Flowing Florals

Unstructured bridal bouquets are a blossoming trend this season. We love the way these loose, lovely arrangements appear effortless and often incorporate natural elements like branches, mosses or ferns. Ask your florist to create an organic look that enhances the romance with more free-flowing and less traditional flowers. Photo by Amanda Hedgepeth Bouquet provided by Norfolk Wholesale Floral

Gatsby Gala

M

Many brides are falling for the Great Gatsbythemed wedding, and it’s easy to see why. Draped in extravagance and overflowing with sheer, over-the-top prestige and glam, the Gatsby wedding is fancy, frivolous and undeniably fun. Make the theme your own by decorating with vintage items from local antique stores. We scoured a few shops in Coastal Virginia to inspire you to get started.

What better way to keep the Moët cold than with a lion head champagne bucket? $24.99. From Red Feathered Nest, Newport News. While you’re sipping your way to absolute splendor, drape some pearls on yourself and throughout your décor for an upscale touch. Small pearl strand, $12. Elle faux pearls, $9. Elle pop beads, $18. All from Attic Treasures Antique Mall, Elle Le Ghent, Norfolk. Go over the top with this vintage cake topper, $24.99. From Red Feathered Nest, Newport News. Cloth napkins are a must, and vintage is always preferred. Vintage linen napkin set of 6, $12. Fancy them up a bit by adding a mix and match of art deco jewelry. Vintage costume jewelry necklace, art deco black and gold, $14. Both from Red Feathered Nest, Newport News. Have your bartender serve Gin Rickey with a splash of seltzer out of this 1950 silver mesh seltzer bottle, $50. From Red Feathered Nest, Newport News. Your look wouldn’t be complete without the signature Gatsby headband, created with a beaded headband, $6, and rhinestone pearl brooch, $9. Both from Attic Treasures Antique Mall, Elle Le Ghent, Norfolk. You didn’t expect guests to be forced to share salt and pepper shakers, did you, old sport? Individual place setting salt and pepper shakers add an adorable touch to table settings and would make a perfect gift for the glitzy bride and groom, $15. From Red Feathered Nest, Newport News. Since you’re modeling your wedding after a book, it’s only appropriate to incorporate book stacks into your décor. These raw stacks are perfect for centerpieces or table numbers! Raw book stack, $15. Black and silver art deco costume jewelry pin, $12. Both from Red Feathered Nest, Newport News.

Laughter In Love Tips For Keeping Stress Away When Planning The Big Day By Anne Leonard

W

We’ve all heard the horror stories. Friends and families divide over seating charts or a mental breakdown ensues over the catering company, then the newly engaged couple peer from the outskirts with one thought: that will never be me. Last spring my high school sweetheart put on a darling proposal, and we walked down the aisle three months later in the heat of summer. Friends and family applauded my lack of stress and happy-go-lucky attitude toward wedding planning (without a wedding planner) under a time crunch. I believe whether your wedding season is a three-month period or a year-long endeavor, you have the choice to become a werewolf or a Gandhi. Here’s how you can avoid bridezilla fever:

Specializing in affordable fabulous wedding receptions! • Beachfront Wedding Ceremonies • Receptions for up to 140 Guests • Full Service Bridal Consultant on Staff • Customized Catering and Menu Planning

Don’t be afraid to get a little bossy. Alright, quiet-spoken introverts, this might be a challenge, but it will save you loads of pressure later. So, divide and conquer! This means delegating tasks to your bridesmaids, mother, or any other friends you trust to help you get more checks on your never-ending lists, which brings me to my next point. Stay organized. Delegate tasks in a timely manner. You can’t expect your bridesmaids or family members to reciprocate a hefty task with a week’s notice. Organization means different things to different people. If you have a wedding planner, then the pressure may be less demanding, but when you’re trying to save money or tackle DIY projects, lists help. Maybe keep a notebook for all of your ideas and deadlines. Or perhaps you make a Google Doc so that everyone is on the same page with your idea-flooded brain. Google Docs are nifty because you can access and edit them anytime and anywhere. I used mine for an address database, budgeting and the big day’s itinerary. Take time for yourself to veg out. Maybe this means watching

Gossip Girl and not admitting you actually binge-watched it for four hours. Perhaps it’s going to mush in a massage chair for a pedicure. Or maybe you need to run your stress out. Regardless of your path back to peace, allotting time for yourself will dampen the fuse for exploding on your loved ones.

Scan for special packages and info!

Be flexible. Pause and reflect that at the end of the day, the Big Day is about you and your significant other. Don’t get locked in the fine-tuned details. Suppose someone forgot a special set of flutes you wanted to use for your champagne toast or your music didn’t play while your guests were waiting. Ten or 20 years down the road, the minute details of your wedding day will be a fog. It’s important to manage your expectations and be content that your wedding might not match up to your fairytale adolescent dream. In marriage, it’s important to laugh at the little moments that always seem to go awry during the most inconvenient time. Why not start now and laugh off the unexpected mishaps during wedding planning?

There’s something unmistakably adorable about old items that have been reimagined and crafted into gorgeous, totally new versions of themselves, and brides simply can’t resist the draw of shabby chic wedding accents. French provincial-style vanities, antique farmhouse tables, vintage wooden desks—we can’t seem to get enough of this look. Here are some suggestions for finding the perfect pieces to accent your big day: Scour your belongings. That old desk in the attic with the paint that’s chipping? Don’t throw it out! As long as the problems are only aesthetic, your old furniture and knick knacks can be scraped, painted and waxed to look better than brand new. There are plenty of easy-to-follow DIY tutorials you can find on Pinterest with tips and tricks on how to do it. Go yard sale-ing and Craigslist-ing. People are always getting rid of old furniture due to relocating or upgrading. Dedicate a few Saturday mornings to trea-

sure hunting at local yard sales. Download the app “Yard Sale Treasure Map” to really make your trip efficient. The app creates a map of all the local yard sales going on in your area by accessing Craigslist ads for yard sales. Poke around at thrift stores and antique shops. The former usually sell things for cheaper prices, but quality is usually not as stellar as items sold at antique shops. There’s always a chance you’ll snag a phenomenal find at one of these places. So do your research on the best shops in your areas, recruit a bridesmaid or close friend to join you and start hunting Go to a specialized boutique. This is probably the priciest option, but sometimes you just can’t resist an adorable chic boutique full of gorgeous upcycled furniture. The person who reconstructs the pieces is often the shop owner, so don’t hesitate to haggle a little, as long as you’re being fair. It also doesn’t hurt to ask them for tips on your own projects as well.

Keeping It Comfy A Few Tips For Making Sure Guests Stay Happy At An Outdoor Wedding No Matter The Weather Even in our modern world of Supper Doppler meteorology, we still can’t always predict the weather. Fortunately, we can at least plan for it. Here are a few ways to make sure your guests are focused on your awesome outdoor wedding, not on how much they’re sweating (or shivering!).

For a fall wedding:

Provide blankets and shawls for your guests. Even if it was 70 degrees last week, you just never know. This is especially important if your guests will be outside when the sun is going down. Tastefully place baskets at the ends of seating rows with the cover-ups, and your guests are sure to be grateful in the event they need them. Make sure you have an indoor back-up plan. If you’ve been living in Virginia for any amount of time, you know how fickle fall weather can be. It’s fine to plan an outdoor fall wedding, but make sure you have a backup plan in case it ends up raining or being too cold to reasonably keep it outdoors. If your reception is indoors, check with the venue to see if it’s possible to use it as a back-up plan in case of poor weather. Otherwise, find a nearby church or center that you can book as a back-up. Serve warm beverages. This is another great way to incorporate the fall theme into the wedding. Serve something fun that fits with the style of the wedding—hot chocolate, hot apple cider, maybe even hot chai lattes.Turning their attention to a fabulous drink will help take guests’ minds off of the cold.

Double your program as a personal fan. This is an easy DIY project with cardboard and Popsicle sticks, or something you can easily order from a myriad of websites like Etsy and Zazzle. Not only are these programs adorable, but they’re perfect for helping your guests cool off on a toasty day. Provide sunscreen, cold water bottles and towels. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference sometimes, and keeping these items on hand for your wedding guests really shows that you’re concerned about their comfort.

Fall Is The Perfect Time To Spruce Up Your Décor With Some Adorable Favorites

T

By Chelsea Sherman There’s a lot that goes into choosing wedding décor. Hours of planning, making appointments, flipping through Pinterest boards—and everything seems to be either expensive to purchase or tedious to craft. Fortunately, there are some great ways to make memorable wedding decorations by simply using items that are readily available during your wedding season. Fall is the perfect time to incorporate seasonal elements into your wedding, as there are multitudes of options to choose from. Here are five adorable seasonable favorites that are sure to spruce up your wedding décor without busting your budget:

Fall leaves: This is such an easy way to create pretty seasonal accents without spending more money at the florist. Brightly-colored autumn leaves are naturally beautiful, and all you need to do is step outside a few days before your wedding to collect them and voilà! free wedding décor. Add them to your centerpieces, use them to accent the cake table, line the aisle with them or even pass buckets out to your guests to toss in lieu of rice during your grand exit!

Pumpkins: Pumpkins are everywhere in the fall. If you choose to feature pumpkins at your wedding, there will be no shortage of supply. Pumpkins perfectly convey the spirit of the autumn season—not to mention they smell (and taste!) delicious.

Gourds: It sounds funny, but gourds are actually a great idea for decorating your fall wedding. Accent your floral arrangements beautifully and surprise your guests with your creativity by incorporating a cute cornucopia or a homemade gourd candle holder.

Hay bales: Hay bales are an adorable addition to a fall wedding, and they can serve so many purposes. They can be used as quasi-tables for your various displays, such as the guest book or your wedding favors. Covered with some burlap or other material, they can even be dressed up and used as a unique method of seating for an outdoor wedding ceremony.

Pinecones: Like the bright fall leaves, pinecones are simply everywhere in the fall. They can be used to decorate anywhere, from the centerpieces to the ceremony aisle. You can also use pinecones as name card holders for your seating chart.

Tying the Nautical Knot

There’s Water, Water Everywhere In This Maritime Romance Compiled by D’Andrea Doyle Photography by Bolling Photography, www.BollingPhotography.com Who: Leslie Hope Holthoff, owner of Leslie Hope Consulting, and Michael Edward Martin, pretreatment and pollution prevention manager for the Hampton Roads Sanitation District. When: Oct. 5, 2013. Where: The wedding took place in the middle of the James River, departing originally from Mulberry Point. The reception followed at the Gatling Pointe Yacht Club in Smithfield. Guest List: The couple invited 27 of their closest friends and family onto the yacht for the ceremony, and approximately 100 guests attended the reception. Guests traveled from other parts of Virginia and Maryland. Where They Met: Both Leslie and Michael had been racing rafts. After the race, there was a reception on a large boat, and this is where they officially met. Engagement: Michael proposed to Leslie on a cruise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. “We met on the water; we got engaged on the water,” Leslie says. Wedding Wishes: The couple sees themselves as being nonchalant and simplistic and wanted their wedding to be the same. “We could have been married on the side of the road and still be happy,” Leslie says. What’s Next: The couple traveled to Nashville immediately after the wedding for their honeymoon.

Rings

Leslie chose a blue stone because she loves the color blue, and it just so happens to be Michael’s birthstone color.

Date

Since the wedding was in October, Leslie was concerned about the weather being too cold, but fate had it that it would be in the 80s.

Anchor Bracelets

The anchors were a vital part of the nautical-themed wedding and were given to Leslie’s mother and Michael’s sister as gifts.

Flowers

Leslie’s flowers came from Somethin’ Borrowed Or New in Carrollton.

couple

Leslie and Michael’s nautical wedding turned out just as they had planned. “I wouldn’t change a single thing,” Leslie says.

Cake

The couple was torn between a formal cake and a funny cake, so they went with both. This one illustrates the couple raft racing to the finish line.

Nautical Bliss

Raft racing is what brought the couple together, and it provided inspiration throughout the day. “We tried to do nothing traditional,” Leslie says.

Dress

Leslie’s dress featured a nautical cord to go along with their theme. “I went through about four dresses, and I wanted that one the entire time,” she recalls.

Spring Fling Romance Blossoms At This Natural Garden Celebration Compiled by Angela Blue Photography by Tara Liebeck Photography, www.TaraLiebeckPhoto.com Who: Jen Cook, a teacher, and Larry Hill, an Army officer. When: April 19, 2014. Where: Hermitage Museum & Gardens, Norfolk. Guest List: One hundred guests attended the wedding. Most were from Virginia, and some traveled from out of state. Where They Met: Larry and Jen attended Virginia Military Institute together. They vaguely knew one another but never talked. When Jen began teaching in Korea, Larry was stationed there with the Army. The two were re-introduced through Jen’s friend, and they soon started dating. The Engagement: The couple was at the top of Seoul Tower, and Larry asked someone to take a picture of them. All of a sudden he was down on one knee! Wedding Wishes: The couple wanted a relatively small, informal and fun celebration. Keeping with the spring spirit, they envisioned their wedding being fresh, natural and relaxed. What’s Next: Larry and Jen moved to Germany just a couple weeks after the wedding.

First Kiss

Jen describes their first kiss and “great” and “goofy.” “Larry was cracking jokes while we were up there,” she says.

Jellybeans

Each guest was treated to a bag of jellybeans at this Easter Eve wedding.

Bouquet

Palette of Petals arranged the bouquets. Jen asked for Virginia spring flowers—particularly dogwoods.

Ribbons

Larry’s mother and some of her friends created ribbons for the bride and groom’s sendoff.

Centerpieces

The flowers came from Palette of Petals in Virginia Beach, and the table numbers were made of peanut shells.

Pies

Instead of cake, the couple opted for an assortment of pies from East Beach Catering. Jen says the lemon meringue pies were especially popular.

Seating Chart

The couple’s wedding planner, Julie Morgan, found the window panes used for the seating chart, and Jen wrote the names with a glass marker.

Couple

Jen says she appreciated Larry’s sense of humor on their wedding day. “He was joking around and having fun and made sure everyone else did too.”

Yellow shoes with veil

Jen bought the shoes at DSW for a bridal shower but loved them so much she decided to wear them for the wedding. Her mother made the veil.

Big Day Brunch

Time You’re an early bird; that’s great! Not all of your guests share the same enthusiasm for waking up at dawn, so it’s best not to plan your ceremony before 9 a.m. Besides, do you really want to wake up at 5 a.m. to start doing hair and makeup? Somewhere between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. is ideal for a brunch reception.

A Morning Matrimony Inspires An Intimate, Casual And Cost-Effective Celebration

Budget Most venues are less expensive to rent in the morning since typical weddings take place during evening hours. Guests will drink less alcohol since it’s earlier in the day. Sometimes less drinking means less dancing, so you may not need to hire a DJ. Classical guitar or violin music would be a delightful accompaniment to the festivities, or if you do hire a DJ, choose softer tunes.

By Angela Blue

I

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day and your wedding day is the most important day of your life, naturally the two should go together. Having a brunch reception takes away some of the stresses of planning since it’s less formal, and as an added bonus, it will save money. So, raise a mimosa (or a Bloody Mary) to the best day of your life and the best meal of your day.

30

Dress There’s no rule about the style of gown you should wear for a brunch wedding, but you can certainly get away with a shorter, more playful dress at this time of the day, complemented by a looser hairstyle. Photos No need to feel rushed to get the best photos before the sun goes down— you’ll have all day! The morning sun can inspire some beautiful photos, so take advantage of this ideal lighting. If you choose to do the “first look,” have your photographer get romantic sunrise photos of you and your groom. Décor There’s no need for extravagant centerpieces or costly decorations. Brunch is meant to be intimate and casual, so opt for small, fresh flower arrangements or decorative bowls of fruit for guests to nosh. Put a customized crossword puzzle next to each place setting to go along with the morning routine theme, and have the clues be fun facts about your relationship.

Food Keep it simple by having various stations for guests to visit. Imagine pancake stations where guests add their own blueberries, strawberries, bananas or chocolate chips to the mix or omelet stations loaded with chopped veggies, fresh herbs and cheeses to choose. Grit stations are a popular option, too. Drinks Stations are the way to go here as well. Set up a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar with a lavish assortment of garnishes including stuffed olives, pickled asparagus, artichoke hearts, jumbo cocktail shrimp and bacon. You can even have fun with flavored vodkas including bacon, tomato, jalapeno and dill pickle. If you want to go a little lighter on the liquor, you can set up a mimosa bar complete with freshly squeezed juices (orange, cranberry, grapefruit, mango, peach and pineapple) and fruit garnishes. Don’t forget non-alcoholic options like hot chocolate and plenty of coffee. To Cake or Not to Cake? To cut expenses further, you can get away with not having a cake this early in the day, as long as you supplement with sweet treats like scones, muffins, sweetbreads and doughnuts. If you choose to serve cake, go with something light like lemon, orange, almond or a crepe cake.

LACE Putting A Modern Spin On A Timelessly Feminine Fabric By Angela Blue Lace was once considered a symbol of affluence since only the wealthy could afford such a prestigious material. Queen Victoria popularized the fabric by wearing lace trim on her wedding gown, and soon the tradition stuck. The intricate material still has a vintage appeal, but these aren’t your grandmother’s lace wedding gowns. Designers are freshening the concept by adding appliqués and soft layers for a modern glamour. Today lace continues to be adored for its peek-aboo quality, a mix of modesty, sensuality and pure femininity.

Living so close to the cherished

spots where the ocean waves meet

the sandy shores has its obvious perks. There are endless places to tie the knot where couples are guaranteed a

magnificent backdrop, a chance to dig their toes into the sand and perhaps a refreshing salty spray from the ocean during the ceremony. We spent a day traipsing around some of our most beloved Virginia Beach locales and brought with us a collection of gowns that are just beachy. 44

Shake It Up, Baby The Red Hot Love Candy Apple Cocktail Gets Things Heated

Two Tasty Tips

You may consider gifting your guests The Mason Shaker, a hot product inspired by the classic southern icon, The Mason Shaker is a unique four-piece Mason Jar cocktail shaker that harkens to American eras past. Just toss in our ingredients for the cocktail – and voila! www.MasonShaker.com Also, make sure your apple cider comes from Virginia – known for apples and other awesome agricultural products. Find local markets at the Department of Agriculture’s website. www.VDACS.Virginia.gov/VaGrown

Apples are one of the most fabulous flavors of fall, and, although it’s pretty hard to improve on Mother Nature, I kind of think you can when one of those gorgeous crisp, fresh fruits is skewered on a stick and dipped in a cinnamon red candy mixture. Not only is our Red Hot Love Candy Apple Cocktail a great quaff to serve at an autumn wedding reception, but playing on a hot trend right now, you can also have a great favor for guests to take home. Fill a mason jar about halfway with Granny Smith apple green confetti, and tuck in a small plastic bag tied with a frilly ribbon that has about a tablespoon of prepared apple pie spice; you can find this at most grocery stores. Add a miniature-sized bottle of cinnamon-flavored whiskey, such as Fireball, and instructions typed out and glued on kraft paper for creating the cocktail: “Empty cinnamon whiskey into jar. Add apple spice mix. Fill jar halfway with ice, and fill jar completely with apple cider. (Place on lid). Shake it up.” This creates a very generous-sized and very delicious drink. Decorate the outside of the mason jar simply with kraft paper, a stylized initial of the couple, and the name of the drink. Cheers!
