INSIDE
LETTER
FALL/WINTER 2017-18
from the EDITOR
When we set out on our journey into adulthood (a.k.a. the real world), I think many of us can agree there is a certain order of events we expect: start career, meet someone, get married, have kids, grow old together, retire, sit in a rocking chair somewhere telling stories about “back in the day.” But sometimes things happen out of order. Sometimes little bundles of joy arrive when we aren’t quite expecting them. Sometimes marriages and relationships don’t work out. Sometimes people change. I hadn’t planned on marrying a man with children but on October 18, 2014, I did just that. Upon saying “I do,” I became a wife and a stepmom to two girls. While we had always been a family of four when we were together, on that day it was “official”—and it felt good. So you can understand why I felt a connection to our 2017 Bride of the Year Brittany Ennis Watson. Even though her plans changed, love was waiting for her on the other side. Read about her story, and the man who is stepping up to be a husband and father, on page 25. Also, flip through to see her modeling this year’s top dress fashions at one of Lynchburg’s best kept secrets, Old City Cemetery. Also inside, on pages 33-39, you will find our 1st Annual Best Of Bridal Picks. From venues to flowers to dresses and beyond, you can see who brides recommend in 22 wedding-related categories. We hope this resource will help you find the best vendors possible for your big day. We also tried to answer some other questions: Makeup—should you go trendy or stay classic? Videography—what should you expect? After the wedding—how do you manage some of the top stressors for newlyweds? I wish you the best of luck with your wedding planning. And remember, if your plans change (venue is booked, budget shrinks, etc.), don’t sweat it. Brittany and I can tell you, sometimes when plans change, you get an even better end result!

PLAN AN ALTERNATIVE

magine: A night huddled over a stove top, pots simmering with pasta sauces and an oven crisping up
freshly made bread. Or imagine holding a glass of your favorite wine in one hand and a paintbrush in another. Or even imagine your adrenaline pumping as you hide behind walls and barriers with a paintball gun, waiting for your next target. Then imagine doing all of this with your favorite girls and the members of your bridal party. Not quite what you pictured for your bridal shower? Today’s brides are throwing tradition to the wind, not only when it comes to the big day itself but also the events leading up to their vows. Read on for a few alternative bridal shower ideas that may have you rethinking the punch and presents formula.

BRIDAL SHOWERS
COOKING PARTY Whether you gather your girls to decorate cupcakes or you attend a class to learn how to make pizza or your favorite dish, cooking parties are an incredible and interactive way to enjoy a day with your closest girlfriends, while avoiding the bridal shower games.
PAINT NIGHT Whether it’s a paint-andsip or a paint-and-pints night (depending on whether the ladies in your life prefer wine or beer), you and your friends will love learning together, laughing over some artistic mishaps and enjoying a casual night over your favorite drink. You can even bring the party to you! Forest favorite, Sip and Spatter, recently went mobile— allowing them to bring the painting party to brides everywhere. Simply choose a location— whether it be a restaurant, meeting hall or someone’s home—and they’ll bring the goods to you for an even more customized and memorable bridal shower.
PAINT BALL A paint ball day is a different kind of paint night for the more adventurous bride. After all, who said sports days were only reserved for the groom and groomsmen? Local nonprofit, Masters Inn, offers paintball packages for the day for up to 20 people. Just be sure to include a photographer in your party, because you’ll want to relive your winning shot over and over (and your future husband will probably be pretty impressed, too).
consider spending a day giving instead of getting for your bridal shower. Organize your group of girls and contact a local nonprofit or association and ask how you can volunteer your time. Organizations like the Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity, Lynchburg Daily Bread or even Lynchburg Parks and Recreation are always looking for volunteers who are ready and willing to pitch in and help.
TRADITION MEETS NON-TRADITION If you can’t quite come to terms with a completely untraditional
OUTDOOR RECREATION If you’re looking to keep your bridal shower on the inexpensive side (which your bridal party will appreciate), consider a group hike or outdoor activity. Lynchburg is considered to be a top destination for outdoor recreation in Virginia, and for good reason. Take advantage of the Appalachian Trail, kayak or canoe on the James River, or ski and snowboard just an hour away in Wintergreen. Whatever the skill or fitness level of your bridal party, Lynchburg offers outdoor recreation to match. Plus, it will be nice to unplug in nature for a little while before the flurry of wedding events begin.
bridal shower (or if you can’t quite imagine grandma shooting paint ball), consider mixing tradition with non-tradition by hosting a sprinkle shower or a couple’s shower. A sprinkle shower is a low-key version of a traditional bridal shower. Usually held at a restaurant, tearoom or someone’s home, a sprinkle shower encourages guests to simply sprinkle the bride with gifts versus a large overhaul of the bridal registry. Sprinkle showers give brides the opportunity to spend quality, relaxed time with the women in their life, without adding pressure to them to bring impressive gifts. On the other hand, couple’s showers are gaining incredible popularity. Often still structured like a traditional bridal shower—with

MAKEUP TRENDS
Trendy vs.
TIMELESS You don’t have to choose! A
beautiful, flawless face has always been at the top of the list for most brides’ wedding day makeup requests. But in our current Pinterest-obsessed era, it’s easy for brides to get
caught up in all of the current makeup trends (that can come and go fairly quickly). “I recommend that brides steer clear of anything that will seriously date their wedding photos. You will have your pictures forever, and no one wants to look back and regret this year’s version of ’80s blue eyeshadow,” said Chantay Silido, owner and lead artist of In Your Face Makeup Art. The good news is—you don’t have to choose! Just as runway clothing trends can be modified for everyday wear, trendy makeup can be reimagined and incorporated into your wedding makeup wish list. We asked Chantay to show us how it can be done in three different looks.
Romantic TRENDS: Pink Eyeshadow and Monochromatic Makeup
“I combined these two trends and used shades of pink for eyes, cheeks, and lips.” CENTRAL VIRGINIA BRIDAL GUIDE |
Fall/Winter 2017-18
MAKEUP TRENDS
13
Vintage TRENDS: Red Lips, Revival Of ’90s Graphic Eyeliner, Glowy Highlighter
“I kept the cheek and eye colors neutral to let the focus stay on the lips and eyeliner.”
Dramatic TRENDS: Bold Matte Lips and Glitter
“I chose a deep berry matte lip to contrast with the icy shimmer of the silver eyeshadow. Eyeshadow with a shimmery finish is an elegant way to incorporate the ‘glitter’ trend without looking juvenile.” In all three looks, Chantay kept with the current mainstream (but modified to be weddingfriendly) trends of a natural, fuller brow and subtle highlight and contour of the cheekbones. with the inherent magic of a wedding, wedding videos can be especially meaningful—but the cost of hiring a wedding videographer may have you stuck between “must-have” and “maybe.” If you’re unsure about this decision, consider the following expert information from top-rated local videographers from DeVries Productions and SoloKoo Wedding Films to determine if wedding videography is a good fit for your big day.
Outdoor and natural light weddings set during warmer months are ideal for videography. Although it is possible to hire a videographer for just about any venue during any season, outdoor weddings or indoor weddings with ample natural light held during warmer months tend to yield the best results. “Our wedding season typically runs from April to December,”
Videographers recommend hiring a photographer as well. Both Koo and the DeVries recommend hiring a professional photographer in addition to a videographer to fully document your wedding. “Our couples usually do have both photo and video, and I think both are equally important,” Koo says. “I recommend having both because photos are beautiful keepsakes to decorate your house with or give to others as gifts, but videos capture everything in real time. A well-done video captures moments you may have missed on that day. You get to see and hear your vows, reception speeches, dances, and more for years and years to come.”
Wedding videos are easy and fun to share. Once you receive your wedding video, you will likely be very excited

special moments you may not have considered. For Koo, capturing the unique personality of the couple and general mood of the day are very important. “We are always open to suggestions from couples and we even send out a questionnaire before the wedding inquiring about any specific details or moments that are really important to them so we can be sure not to miss those. If they have any suggestions as far as song selections, we are more than happy to incorporate that as well,” he says. “We believe the most important thing that happens on a couple’s wedding day is their commitment to each it a point to always include those vows in each wedding ALINA THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY

CONSIDER AN ELECTRONIC RSVP SYSTEM With all the moving parts of wedding planning, the last thing you need to worry about is keeping track of dozens of RSVP cards being sent through the mail. There are a variety of websites that can help you organize your guest list so everything is in one place. Choosing to forgo paper RSVP cards and using an electronic system instead will make managing your guest list a breeze and expedite the wait time for people’s responses. (Younger wedding guests are more likely to use email than snail mail these days.) You’ll be especially glad you did this when it comes to writing thank you cards and everyone’s information is already stored in one place.
ENGAGE GUESTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA Hashtags and geofilters are great ways to engage your guests on social media. Coming up with a fun, customized hashtag for your guests to use when they post photos from your wedding makes it easy to look back on the fun everyone had. Just be sure your guests know how to use the hashtag, as Brandi recommends, by creating a decorative sign, placing instructions in a common area, or having your DJ announce it. Geofilters, creative overlays used on social media apps like Snapchat and Instagram, are another creative way to get guests to post stories from your wedding.
BRING YOUR WEDDING CAKE TO LIFE Some companies are beginning to offer 3D mapping services where you can project graphics onto your wedding cake, giving the perception your cake is displaying whatever is being projected. From virtual frosting designs to fireworks, Jon Daggett, owner of Castle Event Lighting, said the possibilities are endless when it comes to designing the cake projection a couple wants. This is a great way to display bride and groom photos in a creative way!
Coming up with a fun, customized hashtag for your guests to use when they post photos from your wedding makes it easy to look back on the fun everyone had.
INVEST IN DRONE PHOTOGRAPHY/ VIDEOGRAPHY Many photographers now offer packages that include the creation of a video from the wedding, or you can seek out a separate videographer as well. (Read more about this on page 14.) From behind the scenes footage of the bridal party getting ready to your walk down the aisle, you can look back and see your big day all over again. “The day goes by so fast that the bride and groom don’t really see it as others see it on the actual wedding day,” said Linda Hall, co-owner of Love Is In The Air Events. Taking it a step further, some photographers, such as Sam Stroud Photography, use drones to get creative shots of the bride and groom. If you crave unique photos like this, drone photography might be for you. From planning to post-wedding memories, technology can do a lot to make your wedding experience easier and your wedding celebration more enjoyable. Video chat your planner on your lunch break, make your registry from bed on a Saturday morning, and start brainstorming your #CoupleHashtag now, and watch your wedding unfold flawlessly later.

The outdoor chapel is the perfect locale for a memorable, lakefront ceremony, while the surrounding 350 acre landscape creates a stunning backdrop for wedding photos that will capture and preserve your very special day. This rustic and intimate setting provides tranquility paired with activity, and is convenient to many of Virginia’s best-known and most visited attractions. A large selection of professional catering services make the Hammersley Center the ideal place to host your reception, and the comfortable, lodge-style accommodations offer the ultimate opportunity for two families to blend into one with an authentic wedding retreat. For bride Faith Payne and her husband, having a place their families could come together
and truly bond was essential in choosing a venue. “We had family traveling from all over the country, so it was important to us that we provided more than just one event that lasted only a few hours. The site offered a wide range of fun activities that were enjoyed by family members of all ages. It was more than just a wedding…it was an experience, one we will treasure for the rest of our lives”; said the new Mrs. Payne. The bride and groom’s love of the outdoors, coupled with their relaxed personal style, made the Hammersley Center the ideal location for the wedding of their dreams. “Their professional team was very attentive in fulfilling our needs, making the entire experience stress-free, while still allowing the freedom to add our individual flair,” stated Payne. At the Hammersley Center, the promise is an effortless experience along with unparalleled attention to detail, creating an inviting atmosphere where dreams for a distinctive, unforgettable wedding come true. The Hammersley Center…where the venue is as unique as your love story.

1. A good start. Never underestimate a goodie bag. Before your rehearsal, welcome your wedding party and family members with goodie bags including snacks, bottled water, fruit, a list of area attractions, important phone numbers and a handwritten note thanking them for being a part of your special day.
2. Schedule on point. Print an agenda of your wedding events—the time and location for every activity including the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, hair and make-up appointments, the wedding ceremony, pictures, reception and clean up. This little detail will make your guests feel welcome and eliminate confusion. Find upcycled antique mirrors and stylish chalkboard signs from local vendors like Vintage and Scripted.

7. Party of 2…or more. If you or your sweetheart have children, involve them in your ceremony. Invite them to join you during the unity symbol. Present them with a token like an engraved necklace when you exchange rings. You’re not just becoming husband and wife— you’re becoming a family, and your children will remember this special day forever.
8. Relaxation station. Relaxed seating areas create an atmosphere for guests to enjoy your venue throughout the day. “Spread out cocktail stations for refreshment around the grounds,” said Foxie Morgan, owner at Pharsalia, a local historic estate founded in 1814. “Place firepits around the property for guests to warm up as the evening cools.”
9. Centerpieces with a twist. Put your own twist on traditional centerpieces by trading blossomed flowers for branches embellished with ornaments, fairy lights or beading. Add a personal touch around the base, like your favorite books or framed photos of your adventures together.

At the end of the song, the remaining couple has been married the longest, and all of the guests give them a round of applause.

Perfect For Each Other A love story that started as a friendship and continues as a blended family By Jennifer Redmond
f t h o e e Y d i r ear B BRITTANY ENNIS WATSON at Old City Cemetery
The Love Story
Colbie Calliat’s lyrics, “If you just realize what I just realized, then we’d be perfect
for each other, and we’ll never find another,” capture the slow transition of friends who fall in love without realizing it right
away. And for Brittany Ennis Watson and her husband Zac, this was how things progressed for them.

“
M
oving from our previous relationships, we were both not wanting a relationship at first,” Brittany says. “So it came about so slowly— talking as friends for hours on the phone.”
Zac’s work at the time kept him on the road doing conveyor installations all around the country. Plus, Brittany has always carried a full load between her work as a surgical tech and raising her two children, Kaleigh, 6, and Hunter, 2. While they knew each other casually in high school—they both grew up in Amherst—they were reconnected a few years later in 2016 through mutual friends. Brittany laughs describing their first “date,” saying it was a fun time out with friends, though she learned later that Zac hadn’t thought of it as much more going into the night. “He paid for everything, so I thought it was a date,” she explains. Early miscommunications aside, they started talking regularly after that, paving the way for a strong, foundational friendship. Brittany says while the distance certainly made things challenging for them, it also allowed her to “have some time to myself and ease into a new relationship,” a pace she appreciated after her first marriage had ended. As 2016 continued, they were able to meet up in different states—from Pennsylvania to Georgia—

in Appomattox—the couple wed on September 2, 2017, which is actually Zac’s birthday! Brittany says this didn’t faze him much though, describing him as someone who “goes out of his way to help anyone; he’s very funny—very sweet.”
As the end of the year approached, Brittany scheduled a family photo shoot, not knowing that Zac decided to capitalize on the opportunity to do a surprise proposal. “I was doing a photo with Hunter, and when we turned around, Zac was on one knee,” she says. “Kaleigh was on his other knee; I was totally surprised and said ‘yes’ right away. Kaleigh was giggling in all of the pictures!”
The couple selected a country chic look for their wedding and opted for an outside ceremony. Brittany appreciated that the spacious reception hall features a huge fireplace and has hardwood floors. Attendants and flowers all tied together with her chosen colors of blush pink and grey. Finally, Brittany was excited to have Kaleigh as her flower girl, wearing a blush pink, tulle princess gown, and Hunter with her, carrying a sign that read, “Ladies, I’m still single.”
While thoughts of a small destination wedding were tempting at first, Brittany says that the more she thought about it, she wanted their wedding to be a special event since “it’s the first time Zac is getting married, and it’s more special for his family.” Because of the availability at their chosen venue—Falling River Country Club
Since their engagement, Zac has started working locally at BWXT with Brittany’s father, making it much easier to spend time together. Following their honeymoon to the Bahamas, Brittany says they’re looking forward to continuing life as an official family of four.

The Photo Shoot
Brittany’s Bride of the Year photo shoot brought together a range of
talented local vendors at Old City Cemetery (OCC). If that seems like an unlikely venue, think again. “Once people actually visit [here], they see it is a beautiful, public garden teeming with life,” says Ted Delaney, Executive Director of OCC.

With 27 acres to explore, Delaney explains why they see photo shoots happening on a near daily basis: “At every turn there are stunning backdrops…including both plant features, like roses and flowering shrubs, and structures, like a domed gazebo and oldfashioned tree swing.” They also offer the option for “smaller, more intimate ceremonies” with their historic chapel, train station, lotus pond and shrub garden. Delaney adds, “Our wedding fees are very reasonable and competitive. Plus, with our new Comfort House, we can now offer restroom and catering facilities for weddings.” Against this historic and natural setting, Brittany was styled in four dresses, the first being her own that she described as a “ball gown style with a lot of tulle,” and the other three provided by Ashley Grace Bridal. Owner Teresa Thomas, who named her bridal store after her own two daughters, selected some of their “most popular, new styles that give today’s brides what they are looking for—[they] want to look beautiful but also understand that they will be in a gown for hours, [so] it’s important to be comfortable.” Brittany modeled a variety of dresses from a fit and flare with lace to a “simple and chic” satin gown and finally to a sleeveless, “organza Jacquard ball gown.” “We understand that today’s bride is more budget conscious,” said Thomas. “We [chose] gowns that are excellent quality, unique styles and yet affordable.” While she explains that an A-line style will complement most body types, she also adds, “We encourage brides
29
to try on a variety of styles because often they end up choosing something totally different than they originally thought.” For Brittany’s makeup, Chantay Salido, owner and lead artist of In Your Face Makeup Art, decided to “create a classic, elegant look” for Brittany and did this by focusing on her eyes and creating a dramatic lip, even mixing two shades together to find the “perfect deep red,” which Brittany loved. “I really wanted to accentuate her pretty eyes,” Salido says, “So I blended light and dark shadows for a neutral smoky effect, added a set of wispy false lashes and softly penciled in a defined brow.” Salido believes a trial run “is the best opportunity to discuss style, colors, etc. and to see it all come together exactly as it will be…[plus] it helps the wedding day go smoothly, and everyone can be more relaxed when there’s no guesswork on such an important day!” Brittany’s hair was styled by Jessica Comiskey Hair Design with a focus on “soft elegance” while also prioritizing a neutral and versatile look.

BRIDE OF THE YEAR “I wanted to focus on something simple that would be flexible with many different dresses,” Comiskey says. “The weather made me think it needed to be up so that it would not get sweaty on her shoulders and then the curl fall out.” When discussing various styles with brides, Comiskey stresses the importance of paying attention to the weather. Down and curly can work when a “bride knows her hair and knows how it responds in the climate of her wedding day,” Comiskey explains. “Updos are perfect for that unruly hair that just needs to stay put and look great for hours on end—and even survive the crazy dancing at the reception!” Brittany carried a bouquet from bloom by Doyle’s and was photographed by Laura Bryan Photography in early August.

TRANSITIONING
Happily Ever After?
With This Advice, Definitely
EARLY MAE PHOTOGRGARPAHPHY
By Jennifer Redmond
W
e all know the classic rhyme: “First comes love, then comes marriage…” but rather than follow that with “then comes baby in the baby carriage,” it would be more realistic (albeit less of an actual rhyme) to say, “Then comes real life with the opposite sex!” Much like Monica’s frantic realization to her best gal pals on “Friends”—“I have to live with a booooyyyy!”—the realities of daily life with your significant other may seem a tad overwhelming. While engagement and the early days of marriage are unlike any other stage of life, ushering in great moments and memories you’ll keep forever, they also bring their fair share of stressors; almost everything in your life is affected in one way or another by this huge transition. So, how can you be prepared? What should you expect? Here we asked three local experts to share their best advice so you have an advantage to creating a “happily ever after” ending of your own.
CONFLICT WILL HAPPEN All of the professional counselors we interviewed agreed: conflict is inevitable. It’s best to acknowledge that up front so you can be prepared to address it successfully. Elizabeth M. Jenkins, L.C.S.W., owner and partner at James River Counseling Center, Inc., recommends “putting things into three categories: what I really need to have; what I can negotiate; and what really doesn’t matter.” By establishing an order of priority, you will be able to move past small issues— “Should the toilet paper roll face up or down?” for instance— and instead focus your collective efforts on more pressing issues such as what to prioritize in your family budget. Couples should also understand what often leads to conflict, namely, is the fact that you are each unique individuals!
“You have to develop a comfort level with the other person thinking differently than you do [and] that you see the world differently,” Chuck Rodgers, founder of the Wyndhurst Counseling Center and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, explains. Once you acknowledge those differences, then seek to truly understand the other person’s perspective. “After 100 percent understanding is achieved by both people, then true brainstorming can begin … and couples can move forward,” Rodgers says. Also remember that conflict will always be present to some degree. “Not all conflicts can be resolved, but they can be managed,” Larry Compter, executive director of Compass Marriage & Relationship Services, points out. “Remember, it’s not the problems you face, but how you face the problems, that will make the difference in your marriage.” He also recommends premarital counseling for the purpose of learning and practicing the skills of effective communication and conflict management.

TRANSITIONING
FAMILY MATTERS Not long after your wedding the holidays will come along, and with them, an understandable mix of nostalgia and some confusion at the realization that you’re now making new traditions of your own.
The experts agree that when it comes to extended family, and the holidays especially, couples have a lot to discuss.
It’s a lesson I personally learned the hard way during our first Thanksgiving as a married couple. My husband was spending the holiday apart from his family for the very first time, and as a result, was feeling more emotional than he expected. Rather than asking how I could make the transition easier for him, I casually dismissed his suggested dessert request, only to find out later—and much to my dismay—that it was his favorite and one his Grandmom always made with him in mind. I, for one, wish I had taken the time to really listen before the holiday arrived! The experts agree that when it comes to extended family, and the holidays especially, couples have a lot to discuss.
“It is very exciting but also scary to let go of some of your traditions from the past,” Rodgers says. He recommends sharing specifically how each of you celebrated holidays in the past, even to the smallest details like opening one gift on Christmas Eve or always reading Luke 2 on
Christmas morning. Then, “talk about how you would like to see it for your new family together,” Rodgers says.
Jenkins echoes this advice, saying, “Couples need to be sure they discuss expectations” and this includes where you spend the holidays in addition to how. She also recommends choosing a “time to talk when you are both rested and emotionally ready to talk; stick to the topic…be respectful, and take a break if you need to.” In addition to the holidays, extended family members may also try to insert their own opinions or expectations on you as individuals or as a couple. Compter has two recommendations for successfully navigating this topic. “One, be agreed. Make sure the two of you are on the same page….Two, blood talks to blood…this [approach] works because each of you has a history with your own family that the other will never have.”
GIVE YOURSELVES SOME SPACE While the early days of marriage are definitely filled with “euphoric and wonderful” emotions according to Rodgers, they are also laying the foundation for your life together from that point forward. So don’t shy away from maintaining some of your own interests and hobbies,
CENTRAL VIRGINIA BRIDAL GUIDE |
Fall/Winter 2017-18
TRANSITIONING otherwise you may experience some sense of loss because “individuals have different needs for togetherness and individual time,” Jenkins says.
Compter says that “communication is key to managing this balance; talk about what your needs are, and how much time or space you want, and when is the best time to do it.” Jenkins explains that there is “no right or wrong answer [and] each couple has to navigate this issue together.” All of the counselors agree that prioritizing your marriage in the midst of balancing your individual interests is critical. “I find that as the needs of the couple are met, that each spouse is very giving to the other person to have individual needs met,” Rodgers says. He encourages couples to establish what are known as “rituals of connection” on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly cycle. Doing so builds quality time into your schedules, and according to Rodgers, research shows that it promotes satisfying and enduring marriages. Compter recommends planning a regular date night to ensure you have quality time together for some fun and good conversation. As you move forward into married life, keep in mind that real life happens, but it can be much sweeter together with some conscious effort and preparation!

FINANCES
You’re Married ! Now what? Three steps couples should take to get their newly-united financial house in order.
N
o one likes to talk about money, but newlyweds have a unique opportunity to start things out on the right foot. We’ve all read the statistics that show couples who have financial disagreements are more likely to end up in a not-sohappy place. What can new couples do to prevent that type of marital discord? Let’s examine three important practices:
1. COMMUNICATE.
There’s simply no substitute for clear communication. This holds true when it comes to your household finances as well. Sit down with your partner and have the money talk. What do each of you have? What do each of you owe? (Although, this should probably come up before the vows.) What do each of you make? And, lastly, what do each of you spend? Starting out with open and equal knowledge of your finances coming into the marriage can help avoid misunderstanding. That is, if you follow through to step two:
2. MAKE A PLAN.
If you’ve aired all of the financial laundry, then you both know where you’re starting. Next, come up with a plan to get from where you are to where you want to be. No, you don’t have to map out of rest of your lives, but you should know how you’re going to pay the bills, put food on the table, and tackle any preexisting debts. If you’re splitting responsibilities, then write them down and agree to them. Don’t worry! We’re not talking legal contracts! Get out a notepad and a pencil. Who’s going to do what? What purchase decisions will you make together, and which ones are you both okay making independently? After you take care of the here and now, talk about the future. What are your joint financial goals?
3. GO TOGETHER TO SEEK ADVICE.
How has marriage changed your tax situation? Whose retirement accounts should be maxed out? Do you need a will? Life insurance? These are all questions that may require an expert’s advice. Go together to an accountant, financial planner, attorney, and any other needed professional that can help meet your needs. Why go together? So that, again, you agree on your plan of action. It’s not uncommon for one spouse to be more financially savvy than the other. That’s okay, but it shouldn’t mean the other spouse is simply left in the dark and expected to follow orders. Going together to advisors helps both partners ask questions, understand the answers, and agree to the next steps they will take as a result of the advice they receive.
REPEAT Remember that communication, planning, and seeking sound advice are ongoing activities. Your life isn’t a one-and-done exercise, and finances are no exception. As new circumstances come up, whether they be a change in jobs, expecting a child, buying a home, or caring for an elderly parent, it will be important to routinely repeat these steps.

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS Confused about what happens when? Use the following guide to help plan the order of your ceremony and reception. CEREMONY
THE GROOM TAKES HIS PLACE
THE EXCHANGE OF VOWS
Every religion has their own established rituals, customs and traditions for wedding ceremonies. Also, your clergyman or officiant may also have specific rules and procedures to be followed when they officiate a wedding ceremony. So, when planning your ceremony, be sure to consult with your officiant every step of the way!
The officiant, ushers, best man and groom take their positions.
Traditional vows may be exchanged, or you may write your own personal vows to recite.
SEATING OF GUESTS Pre-ceremonial music as the ushers seat the guests. Music usually begins 15 minutes before the ceremony.
SEATING OF PARENTS After the guests are present and seated, the groom’s parents are escorted to their seats. The bride’s mother is the last to be seated The bride’s father is waiting with the bride.
ATTENDANTS’ PROCESSION The processional music for the bridesmaids, maid or matron of honor, flower girl and ring bearer begins as they are ready to march down the aisle.
BRIDAL PROCESSION Following the attendants, the bride’s father offers the bride his left arm as they begin down the aisle. Music is played and the guests rise in honor of the bride following the cue of the bride’s mother.
GIVING AWAY OF THE BRIDE/CHARGE TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM Message, explanation of marriage or Scripture reading.
MUSIC WITH CEREMONY Music is played during the candlelighting and other nonverbal portions of the ceremony.
THE RING EXCHANGE Be sure to know where your rings are.
THE KISS! THE INTRODUCTION At the end of the ceremony, the officiant may introduce the newlyweds to the guests as the new Mr. and Mrs.
THE RECESSIONAL The bride and groom lead the bridal party back down the aisle.

Creating a “shot list” has little to do with adult beverages when it comes to your wedding. Arguably, one of the most important aspects of your big day is what will last after it is over—your vows, love, and hopefully, your photos! While more professional photographers understand what is essential to capture, here is a simple list to add to or subtract from. Give your personalized list to your photographer so he or she will know which moments you want to remember for a lifetime.
