From locally owned specialty stores to nationally known retailers, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to practice “retail therapy” in Newport News! The unique architecture of Historic Hilton Village is the perfect backdrop for the eclectic collections of locally owned shops that makes this a “can’t miss” experience. The choices are many and varied and include vintage and consignment clothing, antiques, jewelry, gifts, home furnishings and decorative items. Located along Warwick Boulevard, in the eastern end of Newport News, Historic Hilton Village is also home to several restaurants. City Center at Oyster Point and Port Warwick are two more shopping areas with a “neighborhood” feel. You’ll find specialty retailers offering collectibles, designer shoes, fine cigars, gifts, jewelry, men’s and women’s clothing, organic food, pet gifts, and spa treatments. Both have restaurants within walking distance and regularly scheduled entertainment during the summer months. Combined, Jefferson Commons and Patrick Henry Mall, have over 1 million square feet of great shopping. Favorite national retailers anchor both areas, and offer everything from books, baby clothes and fine wines to shoes, sporting goods, and clothes for the entire family. Surrounding both shopping areas are even more national retailers with many more choices, including toys, tools, housewares, computers, cookware and electronics. Finally, the Denbigh area of Newport News, along Warwick and Denbigh Boulevards in the northern part of our city, also features national retailers. And don’t forget to shop at our network of museum stores for unique and personal gifts – from educational to just plain fun! Make the Newport News Visitor Center your first stop for expert

TESTIMONIALS FOR VISITING FRIENDS AND FAMILY:

Insider Tips LINDSAY & ZACH

Meet Lindsay and Zach Fauver – Zach and Lindsay met as students at Christopher Newport University and decided to stay in Newport News after graduation. Zach, a real estate agent, and Lindsay, a wedding and portrait photographer, live in Hilton Village with their rescued Goldendoodle, Lucy.

The Mariners’ Museum is outstanding for out-of-town visitors. It has incredible exhibits and so many interesting facts to learn. Shopping and dining in City Center is also one of our go-to activities with family.

DOG WALKING:

Hilton Village! We love the sidewalks and friendly atmosphere! We also love to take Lucy on the Noland Trail.

FAVORITE FESTS:

Newport News Fall Festival of Folklife and the Newport News Greek Festival!

OUTDOOR FUN:

We love to walk or run on the Noland Trail, kayak on the James River, and mountain bike in Maury Park behind Riverside Hospital.

NIGHTLIFE:

We are a little obsessed with Hilton Tavern! They have a fantastic beer selection. We love that they support local talent and host live musicians and bands. Brickhouse Tavern is another favorite for a beer and great pizza.

EATING OUT:

Newport News has an outstanding dining scene. Our two favorites for special occasions are 99 Main and Circa 1918. Their chefs are so talented! We also enjoy Salsa’s when we’re craving Mexican food and Hayashi Sushi and Grill for an entertaining Hibachi experience!

DATE NIGHT:

nd a y a s Lind h Fauv}er Zac {& Lucy

A wonderful date night is to watch the sunset on the James River either at the end of the Hilton Pier or at the Lion’s Bridge and then go to “Wine on Wednesday” at 99 Main. We recommend getting dessert to go with your wine... they make the best Maple Bacon Ice Cream!

BARGAIN SHOPPING:

For great deals on name brand clothing, I go to Act II consignment store. Not only can I find quality bargains, but they donate 25% of their proceeds to a local women’s shelter. I decorated my whole house with antique and vintage items from Rooms, Blooms, and More. They take consignments so the selection is always changing!

PHOTO OPS:

We love the water by the Lion’s Bridge, and the Rose Garden at Huntington Park is beautiful for a summertime stroll. We have a tradition of taking our picture in front of the Christmas tree in City Center when it lights up at Hollydazzle– one of our most anticipated events of the year!

ARTS SCENE:

We really enjoy anything at the Ferguson Center, the Downing - Gross Cultural Arts Center (where we held our wedding reception), the Peninsula Community Theatre and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center!

Sydney: I would take them to the Virginia Living Museum. It is really pretty and I know they would love all of the animals. Plus, it is like having all of Virginia under one roof. Layne: We like to go tubing in the James River, climb around in Fort Fun or go to the beach since it is only 45 minutes away.

Insider Tips Meet Sydney and Layne – Friends since kindergarten, Sydney and Layne are middle-school students in Newport News. When they’re not hitting the books, the two 12-yearolds enjoy hanging out with friends, shopping, going to the movies, and painting pottery.

RAINY DAY FUN:

Sydney: Shop, go to the movies or maybe to a museum like The Mariners’ Museum or the Virginia Living Museum. Layne: Rebounderz, a trampoline place where you can jump around, and Ice Plex, the local ice skating rink, is another fun place.

Layne: Patrick Henry Mall because there are so many shops to choose from. Also, Port Warwick and City Center at Oyster Point.

TO VIRGINIA BEACH

Newport News AreA MAp

Getting Here

Our location in the heart of Coastal Virginia means we’re less than 400 miles from many major U.S. cities, including Baltimore, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.

We’re literally next-door to Hampton, Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, plus Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield and Virginia Beach are all less than an hour away.

Amtrak offers daily direct service from Washington, D.C., while the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport currently includes regular flights on Allegiant, Delta, Frontier and US Airways. More flights are available at both Norfolk International and Richmond International Airports.

Reaching Newport News is simple. Whether you take the scenic route, use the interstate highway network, reach us by plane or train, you’ll find us “right in the middle of everything.” Visit www.newportnews.org for an online interactive map.
