Welcome

The Heart of the Virginia WaterfrontSM

N

estled where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk is regarded as the cultural, financial and entertainment heart of the Virginia waterfront. Vibrantly alive and bursting with opportunities for recreation, dining and entertainment, Norfolk offers its guests adventure all day long and into the night.

Did you know... Norfolk has a rich history spanning more than 400 years? It all began when John Smith and his crew cruised past this area looking for a landing point, eventually ending up in Jamestown. With its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk has always been a vital center of commerce and industry, as well as a strategic military location. The area was right in the thick of several Revolutionary and Civil War battles: in 1776, two-thirds of the city was destroyed by the Royal Governor of Virginia, and a cannonball from the siege can still be viewed today lodged in the wall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. What’s more, during the Civil War, the infamous battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac was fought off these shores.

Begin your visit downtown and enjoy the energy and culture of this thriving city by the sea. Enjoy a visit to Granby Street, one of the city’s bustling mainstreets, with its upscale shopping and dining offerings. Then head straight to the waterfront to take a leisurely stroll along the brick pathways through Town Point Park, located adjacent to the Waterside Festival Marketplace and the Half Moone Cruise & Celebration Center. With its rich river view landscapes, the park is a lovely green space of peace and tranquility in an urban setting. On select weekends, Town Point Park plays host to a variety of premier festivals and events, including the annual Norfolk Harborfest® and tall ships Parade of Sail into the Norfolk Harbor as well as the bi-annual wine festival. The park’s permanent outdoor main stage, with its state-of-the-art acoustics, draws music lovers from across the region to hear a variety of planned musical entertainment. To the right of the park is Nauticus, a maritime-themed science center and home to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, presenting centuries of naval history. Don’t miss a tour of the Battleship Wisconsin berthed at the complex. For those who love to be immersed in history, continue down the brick walkway along the waterfront to the historic Freemason district. The cobblestone streets and grand old homes offer a view into a by-gone era. Be sure to visit the historic Hunter House Victorian Museum located on Freemason Street. erthed at Nauticus, the Battleship Wisconsin (BB64) is one of four Iowa-class battleships – the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy. On December 14, 2009, she was donated to the City of Norfolk for permanent use as a museum ship. In 2012, the Battleship Wisconsin was listed in the Virginia Landmark Register. The ship is 887 feet long and weighs 45,000 tons; it was, literally, a “City at Sea” with a crew of nearly 3,000 men during her heyday in WWII and now visitors can experience and explore it firsthand.

Since assuming official stewardship, Nauticus has begun opening previously sealed off interior spaces of the battleship for the public to explore. Visitors can start “walking the decks of history” inside Nauticus with a six-minute introductory film, Forward for Freedom, which brings the Wisconsin to life through the stories and commentary of those who served aboard. On board the ship, an exhibit located at the entrance to the Wardroom, For All Those in Uniform Who Have Served, pays tribute to the armed forces, with an initial focus on Senator John W. Warner, who was instrumental in bringing the Battleship Wisconsin to Norfolk. Walk onto the Wisconsin’s teak decks, explore her from bow to stern, and step into the ship’s Wardroom on self-guided tour. For an additional fee, guided tours are offered periodically throughout the day that take visitors deeper into the ship’s lower and upper decks, including the combat engagement center, navigation Naval Station Norfolk is the largest naval complex bridge, captain’s cabin, crew’s mess, galley, barber shop, ship store, and much more. Neighborhoods

A Look Into Notable

Norfolk Neighborhoods GHENT Historic Ghent was long ago considered rural country as it was only a plot of farmland far from downtown Norfolk. During the early 1900’s, stately homes were built along the treelined Hague canal making it the fashionable place to live through the first half of the century. Through the 60’s and 70’s students, writers and musicians crowded Ghent, the ultimate artists’ haven. Fast-forward to 2014. The main thoroughfare, Colley Avenue, and adjacent 21st and 22nd Streets are still a hub of activity, offering eclectic eateries, unique shops, art galleries, and antique stores. The Naro Extended Arts Cinema, on Colley Avenue, screens foreign and independent films. Doumar’s Cones and BBQ, an old-fashioned drive-in, whose owner created the world’s first ice cream cone machine, is located just a few blocks from the main drag.

HISTORIC FREEMASON The cobble-stone streets and grand old homes of Norfolk’s historic Freemason District, named by the American Planning Association as a Top 10 Great Neighborhood in 2013, offer a view into a bygone era. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Historic Freemason is located along the Elizabeth River just down the brick pathway from The Battleship Wisconsin. It was first settled in 1686, when “one hundred acres of land in this vicinity were granted to the Elizabeth River Parish for a glebe.” It is the city’s only neighborhood Located by Harbor Park baseball stadium along which accurately depicts a visual chronology of architectural styles over three centuries. the Elizabeth River in downtown Norfolk, the new Today, Freemason has a growing collection of antique shops, boutiques and assorted Norfolk Amtrak station services daily Amtrak trains eateries, including the Freemason Abbey Restaurant, housed in a 136 year-old church. ampton, the 400-year old city located in the heart of Coastal Virginia, is multi-faceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. A visit to Hampton inspires travelers to return again and again, whether for leisure visits or for major industry conventions. The cultural landscape of North America’s oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement is dotted with historic attractions that interpret Hampton’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. On November 1, 2011 President Obama named Fort Monroe a National Monument. Visitors are encouraged to explore the nation’s largest stone fort, cross the moat to explore within the walls, and climb Fort Monroe’s walls to enjoy the spectacular view of the harbor. At the Casemate Museum you can learn about Fort Monroe’s vital position at the entrance to the harbor and see the cell where Jefferson Davis was held at the conclusion of the Civil War. A tour aboard the Miss Hampton II reveals Fort Monroe’s companion fortification, Fort Wool, located across the channel at Hampton Roads’ entrance.

Museum, founded in 1868, has a collection of more than 9,000 works of contemporary art and artifacts spanning African, African-American, Pan-American and Native-American cultures. The Hampton History Museum located in Downtown Hampton provides a glimpse the major moments in Hampton history that helped shape our great nation. From the Native American gallery depicting the lifestyle of the Virginia Indians living at Kecoughtan prior to the first settlers’ arrival, to the colonial and Antebellum galleries, you will witness life in Hampton during a simpler time. The life-like charred ruins reflecting the burning of Hampton in 1861 in the Civil War gallery illuminate the reconstruction of Hampton and how greatly the seafood industry impacted Hampton’s post-war economy. The founding of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1917 in Hampton was the precursor of NASA and the founding site of the American space program, and a perfect segue to your next Hampton attraction! Your exploration of America past, present and future continues at the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside Digital 3D IMAX Theater. The result of Hampton’s nearly century-long relationship with NASA, there are more than 100 flight simulators and hands-on exhibits of air and space innovations. The Riverside 3D IMAX Theater presents digital feature films and documentaries on a five-story screen. Next door, the Hampton Carousel spins visitors on hand-carved horses and chariots built in 1920 by European artisans. The Miss Hampton II harbor tour boat and the Ocean Eagle fishing boat are located nearby along the Hampton waterfront. There are many historic churches in downtown Hampton and the surrounding communities. The parish of St. John’s Church, the oldest Anglican parish in North America, was founded in 1610. You can visit the church sanctuary and hear a recorded introduction. The fascinating cemetery is an amazing adventure in itself, with headstones spanning more than three centuries. The charming streets surrounding St. John’s are lined with small shops, restaurants, art galleries, and parks. The streets and downtown parks come alive with special events from April through October. Citywide events and concerts featuring internationally acclaimed artists draw crowds to Hampton Coliseum and to The American Theatre year-round. You are sure to adore the boutique and antique shopping in Downtown Hampton and Phoebus. The locally-owned dining establishments receive raves from Hampton residents. National favorites and still more restaurants unique to other parts of Virginia can be found at Peninsula Town Center in the Coliseum Central District. An array of more than 70 national and regionally-owned shops is presented at

The 2014 Festival officially begins on April second with the legendary Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. The season continues with the world premiere of Stewart Copeland’s Orchestral Ben Hur. Best known as the drummer for rock band The Police, Copeland is also an accomplished composer. You don’t want to miss this groundbreaking American musician perform in his new score to the 1925 MGM silent epic Ben Hur performed live with Virginia Arts Festival Orchestra. The Virginia International Tattoo—long regarded as the most patriotic of the world’s great tattoos—thrills audiences year to year with an awe-inspiring spectacle of music and might. Designated as a signature event of the United States of America Vietnam War 50th Commemoration, the 2014 Tattoo will honor our Vietnam veterans and their families with an astounding display of patriotism, international cooperation and inspirational music. Step into Saturday-night elegant clubs in Jasmine Guy’s theatrical marvel Raisin’ Cane, and Dance Theatre of Harlem’s triumphant return after 10 years on hiatus. Classical Music is always a major part of a Virginia Arts Festival season and 2014 continues the tradition with concerts including Tallis Scholars, Chanticleer and Miami String Quartet. You’ll hear violinist Joshua Bell, jazz pianist Chick Corea; Nnenna Freelon, one of today’s great queens of jazz; celebrate the gifts of our own Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Richard Strauss’ heroic Alpine Symphony, enjoy Red Molly as their great harmonies shift from folk to 50’s pop; and much more. There are so many reasons to visit Norfolk in coastal Virginia, so make your travel plans today! For more information about the Virginia Arts Festival, visit vafest.org, or call (757) 282-2800.

Dining

Dining & Nightlife Throughout Norfolk

W

hether you’re looking for a family-friendly meal, a romantic night out, a culinary tour of restaurants or pub food, Norfolk has something for everyone—and every appetite.

Norfolk has a reputation as a culinary hotspot in coastal Virginia for good

reason. The city’s culinary tours highlight local seafood specialties, award winning chef’s signature dishes and tapas created with locally sourced ingredients. So where to go to satisfy your taste buds? Downtown Granby Street’s “restaurant row” offers to satisfy your hunger with a full spectrum of culinary experiences. Dine alfresco on Colley Avenue & 21st Street in historic Ghent, where the sidewalks are lined with restaurants, hip bars and cafes, offering unique dishes with many veganand vegetarian-friendly options. Try house-smoked meat, fair trade organic coffee and authentic French cuisine in the historic Freemason district. Plenty of family-friendly dining options dot the Military Highway area of

historic Ghent where you’ll find Norfolk’s first gastropub, the Public House. Also located in Ghent, the thriving artisanal European ‘Birch Bar’ caters to the city serving craft beer and cheese pairings. Others to add to your list are Press 626 Café & Wine Bar, Byrd & Baldwin Bros., and Todd Jurich’s Bistro, which all boast some of the world’s best wine lists according to Wine Spectator magazine! After an evening of noshing & sipping, top off your night with a little live music & dancing! Check out the Granby Theatre on Granby Street, or some of the popular hangouts in downtown Norfolk & historic Ghent like Belmont House of Smoke, Hell’s Kitchen or the Taphouse Grill. Buy a ticket to see a show at the nationally renowned NorVa, a historic theatre built in 1917 that once was home to famous vaudeville acts. Readers of Rolling Stone magazine were recently polled about “venues that rock,” and they chose the

Norfolk, offering up reasonable prices and classic dishes. Down the road in Ocean

NorVa as the place that rocked the hardest. The NorVa topped the list of 10 best

View, you’ll find some of the locals’ favorite spots for succulent seafood fresh from

venues across the country, beating out such legendary spots as The Fillmore in

the bay with a spectacular water view.

San Francisco and The Troubadour in Los Angeles.

Norfolk is home to Virginia’s first urban winery and two thriving local breweries, and all three have tasting rooms and tours available. Wander over to

Don’t forget to check in at one of the several local coffee shops for some java and you might stumble upon a poetry slam or open mic night!

The

Mermaid Parade The Story Behind Norfolk’s Public Art Project Posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries are Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid.

Today, the mermaid symbol is synonymous with civic pride, and it exemplifies Norfolk’s appreciation of the local arts community, its dedication to the arts and maintaining Norfolk’s rapid pace of growth, economically, and culturally. Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, free-spirited mermaid as its official city symbol as part of the “Life, Celebrated Daily” campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts, and the mermaid drove home the idea a “New Norfolk” was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside,” says Bob Batcher, the city’s Director of Communications. “We needed a new brand.” In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr. introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker accredited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks, and storefronts of

Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it,” says Batcher. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired. “The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways,” says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art.” To learn more about Norfolk’s mermaids and to download a mermaid walking tour map, visit www.mermaidsonparade.com.
