wasn’t until 1887 that the name was changed to Southport. Why, you ask? Well, it was anticipated to become a major port city due to its location on the Cape Fear River, Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. The port ended up moving farther upstream to Wilmington, but Southport kept the name and continued to grow as a beautiful, yet lowkey, seaside town. Among other things, Southport is known as one of the first areas in North Carolina to celebrate Independence Day. In commemoration, Southport is now home to the official North Carolina Fourth of July Festival every year, a four-day event that attracts visitors from around the region for fireworks, festival food and fun. continued on page 42

It was in the 2013 film Safe Haven that this very parade was re-created with locals acting as extras in the shots. Safe Haven released a casting call to Southport, expressing interest in using local residents to participate in a Fourth of July parade scene in the movie. Participants were given prizes and bragging rights for being part of the major motion picture! Not only were residents given a chance to be part of the movie, but Southport was also given doors, which acted as a main set piece from the movie. The doors labeled with “Ryan’s Port Market” were used in an exhibit featuring items from movies filmed in the area during the past three decades. The film also accented the beautiful, nearby beach showing off the town’s natural history. Learn more about Southport’s fascinating history on a self-guided walking tour created by the Southport Historical Society. The Historic Southport Trail is a one-mile route through the historic town, with stops at more than 20 landmarks including the Old Brunswick County Jail, Old Smithville Burial Ground and more. Pick up the brochure at the Fort Johnston-Southport Museum and Visitors Center at 203 E. Bay Street. Today the spirit of Southport’s maritime heritage can be found throughout the city. At Waterfront Park, watch large transoceanic ships from around the world make their way up the Cape Fear River to larger ports. Lighthouses beam in the distance as ferries, freighters, barges and sailboats cruise past. It is easy to spend an entire afternoon swaying gently on the wooden swings in the park just enjoying the view. From there, take a stroll up Riverwalk, a pathway that weaves around the riverfront through the Old Yacht Basin to the Southport Marina. Along the way, you can take in the sights and sounds of a true waterfront village—fishermen unloading the day’s catch, the horn of a distant ship and the sound of children prancing around in the shallow water. At the end of Riverwalk, you’ll find the immaculate Southport Marina, just steps from downtown. Sailboats, ships and cruisers make a spectacular sight with views of the Intracoastal Waterway and charming town streets. Get a deep look into Southport’s seafaring heritage at the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. Take a self-guided tour through the 12 stations, which highlight the nautical history of the Lower Cape Fear area of the state. You’ll see everything from a 2,000-year-old Native American canoe fragment to pirate memorabilia. One wall is covered with pictures of fishermen posing with their catch of the day.
WELCOME
CAPE FEAR JEWELERS Of course, bringing home those winning fish is one major reason people come to Southport. Its ideal location with access to so many plentiful waters allow for successful fishing year-round. Fishing tournaments, charters and commercial companies abound here. The result is not only a good time for anglers but a good time for diners as well. Area restaurants serve entrees fresh from the sea. Enjoy a bite of local flavor at one of the many downtown eateries, many of which offer outdoor seating and a comfortable atmosphere. Or pick up a fresh catch to bring home at the local fish house along the Yacht Basin. From shopping to fishing, strolling to just plain relaxing, Historic Southport is a great place to lose track of time. The picturesque seaport may leave you yearning to return, and you’re not alone—the town was rated as one of the Best Places to Retire by Rand McNally and Money Magazine picked it as one of the Best Vacations. So slip on some flip-flops, and enjoy a leisurely day around the treasured jewel that is Southport. Rest assured you’ll leave with plenty of shopping bags full of food, maybe some fresh catches and definitely a clear and relaxed state of mind.
Oak Island With more than 50 public beaches, loads of stores and family entertainment venues, two marinas and plenty of spots to launch a kayak or canoe, Oak Island has become a favorite for families visiting the Brunswick Islands. The island, just across the water from Southport, includes Caswell Beach and the Town of Oak Island, the largest town in Brunswick County. Despite its size, Oak Island has been able to retain a small-town atmosphere, even in the summer months when the population swells with sun-seekers and surfers. Named after the beautiful live oaks which line the island’s streets and inlets, Oak Island is as scenic as it is friendly. From the sandy beaches to the Davis Canal, a quiet waterway that winds its way through the island, there are plenty of recreational opportunities for the whole family. Golfing, boating, fishing, mini-golf and a wide variety of sports are complemented by the vast amount of public beaches, parks and fishing piers. Kayak through the scenic canals or fish off the pier, then take a break and amble over to the Oak Island Lighthouse. Built in 1858, the 148-foot-tall beacon was turned over to the Town of Caswell Beach and decommissioned as a working lighthouse in 2004. Today, you can make a reservation to tour the grounds and climb to the top of the tower for a breathtaking view. Most accommodations on Oak Island are rental cottages, although hotels and condos are available as well. Rental companies provide a wide range of beach homes for any family size. Whether you aim to stay for a weekend, a week or even through the summer, you are guaranteed a low-key, seaside escape.

Perfect greens and stunningly scenic courses are open year-round. With the diversity of species in our surrounding waters, fishing beginners and enthusiasts alike can find an abundance of places to cast a line. Calabash, known as the “Seafood Capital of the World,” boasts more than 30 seafood restaurants and hosts more than one million diners each year. Stretching from Wilmington’s bustling downtown with its plethora of dining, retail and sightseeing activities, winding all the way down through the languid Brunswick Isles of North Carolina, your dream vacation is just waiting to be discovered.
SUNSET BEACH A Small Piece Of Paradise A one-lane pontoon bridge connects the southernmost island in Brunswick County to the mainland, setting the scene for the quiet, coastal atmosphere that defines Sunset Beach. The smallest of the Brunswick Islands, Sunset Beach is a peaceful place, with only a few shops for beach supplies, bicycle rentals and other necessities—like ice cream. Three miles of expansive beach stretch out in front of wide sand dunes, and dozens of wooden pathways connect the rows of beach cottages to the sand and surf. The other side of the island is lined with bright green marshes and peaceful waters, the perfect place to kayak, canoe or go turtle spotting. Just across the bridge, there are dozens of golf courses, Calabash’s collection of seafood restaurants and plenty of retail and entertainment venues. But few feel the need to leave the quiet island paradise, where a day can be spent riding your bike along the shore, swimming in crystal clear waters and lying in the sand watching the first stars speckle the sky.

SHALOTTE A Small Town With Leisurely Charisma

This perfect quiet island escape is in the center of it all, with many exciting attractions just a short drive away. With less than 900 full-time residents, Holden Beach is a quiet community yearround, even during the summer when the population swells to well over 10,000. The tight-knit groups of locals have a strong pride in their serene beach town and are always welcoming visitors whom return year after year for a taste of total relaxation. Holden Beach was named one of the best family beaches in the country by National Geographic Traveler magazine. There is a wealth of wholesome fun to be had from the sea to the sound. Spend an afternoon fishing off a dock, search for newly washed-up shells on the beach or just spread out a towel and enjoy your front row seat to another magnificent summer day.

CALABASH
Seafood Capital of the World
C
by RAY BALOGH
alabash boasts more than 30 restaurants, many situated on the Calabash River, which laces along the town’s southern border. The roster exudes the mom-and-pop intimacy of the seafood dining establishments. The entrees are among the freshest in the world. Diners can sup outside and watch the daily fishing boat crews carry just-caught shrimp, oyster, clams, grouper, flounder and blue crabs onto the restaurant’s dock and through the back door. Hush puppies accompany many meals. Typically made from cornmeal, flour, eggs and sugar, and sometimes chopped onion and sweet milk. They are dropped into hot fat, fried to a golden brown and often served as soon as the customers take their seats. The number of people served is anything but small town. Calabash’s seafood eateries dish up more than a million meals a year to locals and tourists drawn to the dinner table by the ubiquitous, succulent aroma of its eponymous style of cooking. “Calabash’s biggest industry is tourism,” said City Clerk Sue Stuhr. “It is estimated that during peak season, 20,000 day trippers visit Calabash. The people come to eat true Calabash-style seafood.” To further mark its brand, the municipality held its inaugural “A Taste of Calabash” festival in April 2016 at its community park—a festival that received “popular feedback,” according to Stuhr. The event featured seafood samples from 18 participating eateries, along with nonprofit and craft vendors, live entertainment on the beach, children’s games and other family-friendly activities. The next festival is slated for Saturday, April 22, 2017. The precise origin of the local style of cooking is lost to history, but an informal consensus pegs the genesis to the riverside fish camps operated by several families in the 1930s and ’40s. All the families opened seafood restaurants featuring the patented cooking process and forever cemented the town’s fame. 46

Stuhr noted, “Legend has it that in the 1930s, fishermen brought in their catch and were met by locals to see what was caught and what they could buy. Calabash became known for its fine quality fresh shrimp and fish. Most of the fishing crews ate nearby and the smells of fresh fish cooking brought the locals to find out the source of the delicious smells and buy leftovers. “When a local businessman, Clinton Morse, started serving tubs of deep-friend seafood that had been dipped in a light, seasoned batter, cooked gold brown and served hot, Calabashstyle seafood came to be, and has been enjoyed ever since.” Lucy Coleman always greeted customers of Beck’s Seafood Restaurant with a friendly demeanor and wide smile. Perhaps the most famous of her patrons was comedian Jimmy Durante, who affectionately referred to her a “Mrs. Calabash.” A frequent, satisfied diner of the restaurant, Durante told Coleman he would make her famous. From then on, he signed off his weekly television show with the iconic, “Good night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” As Stuhr is quick to point out, though, Calabash is not just about seafood. “There are numerous specialty shops featuring gourmet food and boutiques filled with captivating wares as well as local art galleries offering works by local and other artists,” she said. “The area is a golfer’s paradise, with some 30 golf courses within 30 minutes of the community.” She added, “Beaches lie within minutes of the town, offering outdoor beach activities including watersports, surfing, swimming and beachcombing, deep sea fishing, boat rentals, jet ski rentals, kayaking and more. “During the summer weeks, the town sponsors a free summer concert series in the community park each Tuesday evening, featuring a lineup of live beach music bands and food vendors in the park that draw a crowd of as many as 1,000 residents and visitors. We also have a spectacular fireworks display each Fourth of July.” Calabash is a unique community who welcomes all— whether they come for a vacation, a day trip or plan to relocate and make Calabash their home. For more information, visit www.TownOfCalabash.net; or call the Calabash Town Hall at 910-579-6747.
Calabash is: A. A gourd first cultivated for use as a water container. B. The contour of a river which resemble the gourd. C. A method of cooking in which seafood is dipped in a light, seasoned batter, cooked golden brown and served hot. D. A town on the southern tip of North Carolina known as “The Seafood Capital of the World.” E. All of the above. The answer is “E. All of the above.” Though there is some disagreement whether the small fishing village of just under 2,000 year-round residents derived its name from the gourd or the river bend, no one can seriously dispute it has merited the appellation as the mecca for its uniquely prepared seafood.

COfatch The Day Local Shrimping Brings Life To Brunswick Islands’ Industry
A
s the sun peeks over the horizon to usher in a new day on the Atlantic, hardworking shrimpers cast their first skimmer trawls into the Carolina coastal waters. Steadily, they guide their boats through the same shallow waters that their fathers and grandfathers have navigated for more than a century. For years, tourists have traveled to the area to take advantage of the delectable shrimp that North Carolina has to offer. This region’s relatively warm ocean waters, strong tidal currents and proximity to rivers and creeks create the ideal environment for producing high-quality shrimp. Three types of shrimp are available in North Carolina. Brown shrimp, the most abundant, is the backbone of the Brunswick Islands fishing industry. The state also harvests smaller amounts of white and pink shrimp. There is a multitude of shrimp in North Carolina. In fact, the state harvests about 5 million pounds of shrimp annually. Despite the availability of fresh, locally caught shrimp, many vendors are relying on seafood sourced outside North Carolina, and sometimes even outside the country. This is a detriment to fishing families that have called the Brunswick Islands home for generations. Fortunately, the tides could be turning for local fishermen. Brunswick Catch is a nonprofit organization that helps local fishermen by promoting the seafood industry in Brunswick Islands. They encourage residents and visitors to purchase only local seafood. The organization is composed of commercial fishermen, seafood retailers, wholesalers,
CATCH
restaurant owners and other people who are interested in preserving and expanding the local seafood industry. Look for the Brunswick Catch logo at seafood markets and restaurants. That lets you know you are receiving quality shrimp found in the waters of North Carolina. It also lets you know you are putting money back into the pockets of local fishermen and their families. Brunswick Catch aims to serve as a knowledgeable guide to educate people on what shrimp is available throughout the year, how to recognize if it is fresh and how to cook it. Speaking of cooking, there are a variety of easy and delectable dishes to whip up while you’re enjoying your time in the Brunswick Islands. Try basic scampi with lemon, butter, garlic and white wine. Light the grill, and toss on some shrimp kabobs marinated in lime juice, coconut milk, rum and honey. Maybe you can spice things up with a shrimp and sausage jambalaya, or make a classic Calabash-style shrimp served with cocktail sauce that the kids will enjoy. To find retailers and restaurants that support fishermen in Brunswick Islands, go to BrunswickCatch.com. You can also learn more about the state’s seafood industry at NC-Seafood.org. —John M. HOMEGROWN
Homegrown Goodies Taste North Carolina’s Bountiful Coast
T
he art of food has been an important tradition in North Carolina’s kitchens for generations, stemming from family dinners centered on freshly caught seafood and recently harvested veggies. Now, coastal cuisine is evolving into culinary masterpieces, which still feature local fare as the main attraction. Chefs understand that vacation is the one time of year that you can get away without having a care in the world. Because of this, they want to make food the last thing you worry about but the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast. 52

Juicy, red tomatoes, cool, crisp cucumbers and plump blueberries create a delicious rainbow of flavor when proudly displayed at a local farmer’s market. If you’ve visited the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast during the summer months, chances are you’ve passed by one of the many farm stands and possibly even stopped to snag some of the precious bounty provided by area farmers. Here you’ll see an abundance of fresh goodies including vibrant yellow squash, zucchini, sweet corn, okra, butter beans, grapes, luscious watermelon and cantaloupe, peaches, an assortment of berries, herbs and so much more. Some markets even offer local honey. Let’s not forget the main attraction that draws folks from all around to North Carolina’s shores: the fresh bounty of seafood. Surrounded by oceans, bays and inlets, this part of North Carolina is rich with fresh seafood year-round. Some of the most pristine coastal areas are right
around the corner, and thousands of fishermen make a living off of reeling in an assortment of fish, including grouper, mahi-mahi, tuna, swordfish, mackerel and shellfish. With more than 30 seafood restaurants within a square mile, the town of Calabash is known as the “Seafood Capital of the World.” The quaint town is a mecca for seafood lovers—especially those who love fish served “Calabash-style” or deep-fried in seasoned cornmeal batter. If you’re making a trip to Calabash, it’s best to come on an empty stomach; many restaurants serve up huge portions and all-you-can-eat platters. Other seafood delicacies, which abound on the North Carolina coast, are oysters and crabs. They’re served a variety of ways. Many restaurants have their own take on crab cakes and crab dip—and yes, the recipes are a secret. Hard shell crabs are served steamed and seasoned with Old Bay, while soft shell crabs can be found fried, broiled or sautéed and often in sandwiches. Of course since chefs have such a broad variety of fish caught fresh each day, the menu options will be different each time. Look for the blackboard listing or check with your server about the day’s fresh catch, which is served in an endless amount of ways—steamed, fried, blackened or Calabash-style. Area chefs use their creative licenses to create delicious dishes with distinctive twists, combining seafood and fresh ingredients from local farms. As seafood is such a unique part of the local culture, coastal Carolinians will find any excuse to enhance a dish with shrimp, crab or fish—and breakfast dishes are no exception. One popular breakfast side is shrimp and grits, the perfect combination of influences from the salty coast and the butter-sweet South. While preparation varies among the restaurants—and in family recipes—shrimp and grits is typically made with a generous helping of butter, chopped onions and parsley, with the occasional dash of Old Bay or Tabasco sauce to give it that extra kick. However, the most famous dish in the Tar Heel state has to be Carolina barbecue. First, understand that the word “barbecue” and the word “grilling” are not synonymous, and in this neck of the woods, barbecue means pork— not chicken or beef. Carolina barbecue is a combination of pork, heat and smoke, which makes for tender, rich, succulent meat that is chopped and usually paired with a thin vinegar sauce. There are some varieties in the way barbecue is cooked, but nobody is more proud of their barbecue than North Carolinians. Whether you choose barbecue, seafood or juicy steak, you’ll be delighted by the dining options on the Brunswick Islands and Cape Fear Coast—from casual family restaurants and upscale eateries to dining in the comfort of your beach home. But no matter where you eat, rest assured you’ll get a scrumptious helping of local treats with a side of that good, old-fashioned Southern charm with every meal.

SIGNATURE DESSERT Hot Rum Bananas Foster for Two It was 1952 in a New Orleans restaurant where the Bananas Foster was born! A chef by the name of Chef Paul Blange was challenged to make a signature dessert using bananas. With New Orleans being the major port for incoming Central American bananas, the resources were endless. So, Chef Paul created Bananas Foster. Chef Paul’s dessert was named for Richard Foster, who, as chairman, served on the New Orleans crime commission, a civic effort to clean up the French Quarter. Havana’s has taken on the tradition of Chef Paul’s famous dessert and serves it hot to order. We hope you enjoy this dessert as much as we do!

When Michael McGowan passed away in October 2012, his family, friends, customers and the entire community lost a special person. Although Michael was a Cystic Fibrosis patient and lung transplant recipient, he would not allow physical conditions to limit or define who he was or how he lived. He was a champion for those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. He and his wife Shelly poured their energies and imagination into their family and business, Michael’s Seafood Restaurant. Michael and Shelly became a vital part of Pleasure Island and we have been richer as a community for all that they have given and done. We all knew Michael as a renowned Chef and for his international award winning seafood chowder, but what made him a person so loved and respected was the way he chose to live his life: as an awesome husband, father and son; to be active in his community as a volunteer, by sponsoring athletic teams; holding spirit nights to donate a percentage of a day’s income to local schools; organizing the annual Shrimp Open Golf Tournament to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Duke Lung Transplant Program; and to always greet his customers with enthusiasm and genuine desire to provide them with the best service to make their dining experience a pleasure. Through it all, medically, professionally and personally, Michael always gave back, not only for medical research but in every way, every day. There was nothing limited in the life of Michael McGown except too short a time with us. Shelly is committed to keeping Michael’s legacy alive and will continue operating Michael’s Seafood Restaurant. Michael will always hold a special place in all of our hearts.
