Welcome to the

Tennessee Smokies

W

elcome to the Tennessee Smokies— where extraordinary nature and world-class entertainment combine to create one of the nation’s best destinations year round. Families and couples alike will find the region overflowing with things to do—from hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains to dancing to live music, riding Dollywood’s many roller coasters and enjoying an all-day shopping spree. Here, adventures wait for you around every corner. Across the region, there is a great pride in the history and heritage of the mountains. On a land once inhabited by Cherokees, the Smoky Mountain region has been witness to conflicts between Native Americans and settlers, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers. But throughout the years, the community has fostered their mountain heritage above everything else, and this is reflected in the culture, museums, music and theaters across the region. So come see what the locals are so proud of—the beautiful and majestic Great Smoky Mountains. The national park, created in 1934, was once a haven for the logging industry. Timber was in fact the main economic engine of the area. But intervention came just in time—only 20 percent of the forest remained uncut at the time of the park’s inception. Now, tourism has replaced timber, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the country, beating even Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. The park, straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, offers a world-renowned natural landscape with endless forests, an aweinspiring diversity of plants and animal life and the quiet beauty of the ancient mountains towering above. The park is the heart of the Smoky Mountain region, and visitors and locals find solace in the serene wilderness, where the freeway buzz and cell phone chimes can be left far behind. Of course, surrounding areas are also teeming with ways to enjoy the outdoors, such as white water rafting on the Pigeon River, horseback riding, underground caverns, fishing and much more. 16 |

tennesseesmokies.guide | 2017/2018

This region is also full of many attractions that don’t involve nature but still have that Smoky Mountain spirit. Dollywood, the famous theme park owned by legendary country singer Dolly Parton, offers the thrill of roller coasters paired with unbeatable live entertainment and events. The music, crafts and food around every corner echo the cherished heritage of the Smokies. If your idea of entertainment is shopping, you’re in luck. Choose from dozens of outlet malls, hundreds of shops and thousands of bargains. Find everything from designer brands to handmade crafts, beautiful art to unique holiday decorations. Be sure to check out the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, the largest group of independent artisans in North America. The 8-mile loop of studios and galleries allow visitors to watch as artisans create their wares. Visitors can look forward to a one-stop destination with more than 60 places to shop, popular restaurants—such as Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen— and places to stay at the Island in Pigeon Forge. Take an unforgettable ride on the 200-foot-tall Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, a spectacular Ferris wheel that features an amazing light display. The wheel sits at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As the centerpiece to the Island in Pigeon Forge, it stands as one of the tallest attractions in the Southeast! Speaking of dining, the Tennessee Smokies is home to a plethora of cuisine destinations, from

barbeque and down home Southern cooking to chain restaurants and fine dining. Try out a new dish at a locally-owned restaurant or stick with your usual favorite at a well-known eatery you don’t have the chance to eat at while at home. There are also multiple breweries, wineries and distilleries in the area offering fine wines, brews, moonshine that are locally made. One of the most popular ways to spend a day or night in the Smokies, of course, is to sit back and be entertained. Top quality shows, from comedy to country and gospel to Elvis, are constantly entertaining audiences. Find breakfast variety shows, religious spectacles, gospel harmonies, supper shows and more. In addition to all of the daily entertainment, the Smokies hosts several events and festivals throughout the year. The area is home to many exciting events and opportunities, especially at the LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge, a 232,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility in the heart of the “Center of Fun in the Smokies.” LeConte holds an exhibit hall of 100,500 square feet that’s ideal for large assembly events, trade shows and competitive events. As you can see, the Tennessee Smokies is never lacking in things to do. So get out there and enjoy your stay! We know you’ll be coming back for more.

Pigeon Forge

Mapping memories in Pigeon Forge Welcome to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee! As you are probably already aware, we grappled with a devastating natural disaster in November of 2016: the Chimney Tops II Fire. Gatlinburg

Mapping memories in Gatlinburg Things stayed pretty quiet around Gatlinburg for a long time until the ultimate game changer arrived in the 1930s. Great Smoky Mountains National Park: big name, big park. Quite a few families were required to move from where they’d lived for so long and for so many generations in order for the park to be established. Many of the families were given years, even after the Park’s opening day, to find new homes for their families outside park boundaries. This was all done in accordance with President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of an act creating the National Park Service “… to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” President Wilson’s vision was spot-on and has carried over into the modern-day Gatlinburg experience. What was coming next would be big for Gatlinburg and the surrounding area! Now boasting over 10 million visitors a year, Great Smoky Mountains National Park has transformed Gatlinburg from a sleepy little town of 70-plus years into the perennial mountain getaway choice of generations of families. Arts and crafts have long held a deep association with the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Nowhere else in the South will you find a richer heritage of fine craftsmanship than in Gatlinburg. Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, established in 1937, is the largest group of independent artisans in North America. Located on an 8-mile loop at the northeast edge of Gatlinburg, the Community proudly preserves the craft heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains year-round. A leisurely stroll on the downtown Parkway opens up a world of opportunities when you’re in Gatlinburg. From the amazement of seeing 14-foot sharks swim over your head in an underwater tunnel at Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies to gazing at all the incredible mysteries and amazing findings at Guinness World Records Museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. You can also try mountain bobsledding, barreling down the side of a mountain on one of Gatlinburg’s three mountain coasters or soaring through the sky on Ober Gatlinburg’s Aerial Tram. Plan on coming back year after year as three out of four people who visit Gatlinburg have been here before. If you love to shop, Gatlinburg is your kind of place! With more than 400 specialty shops, boutiques and galleries, you can easily find a special collectible or unique oneof-a-kind piece in this mountain resort. And dozens upon dozens of dining choices, from national chains to family-owned, provide menus featuring pancakes to prime rib, and everything in between. Scattered across the mountainsides and on the fringe roads in the hollows are cabins, condos and chalets, known for their “home away from home” ambience and privacy. Gatlinburg is looking to welcome new businesses to the Parkway in the coming year. Margaritaville Resort is bringing their Jimmy Buffet inspired brand of ocean vibes

Smoky Mountain Adventures dinner & show

A

Authentic Italian Cuisine

Voted #1 Italian Restaurant in the county. Year after Year!

–Eat Where the Locals Eat–

The Most Exciting Place to Eat

fter the success of Dolly Parton’s NBC movies about her childhood, Pigeon Forge’s newest dinner theater attraction is telling a special story very close to her heart. Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Adventures Dinner and Show will take guests on a journey they will not soon forget. “Now that Jennifer Nettles and Rick Schroeder have made my parents famous, I thought it was time to tell a story about them before I was around stealing the spotlight,” Parton explained with a laugh.

“Things were a lot more exciting before I was born and you’ll see it in this show!”

The annual Tennessee Mountain Games pits The Mountain folks and the Hollar folks in an action-packed competition to determine which side, Mountain or Hollar, will be declared, “The Best of the Best” in the Great Smoky Mountains! This riveting mountain show is a non-stop and exciting journey taking us back to a different time, telling a tale of Dolly’s own family history and how the Partons and Owens finally came together, but not before a bit of friendly rivalry kept them apart. This fabulous, spectacular show will take place as you enjoy a down home, 4-course feast! Before Parton was born, every Sunday was an event. Family would get together for some great home cookin’ and each member of the family would bring their best dish for this gathering. Like homemade biscuits, pulled pork, fried chicken, fresh picked, buttery corn on the cob, southern peach pie and even noodle salad. Everyone took pride in their dish. Having everyone together was a blessing. They would laugh, yell, jump around, play games and might even have a few competitions with each other. Then they would all sit down to that great home-cooked meal. Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Adventures bring back memories of these stories and traditions. You and your family will enjoy the skilled competition, exciting acrobatic feats, romantic aerial performance and a down-home mountain feast. It’s exciting fun for the whole family! A One-Of-A-Kind Experience in Pigeon Forge!

riving down the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, visitors’ eyes are immediately drawn to a 200-foot observation wheel that towers over one of the newest developments in East Tennessee: The Island in Pigeon Forge. After opening in the summer of 2013, The Island is entering its fifth year here in Pigeon Forge and continues to offer guests an ideal destination for family vacations, day trips or even a night out. When developing the property, it was important for The Island’s leasing team to target specialty retail shops and experiential dining establishments to create the 23-acre

entertainment destination we see today. The Island is home to stores such as Emery’s 5 and 10, which is the oldest 5 and 10 location in the South, Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery and Parrot Mountain; each offer guests a one-of-a-kind shopping experience they can’t get anywhere else. In addition to shopping, guests can experience a multitude of eateries, including Mellow Mushroom, Margaritaville and Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. The family-style restaurant serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner in a full-service, nearly 300-seat dining area that provides the perfect view to enjoy a meal while visiting Pigeon Forge with family and friends. With more than 70 shops, restaurants and entertainment establishments, exploring The Island can take some time. Having the Margaritaville Island Hotel on-site allows guests to conveniently turn their day visits into full vacations. The hotel offers the attitude and lifestyle of singer Jimmy Buffett, but with the comfort and hospitality of a Southern home. Each room boasts unique views of The Island, including the river, Market Street and even the Island Show Fountain. In addition to its Great Smoky Mountain Observation Wheel that offers some of the best views of the Smoky Mountains, The Island is home to a Bellagio-style show fountain, a number of rides for children and even a new ropes course. Live music, roaming magicians and a living statue performer are just a few of the surprises guests may see during their visits. Free parking, no admission and a wide range of activities to choose from make this destination a unique stop during anyone’s Pigeon Forge vacation. The Island in Pigeon Forge has already become one of the most visited vacation spots in East Tennessee.

T

he biggest theme park in Tennessee has some great new attractions for 2017! Every year, Dollywood offers visitors to Pigeon Forge a taste of down-home country fun. Two of the parks newest attractions will make sure your family has an unforgettable experience.

Lightning Rod Dollywood continues to add to its impressive list of world-class roller coasters. The theme park opened a record-breaking coaster in 2016. Lightning Rod is not only the world’s fastest wood coaster, but it also is the world’s first launching wood coaster. Park guests will notice the coaster’s massive lift hill, which now sits more than 20 stories above Dollywood. Once launched to the top of that lift hill, riders encounter the ride’s innovative twin summit airtime hills before racing down the 165-foot first drop. The ride reaches a world record-breaking 73 mph at the base of the drop. From there, Lightning Rod races along its 3,800-foot track through the hills and valleys surrounding Dollywood. Thanks to the rolling topography, much of the track is hidden from view inside the park, serving only to heighten anticipation for those waiting to step aboard the thrilling ride. Lightning Rod, which is located in Dollywood’s Jukebox Junction, provides guests with nearly 20 seconds of airtime. The coaster train is comprised of 12 cars, carrying two passengers each, for a total of 24 people per train.

The coaster’s hot rod-themed ride vehicles, which closely resemble tricked-out speed machines from the 1950s, have been noted as being some of the most unique coaster trains in recent memory. With the ride’s blisteringly-quick top speed, Dollywood guests will soon feel the same adrenaline-packed rush that hot rod mechanics have after stepping behind the wheel of one of their newest creations for the first time.

Splash Country’s TailSpin Racer After a record breaking season in 2016, The Dollywood Company announced the addition of TailSpin Racer to Dollywood’s Splash Country for 2017. This thrilling new attraction allows up to six guests to race each other on mats through the twists and turns of TailSpin Racer’s unique spiraling tube design. The race begins with riders descending a daring first drop inside intertwined, highspeed AquaTubes. After navigating the wet and wild curves, riders emerge from the translucent tubes on a traditional mat racer-style slide. From there, it’s an all-out race toward the splashdown finish. TailSpin Racer’s slides are longer than a football field in length and stand five stories above the park. The $2 million attraction, which uses ergonomically designed starting blocks, will be located alongside Big River Pavilion near the park entrance. The new slide will join an impressive lineup of water-based attractions—and fun at every splash—making Dollywood’s Splash Country the best place to beat the heat in the Smoky Mountains. –Dollywood Theme Park

olf boasts a rich history that stems from the bounteous grasses of 15th-century Scotland. However, it’s not necessary to travel to faraway lands to experience this game. From the lush green landscapes to the wideopen scenes of nature, Tennessee shares many of the same characteristics as the originating lands of Scotland, and the golf business here is booming, with a wide range of golfing experiences, course designs and unique challenges. Courses in the Smoky Mountain area have taken advantage of the scenic beauty and the natural surroundings to create an experience that will be remembered as much for the scenery as for the challenge. Sloping fairways, extreme elevation changes and even the crisp mountain air seems to allow the ball to travel farther and roll longer. Courses vary to suit everyone, from beginner to professional. The beautiful weather and spectacular mountain scenery is an experience all golfers will enjoy and continue to come back for year after year.

BEER, WINE AND SHINE EVENTS TAKE A TOUR OF THUNDERROAD DISTILLERY

Here’s a list of some great events happening at local wineries, breweries and distilleries this Summer.

Beer There’s nothing quite like a cold beer on a hot summer day. This refreshing drink is the national beverage of summertime. It pairs perfectly with some of our favorite local dishes—imagine delicious Tennessee ribs dripping with sauce, enhanced by a tall, brown ale. And nothing says summer better than a game at Smokies Stadium with salty fries and a frothy, cool brew in your hand. Like many locations throughout the country, the craft beer movement is growing in the Smoky Mountains. The simple ingredients of water, yeast, malted grain and hops are blended in a variety of creative and interesting ways here,

producing a Tennessee Smoky signature taste. The types of brews range from IPAs to lagers to stouts, but the flavors carry a quality that you can’t find anywhere else. Appalachia provides a wonderful selection of locally brewed beers. Many of these breweries even offer all-natural microbrewed beers. The brews are crafted from locally grown ingredients and are handcrafted in small batches to provide the freshest taste possible. The microbrewing process is truly a work of art, and you will not want to leave Appalachia without experiencing what these breweries have to offer.

The Smokies are an ideal location for crafting wine. The fertile soil and mountain climate provide an excellent setting for the art of winemaking. Locally grown grapes are harvested and crushed at these vineyards. Many vineyards use traditional methods, such as aging their wines. Yet, aging these vintages is also part of the art. The oak casks are used to give the wine a distinctly delicious oaky flavor. But you’ll find more than just traditional wines here. Zesty fruit wines, mountain apple wines and even honey wines are available at many area vineyards.

XXX For a true taste of Smoky Mountain wines, it’s best to experience a number of different vineyards. But why go through the trouble of planning your own wine trail when the Rocky Top Wine Trail is available to all who wish to indulge in a wide assortment of the wines of the Smokies. This experience offers a broad selection and consists of five award-winning wineries, as well as a local distillery. This unique opportunity will ensure that you find a type of wine that suits your palate.

This region boasts a rich history of “white whiskey” making. Moonshiners during Prohibition especially loved the mountains as an inconspicuous place to distill their coveted contraband. What was once an undercover operation in the region is now a booming industry, with many different kinds of moonshine and whiskey available to adventurous visitors. The local distilleries craft their authentic spirits from locally harvested corn and ferment and distill the alcohol themselves.

“Today’s generation of ‘shiners have discovered a way to make moonshine legally and continually have much success in the process.”

Today’s generation of ‘shiners have discovered a way to make moonshine legally and continually have much success in the process. They’re manufacturing a product inspired by the recipes passed down for generations of moonshiners in the Smokies—only less potent. Their products are classified as grain neutral spirit or corn whiskey, and although the government has no true moonshine classification, they allow these manufacturers to market the term. Thunder Road Distillery in Kodak keeps the legend of Thunder Road alive. The 1958 film, Thunder Road, perfectly encapsulates the story of Tennessee moonshine, its midnight runners and the importance of family and brotherhood— the heartbeat of the distillery. Distilling for over 50 years, master distiller Dwight, makes moonshine, whiskey and rum. Using cornmeal locally ground at the Old Mill in Pigeon Forge, sugar, yeast and water, their crystal clear, superior moonshine reflects a tradition spanning generations. The Great Smoky Mountains, specifically the Sugarland area within the park boundaries, have seen their fair share of moonshine. From the time the Scotch-Irish ran from their own excise tax and fled to the Appalachians, the settlers have been perfecting the craft of illicit whiskey. The fertile ground used to grow grain and corn, and the abundance of 2017/2018 | Tennessee Smokies | 53

streams and rugged terrain made the Sugarland Valley an ideal place for mountaineers to set up shop. If you do decide to take a sip of moonshine produced in today’s distilleries, don’t expect the dreadful burn that comes after taking even the smallest swig of “white lightning.” What you’ll experience are smooth varieties of ‘shine that are reminiscent of sipping vodka or whiskey, in some cases. The folks at Doc Collier Moonshine believe simple is best. When you visit their shop, try five of their many moonshine varieties including their original recipe and ‘Shined Cherries. Each jar of moonshine at Tennessee XXX Moonshine is hand crafted from start to finish. What sets them apart is that they create small batch, small barrel whisky, focusing on quality as opposed to quantity. Be sure to check out their limited seasonal shines, like the Big Orange Dreamsicle. Smith Creek Moonshine has created 13 unique flavors that pack a powerful punch in every delicious bottle. Flavors vary from Chocolate Silk to Coffee to Apple Pie and more! No matter your preferred craft, the Smokies are sure to provide a tasteful imbibing adventure.

A community worked together to overcome tragedy, proving they’re Mountain Tough!

I

n November of 2016, the Smoky Mountain area experienced unprecedented wildfires that captured the attention of the country. Severe drought had been affecting the area, which, when combined with strong winds, allowed wildfires to sweep down from the National Park into Gatlinburg, Sevier County and Pigeon Forge. When the fire was extinguished, 17,000 acres inside the park had been burned. Outside the Park, predominately residential areas were affected with the greatest loss being permanent and vacation homes and condominiums. Some businesses were also lost. Miraculously, the Gatlinburg Parkway and downtown business district and the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community were preserved. The Chimney Tops 2 wildfire will go down in history as the worst wildfire in the Southeast. Although so many were impacted by loss, the real story is what happened after the fire.

“Statue of jesus only thing left standing after house is burned by tennessee wildfire.” The plight of the mountain community inspired action from across the country. A popular family vacation destination, Gatlinburg is embedded in the memories of millions of visitors making it a sentimental favorite. Immediately, the thoughts and prayers of people turned to the Tennessee Smokies. And many did more than just watch the news on their televisions and computers— compassionate individuals sent supplies and funds to aid the residents in recovery. A huge benefactor in this support was Sevierville native, Dolly Parton. Although she has REPRESENTATION OF ACTUAL STATUE been an internationally recognized entertainer for decades, she has never forgotten her Tennessee roots. Her Dollywood amusement park brings a huge number of jobs to the region, and she regularly visits. Her heart went out to all those who were in so much pain, and she immediately went into action raising funds and using her own money to aid in the recovery and to help those who lost everything. The real road to recovery, though, came from within. The community rallied together and helped one another. Gatlinburg City Manager, Cindy Ogle, noted “Together we will make it through this disaster and be better on the other side of it.” Many people lost everything they had, but the close-knit community looked out for one another. Read the sidebar to learn about a local business who lent a helping hand. It takes more than just fire to destroy mountain folk. The people of the mountains are of hardy stock, and #MountainTough spread all over social media and the internet to describe the enduring spirit this community possesses. Gatlinburg Mayor, Mike Werner, put it best— “We’re going to be okay because we’re mountain tough and have a strong faith in God.” Just twelve days after the wildfires, the Gatlinburg community resumed day-to-day operations and opened themselves to the public once again. This area is a popular tourist destination all year-round, and city officials want visitors to know that the places and attractions you know and love are still here and open for business. Today, the best way to help the people of the Tennessee Smokies is by visiting. The friendly spirit of hospitality remains and this region is all the more beautiful for having persevered through this time of adversity.

The Johnson Family Lends a Helping Hand For 26 years, the Johnson Family of Restaurants has been a staple in the Tennessee Smokies community. Providing delicious foods at such fan favorites as Bennett’s Pit BBQ and Mama’s Farmhouse, their motto is “let our family feed yours.” Kelly Johnson is one of the owners of this family-run business, and she was at the helm when tragedy struck the Tennessee Smokies community in late November of 2016. Wildfire ripped through the mountain communities, affecting so many, especially those living in the town of Gatlinburg. Some businesses were destroyed, such as the Johnson family’s own Alamo Steakhouse. Yet it was the residential homes that took the worst hit. Kelly Johnson had 11 employees lose their homes. They were unprepared for that level of loss. More than just their homes, “they lost all their personal possessions,” Kelly Johnson says. “Family photos—everything.” While facing the destruction of their own business, Johnson knew that they needed to take care of their employees. “After all these years, these people feel like family,” she explains. “We take care of our employees, because without them we are nothing.” At first, they helped with their immediate needs—finding them a place to live, getting them cars. However, those who worked at the Alamo Steakhouse also lost their livelihood. The Johnsons didn’t want to leave their employees without the means to take care of themselves. They continued to pay the salaries of all their Alamo employees throughout the winter. “There’s no jobs in the winter,” explains Kelly. They also promise to hire these employees as soon as the Alamo is reopened or positions become available at other restaurants. The Johnsons have always had pride in their family, their restaurants and their employees, but in the face of tragedy their actions proved that this value is more than just a motto. “When things happen like this,” says Kelly, “you are reminded of the essential good nature of people, and that’s nice. Sometimes it takes something like this to remind you of that.”
