From the sophisticated storefronts of Rehoboth to the laid-back boardwalk in Bethany Beach, this oceanfront area of southern Delaware truly has something for everybody. Explore historic villages, escape into the coastal forest for hiking and biking, or just find a spot on the sandy shores and relax the day away listening to the waves roll in. Of course, one of the most popular activities here is shopping, which has the distinction of being sales tax-free. Meander down the sidewalks of our quaint towns, stopping to browse for antiques, designer clothes, unique gifts, oneof-a-kind art and much, much more. Or head to our famous outlet malls, where good deals come standard. From the southeastern-most tip of Fenwick Island to the point of Cape Henlopen State Park, the main attraction is the ocean. But as you venture inland, you will find museums, cultural events and festivals throughout the year plus exciting outdoor adventures. Explore inland bays on a kayak or sailboat, or try your hand at windsurfing or skim boarding on the Atlantic Ocean. An artistic and eclectic community, this region is rich in cultural and arts organizations. Art galleries, symphony orchestras and theaters come together to make the Delaware Beaches more than your average beach community. There is a wealth of exciting attractions, entertainment and nightlife, all with the beautiful sandy beaches as a backdrop. All this, complemented by an eclectic restaurant scene full of intimate eateries and gourmet restaurants, and you have one of the mid-Atlantic’s favorite year-round destinations. We invite you to take in all this region has to offer, from the sun-soaked beaches to the bustling sidewalks. On the next few pages, you’ll find all the best places to eat, play, stay and shop in the Delaware Beaches.

or some kids, a plastic bucket, shovel and plot of sand are all they need for a day’s worth of entertainment. From swimming to building a sandcastle, shell searching to just plain goofing around, family fun on the beach is what makes a vacation to the Delaware Beaches so memorable.
This oceanfront area of southern Delaware truly has something for everybody. Laze on the sand, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy being together. Don’t forget to bring the four-legged member of the family on vacation. Some areas of the beach are part of the very few in the nation that permit dogs on the beach year-round to enjoy a leisurely walk on a leash or a thrilling game of catch in the surf. Please be sure to check local regulations. Beyond the beach, you’ll also find numerous activities to keep the whole family amused, from the five-year-old balls of energy to those hard-to-please teenagers. With all the available options, coming up with something to do is the easy part. Deciding which order to do them in can be tricky, so take turns enjoying all of the activities together as one happy group, and everyone will get a turn!

We Supply Everything You Need To Play!
The Delaware shoreline truly has something for everyone!
Play All Day Or Play All Night Under The Lights!
Summertime welcomes a host of water activities, including parasailing, boating adventures, cruises and more. For the active family, there are hundreds of ways to enjoy the bays, inlets and ocean that encircle these beautiful coastal communities. Whether you want to cool off from a hot day in the sun, try to reel in some dinner or just enjoy a leisurely time surrounded by our beautiful blue waters, you’re sure to find an activity the whole family will enjoy. Perhaps you’re up for trying a new sport. Kite boarding and wind surfing are two water sports that have grown in popularity and are a blast to begin learning together as a family. Who knows—this newfound sport could become a family tradition, and you’ll enjoy getting better at it year after year. Wave runners are simply a blast to ride—speed across the water and over waves as the water sprays up behind you. Rent one that can fit the whole family or split up to explore the area. Kids and adults alike will enjoy spotting dolphins in the surf! Pontoons, jet boats, deck boats, cruisers, skiffs—the possibilities are endless. Just choose your craft and set out on your own voyage in the surrounding waters. Pontoons and deck boats are great for families. Enjoy an afternoon cruising, swimming, snacking and sunning. Or if you’re craving some speed, rent a speedboat or cruiser. Some companies even offer free water skis, tubes and wakeboard rentals, so you can enjoy a full day of water sports. Continued On Page 12

BETHANY BEACH &Quiet The FENWICK ISLAND Resorts W
ith the bustling Ocean City to the south and the serene Delaware Seashore State Park to the north, the towns of Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are sandwiched between two extremes. Roller coasters and arcades buzz to the south, while birds and the occasional dolphin set the scene up north. These two beach communities, known as the “quiet resorts,” seem to have adjusted to their opposing neighbors quite well, combining the excitement and amenities of the boardwalk with the beauty and serenity of nature. Today, the area is known as an ideal retreat for families and the perfect environment for a laid-back beach getaway. The community of Bethany Beach actually began as a church retreat, and while vacationers of all lifestyles fill the many condos and homes today, it still echoes the tradition of those seeking a quiet seaside vacation. With loads of attractions just a short drive away, it is an ideal location for those who crave the serenity of the beach but also want quick access to more high-intensity fun and attractions.

The atmosphere in Bethany is decidedly laid-back—folks spend the day on the beach, occasionally stopping in at area shops, restaurants and cafes to visit with friends, peruse the merchandise or fill up until the next meal. A short half-mile boardwalk is also a great place to stroll and enjoy the ocean views; stop in the few shops, restaurants and activities that line the way. Regular concerts at the boardwalk bandstand provide entertainment during the summer months. Though Bethany Beach definitely has that smalltown atmosphere, it also has all the modern amenities and services you could ask for such as great shopping, restaurants and plenty of things to do. The same can be said of Fenwick Island, which lies right on the Delaware-Maryland state line, just north of Ocean City. Still quiet and laid-back, Fenwick offers some of the cleanest beaches in the region. One of the most popular attractions in Fenwick is the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, an 89-foot lighthouse built in 1858. The towering white beacon is open for tours, although visitors are prohibited from climbing the tower.

REHOBOTH & DEWEY BEACH A
n old-fashioned beach destination with a modern flair, Rehoboth Beach is one of the mid-Atlantic’s most popular beach towns. The town has garnered the nickname, “The Nation’s Summer Capital,” but Rehoboth is truly a year-round destination with quality entertainment, dining, shopping and recreation. The Rehoboth boardwalk area is about a mile long and includes a small amusement park, some arcades, restaurants, shops and many places to grab an afternoon snack. On summer weekends, there are frequently festivals, art shows and concerts right on the boardwalk. Of course, relaxing in the rays is one of the main reasons people come to Rehoboth. The beaches are clean and spacious enough for folks to spread out and enjoy a little time in the sun. The ocean is perfect for swimming, surfing or just leisurely floating in the waves. At night, the town continues to sizzle, with nightly concerts at the oceanfront, popular downtown hotspots and bars to mingle with friends. Many also head to nearby Dewey Beach for a night out on the town. Dewey, a more casual and smaller version of Rehoboth, features many popular bars and clubs that attract
crowds into the wee hours. A trolley connects to the two towns in the summer. In both Rehoboth and Dewey Beach, there are also loads of recreational activities. Participate in dolphin watching or a nature cruise, rent a boat and explore on your own, or take a few sailing lessons on the Rehoboth or Delaware Bays. Canoe and kayak outings led by nature experts are both informative and fun. Or earn your dinner by surf fishing, deep-sea fishing, clamming or crabbing. Biking is a popular way to get around Rehoboth and Dewey, especially considering the summer traffic. Rent a bike and explore each town, or enjoy an early morning ride on the boardwalk. Bike rental companies may suggest longer trails in the area or a scenic ride through one of the many state parks. Both Rehoboth and Dewey Beach offer a world-class beach getaway that is both eclectic and old-fashioned. From the boardwalk to the boutiques, these two towns are full of excitement year round. ummon your inner Jack Nicklaus and tee off at one of the many first-rate courses that surround the Delaware Beaches. There are more than a dozen public courses in the area, each with a distinctive layout and atmosphere. From coastal marshes to farmland and
forests, the Delmarva Peninsula’s varying terrain creates a wonderful canvas for any golf architect. Famous course designers have lent their talents molding this seaside landscape into stunning fairways and greens, creating championship courses and many memorable holes.
Nature definitely defines Southern Delaware and Maryland golf. There are many fairways framed by towering pines, coastal wetlands, lakes, rivers and streams. Don’t be surprised if you are joined by herons, deer and other wildlife, even just a few miles away from the bustling beaches. The natural beauty of this area shines through at all area courses, providing a serene environment for total relaxation. But don’t get too relaxed. There are definitely some challenging holes on area courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at the nearby courses in Delaware and Maryland. In order to be ready to tackle that Par 3 or fish your ball out of a fresh water wetland, you need to have the proper attire and equipment. Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the course by stopping in a pro shop to find all your favorite brands of golf clothing. If you left your clubs at home, many courses offer club rentals, or you can pick up some new ones at a pro shop if you’re in the market. With help from the friendly staff and the great selections of golfing equipment, rest assured that you’ll be the most perfected golfer on the course—and the best dressed as well. Continued On Page 24

hopping takes on many forms in Southern Delaware, from the antique stores in Lewes to the eclectic boutiques in downtown Rehoboth. People come from all over to meander down the sidewalks of our quaint towns, stopping to browse for furniture, designer clothes, unique gifts, one-of-a-kind art and more. Of course, they also come to avoid paying extra for their goods—Delaware is sales tax-free and proud of it. One of the main shopping areas is downtown Rehoboth, which features a diverse array of boutiques and small shops with unique finds and gifts. Browse through local art galleries for a new piece to your collection, or stop by an art supply shop to gather all the supplies needed to create your own masterpiece. The stores in Rehoboth will even provide everything you need to have a perfect vacation. Biking is a popular beach hobby, and there are enough bike shops for you to find that sassy beach cruiser or rugged mountain bike you’ve been dreaming of. There are also places to rent beach items such as lounge chairs and other necessities, so if you’ve left something at home, there’s no need to worry—we’ve got you covered just like a beach umbrella. The fashionable district is full of charming and sophisticated stores selling everything from home décor to beauty products. Browse through jewelry stores, chic clothing boutiques, quaint gift stores and art galleries to rival any major city. It’s no wonder politicians and celebrities have been coming to Rehoboth for so many years. Even Oprah Winfrey has been spotted browsing the downtown shops and galleries. Continued On Page 26

DINING ON THE BEACH AND BEYOND
Area Restaurants Provide Delectable Treasures from the Land and Ocean as well as Eclectic Fusions of Original Favorites
rom chef-owned eateries to dockside cafes, dining in southern Delaware is truly a culinary adventure. Dine alfresco next to crashing waves, or kick back dockside and enjoy a tropical happy hour cocktail as the sun melts away. There are dozens of restaurants on the beach areas and beyond that provide all the elements of an unforgettable dining experience. From Rehoboth Beach to Fenwick Island, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants, from family-owned eateries preparing locally-sourced favorites to chef-owned and operated bistros inventing uniquely appetizing menus. The variety seen on menus and the dedication to providing fresh and exclusive dishes ensure a memorable dining experience for visitors.
What most local restaurants have in common is a focus on local flavors, such as the famous Chesapeake blue crabs available April through December. You’ll see these popular seafood staples prepared different ways from battered and fried to steamed and served with a piping hot bowl of melted butter. Sometimes chefs will use the sweet, succulent chunks of meat from blue crabs to form perfectly shaped crab cakes, often prepared with little filler and topped with spicy remoulade or sweet tartar sauce. Other seafood favorites found along the Delaware Beaches are deliciously moist rockfish, tasty tautog and flaky and delicate flounder available at different times throughout the year. If you familiarize yourself with the types of seafood available in the region during specific seasons, you’ll benefit by getting the freshest, tastiest seafood, and you’ll be benefiting the local harvesters in the area who care about the waterways, thus preserving a tradition and way of life. Fresh veggies from the many farms on the Delmarva Peninsula are paired with the fresh catches for a locally sourced meal you’re sure to love. Delaware has 2 ½ counties on the Peninsula—Kent and Sussex—making up nearly 80% of the state’s land, and fresh veggies can be found here year-round. Springtime brings favorites such as asparagus, parsnips and different types of leafy, green lettuces. The abundance of summer’s bounty provides juicy tomatoes, red raspberries, sweet peaches and various varieties of squash. Restaurant menus are still filled with local options during the fall and winter with items including pumpkins, winter squash, turnips, leeks, Brussels sprouts and beets. Look for these items prepared any number of creative ways at some of the fabulous restaurants along the Delaware Beaches. Rehoboth Beach has been attracting loads of media attention as area restaurants have expanded beyond the typical beach resort establishments to creative and gourmet eateries. You’ll still find the classic mom-and-pop diners, with favorites in beach food, seafood dishes and a unique atmosphere. Added to the mix are cosmopolitan eateries with fusion cuisine, international restaurants and chef-owned eateries with changing menus using the best of local flavors. The farm-to-table—or in some cases—the tide-to-table movement is taking over the mindset of many area chefs as the need for building community, not to mention, obtaining great tasting food, becomes an obvious factor in owning a restaurant. After dinner, the town continues to sizzle with nightly concerts by the beach and popular downtown hotspots. Many also head to nearby Dewey Beach for a night out on the town. Dewey, a more casual and smaller version of Rehoboth, features many popular restaurants and bars that attract crowds into the wee hours. Listed below are some of the favorite dining spots in Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Dewey Beach, Lewes and beyond, so try one—try all! We guarantee you’ll be back for seconds. Girls Just Want To Have Fun There’s no denying it—everyone needs a break once in a while to kick back and relax with the gals. Luckily, the beaches and towns of Southern Delaware are full of things to do for a fun-filled girls-only weekend. Spas The Delaware Beaches are a great place to unwind, relax and be pampered, so feel free to indulge yourself at one of the many spas in the area. One option is to make the spa your destination to spend the day. Some spas offer more than just a facial— you can find a variety of services that will pamper every part of you. Hydrate your skin after long hours in the sun with a moisturizing skin treatment or get sandal-ready feet with a spa pedicure. If you don’t want to dedicate your whole day to a spa, visit one of the many other spas that offer a variety of services at affordable prices, many that can be enjoyed in an hour or less. Shop ’til you drop The towns of the Delaware Beaches may be quaint but the numerous galleries and specialty shops can satiate even the most credit-hungry shoppers. Again added bonus to your buy, shopping in Delaware is always tax free! Find art from across the spectrum, unique crafts and antiques in Lewes or head to Rehoboth for boutiques and specialty shops that have everything from jewelry to home décor. Find even more variety, from beach necessities to local art, at the shops of Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach. There are plenty of shops that offer unique items and gifts for those loved ones at home. Girls Gone Wild Keep the ladies on their toes in a wild, adventure-filled weekend of windsurfing or skim boarding. There are all types of water excursions that can be customized to your group, ensuring a personal trip full of memories. For the less intense, try exploring the inland bays by kayak, taking a peaceful nature hike or just lathering on the sunscreen and spending the day on the beach. Dining Head into town to experience the signature flavors and dishes this coastal region has to offer. From chef-owned eateries to cafes overlooking the water, there are many culinary inspirations to try. Enjoy happy hour as the sun sets in the background, or feast on all the local seafood caught fresh that morning. c
