Our name is derived from a Jamaican soup because “Mon it rundown so goooood.” We imported the name and the soup and so began our journey. Over the years our menu has developed into a blend of Pacific Rim & Caribbean dishes. Since our conception in 1993 we’ve grown into a bigger building and completed the addition of the Tsunami Bar & Deck. Catch of the Day Blue Crabs Are A Family Affair Along the Outer Banks By John M. Aydlett, North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

A

s the sun peeks up over the horizon to usher in a new day along the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, hardworking crabbers have been up for hours baiting their crab pots and preparing for the day's work. Steadily, they guide their boats through the same waters that have provided a livelihood for their fathers and grandfathers since Native Americans introduced them to the fare more than four centuries ago. For years, tourists have traveled to the area to take advantage of the fresh seafood that North Carolina has to offer. One of the most popular and abundant types of seafood in the state is blue crab. In fact, the state harvests about 30 million pounds annually. Despite the availability of fresh, locallycaught blue crab, many vendors are relying on seafood sourced outside North Carolina, and sometimes even outside

the country. This is a detriment to fishing families that have called the Outer Banks home for generations. Fortunately, the tides could be turning for local fishermen. Outer Banks Catch is a nonprofit organization that helps local fishermen by promoting the seafood industry in Currituck, Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties. They encourage residents and visitors to purchase only local seafood. The organization is composed of commercial fishermen, restaurant owners and other people who are interested in preserving and reviving the local seafood industry. Look for the Outer Banks Catch logo at seafood markets, restaurants and grocery stores. That lets you know you are receiving quality blue crab found in the waters of North Carolina. It also lets you know you are putting money back into the pockets of local fishermen and their families. Outer Banks Catch aims to serve as a knowledgeable guide to educate people on when blue crab and other seafood is available throughout the year, how to recognize if it is fresh and how to cook it.

Speaking of cooking, there are a variety of easy and delectable dishes to whip up while you’re enjoying your time along the Outer Banks. The easiest way to enjoy them is steamed over a boil of seafood seasoning and your favorite beer. You can also add the crabmeat to appetizers like stuffed mushrooms, or make a hot crab dip for your next party. Blue crab meat also makes delicious crab cakes your whole family will enjoy. n area is defined by more than just its geographic boundaries. There are people, places and things within those dotted lines on a map that help shape the idea of that space. Some may be obvious, like monuments, museums, a beach or mountains. Others, still, are less obvious, like finding a perfect place to relax with a good meal and a good glass of wine as the sun sets. The Outer Banks are defined in many ways, but for me, I think of the food and foodways, both historic and contemporary, which have brought me

to these barrier islands for the past quarter-century and keep bringing me back. Each and every one of my trips to the Outer Banks is filled with visiting familiar chefs at tried-and-true restaurants and discovering new and exciting places to dine. But one thing is consistent—the number of chef-driven restaurants on this special strip of land is phenomenal, and so many are honoring the food and foodways of the Outer Banks with exciting preparations utilizing fresh, local foods from land and from sea.

KEEPING IT LOCAL One thing to keep in mind when looking for delicious dishes with the freshest ingredients is that agriculture and aquaculture are highly seasonal. That means that you can get a tomato in January, but it’s not locally grown, unless it came from a greenhouse. One thing that makes keeping it local so special, to me, is that not everything is available at all times, and when a certain ingredient is in season, like that tomato, it is richly red, plump and juicy; you can practically taste the fertile northeastern North Carolina soil from where it grew.That doesn’t mean that you can’t get good food out of season, but when you are able, you will be rewarded. The farmland just across the Currituck Sound from the Outer Banks grows an amazing abundance of produce: asparagus, beets, berries, butterbeans, melons, greens, herbs and more—including tomatoes. Take a little time to check out resources, like the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service (NCFarmFresh.com) to see what is in market—and likely on chef’s menus—when you dine out. Just like food that grows on the land, food that grows in the sea is also very seasonal. From the waters of the North

THE CUISINE SCENE Dining out on the Outer Banks can be described in one word: diverse. OK, make that two words: deliciously diverse. Many restaurants here pride themselves on serving up a good, hearty breakfast, and this is where the region’s true Southern roots show. Look for pancake houses that offer hot-from-the griddle flapjacks with a myriad of toppings. Alongside, look for plates of bacon, sausage or country ham. There are omelets made with farm fresh eggs and vegetables, artisan muffins and other baked goods, and for brunch, places that try to outdo the next with bubbly mimosas and bloody mary bars with enough ingredients for topping the tomato tonic to feed an army. Some eateries pay homage to the seafood-centric community with fried fish, oysters and clam fritters at breakfast, too—and don’t forget the North Carolina shrimp atop a bowl of hot, buttery grits. For lunch and dinner, restaurant offerings range from sandwich shops to oyster bars to fine dining eateries. Some are relatively new on the scene, while others have been feeding families of visitors for generations. Some seafood is done Old School-style, crispy and fried, while others are crafted with such

Carolina Atlantic coast and the waterways leading into the ocean come a wide abundance of seafood. In the spring and summer, it may be soft shell crabs. Come summertime, shrimp, mackerel and other finfish and shellfish join the offerings. With fall, flounder is a true delicacy, and winter is a great time for sea trout and succulent oysters. The Outer Banks Catch program was established in June 2010. Membership in the group includes fishermen (many of whom are multi-generational watermen), seafood markets and grocers, community members and restaurants. The group works in tandem to get Outer Banks-caught finfish and shellfish from the sea to serving platters. Many restaurants in the region serve approved Outer Banks Catch seafood; a platter with the initiative’s name and stylized fish logo can be found near the eatery’s entrance to identify themselves as a member. Knowledgeable waitstaff can guide diners through what is in season and the best preparation methods. Do some due-diligence before dining out and visit the Outer Banks Catch website (OuterBanksCatch.com) to see what is literally jumping out of the water and onto your plate that evening.

Some restaurants cater to the surfing community, with Baja-inspired dishes of fresh catch and high-quality beef and pork tucked in tortillas with seasonal vegetables and housemade salsa adorning the dishes. Here, look for tropical drinks and buckets of cold beer to temper the spicy heat. Still, others feature Southern cuisine, like barbecue, fried chicken, roasts and homestyle vegetables. At some you pull up a chair at a wooden bar, and at others you sit down at a crisp, white linen topped table. One item you can’t find on the menu are the stunning views of the water at many eateries, whether it’s the Atlantic Ocean or Currituck Sound; there are numerous offerings that allow diners to gaze out from the dining room, or in some cases, a patio. You can even have a true taste of the Outer Banks with an effortless patio party for family and friends; perhaps it’s at that beach cottage you are renting. Order up an assortment of dishes from a variety of restaurants, like steamed seafood, barbecue and the like, and then have an effortless patio party with local beer and wine. Many eateries are members of the Outer Banks Restaurant Association (OBRA).

EDIBLE EVENTS Throughout the year, there are a number of events happening across the Outer Banks to showcase the delicious culinary offerings here. Each spring and fall, come for the Outer Banks Restaurant Week. So, what is Restaurant Week? It’s an effort to entice diners to come out during some of the historically slower seasons (not all are held in the winter) for restaurants and break bread. Specially priced lunch and dinner menus offer incentives to try new restaurants and rediscover old favorites. Prix fixe packages usually include an appetizer of soup or salad, an entrée and dessert. Also in the spring is the Taste of The Beach, a unique—and delicious— perspective of the area during shoulder season. The weekend-long event offers visitors several days of wine tastings, cooking classes, a chowder cook-off, special menu presentations at area restaurants, brewery tours, tapas crawls and more. Everything cumulates with the Taste of the Beach Grand Tasting where some two-dozen restaurants and other vendors gather for samples of their food and exhibitions of their hospitality in vying for prizes and recognition. Later during autumn is the March of Dimes Signature Chef Auction, another event that showcases the talent of local culinary professionals while raising money for the group.

A SENSE OF PLACE, FROM THE PLATE A visit to the Outer Banks provides an opportunity to explore the many culinary offerings from the wide-and-diverse restaurant scene. Cucumber-Basil Gimlet Ingredients 1 ounce fresh lime juice 1/2 small cucumber, sliced 1 and 1/2 ounces basil simple syrup (recipe below) 2 ounces gin Cucumber slice & basil leaf for garnish Basil Simple Syrup 1 cup fresh basil leaves 1 cup water 1 cup sugar Method Make Basil Simple Syrup: Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan, and bring to a boil. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove from the heat, and let the mixture sit for 20 minutes. Strain into an airtight container, cover and chill. Mix Gimlet: Put lime juice and cucumber in a cocktail shaker and muddle. Fill half-way with crushed ice, and add basil simple syrup and gin. Shake well, and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with basil and cucumber slice.

Sparkling Strawberry Martini Ingredients 4 ounces fresh strawberry juice (recipe below) 1 ounce simple syrup 3 ounces vodka sparkling wine, splash Fresh strawberry slice for garnish Strawberry Juice 2 cups fresh strawberries 1 cup water Method

Pineapple And Ginger Mojito Ingredients 6–8 mint leaves 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice 1/4 ounce ginger simple syrup (recipe below) 1/4 cup fresh pineapple, pureed 2 ounces rum Club soda, splash Mint and caramelized pineapple for garnish (recipe below)

Make Strawberry Juice: Puree strawberries and water in a blender until smooth, then strain into a jar through a fine mesh sieve. Mix Martini: Add strawberry juice, simple syrup and vodka to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well, strain into a chilled glass, and top with a splash of sparkling wine. Garnish with strawberry slice.

Ginger Simple Syrup 1/4 lb. ginger, peeled and thinly sliced (about 3/4 cup) 1 cup sugar 1 cup water Caramelized Pineapple 1/2 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 slice fresh pineapple 1 tbsp. light brown sugar Method Make Ginger Simple Syrup: Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan, and bring to a boil. Once the sugar has dissolved, remove from the heat, and let the mixture sit for 20 minutes. Strain into an airtight container, cover and chill. Caramelize Pineapple: Heat butter in a large nonstick skillet over high heat. Cut pineapple slice into wedges, coat with sugar, and place in hot pan. Cook, turning once and shaking pan often, until golden brown, 8–10 minutes. Mix Mojito: Put mint leaves and lime juice in a cocktail shaker and muddle. Fill half-way with crushed ice, and add ginger simple syrup, pineapple puree and rum. Shake well, strain into a chilled glass, and top with a splash of club soda. Garnish with mint and a caramelized pineapple wedge.

Now that we are set on the food side, we need something to wash down all that great seafood. Nothing goes better with local seafood than local wine and beer. The Outer Banks is blessed with an outstanding selection of locally made wine and beer. Here are a few of the local favorites that are available for visits and to purchase on the Outer Banks. Wine of course is the traditional pairing with food, so let’s begin there. Sanctuary Vineyards has deep roots in the history of the Outer Banks.

hen you first catch sight of The Jolly Roger, you might be unsure exactly what to think of it. Since its conversion from a gas station/grocery store to a restaurant in 1972, The Jolly Roger has been anything but your ordinary Outer Banks restaurant. “We’re eclectic, it’s crazy. You’ll not find another Jolly Roger; there’s no rhyme or reason to this place—and that’s what people love about it,” says owner Carol Ann Angelos. It’s been 33 years since Angelos took ownership of Jolly, and over the years she has experienced many changes, including three expansions and a renovation after Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Although the restaurant has gone through several changes over the years, Carol Ann’s style is unaltered. The restaurant decor is an eclectic blend of Christmas, pirate paraphernalia, aquatic murals, handmade boutique-style gifts and old-time movie posters. Almost as diverse as the restaurant itself is the food selection. The Jolly Roger is open year-round for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they offer something for everyone. Breakfast favorites include the Eggs Benedict, pancakes and home fries—all made in-house from fresh ingredients. Great lunch selections include burgers, NY diner sandwiches and even meatloaf. ABOUT US It all began with three partners and their idea of starting a one-of-a-kind seafood buffet business. The initial plan wasn’t just to serve a wide variety of seafood, but to serve seafood they knew themselves was both fresh and tasty. One of the partners, my husband Jerry Dowless, and I decided to buy out the business in May of 2003. Jerry, unfortunately, passed away in August of that same year, leaving me and my three children with a tough decision. We are so glad we made the choice to carry on our dreams because, today, we can proudly celebrate being in business for 18 fun and successful years. Jimmy’s offers the usual seafood fare, but with an emphasis on a Caribbean twist, giving our food choices diverse flavors from all over the world. To ensure our seafood is extremely fresh, we order heaps of fish and shellfish from local areas as well as crab legs from Florida to Alaska to North Carolina itself. Preparing as early as 4:00 a.m. on summer mornings, here at Jimmy’s Seafood Buffet we are dedicated to serving you the freshest and tastiest seafood you can find on the East Coast. From the carefully selected seafood to homemade soups to handprepared salad dressings, everything on our bar is either handmade or locally fresh. When it comes to our buffet, we have high hopes you will not be disappointed with all that is offered.
