Coastal Cuisine Enjoy a taste of the crystal coast
W
aves crash in the background as the sun sets on yet another blissful day on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. Friends gather on patios of restaurants and beach houses, sipping local wine and craft beer, reminiscing about past moments, sharing stories and laughter with one another. But when the food arrives, the busy chatter is reduced to a soft hush as eyes grow wide with delight, diners experience foods incomparable to anything they’ve tried before and newfound passions are created just from a single bite. The art of food has been an important tradition in North Carolina’s kitchens for generations, stemming from family dinners consisting of steamed seafood pots and evolving into culinary creations such as succulent shrimp cocktail perched on martini glasses, rich and creamy she-crab soup with sweet chunks of crab meat and freshly caught grouper served over wild rice. Local chefs understand that vacation is the one time of year that you can get away without having a care in the world. Because of this, they want to make food the last thing you worry about but the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Crystal Coast. From upscale seafood restaurants to local barbecue joints, there will be something on the menus to suit every budget and every palate. Dine alfresco next to crashing waves, or kick back dockside and enjoy happy hour as the sun melts away. Surrounded by oceans,
bays and inlets, this part of North Carolina is blessed with a bounty of fresh seafood year round. Fishing has been a part of Crystal Coast heritage for more than 400 years, from the whaling industry in the 18th century, to the mullet and oyster trade in the 19th century, to the thriving modern seafood industry of today. Thousands of fishermen make a living off the surrounding waters, bringing in an assortment of fish, including mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna, striped bass and a variety of shellfish. Some of the most popular seafood dishes on the Crystal Coast are shrimp burgers (fried shrimp on a bun with coleslaw and sauce), clam chowder and anything made out of crab. Perhaps the most famous way to serve crabmeat is in the form of crab cakes. Every chef has their own recipe, and of course every chef claims that their recipe is “the best there is,” although few are willing to share the secret ingredient. Hard shell crabs are commonly found on restaurant menus served steamed and plated with small mallets to crack open the shells and pick out the sweet meat. From the first full moon in May until late summer, soft shell crabs are found in eateries prepared fried, broiled or sautéed. The fresh catch of the day is also served in an endless amount of ways—steamed, fried, blackened or “Calabash-style,” which means lightly breaded in seasoned cornmeal.
Area chefs use their creative license to create delicious dishes you could never dream up on your own, combining seafood and fresh ingredients from local farms. However, the most famous dish in the Tar Heel state has to be Carolina barbecue. First, understand that the word “barbecue” and the word “grilling” are not synonymous, and in this neck of the woods, barbecue means pork; not chicken or beef. Carolina barbecue is a combination of pork, heat and smoke that makes for a tender, rich, succulent meat that is chopped and usually paired with a thin vinegar sauce. There are some varieties in the way barbecue is cooked, but nobody is more proud of their barbecue than North Carolinians. You’ll be delighted by the dining options on the Crystal Coast, from casual family restaurants to upscale eateries. But no matter where you eat, rest assured you’ll get a side of that good old-fashioned Southern charm with every meal. Farm-Fresh Faire Take a taste of the local harvest sprouting up throughout the Crystal Coast by visiting one of the region’s farmers markets. While the big season for farmers’ markets lies between the beginning of May and Labor Day, a few of the more well-known farmers’ markets are open all year-round and allow you to sample all sorts of local treats that burst onto the scene well after summertime.

our adventure begins with a one-hour scenic tour as we cruise from Downtown Morehead City out into Bogue Sound and around the waterways of Morehead City and Atlantic Beach back to Sugarloaf Island, a 47-acre uninhabited island. Upon arriving to the sandy shore of the island, go off and explore, walk the nature trails, and do some shelling. This 75-foot super cruiser combines relaxing scenic tours with lunches, dinners and Sunday morning brunch. The Crystal Coast Lady offers a fully enclosed upper deck, a giant bow that gives passengers a chance to step out over the water, a kids “steering station” and can accommodate up to 150 people. While cruise options will also be offered that don’t provide full meals, such as fishing trips, dolphin & wild horse sightseeing, there will be a snack bar on board.
