monument and the town. I enjoy wine and cheese with several guests and the owners Phil and David Bowditch. (And because you’re likely wondering, yes the Hornsby House Inn B&B owners are related to the musician of the same last name.) Phil’s and David’s grandfather, John William Hornsby, built this home in 1933. The brothers opened it as a bed and breakfast midsummer 2011. The family is closely entwined with the history of the town. One nugget: their mother, Marian Hornsby Bowditch, was instrumental Hornsby House Inn B&B in bringing the current building housing the Watermen’s Museum across the river from Gloucester. It’s an easy walk (or very short drive) down the hill to the waterfront for dinner at Riverwalk Restaurant. I can’t skip my favorite starter, the lobster bisque. My favorite entrées are potato encrusted salmon and the crab cakes, but in the name of research I try seafood baked in parchment. Tender scallops and tilapia combine with tomatoes, spinach and linguini for a tasty and satisfying dish. The chocolate cheesecake with a raspberry sauce is the perfect finish to an excellent meal. I start the next morning with a brisk pre-sunrise walk on the Riverwalk. The sky is just turning pink and the lights sparkle on the dark water. I return to a breakfast of fruit, toast and jam, cheese grits and a sausage egg casserole prepared by Marian Bowditch’s recipe. Guests can eat in their rooms, as I did, or in the elegant dining room, enjoying conversation with other guests. Next stop: The Gallery at York Hall. I stock up on brochures and check out the Sights and Sounds of Yorktown film to get more ideas for touring. (Ideally, I’d begin my visit here but York Hall has limited winter hours.) Volunteer manager Sharon Owen shows me the wide variety of local art—quilts, wooden quilt wall hangings, stuffed animals made from recycled antique quilts, jewelry, paintings, pottery, carvings, music, model boats, children’s books and more. Exhibits change every six to eight weeks. Three spaces offer room for artist demonstrations and book signings. My favorite? Paintings created from dryer lint. “I try to put things in here that no one else will have,” Owen says. Lunch at the Island Café in the Duke of York left me with a dilemma: rockfish sandwich or Jamaican jerk pork barbecue? In the past, I’ve enjoyed pancakes here too. I opted for the barbecue, and

it was as good as my server, Adam, predicted. I’ll plan a return trip for the rockfish sandwich. Then it was off to the Watermen’s Museum for a special tour—since it was the off-season the museum was closed. (Enjoying wine and cheese with director David Niebuhr at Hornsby House gave me an in.) Here, you can watch boats— log canoes, sailing/fishing vessels and Civil War galley gunboats—being built and restored. You can learn more about the history of watermen and longshoremen. If you love old houses, leave time to check out the beautiful molding and burled longleaf pine floors and walls. I ended day two enjoying music in the Cabin Fever Concert Series with Little Bit of Swing/Glen Boswick at the Yorktown Freight Shed. This free concert series with local musicians interacting with the audience is sure to become one of your favorites. Please note: that was my twin (not me) in the conga dance line. Dining, dancing, history, the beach shopping, eating, walking (necessary after all the eating) and friendly people—Yorktown offers something for everyone every season.

orktown is best known for the military victory that signaled an end to the Revolutionary War. But as the nation marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, it’s important to note key events of the Yorktown Campaign during that war. The Yorktown Campaign was the first time tethered balloons were used for surveillance in war with generators in the field instead of natural gas lines, says local historian Dr. Adrian Wheat. Union General Fitz John Porter was aloft in one of those early balloons when the tether broke, sending him and the balloon over enemy lines. Fortunately for Porter, the wind shifted and he figured out how to deflate the balloon enough to land, Wheat says. Over Memorial Day weekend, Yorktown will mark the anniversary of the Civil War. On Saturday May 26, Kevin Knapp—a retired Army officer, professional balloon pilot and Civil War Balloon Corps enthusiast—will share presentations at Yorktown Battlefield on how balloons were used for observation and surveillance by both the North and the South. His presentations will include the complete history of
Yorktown Victory Cente r
balloon operations from their first appearance in 1861, the Peninsula Campaign in 1862, through the end of the Balloon Corps in 1863. Presentations for Union Balloon Corps are scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon, and presentations for Confederate use of Balloons are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday May 26 and 27, Yorktown Civil War weekend at the Yorktown Battlefield will include tactical demonstrations and a Confederate field hospital along with special Memorial Day ceremonies at the Yorktown National and Confederate cemeteries. The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile, an interactive museum on wheels, will be at Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center through the weekend. The HistoryMobile uses state of the art technology and immersive exhibit spaces to present individual stories of the Civil War from the perspective of those who experienced it. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Monday. On Monday May 28, a Memorial Day ceremony at noon includes the posting of colors, historical re-enactors and a guest speaker.
