I
t was the February of 1985. I was in the process of selling and compiling my first edition of “TravelHost of Hampton Roads,” a weekly in-room guide for the region’s hotel guests. I was making sales calls one day, which led me to a small ad agency, Fischer-Pile Advertising, in the Hilton Village section of Newport News. That’s when I met Jim Pile. Jim bought in to this new TravelHost concept and signed The Inn Place on as an advertiser for the inaugural issue. As a partner in the agency, Jim was quick to inform me that he was also a professional photographer. I soon signed him to photograph images for clients’ ads. Now, 32 years, hundreds of thousands of miles and millions of photographs later, Jim is retiring. You learn a lot about a man over 32 years. Many of our long-time customers know Jim very well, as he has been taking their photos year-in and year-out. But, Jim continuously surprised me with something new that I was learning about him for the first time. Here are a few things you may or may not know: Jim has a master’s degree in Film from Syracuse University. He loves his Orangeman basketball, even when they are losing. His undergraduate degree in Philosophy is from Gettysburg College in 1967. Jim is an ordained Methodist minister with a Master of Divinity from Drew Seminary in New Jersey. He occasionally fills the pulpit when needed, teaches Sunday School, sings bass in the choir, helps with Vacation Bible School and acts in numerous dinner theaters raising money for missions. Out of college, Jim was a Peace Corp Volunteer. Since 2000, Jim has been volunteering at KIDZ’NGRIEF, an organization dedicated to helping kids deal with grief and the loss of loved ones. He facilitates the middle school group at Mikey’s Camp. Jim is an accomplished magician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Order of Merlin. Part of his job description at VistaGraphics has required that a new trick be performed at our annual Christmas party and often a bonus trick at our summer sales meeting. He is an accomplished musician on the guitar, drum, saxophone and most any wind instrument you can imagine. He plays piano and violin. He has written close to 100 songs and has his own songbook. Our Christmas parties sometimes take advantage of his musical abilities as well. Jim once confided in me that he had just taken up photography shortly before we met, learning on VistaGraphics’ dime as we depended on him more and more. Looking back, I believe he must have been a fast learner because he delievered beautiful work from the very beginning. On top of everything else, Jim is an accomplished family man with three daughters, two stepdaughters, one stepson, three “in-law” children and 10 grandchildren. They all refer to him as a “Renaissance Man.” I couldn’t agree more. Jim, we’re all going to miss you, and we wish you a happy, healthy and well-deserved retirement.

Fun Facts about the Delaware Beaches
RESERVE ONLINE FOR CONVENIENCE!
Alcohol was not sold in Bethany Beach until 1984. Boardwalk eatery, Warren’s Restaurant, was the first to obtain a liquor license.
Every summer, Dewey Beach’s population booms by 100%— from 300-or-so residents to nearly 30,000 visitors. Pirates thought twice about raiding Lewes in the late 17th century when a law was passed requiring citizens to own a musket and ammunition for protection. The Fenwick Island Lighthouse sits smack-dab on the eastern origin of the Mason-Dixon Line.

hile any day is a good day to go shopping, a rainy day is an even better opportunity to keep dry and delight in the many quaint and fun shops at the Delaware Beaches. Wander inside the eclectic souvenir stores and clothing boutiques complete with unique jewelry, whimsical toys and gifts. You can shop for unique treasures at a country store or buy some new clothes for an outing in Rehoboth! There is also a great shopping area in Town Center in Bethany, the Avenue in Rehoboth, in Fenwick and at the outlets of Rehoboth. Later, put your new wardrobe to good use when you enjoy a night on the town at any of the oceanfront’s exciting bars, or grab some nostalgic treats like candy or ice cream on the boardwalk. Strolling through the many one-of-a-kind boutiques is the perfect time to find a treasure for your loved ones back home. How about brushing up on your gaming skills? Battle with your teens (in a good way) at a local arcade. The loser owes the winner an ice cream cone! No matter who you are or where you’re visiting from, summer is the season for indoor putt-putt or a round of bowling! These no-sweat sports are great for all ages, giving everyone a competitive edge. Feed your appetite for knowledge with something new this vacation by exploring a nearby museum. Check out event schedules to see what programs and exhibits are showing, and spend some time enjoying the calm indoors. Feeling inspired? Visit one of the many nearby galleries and buy a new piece that will jazz up and liven your home. Or you can opt to spend some time creating your own art by painting your own pottery! When the sun is hiding it’s the perfect time to catch up with a new book that you found at a local bookshop. Sprawl out on your patio and delight in a relaxing read until the sun comes out.

LOW IMPACT TOURISM THAT HAS A HIGH IMPACT ON
YOUR VACATION Vacation is the one time you don’t want to feel guilty. Turn off the Fitbit. Don’t think about the calories. But what if doing something good for yourself, and the area your visiting, is actually fun?
Take a lesson from a professional and then explore our shorelines and salt marshes. yours on LIT experiences, you not only demonstrate your appreciation for our environment and help make our community stronger, you’ll feel healthier and make invaluable memories. All guilt free! Jenifer Adams-Mitchell Owner, Coastal Kayak
Our narrow strip of land surrounded by water abounds with low-impact tourism (LIT) opportunities. LIT is a lot like the “buy local” movement with an added environmental bonus—not putting anything into our eco-system or taking anything from it. That might sound limiting, but not here! Kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, sailing, kiteboarding, biking, hiking—more than enough activities to fill any vacation. Beginner kayakers and paddleboarders appreciate the shallow, warm waters of our inland bays. Take a lesson from a professional and then explore our shorelines and salt marshes. Or join a guided tour to experience places you might not find on your own and learn how the wildlife, marine life and habitat are all interconnected and make up our incredibly precious ecosystem. Afternoon sea breezes make our area perfect for sailing, kiteboarding and windsurfing. Biking is easy on our flat terrain and the Breakwater Junction Trail is a true gem that shouldn’t be missed. Hike the paths of Cape Henlopen to the north and Assateague Island to the south. And, of course, the Atlantic Ocean beckons the kid in us all to learn to surf or skimboard. Vacation time and dollars are both, unfortunately, finite. By choosing to spend

fter a day of shopping and indoor activities, there’s nothing like getting back in the water after a rainy day. The area has an abundance of activities available, all with an emphasis on safe, clean fun!
PARASAILING Soar above the Atlantic and see the best views of the beautiful Delaware shoreline from the air. One of the most popular beach activities, parasailing, can actually be done without even getting your feet wet. Watch dolphins and other wildlife and take in beautiful views of the inland bays and quaint seaside towns.
KAYAKING Take a ride down Delaware’s watery nature trails. Peaceful and equally pleasurable, make sure you take advantage of the many miles of bay front coastline aboard a kayak. There’s nothing quite like enjoying the cool breezes from your own waterfront view.

FISHING
JET-SKI
Fishing opportunities are a cinch in the Delaware Beaches. Charter a boat, head to one of the state parks or do some surf fishing. You’ll be excited to know that flounder, seabass, yellowfin tuna and marlin are several fish in Delaware’s local waters.
Perhaps you’d rather ride solo. Explore the water on a personal watercraft. Your heart will be racing as you zoom along at high speeds, or you can simply go at your own pace. Double and triple jet skis are available at some locations.
SURFING
STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD
Since the waves here are simply perfect year-round, why not use your vacation as the perfect opportunity to learn how to surf? There are plenty of shops where you can rent a surfboard and get private lessons from a local pro. From first-timers to the casual surfer looking to learn new tricks, surf instructors work with people of all ages and skill levels.
More serene, yet with extra strength required, learn the popular pastime of stand-up paddleboarding. All you need is a board and paddle, and you’re set to go. Connecting with Delaware’s nature while improving your strength and balance. You’ll enjoy incredible views of the horizon and possibly even catch glimpses of dolphins. Once you master the SUP, you’ll be able to take these skills with you anywhere you go!
BOAT RENTALS Plot your course for fun on a pontoon, speedboat or other watercraft available at local boat rental locations. A great way to get that adrenaline pumping is on a speedboat. Or you can kick back and enjoy a family excursion on a pontoon boat.
All you need is a board and paddle, and you’re set to go!

Fenwick Island lies right on the Delaware-Maryland state line, just north of Ocean City. Quiet and serene, Fenwick offers some of the cleanest beaches in the region. One of the most popular attractions in Fenwick Island is the nearly 160-year-old Fenwick Island Lighthouse, an 87-foot-tall lighthouse built in 1859. The towering white beacon is open for tours throughout the summer—except when it’s raining. However, visitors are prohibited from climbing the tower. If you’re visiting on Aug. 7, each year, National Lighthouse Day is celebrated, and the grounds are open to visitors. You will also find unique items in Fenwick’s one-of-kind boutiques, local restaurants serving a variety of delicious cuisine and plenty of activities such as boat rentals, a waterpark and putt-putt. You won’t want to miss the weekly Fenwick Island Farmers Market for the island’s freshest produce and locally grown and homemade goodies. Head to the corner of Coastal Highway and East Essex Street every Monday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, June 17 to Sept. 18 to shop local.

While the town’s atmosphere is decidedly laid-back with that small-town charm, Bethany Beach also has all the modern amenities and services you could ask for, such as unique shopping, restaurants and a wealth of things to do. The Bethany Beach Farmers Market takes place every Sunday beginning in mid-June through Labor Day. Offering the brightest blueberries to piles of freshly picked green beans and every item in between. A morning at the farmers market is a delightful way to ease into the day.
IT’S AN IDEAL LOCATION FOR THOSE WHO CRAVE THE SERENITY OF THE BEACH BUT ALSO DESIRE THE CONVENIENCE TO MORE THRILLING FUN AND ATTRACTIONS
Bethany Beach’s short, half-mile boardwalk is a great place to stroll and enjoy the ocean views, shop or catch a live show. Regular concerts at the boardwalk bandstand provide a variety of musical entertainment, from modern country to Irish Latin funk, during the summer months. Other exciting events on the boardwalk include movies on the beach, karaoke, Kids Club with theater shows and talent shows. On July 4, Bethany Beach celebrates Independence Day with a parade at noon, horseshoe-throwing contests, fireworks and evening entertainment.

Famous for Pizza and
ward winning beaches, soft sand, arcades and tax-free shopping are a few of the things that make Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach the ultimate family-friendly destination. In May 2014, the ABC Travel Guides for Kids named this popular area fourth among the Top 5 U.S. Family East Coast Beach Destinations. Later, Family Vacation Critic named Rehoboth Beach one of the 2015 Ten Best Beaches for Families for a second time. This is the kind of place that hosts sandcastle contests, fireworks and free Bandstand performances—all equally popular with kids and adults, visitors and locals. Not convinced yet that this is one of America’s most family-friendly destinations? Then take a look at this list of eight of the best things to do in Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach with your families.

Ghostly Encounters at the Annual Sea Witch Festival
Readers of Coastal Style Magazine voted the local Sea Witch Halloween & Fiddlers' Festival a 2015 "Best Of" winner. The Sea Witch Halloween Festival draws approximately 200,000 visitors every year who love it for its costume parade full of ghosts and goblins, the best costumed dog contest, amazing musicians, horse shows on the beach and live entertainment. Youngsters can join a Kid’s Treasure Hunt, go trick-or-treating and ride ponies on the beach. Families can make scarecrows or try old-fashioned beach games such as the wacky Broom Tossing Contest.

Family-Friendly Dining This area is called “The Culinary Capital of the Culinary Coast.” It
features seafood-focused menus, coffeehouse retreats, ethnic cuisine and comfort food—and most restaurants cater to kids. Classic cinnamon rolls, cookies and house-made pies delight families. Parents appreciate kid-friendly options at local restaurants plus terrific happy hour prices. Find tacos, terrific burgers and stellar seafood. Romantic, adult dining is made perfect while sitting on an outdoor deck during warm weather months. This and so much more!

Local Beaches
A warm-weather trip to the Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach area isn’t complete without, well, a trip to the beach. Frommer's Travel Guides named Rehoboth Beach among its 20 best vacation destinations, and it has been called one of the cleanest beaches in the United States. Long stretches of warm, soft sand flank brilliant blue to deep turquoise ocean waters. There’s plenty of space to spread out towels beneath massive umbrellas and plenty of lifeguards on hand to assist swimmers of all ages.

For leisurely views of local plants, wildlife and water, Cape Henlopen State Park includes trails with varying degrees of difficulty and length. The Gordons Pond Trail features crushed stone that easily accommodates hikers, bikers and strollers. In addition to forested areas, open fields and marshes, this lovely park is home to a pavilion, concessions and two iconic WWII towers. Bird watching is a favorite pastime in spring and fall. Twelve feet wide and six miles long, the handicap accessible Junction and Breakwater Trail is created with crushed stone and equipped with restrooms and bike racks. The trailhead begins at the historic Wolfe House and meets Tanger Outlet Center.

Water Sports and Wildlife
Water activities are a big part of enjoying these Delaware beaches year-round. Whether you rent bright-hued, stand-up paddleboards, paddle through calm waters in a kayak or catch the summer breeze from a small sailboat, there are many possibilities for enjoying the water that go beyond a quick dip. For an added dose of adventure, hop aboard a jet ski or try

skimboarding or parasailing in Dewey Beach. You can take a three-hour kiteboarding lesson or glide through local waters on a full-sized surfboard. In addition, eco-tours by kayak will introduce your family to water-loving wildlife as well as a water taxi across the bay. Beach fun extends to tours through the watery depths of Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach. Late July through early October is the perfect time for dolphin-watching when the gregarious mammals often swim just off the shore. Whales are occasionally spotted in the area and whale-watching cruises are within an hour or two from the shore. Several companies offer close by dolphin cruises too. For added fun, check out kids pirate cruises.

Exploring Rehoboth Beach History
For the price of a donation, Rehoboth Beach Museum will introduce your family to the legacy of fun at Rehoboth Beach, through its history, culture and architecture. Check out vintage bathing suits, surfboards and even archaeological artifacts. Antique postcards provide black-and-white glimpses of beach life too. Founded by the nonprofit Rehoboth Beach Historical Society in 1975, the museum is located inside Rehoboth Beach’s former ice house, and maintains the Anna Hazzard Tent House—a turn-of-thecentury “tent” house where religious “Camp Meeting” gatherings took place. The museum runs children and adult programs throughout the year. Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center. Visit www.Beach-Fun.com for more information.

What can you do to help?
Crossing Terrapins
• Drive slowly on Route 1 (Coastal Highway) between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach from May through July. The females will be crossing the road from the Bay side to the Ocean side to nest in the Atlantic dunes and lay their eggs. It is a dangerous crossing for these gentle animals. • Leave extra distance between you and the car in front of you. Cars may stop suddenly or swerve. If you are following too closely you may be unable to react in time to avoid a terrapin. • Use extra care at nighttime. The terrapins nest round-the-clock and are very hard to see in the dark. • If you see a terrapin in the road and want to help, use caution when stopping. Pick her up gently on each side of her shell and place her behind the terrapin fencing on the bay side. She won’t bite, but be prepared; she will be frightened and will flail her back legs that have sharp claws. • Don’t drop her under any circumstance. She and her eggs may be injured. If you are scratched, don’t worry, the terrapin does not transmit disease. • Adult females can live 25 to 30 years and will reproduce for 20 years and produce 8–36 eggs per year if allowed to live. Please help them cross the road safely. Keep pets and people away from their nests.
Facts About Diamondback Terrapins • • • • • • • • • • • •
on Delaware’s Route 1
Why did the turtle cross the road? To lay her eggs! Each year, just as people are heading for the beaches, so are the female Diamondback terrapins. The terrapin lives in the Delaware Inland Bays, but the females lay their eggs in the soft sands of the beach dunes, and midMay to mid-July is their nesting season. Some of these beloved creatures are killed crossing Coastal Highway. Unfortunately, nearly all the terrapins that are killed are adult females. Because they can live for 25–30 years and can continue to reproduce for two decades, every female lost is also a loss of all her potential offspring. One solution is more sandy beach habitats on the Bays. But these natural areas are becoming rarer and rarer as shorelines are hardened with rip rap and stone. As an alternative to bulkheads and riprap, the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, a nonprofit organization committed to the protection and preservation of the watershed and local marine life, recommends installing a “living shoreline.” This is a term used to describe a number of options that reduce wave energy, trap sediment and filter runoff, while maintaining (or increasing) beach or wetland habitat. Such habitat can protect Diamondback terrapin populations by providing areas for feeding and growth.
Diamondback terrapins are non-migratory and spend their entire lives in bays, creeks, salt marshes and coves. Terrapins do not reach maturity until a minimum age of six, and then produce only 8–36 eggs per year. This low reproductive potential means that female terrapins must reproduce for many years in order for the population to grow or remain stable. The terrapin is considered an aquatic organism, but female terrapins must lay their eggs in open, sandy areas to successfully reproduce. These are among the few times that terrapins exit the water. Although little is known about the behavior of very young terrapins, juveniles and hatchlings spend a lot time on marshy shoreline searching for food—such as arthropods, clams, crabs and small crustaceans. Because of alternating areas of sandy beaches and marsh waters, the natural shoreline around the Inland Bays is an excellent terrapin habitat. Habitat loss is a significant threat to the continued existence of the Diamondback terrapin in the Delaware Beaches. Beach nesting areas are universally and permanently being altered through riprapping, bulk heading and other shoreline stabilizing practices. Shoreline stabilization that uses bulkheads or riprap destroys the narrow strip that has suitable sandy material required for nesting as well as high beach elevations necessary for the successful development of terrapin eggs. If terrapins nest in areas that are not sufficiently above the high tide, the developing embryos can drown. Or if they lay their eggs in higher, grassy areas, eggs and hatchlings can become entrapped or killed by grasses. It is estimated that only two percent of terrapin eggs hatch, owing largely to predation by foxes, skunks and raccoons, which dig into nests and consume the eggs and baby terrapins. Surviving hatchlings emerging from the nest are often eaten by gulls and crows or by herons and predatory fish after entering the water. Traditional nesting areas have been severely and permanently altered by waterfront development. Beach habitat is critical to the continued existence of terrapins. Research indicates that more than 95% of breeding females return to a particular area to nest year after year. —Delaware Center for the Inland Bays

includes physical training— sprinting, swimming, running and each staff member is at their peak physical condition. They also run different medical or emergency situations— “what if” scenarios. Whether a veteran lifeguard or a new hire, each lifeguard is expected to “sharpen the knife” and prepare for every eventuality. They practice everything—from multiple victim rescues to broken necks to multiple location rescues. They are also well acquainted with reuniting lost children with their parents, an occurrence that happens hundreds of times each summer. Every scenario is imagined and played out in real time. Each beach patrol has a prestigious history of keeping residents and visitors safe. The Rehoboth Beach patrol was started in 1921 by Benjamin Shaw. In those days, people swam more fully clothed, and because of limited swimming skills, people were often pulled out into the ocean. The Bethany Beach Patrol has unclear beginnings, but since their start, they have not had one drowning. This is a testament to the young men and women and a record they wish to preserve.
Every day includes physical training— sprinting, swimming, running and each staff member is at their peak physical condition. Rehoboth Beach are close in proximity, and although each beach patrol is similar, each has their own way of performing their very important tasks.
I
f you’re an early riser heading down to the sandy shore in Bethany Beach or Rehoboth Beach, you will see an incredible sight. Dozens of young men and women dressed in red, training their minds and bodies and preparing for a day of protecting visitors. Every summer, tens of thousands of beachgoers flood the usually quiet Delaware Beaches, and the proud members of the beach patrol are prepared to keep these people safe. Bethany and 28 |
To become a member of this elite group of lifesavers, the hiring process starts well before the summer season. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age, but some hires are older professionals, like teachers who have their summers off. Each applicant endures a rigorous hiring process, including a standard background check and drug test, as well as strenuous physical testing which assesses swimming, strength and running ability. They’re also brought in for a face-to-face interview. 50-100 applications come in every year, but only the best of the best are chosen. “It is competitive,” says Joe Donnelly, captain of the Bethany Beach Patrol, “but if they have the qualities we are looking for, we try to make a spot available for them.” Even after all this, hiring is probationary until they become first responder certified. The day begins early for a Bethany Beach or Rehoboth Beach lifeguard. Every day
Over the years, these patrols have grown to accommodate the huge influx of summer guests. They’ve also evolved to include the latest technological and medical advances. Methods may have changed, but the ideal of serving the community has stayed the same. If you visit Bethany Beach, you will still see an interesting nod to their past. Although each lifeguard stand is equipped with a radio, they also utilize a flag signal system adopted from the U.S. Navy. Each hand signal with flag corresponds to a different letter, and lifeguards learn these to communicate over long distances. Captain Kent Buckson of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol is extremely proud of his young lifeguards who compete in lifeguard competitions receiving national titles. Both Rehoboth and Bethany Beach have a thriving Junior Lifeguard Program, with as many as 100-200 participants each summer. Visitors to the Delaware Beaches can feel safer knowing these dedicated rescuers are watching over them. “What amazes me most is how dedicated they are to serving the people that visit the town and to the residents,” says Captain Donnelly. “Every day they want to be the best at their craft. I’m proud of that.”

ers and streams. Don’t be surprised if you are joined by herons, deer and other wildlife, even just a few miles away from the bustling beaches. The natural beauty of this area shines through at all area courses, providing a serene environment for total relaxation. The unique terrain found at most area courses is not only visually stimulating but also provides rare challenges that test a golfer’s ability. There are some ambitious holes on area courses—challenging enough that golfers keep coming back again and again to lower their handicap. Of course, most courses were designed with both the professional and beginner in mind, so even a first-time golfer can enjoy a day out on the links at the nearby courses in Delaware and Maryland. In order to be ready to tackle that Par 3 or fish your ball out of a freshwater wetland, you need to have the proper attire and equipment. Make sure your outfit is appropriate for the course by stopping in a pro shop to find all your favorite brands of golf clothing. If you left your clubs at home, many courses offer club rentals, or you can pick up some new ones at a pro shop if you’re in the market. With help from the friendly staff and the great selections of golfing equipment, rest assured that you’ll be the most perfected golfer on the course— and the best dressed as well. Most golf courses offer lessons for every level of golfer. Whether you need to tweak your swing or get a full introduction to this game of precision, on-site pros are there to help. Learn the basics from one of the expert instructors, or work on advanced techniques with a pro. In addition to teaching the fundamentals, lessons can offer swing analyses, general pointers for evaluating the course and tips for your short game. Some golf courses also have the additional benefit of an on-site driving range. Or if you want to enjoy a day on the green with your kids, there are courses that allow them to learn the keys to playing a good game. Some even offer parent/child programs for the mini golfer who’s interested in more than just putt-putt. Top-quality service and clubhouses are standard, so if you can’t get your game up to par—or under par, we should say—stop in at the clubhouse for a tasty beer and meal. Some of the area’s finest clubhouses feature deliciously fresh food and cold drinks in a casual setting. Take in the lakeside views, meet your golfing buddies and make some new friends as you reminisce about golfing excursions

and share techniques. Some clubs even offer swimming, tennis and dining, all in one place. Many courses offer deals on day-long play packages and giveaways as well as “stay and play” packages that are perfect for those who want to play golf by day and relax on the greens by night. Why go anywhere else when you can have it all in one location? You can relax knowing that when you return after a long day on the green, you’ll find top-notch facilities and a friendly staff ready to help you unwind. There are a great variety of hotel selections in the area for a mix of economy or luxury accommodations. No matter which place you choose to stay, you’ll get a good night’s sleep and be energized for a brand new game in the morning. Many hotels even offer complete golfing packages that allow you the privilege of trying out several different ranges of courses at various locations rather than playing the same course over and over. If that wasn’t great enough, many of the packages may include free club cleaning and storage, breakfast, lunch and beverage vouchers, complimentary golf towels, tees, ball markers and guaranteed preferred advanced tee times. Since the Delaware Beaches community is dedicated to golfing and the courses vary to suit everyone from beginner to professional, there is an experience waiting for every golfer. So try one, try all—with beautiful weather and spectacular scenery, Southern Delaware and Maryland’s golf is an experience all visitors will enjoy and continue to come back for year after year.

T
he Delaware Beaches are more than a desirable vacation destination, the region is undergoing a rapid revolution, becoming a coast boasting, cutting edge leader in culinary arts as well as a blossoming curated cocktails and craft brew scene. The Lower Shore craft beer scene is proving itself to be the Mid-Atlantic region’s craft brew powerhouse. Located on our beautiful strip between ocean and bay are over a dozen local craft breweries. Visitors to Delaware and Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shores will find themselves immersed in malts and hops, crafted with local love. The abundance of farm fresh ingredients and an endless concentration of creative business minds make the beach region a booming Mecca for craft beer enthusiasts all across America.
Don’t overlook the local liquor scene either! Small batch distilling with a beach twist is building a name for itself along the coast. Try mixing up the fan favorite “Orange Crush” with a local vodka. Just remember, no matter where your favorite spot to throw a crush back, if they’re not really crushing it, they're not doing it right. The Orange variety enjoys all the hype from visitors, but you can tell a true crush veteran by their love of the crisp Ruby Red Grapefruit variety. Curing a crush hangover is easily accomplished by visiting any one of the famous build your own Bloody Mary bars. A solid staple of every beach breakfast spot, the expansive lay outs cater to everyone’s palate with incredible offerings of flavor, spice and toppings (can you say mini crabcake?!). Roll right into your day’s drinking adventure with a round of the “industry favorite” Green Tea shots. Jameson blended with a splash of peach schnapps and sour mix offer a potent punch but sweet taste, making it easy going for drinkers of any variety and a sure-fire favorite of any beach bar libation slinger.
No matter your choice of devil’s brew, the Lower Slower beaches of Delaware and Maryland offer just the right concoction of fun and relaxation with a touch of local flair. By Briana Rovinskie Director of Operations and Sales, Fins Hospitality Group Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

GOOD EATS AT THE BEACH! BY BOB YESBEK
W
elcome to the Delaware beaches! When it comes to vacationing between the Atlantic Ocean and the Rehoboth Bay, you can’t throw a beach ball without hitting a great restaurant! Affectionately known as the Nation’s Summer Capital, the Rehoboth Beach area receives regular kudos from such luminaries as the James Beard Foundation, the Michelin Guide, Zagat, the National Restaurant Association and Wine Spectator Magazine, just to name a few. In my various writings, I have the honor of describing, reviewing and photographing good restaurants here at the beach. And it’s not only about fine dining: There are budget-friendly casual eateries and carryouts to fit every wallet. Which, of course, begs the question: Do you like pizza? There’s no shortage of pizza here on the Culinary Coast! In the first block of Rehoboth Avenue alone, there are four pizza joints that are never without a line in the summer season. In fact, over 55 years ago the founder of the first pizzeria in the area cultivated a following by handing out free slices to vacationers who had no idea what to think of that cheesy delight. Now they know, and it’s everywhere. Dewey Beach (a minute or two south of Rehoboth), Bethany Beach (about 15 minutes south), and historic Lewes (about 5 minutes north) are connected by U.S. Rt. 1, aka Coastal Highway. As the Delaware Cape Region has flourished, restaurants have sprung up all along this busy thoroughfare, including informal spots that dish up cheesesteaks, pizza, made-to-order tacos, burgers, towering deli sandwiches, kicked up bar grub, seafood, Vietnamese specialties, mac ‘n’ cheese and submarine sandwiches— or grinders or heroes or hoagies or po’boys or torpedoes or zeppelins, depending on where you were born. No matter what you call them, and no matter what your budget, great eating here on the Delaware coast is never more than a walk or short drive away. Mid-priced eateries at the beach offer relaxed, sit-down dining and reasonably priced fare. In downtown Rehoboth Beach you’ll find made36 |
from-scratch gourmet Chinese dishes, raw bars overflowing with fresh seafood, hot & spicy Thai, authentic Turkish cuisine and Mexican food— from Salvadorean/Spanish fusion all the way to straightforward Tex-Mex. And don’t forget Italian! House-made pastas, wood-fired pizzas and genuine Italian specialties are all in ample supply. Locals tout the Dewey Beach “way of life,” and there’s always a party with quesadillas and margaritas on the sand by the bay; huge raw bars and buffets with an assortment of seafood entrees; fried chicken, burgers, dogs and early-morning breakfast spots— several of which will happily pour you a bloody mary or mimosa to kick start your day at the beach. And many of them proudly declare: No shoes? No shirt? No problem! Downtown Lewes is the acknowledged epicenter of everything from short rib sliders to lobster rolls, from Belgian delights to gourmet pizzas to wood-smoked BBQ, fresh baked goods and roasted-beforeyour-very-eyes coffee. Gourmet candies, homemade ice cream and authentic Italian meats, cheeses and desserts are all just steps from one another in the First Town in the First State. If you come to the beach for fine dining, you will not be disappointed. The very first fine-dining restaurant in Rehoboth Beach celebrates its 43rd season in 2017, and several neighboring spots are not far behind. Chef-driven specialties such as rabbit, duck, Angus beef, Berkshire pork and fresh seafood are the mainstays of local upscale menus. A few specialty restaurants allow you to select your own tasting menu from a long list of unusual creations. Conventional wisdom suggests that Rehoboth’s Baltimore Avenue is ground zero for fine dining, and with seven high-end eateries in those two short blocks, that’s probably a fact. But Rehoboth Avenue, Wilmington Avenue, Coastal Highway and Lewes are not without the classy touch. In fact, Lewes sports two of the nicest restaurants in the region virtually next door to one another! Vacationers will not leave Delaware hungry if it’s morning and early afternoon feasts they crave. There are well over 25 breakfast and
brunch spots in the immediate area; everything from tiny in-town storefronts where flip flops and bathing suits are the order of the day, all the way to lavish buffets with omelet stations, waffle pods and chefs in dress whites carving standing rib roasts. I’ll give you fair warning: If you are squeamish about restaurants in strip centers, you will need to leave that at home when you visit. Space, parking and access are at a premium on this narrow strip of sand, and some of the best restaurants share walls with other businesses. Local brewers, distillers and wineries are some of my favorite guests on my weekly radio show (it’s probably because they bring samples). Many of these entrepreneurs helped pave the way for in-restaurant breweries, and there are presently eight brewpubs that tap their own creations as well as that of their cohorts. Distillers range from those that specialize in rum all the way to full lines of vodka, gin and whiskey. Some even offer tours—with the obligatory sample at the end. Reason enough to check it out. As one of the guides for the EatingRehoboth. com downtown restaurant tours, I have the singular pleasure of introducing visitors and locals to new restaurant experiences and upscale gourmet shops. The three-hour walks invariably end with guests telling me how they would never have tried this or that place without being on our tours. But now, armed with the information here in the Delaware Beaches Visitors’ Guide, you can embark on your own tour of everything food and drink here on the Culinary Coast. You’re at the beach: Enjoy! And bon appétit. Bob Yesbek, aka The Rehoboth Foodie, publishes the restaurant news & reviews website www.RehobothFoodie.com. His columns appear regularly in the Cape Gazette, Beach Paper and Coastal Style Magazine. Sip & Bite with the Rehoboth Foodie can be heard every Saturday from 3–5 p.m. on Delaware 105.9 FM.
