What’s New?
T
he summer of 2012 marks a renaissance of sorts in Historic Downtown Smithfield! Lots of new and exciting projects are coming to fruition all at the same time!... so don’t miss these brand new places to explore and experience! The Church Street Beautification Project has been completed and the main corridor into the Historic District features brick sidewalks, new period street lights and a softly curving streetscape. The “Taste of Smithfield” is the home of the new flagship Smithfield Ham Shop and Café. Tempt your taste buds at this large storefront that offers all the products that Smithfield is famous for!...to eat in or take home! And, the PIGS have arrived! A “herd”
of 8 whimsically painted porcine statuaries have been erected throughout the Historic District. Each is individually painted by a local artist to depict aspects of quintessential Smithfield! The Smithfield Fire House of 1939 has been renovated into an amazing array of shops!... You can’t ride the pole down anymore but the whistle still blows! Plus…the lower Main Street retail corridor is back! Renovations are almost complete for the upper Wharf Hill property that used to house the Smithfield Elks Lodge. If you have never been to the Isle of Wight Museum, or haven’t visited recently, you are in for a treat! The new Civil War Display and Smokehouse exhibit are sure to captivate you! And, that’s not all! With Smithfield’s recent designation as an Arts and Cultural District, there are many new shops boasting everything from cake art to designer consignment goods to primitive furnishings! Whew!...in Smithfield, everything old is new again!

The Jamestown-Scotland/Surry Ferry The ferry crossing, which connects Jamestown to Scotland Wharf in Surry County, takes about 15 minutes. The ferry ride is a great introduction to our area. When you stand at the bow, it’s easy to imagine the excitement felt by our early colonists as they sailed the James River. After departing the ferry continue to the
