More Bang for Your Booth make the latest wedding must-have more affordable
I
In recent years photo booths have become a wedding must-have for capturing the memories of a once-in-a-lifetime event in a creative way. Photo booth rentals can average from $500 to more than $1000, but there’s a more wallet-friendly option. Try building your own booth or even using items already available to you.
Backdrop Find a fun fabric or large quilt that complements the theme of your wedding, and depending on your setting, drape and hang over the nearest door, tree branch or stand that you can create yourself using pipe and pipe fittings.
Get technical Use your own or borrow/rent a decent camera with a tripod. Set it about six feet in front of the booth. Purchasing a remote control (about $12) for the camera will create a more seamless photo booth session for your guests and eliminate the need to set a timer or have someone clicking behind the lens. Besides, photo booth pictures are best when candid! Tip: Keep your batteries charged, and have backup!
Option 3: Ultimately less is more, and extra attachments can be purchased for your camera in case the flash needs a little oomph. After all, building your own photo booth is saving in the long run, so why not splurge on the lighting? Tip: Always, always do a test run of your photo booth to settle any glitches before the big day.
Props Incorporate your surroundings. Is it a summer wedding? Use a picket fence in the backdrop. Is it a fall wedding? Spray paint decorative gourds and place atop a cute table outside where you have the view of the red-orange-mustard palette. Leave a basket of props near the booth area. Depending on your wedding style, fill the basket with feather boas, glasses, large vintage frames, moustaches and even a whiteboard to write messages to the man and woman of the hour.
Retrieval Lighting Option 1: Natural lighting can do wonders depending on the time of day and location of the ceremony. Option 2: For an indoor wedding, lamps of various sizes and wattages can be arranged around the booth area, but the risk of clutter can be an issue if there are little ones (or intoxicated ones) running around.
Host all of the photos on a photo-sharing website such as Flickr or Shutterfly. You might create a cute sign that lists the website. This not only saves funds on photo paper and ink, but it eliminates any chance that the printer decides to flake out.

Happily Ever After Party follow up the reception with some additional fun | By Angela Blue
Y
You’ve taken formal pictures, heard all the toasts, eaten dinner, mingled with guests, cut the cake and tossed the bouquet. You’re finally ready to let loose and dance the night away, but suddenly the bartender is announcing last call, your DJ has begun playing Donna Summer’s “Last Dance,” and your venue’s event planner is politely reminding you that the city’s noise ordinance restrictions require your party to end in the next five minutes. Don’t panic. Try putting this wedding trend to use— the after party! Gather your group of night owls for an extended celebration that will allow you to party ’till the sun comes up. It’s a special way to extend your wedding day and spend more time with your guests.
Invitation Since the after party isn’t as formal as a reception, it’s fine to be casual with the invitation. Include a card with the party info with your wedding invitation pack, or announce the details on your wedding website. Anyone invited to the reception should also be invited to the after party, whether or not you expect them to come.
Location It’s likely that your guests have imbibed a bit during the reception, so choosing an after party location that’s near the venue is a must. Otherwise, you’ll need to have transportation available for everyone. Perhaps there’s a club or lounge within walking distance of your venue, or maybe someone has rented a hotel suite large enough to host the party. As much fun as it sounds, don’t offer to host the after party in your own suite. After all, this is your wedding night.
Food If the drinks will continue, so must the food. Hitting a nearby bar? A few rounds of appetizers will suffice. However, if you’re hosting the event, get a little creative with late night bites such as mini sliders, truffle fries and spiked shakes. Depending on how late you plan to party, you could also serve late night breakfast munchies—mini bagels and lox, egg strata cups baked in muffin tins and bloody mary shooters.
Dress You’ve managed to go through the whole reception without spilling anything on your dress, so let’s preserve its tact by not wearing it to a bar. Now’s the time to lift that hemline with a sexy but sophisticated mini dress. Accessorize with a pair of glittery heels and a cute clutch.

Reception Perception Modernizing The Cookie-Cutter Celebration We all know the recipe to a standard wedding reception: 1 cup “Cha Cha Slide” 2 tsp. newlyweds exchanging a smack of cake in the face A dash of food choices that you may or may not be keen on Perhaps you’re ready to experiment with different ingredients. Here’s a list to get you started:
1. Mix up the music. By now nearly everyone knows how to dance “The Wobble,” how to sing along to the Top 40 hits and how to get down, stand up, whisper and yell when “Shout” is played. Here are some fun ways to veer from the typical songs: Play songs from a rented jukebox for a nostalgic feel. Leave a quarter at each place setting, and allow each guest to choose a song. Have a karaoke reception, and let your guests be the performers! You’ll have a mix of romantic duets, fun group songs and perhaps some solos that may take a couple years to live down. Let the music accompany your theme—square dancing for a barnyard bash, swing music for a vintage affair or romantic jazz for a simply elegant evening.
2. Skip the dancing. You may opt for a first dance, but forgo the choreographed numbers and borderline inappropriate moves that occur

after one too many signature cocktails. Instead, take advantage of your guests’ talents. Perhaps you’ve invited an exquisite violinist, a modern dancer or surreal painter. Give your guests some entertainment they’ll always remember, and let them take center stage to showcase their own talents!
3. Let the games begin. There’s always the cousin’s son’s daughter or the distant uncle’s younger brother’s son who has no idea how they’re related to the bride or groom. Instead of them lingering on the outskirts of your big day, involve them in a game of corn hole, a round of Scrabble or handmade trivia spotlighting the duo of the hour. Games allow your guests to mingle and have fun despite their distant relations.
Life. Well Played. Cedar Point Country Club Offering a beautiful riverfront setting for weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners, luncheons, bridal showers, golf outings and more! 8056 Clubhouse Dr., Suffolk, VA 23433 757.238.2275 • www.cedarpointcountryclub.com
4. Go local. Get a little inventive with the food. Scope out local ingredients, a food truck or a brewery from the area, and incorporate them into your wedding feast. From local honey to the best homemade cheeses, your guests will admire your eye for charming details to create an unforgettable, seamless meal.

Tips For Making It Feel Like A Vacation • M ake a promise that you won’t go home for anything. In order for this to feel like a real vacation, pretend you’re miles away from home even if you’re in the same city. • T ake a vacation from communication. Turn the cell phone off, don’t check your email, and leave social media alone. Eliminating distractions will make it easier to focus on one another.

Bride

A HIGH SCHOOL CRUSH REVISITED BLOSSOMS INTO TRUE LOVE Who: Jack Durham, systems engineer, and Ameesha Felton, reporter and online producer, both from Virginia Beach. When: June 9, 2012. Where: Cathedral of Faith in Chesapeake and reception at Chesapeake Conference Center. Guest List: 150 guests. Where They Met: They both attended Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach and were in the same English class but didn’t date. During her sophomore year at VCU and his sophomore year at VSU, Jack contacted Ameesha through Facebook. After talking on the phone and meeting again in person, Ameesha realized how perfect he was for her. “We shared a lot of the same values, and his sense of humor could brighten any day,” she says. “I also didn’t realize how handsome he had become.” The Engagement: On Valentine’s Day 2010, Jack asked Ameesha if she wanted to grab a bite to eat, and during dinner, the topic of marriage came up. When Ameesha asked if Jack could see himself with her for a long time, he pulled something out of his pocket, saying, “Well, as a matter of fact ...” However, it was just his cell phone. “I thought he was just being silly,” Ameesha says, laughing. When she looked up again, Jack had pulled out an engagement ring and asked her, “Will you do me the honor of being my wife forever?” Wedding Wishes: “We were in a place in both of our lives where we were able to afford certain things for our special day. I felt like a princess. It was a blessing,” Ameesha says. What’s Next: Along with their regular jobs, Jack owns a small driving school business in Virginia Beach, and Ameesha is freelancing online. Ameesha says Jack is into entrepreneurship, and she wants to travel and have an online startup business. “We are going to hit the ground running. We want to build our little empire,” she says. 40

Left Love and Faith Combined: “We know with our love, but more importantly our faith, we can get through anything,” says Ameesha. Left Cake: The couple chose vanilla pound cake with butter cream frosting. “I love simple desserts,” Ameesha says. Right Bouquet: A gorgeous bouquet of irises and calla lilies was created by Event Central. Right Sweets Table: Grape slices and taffy are added to this delectable chocolate bar for a splash of contrast. “I think chocolate is the candy of love, and I wanted everyone to share a piece of what we felt for each other,” Ameesha says. Right Groomsmen: Jack’s groomsmen included his older brother and close friends from high school. Right Dancing King: Ameesha’s 3-year-old nephew, Austin Gregory, danced the entire night and was the star of the show. Right Bridesmaids: Two of Ameesha’s bridesmaids were her sisters, and the others were close friends from college and her hometown of Virginia Beach. Right Shoes: Ameesha chose purple Nina heels because they were elegant, yet functional. Below First Kiss: “When we kissed for the first time, everything around us just seemed to stop or move in slow motion. It was like everything that we had been through—good and bad— was culminating to that one moment,” says Ameesha. “It solidified the foundation of our love and life together.”

INDIAN TRADITIONS BLEND WITH MODERN ELEGANCE TO CREATE A RAVISHING AND ROMANTIC CELEBRATION Who: Dr. Hiten Patel, chief radiology resident from New York, and Dr. Nikita Patel, recent medical graduate from Virginia Beach. When: Sept. 22, 2012. Where: The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center. Guest List: Approximately 500 guests who traveled from India, England and throughout the United States. Where They Met: The couple was set up by a mutual friend. They connected through conversations and finally had their first date in New York City. “Once we met, we never looked back!” Nikita says. The Engagement: Hiten planned a beautiful trip to Cozumel, Mexico, and on their last day there, they climbed to the top of a lighthouse and caught a romantic view of the beaches. To Nikita’s splendid surprise, Hiten suddenly got down on one knee, pulled roses out of his backpack and proposed on the spot. Wedding Wishes: Hiten and Nikita had a vision of combining modern touches with their Indian traditions. Nikita always wanted an outdoor wedding but found ways to incorporate this feeling indoors using various props and décor. What’s Next: In New York, Hiten will be doing a medical fellowship, and Nikita will be applying for medical residency. Alongside their careers, they plan to experience new adventures and travel. In the future, they hope to settle down in Virginia to raise a family. 42

Left Happy Couple: "Our wedding day was like a dream that I didn't want to wake up from. Everything was beautiful and every moment so special," Nikita says. "I'm ready for the next celebration, to spend the rest of my life with my best friend." Left Cake: To match her bouquet, a design of white roses was embedded into the cake from Incredible Edibles, Virginia Beach. Left Handprints: The bride and groom participate in a ceremony that signifies leaving their parents’ home to start a new home together. They leave a set of red handprints in remembrance. Left Bouquet: White roses are Nikita’s favorite, and she incorporated peacock feathers since peacocks are the national bird of India. The bouquet was created by Le Reve Creations, Richmond. Above A Grand Entrance: Hiten and his nephew Kaden during the Baraat, a special celebration when the groom typically arrives on a horse or elephant. Right Brotherly Love: Nikita’s brother Krish and his friends performed a celebratory dance for the couple, consisting of a remix of popular Hindi movie songs. Right Mendhi: Before the wedding, an Indian bride typically has a celebration where family and friends watch the bride receive her mendhi (the application of henna). Elaborate designs are created on the hands and feet of the bride. According to a saying, the deeper the color stains, the deeper the love between husband and wife. Right Traditional Dance: Nikita explains that Indian weddings are celebrated with lots of song and dance. Her cousin Pooja performed a dance for the bride and groom in celebration of their wedding. Right Bride: Nikita traveled to India to purchase the dresses for her wedding. For the ceremony, she chose the traditional color red, which brings good luck to the bride and to her marriage. Sowing The Seeds Of Love
T
relationships—and garden goodies—take root and are shared on the big day | Styling and words by Patrick Evans-Hylton
There are many metaphors about relationships and gardening—and with good reason. Both require sowing seeds and require attentiveness to be nurtured during growth. Both take root, and, with care, bear fruit. Along those lines, for a fabulous food favor at a wedding—or for many other occasions—we like to look at the timeless tradition of sharing the bounty of our garden. A quick and easy way is through refrigerator pickles; these come together with minimal effort, but the payoff is delicious. And, if you don’t have a garden, you can visit a neighborhood green grocer or farmers market to pick up some produce.
We’ve pickled cucumbers, but there are many vegetables and fruits that you can apply a similar technique to. We’ve used a charming Mason jar with labels we’ve printed out on our computer and tied it up with spring-hued ribbon. Consider adding a label with instructions to keep the pickles refrigerated, and to consume within a month. You may also give some guidelines on use beyond adding to sandwiches or eating out-of-hand. We add them to relish trays, and chopped in deviled eggs and bound salads like chicken, egg, macaroni, American-style potato, tuna and the like.
refrigerator bread & butter pickles
Ingredients 2 pounds Kirby or other pickling cucumbers, sliced 1/8-inch thick 1 large sweet onion, like Vidalia, sliced thin 3 tablespoons kosher salt 2 cups cider vinegar
1-1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon celery seeds 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
Method
In a large bowl, toss cucumber and onion slices with salt and place in a large colander over the sink; allow to drain for one hour. In a large saucepan, combine vinegar, sugar, mustard seeds, celery seeds and turmeric and bring to a rapid boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and add cucumbers and onions. Cover the pan and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and transfer pickles, onions and liquid to a gallon glass jar and refrigerate at least 24 hours before use. Keep refrigerated. Pickles will keep 1 month.
