seating plans and escort cards have guests sitting in style

Words and styling by Angela Blue

S

eating charts are essential for any reception that will involve a large group of people sitting and eating together in the same room. Otherwise, parties may be split up, and guests could be stuck at a table with people they don’t know. Save your guests the risk of tripping and falling as they make a mad dash to claim their dinner spot—not to mention the feigned

pleasantries some poor soul will be forced to exchange with Uncle Gus after he’s had one too many—all because they weren’t quick enough to snag a seat with their pals. Since it’s understood that seating charts are beneficial to all, have some fun with them. There’s no rule stating that tables must be categorized by number with guests’ names listed blandly underneath

or that place cards or escort cards must consist of a piece of cardstock folded like a tent. Your seating chart and escort cards may reflect a certain theme, can be displayed as creatively as you wish and could even include a surprise gift for each guest. Decide which arrangement works best with your reception’s motif, and gain the comfort of knowing that your guests will be seated in style.

SeatingShells by the Sea Shore If you’re planning a wedding on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, it’s only natural to include a beachy keen theme in your escort card display. Write guests’ names on seashells, and place them in boxes filled with sand to designate different tables. You can purchase shells, or, for a special touch, wake up early one morning, grab a bucket, and head to the beach with your sweetie for a stroll along the Oceanfront. They’re free, and it will be meaningful for guests to know that you hand-picked these shells together. Plus, with all the stresses of planning, a relaxing walk on the beach is just what you need.

Musical Chairs Show your passion for music from a distinct era by having your seating charts designed to look like sheet music. Go a step further by naming tables after famous singers from that time. Once your design is complete, hang the cards on pieces of string with clothespins for a charming flair. These musical charts are a splendid way to jazz up the evening while making sure no one is left singing solo.

SweetSeat s

Treat your guests with dainty confections to nosh on as they’re making their way to their assigned tables. Cake pops are all the rage now because they’re fun, colorful and completely portable, not to mention oh-so-good! You can either make your own or ask your baker about creating these decadent delicacies. Cover a piece of Styrofoam with a fun material that matches your color scheme, and poke cake pop sticks through the fabric. To assign places, attach small tags to each pop with the guest’s name and table number.

Through t he Looking Glass This truly sentimental and memorable chart is easy to make and can be altered to be as personal as you wish. Start by obtaining an old window. Make sure there are no cracks and that the glass is solidly held in place. You could opt for windows with divided panes that would designate different tables, or if you choose a frame with no dividers, you can separate the tables using flowers, buttons or whatever trinkets you fancy. Write guests’ names using liquid chalk markers, and decorate the frame using photos of the two of you, memorabilia from your relationship and any other objects that will add a romantic touch.

BranchingOut For a garden or rustic reception, give a nod to nature by writing guests’ names on leaves and hanging them from tree branches. The branches could be placed in jars and centered at each table, or there could be one large tree branch suspended from the ceiling with guests’ names and table numbers hanging from the leaves. We’ll go out on a limb to say that these arrangements will leave guests in awe. n HRB

T

he four somethings (old, new, borrowed and blue) are traditionally worn or carried by the bride on her wedding day to ensure good luck. The custom began in Victorian times, and each item has a special significance. The old represents the bride’s past and her connection to her family. The new symbolizes her new life that’s she’s about to begin. A borrowed item reminds the bride that her friends and family will always be there for her, and the blue represents faithfulness and loyalty. The last part of the rhyme, “and a silver sixpence in her shoe,” is rarely followed today. We asked happily married brides and brides-to-be in Hampton Roads what items they had or are planning to have with them on their wedding day, and they were delighted to share with us the traditions passed on through generations, the sentimental meaning that certain items hold and for some, the care-free whimsy of breaking all the “rules” and establishing their own.

Blue

I will be wearing my mother’s wedding dress at my wedding. This will be my something borrowed since I don’t want to make my mother feel like I think of her as old!—Cassie W., Hampton

The blue pendant attached to my garter belonged to my Grandma Jo that passed away last November. My cousins used it as their something blue in their weddings, and they surprised me with the pendant the day of the wedding.—Andra R., Virginia Beach

My blue was my hydrangea bouquet. —Molly B., Norfolk My great aunt hosted a bridal breakfast for my bridesmaids and me the morning of the wedding. She had filled a bowl with butter mints, all white and pink except for one blue one right in the center, which she had placed there for me. She said that it was a tradition that dates back to the 1940s. —Angela B., Norfolk Of course, there’s no rule that you have to abide by tradition. I didn’t have any. We went to city hall and had a reception at Doumar’s—amusing and stress-free. —Eileen D., Norfolk

The ribbon on my flowers holding them together was the ribbon from the first dozen roses he gave me. —Alex M., Suffolk

We didn’t follow the rules. I also saw the groom while wearing my wedding dress the week before the wedding!—Catey L., Newport News n HRB

I wore my great-grandmother’s necklace that my great-grandfather had given her on their wedding day in 1907. Every bride in my family has since worn it, and I was the centennial bride. I wore it in remembrance of all our loved ones who had passed.—Bryn B., Norfolk

In memory and honor of my paternal grandparents, who were married for 54 years, I wore my grandmother’s wedding band on my thumb and attached one of her rhinestone brooches to the ribbon on my bouquet. —Melissa S., Norfolk

heartfelt hodgepodge Compiled by Angela Blue

Who: Jon del Rosario, a graphic design student at The Art Institute and employee at Trader Joe's in Virginia Beach, born in Italy but a Virginia Beach resident since age 5, and Andra Rosenberg, hair designer and makeup artist at Salon Vivace, born and raised in Virginia Beach. When: November 11, 2011. Where: Green Meadow Stables, Chesapeake. Guest List: 150 guests, mostly locals with friends and family from California, New York and Florida. Where They Met: Jon knew who Andra was since she had been DJing at a local club for years; she didn’t know him, but the two connected through an Otis Redding video posted on Facebook. They had their first date at the Taphouse in Norfolk and have been together since. The Engagement: On Andra’s birthday, she and Jon had dinner at Fellini’s in Norfolk. Their

family and friends contribute homemade sentiments for a vintageinspired celebration on the farm

families met for the first time at the dinner, and at the end of their meal, Jon got down on his knee and proposed, having already asked Andra’s parents earlier in the week. Wedding Wishes: “We wanted rustic vintage,” Andra says. “Nothing too fancy, but based on old ideas and just hodgepodge. The fact that nothing matched was perfect!” What’s Next: Jon and Andra traveled to the Mayan Riviera for their honeymoon off the beaten path of Cancun. “We were a bit wary when our travel agent mentioned Cancun, thinking of spring break and all, but this area was like Sandbridge whereas Cancun would be like ‘the strip’ in Virginia Beach,” Andra says. Now the couple is living in Town Center in Virginia Beach and excited for the rest of their lives together.

Photography by Yulia McClammrock | Hair and Makeup by Elizabeth Paschall, Salon Vivace The Breakdown ABOVE Ceremony: For groomsmen and bridesmaids, Andra had four and Jon had three. “It didn’t matter if it was a man or woman; if they were my pal, they were on my side,” Andra says. Her dad made the bamboo chuppah, representing the new happy home that the couple will create together. BELOW Pumpkin Butter: Andra’s parents made and canned pumpkin butter for the

18 HAMPTON ROADS Bride

guests to take as their favors. There were also ½ pint jars with apple and pumpkin pies in them for guests to enjoy right away. Shoes: With the whole wedding being hodgepodge, Andra knew that she wanted a pair of shoes to match. “I saw them and had to have them,” she says. Hot Air Heart: Andra’s brother makes hot air balloons (in addition to all sorts of things, according to Andra). “We made a wish and set it free,” she

s p r i n g / s u m m e r

says. “We could see it floating for miles and miles.” RIGHT Table Setting: Guests drank iced tea, cucumber water, wine and beer out of Mason jars. All of the plates were unique and purchased from thrift stores. The food was prepared by family. “Family recipes, made for 150,” Andra says. “Such amazing people, my family.” Bonfire: Jon’s cousins made the bonfire, a last minute decision since it ended up being chilly. “It was perfect!”

Andra says. Hanging Jars: Andra’s aunt and cousin put together the flower-filled jars hanging from poles that lined the aisle. After the ceremony, the flowers were removed, and the jars were filled with LED candles to create a lit path. Special Day: Andra says they chose the date 11-11-11 so that it’d be easy for Jon to remember. “And even if he forgot, he’s so rad that it would be ok,” she says.

Who: Ronald Long, a conductor at Norfolk Southern Railroad in Crewe, originally from Lunenburg County, and Britni Smith, a registered nurse at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Bon Air, originally from Richmond. When: May 26, 2011. Where: Church Point Manor, Virginia Beach. Guest List: 40 guests, including immediate family and their bridal party members from Richmond and Lunenburg. Where They Met: Ronnie and Britni both lived in the small town of Victoria, where they met through mutual friends. The day before Valentine’s Day 2006, Ronnie asked Britni to be his Valentine, and on Valentine’s Day, he sent her six roses and a card that said, “From one last minute person to the other.” They’ve been together since. The Engagement: Ronnie can’t keep secrets or plan surprises because he gets too excited, according to Britni. “Once Ronnie decided he wanted to ask

nearest and dearest gather at historic church point manor for a sweet and sophisticated celebration

me to marry him, he did it,” she says. It happened to be Dec. 25, 2009 at 2:30 a.m. He had no ring and no plan—just a question! “It was total Ronnie Long style,” Britni says. “I must say it was a surprise in itself!” Wedding Wishes: The couple wanted a wedding that was simple, where everyone would be comfortable and have a good time. “Our ceremony and reception were amazing, the food was great, our bridal party looked very good, and everyone had a good time. In the end, that’s all that matters anyway!” she says. What’s Next: Ronnie and Britni went on a seven-day cruise to Haiti, Jamaica and Cozumel, Mexico. “It was a total blast, and we met so many new friends,” Britni says. Now they are living in a newly built home in Moseley. Britni plans on going back to school to receive her bachelor’s in nursing, and they hope to expand their family in the next year or so.

Photography by Susan and Robby Bolling Photography The Breakdown ABOVE Church Point Manor: The couple decided to have their wedding here based on a suggestion from their planner, Ron Form of Primo Events. “The moment Ronnie and I walked into the mansion, we knew it was the one,” Britni says. BELOW Popcorn: There was a popcorn station from Jody’s Popcorn in Virginia Beach set up in the formal living room of the mansion so that guests could enjoy a scoop of caramel or white

cheddar before and after the wedding. Ceremony: Harold Mcgee from Virginia Beach performed the ceremony, which Britni described as beautiful. Cupcakes: Since Ronnie and Britni are both indecisive, they couldn’t choose just one flavor; instead they picked key lime pie, German chocolate, chocolate cheesecake, vanilla and strawberry “see-more” cupcakes from Cupcake Central at Lynnhaven Mall, Virginia Beach. Flowers: Britni’s bouquet contained white peonies and

roses. RIGHT Memorable Moments: “The ceremony went by so quickly. We were both really excited and still like, ‘Are we really married now?!’” Britni says. “It was nice to have some time alone with Susan and Robby for pictures right after the wedding.” Dress: When Britni attended her senior prom with Ronnie, she wore an antique white crinkle silk taffeta dress. She knew from that moment in high school that she wanted that type of dress to be her wedding dress. “Nicole

Miller made a strapless dress that looked almost like my prom dress, so I knew that was the one when I saw it—even before I tried it on,” she says. Rings: Britni chose the first ring that she tried on and loves the detail around the sides and cut of the diamond. Ronnie’s ring is a David Yurman band. “He chose the ‘waves’ ring, which was perfect considering we were getting married in Virginia Beach,” Britni says.

MARVELOUS MERMAIDS GOWNS ARE STILL TURNING HEADS WITH DIFFERENT STYLES FOR EVERY AISLE

One of the finest aspects of living in Hampton Roads is that we’re so close to water. There’s something truly intriguing and inspiring about the ocean, which is why we chose to emphasize gowns that emulate cherished aspects of the sea. After choosing a grand selection of discernable and exceptional mermaid styles along with a bounty of oceaninspired accessories, we made our way to the aquatic atmosphere of the Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel. Whether you’re planning a beachside ceremony or have a genuine appreciation for the many bodies of water surrounding us, let these gowns be your inspiration for the ocean of beauty you’ll impart on your very distinguished day.

Bride SHOES

IDo to theShoe fun and flirty shades of fancy footwear for your wedding day By Angela Blue and Pam Hopkins

The dress is undoubtedly the most important fashion piece that you’ll be choosing for your wedding. Why else would be there be an entire television show dedicated to saying yes to it? However, just because your gown is the spotlight stealer doesn’t mean that your shoes have to hide or even be the same color as your dress. Break the pattern of boring, white wedding shoes and break in these bold and beautiful heels for a real “shoe” stopper effect.

DIY DIVA

To add a personal touch to your wedding shoes, consider embellishing them yourself. Buy an ordinary pair of pumps and dress them up with buttons, ribbon, fabric, lace, rhinestones or other trinkets of sentimental value. The shoes will have special meaning since you created them yourself, and best of all, they’ll be one-of-a-kind, just

like you! (1) Surrender to your passion for polka dots or other fun fabric by tying beautiful bows and attaching them to either the tops or backs of your shoes using a hot glue gun. (2) Show your shoes some love by making them more romantic. Using a hot glue gun, adhere lace around the opening or the heel of

your shoes, and affix rhinestones or repurposed jewelry that may have a sentimental meaning. (3) Confirm your “I Dos” to the backs of your shoes by bedazzling them with rhinestones cut-outs. Personalize your own to say whatever you’d like, or purchase preassembled ones from your local craft store.

Fabulously Froufrou Still questioning whether you can pull off the one-shoulder look? This absolutely ravishing gown has the answer. A less traditional mermaid silhouette, the dress is made from a beautiful organza with rouched bodice and tiered, ruffled skirt and comes with an optional oneshoulder strap that’s fabricated from the same ruffled material as the skirt. Stick to the sweetheart neckline or add the strap for a touch of glam, and don’t forget the glimmering rhinestone belt and headband to brilliantly accent your ensemble. Gown: Pronovias La Sposa “Sala” with optional one-shoulder strap, $2,255. Belt: Pronovias belt with rhinestone center, $325. Headband: Edward E. Berger bendable headband with rhinestones and flowers, $190. All from Maya Couture, Norfolk.

DARLING DRESSES THAT DOUBLE THE GLAMOUR WITH A SINGLE SHOULDER The one-shoulder trend has had a huge influence on fashion in the last year, so it’s only natural that bridal gowns are following this fabulous fad. Asymmetric dresses are often more comfortable than strapless gowns that tend to sag unless perfectly fitted, yet they’re not as conservative as full-strapped styles. The captivating aspect of one bare shoulder combined with the sweetness of these stunning gowns creates a fabulous collection of styles that are beautifully unbalanced. Glamorous Goddess You don’t have to travel to Greece or even have the nickname Aphrodite to be a goddess of love and beauty. The flowing ethereal grace of this gown is accented with a one-shoulder chiffon sheath and features a ruched bodice sprinkled with light beading and a delicate sweep train. Gown: Pronovias diamond white one-shoulder with sweep train, $390 from Blush Bridal, Port Warwick, Newport News. Jewelry: Forever bangle bracelets by Annaleece, three for $57.50. Bride Postnuptial depression

We're Married! Now What? dealing with the realities of postnuptial depression By Kimberley Cuachon-Haugh

I

got married exactly two years ago. Well, if you count the second wedding, it was one year ago. My husband and I eloped and then waited until our one-year anniversary to do it again with our immediate family and best friends. We planned our second wedding for months and anticipated our families meeting for the first time and how they would behave. But the love we felt from them mixed with the “Kumbaya”-aura of everyone finally getting along turned out like a PG-13 movie that I would have replayed over and over. However, even with all the time that had passed, I still hadn’t ordered any wedding photos. I don’t know why; I just didn't feel like it. “It’s nothing, I’m just busy,” I kept telling myself. But after speaking with a friend, I realized that this nothing may actually be something. Postnuptial depression is not a clinical diagnosis, but it’s a term that has become more recognized by couples and psychologists. In fact, 10 percent of American couples seek counseling after experiencing postnuptial depression. Dr. Candice Cook, a licensed professional counselor, marriage counselor and family therapist in Virginia Beach, says the melancholy that brides and possibly grooms can experience after the big day occurs for a number of reasons. “This is the bride’s day; the whole world stops on that day for the bride. And suddenly, your day is over,” she says. Besides dealing with stepping out of the spotlight, Cook explains that the immense stress that occurs during the planning process of a wedding can cause the body to produce an excessive amount of cortisol, a stress hormone. “When it keeps coming out it literally rips the body apart,” explains Cook. “It’s seizing every available opportunity for the body to make energy.” This results in not eating or sleeping well, thus leading to the body and mind crashing. “The body is like an orange that’s been squeezed dry.” Yvonne Alers-Folden, 28, described the eightmonth planning of her 11-11-11 wedding as very stressful. She and her husband, who are both in the military, were six-months pregnant, in the midst of purchasing a home and dealing with separate military orders, in addition to the normal nuptial necessities. Now, after moving into their new home, AlersFolden still craves to re-live her wedding day. “It’s sad that it’s over,” she says. “How often is it all about you?” Continued on page 42>>>

Bride Postnuptial depression <<<Continued from page 40

Shawn Femia, a professional wedding photographer, works with her husband, Ronnie Form, an event director and owner of Primo Events in Hampton Roads. Both encounter a number of brides who continue to contact them long after their weddings to reminisce. “After dealing with these couples I can see that it’s not just about the wedding,” says Form. “It’s like they’re afraid of being married now that the wedding is over.” While men typically stress before the wedding, women will often deal with their stress afterwards. They ask the question, “Who am I now?” says Cook. This, along with the new roles of man and wife that the couple must resume—based on each person’s family upbringing—can add more pressure to a marriage. “Most marriages are really two superegos interacting with each other,” says Cook. “In a marriage the superego does not know the difference between you and your mate. It judges your mate in the

Postnuptial depression is not a clinical diagnosis, but it’s a term that has become more recognized by couples and psychologists.

same way it judges you, and your mate is doing the same thing to you.” Cook explains that because superegos are created between the ages of 2 and 6 years old, they are immature and must evolve. Couples must have the willingness to explore and work on this with one another, she says. “They must understand that a marriage is based on love and understanding, not rules and regulations.” To beat the postnuptial blues, Cook says, “Don’t neglect the basics.” Couples should get sufficient rest, proper nutrition and a good multivitamin along with exercise such as yoga or even medication to offset the cortisol. When couples have bothersome feelings about their mate, Cook recommends that they have a sitdown—not a confrontation but a description of what is going on inside. Since coming to terms with my feelings, I have picked out my wedding photos. They have been retouched, framed and were admired by our friends for the first time during our holiday party at home. After writing this article—which I admit was partially selfish because it was therapeutic—the aftershock of my wedding day is subsiding. While I cannot relive it, my husband and I have our sights set on a HRB definite renewal of vows. n 42 HAMPTON ROADS Bride

Tea For You Bride fab food favors

a seasonal beverage blend makes a thoughtful, relaxing favor

Words and food styling by Patrick Evans-Hylton

N

ature is in full bloom with spring or summer weather, and our Fab Food Favor takes advantage of that feeling of rebirth and renewal with a fragrant, relaxing tea blend that is wonderful to share with guests as a remembrance of the special day. Our blend incorporates dried lavender flowers, dried chamomile flowers and green tea leaves. The result is a beautiful combination of purple, yellow, white and green—colors of the season—that produces a delightful bouquet. To make the tea blend, combine equal parts dried lavender flowers, dried chamomile flowers and green tea leaves. Make sure the dried flowers are food-grade and have not been

treated with chemicals meant for flower arrangements or potpourri mixtures. We purchased a fine-quality green tea for that ingredient. Toss all three components together in a large bowl, and fill the tins with the mixture. We placed our tea blend in small tin containers, purchased online for less than 50 cents each, tied them with ribbons and attached a card. On our computer, we created stylized initials and a poem, which reads: Picture you, and picture me Together for eternity Just how happy we will be Me for you and you for me The print outs were cut out and pasted on heavy-stock paper—the initial on the outside and the poem on the inside. We punched a hole in the upper left-hand corner, threaded it with ribbon and tied it onto the tin full of our HRB tea mixture. n
