UNDER CONTRUCTION, BUT OPEN FOR BUSINESS You may notice a bit of construction on Laskin Road, but don’t let it hinder you from using this street as a way to get around. Laskin Road is currently undergoing a road renewal that, in the end, will be prioritized to make life easier for pedestrians and bicyclists. When the project is complete (around April 2013), the makeover will leave Laskin Road with a village-like setting with outdoor cafes and more walkable streets.

Welcome

If you’re visiting the Oceanfront, plan to come back next year and the year after that to see all the exciting changes that have taken place. Don’t worry— it’s still the same Virginia Beach—only better and better each day.

F

rom beach to bay, sand to sidewalk, Virginia Beach is way more than your average beach town. With the world’s longest pleasure beach, an award-winning boardwalk, a cosmopolitan downtown, more than 35 miles of ocean and bay beaches and the most visited nature park in the state, it’s no wonder more than three million people visit this exciting resort town each year. A day in Virginia Beach begins and ends at the Oceanfront. Joggers hit the 3-mile boardwalk in the early morning hours, as the sun rises over the Atlantic. As more and more folks wander out of their hotel rooms to stake a place in the sand, the beach livens up, with colorful beach towels dotting the wide sandy beaches, families on surreys cruising down the boardwalk and friends meeting up for a surf, swim or stroll. With beaches wider than a football field, there’s plenty of room to stretch out on the sand, throw a Frisbee or build a sandcastle or two. The bustling Oceanfront is a flurry of activity throughout the day and into the night, when people flock to the boardwalk for oceanfront dining, live music and family fun. During the summer, Beach Street USA takes over the Oceanfront with nightly entertainment and festivals. Fireworks light up the sky many evenings in July and August, and multiple special events and festivals bring even more activity nearly every weekend. In a city as large and diverse as Virginia Beach, you never know where the day might take you. You could be teeing off at one of the championship courses, kayaking through pristine coastal marshes, swimming with a friendly bottlenose dolphin or learning about the first colonists who set foot on American soil. Venture just an hour away from the beach and you could be riding the world’s tallest, floorless rollercoaster, reliving a Civil War battle or exploring a Colonial village. Virginia Beach and the surrounding region are rich in history, culture, and most importantly, fun. World-class museums and important historic sights complement amusement parks and entertainment venues, while festivals throughout the year celebrate everything from art to Elvis. All this with the beautiful backdrop of an endless ocean and peaceful bay make Virginia Beach one of the finest seaside getaways in the country. This Visitors Guide provides all the essential information for exploring this beautiful oceanfront town. From the eclectic shops to gourmet restaurants, you’ll find all you need to know for the ultimate Virginia Beach vacation.

Enjoy your stay! 5/10/12 10:02 AM

Because of this, it’s easy to separate us from the rest of the vacation locales. Listed below are a few of the accolades associated with our thriving city. It is because of these valuable aspects that visitors choose to vacation here year after year, and we, as a city, will continue to strive to be the best in everything we do. One of the first things we are associated with—and you’ve probably noticed this one already—is our beautiful beach! Virginia Beach was named one of the top 10 beaches in the United States by TripAdvisor. Whether you want to take a stroll across the sand, enjoy a dip in the waves or just relax on the beach and gaze at the horizon, our beach is open and welcoming to all. Aside from the obvious summer fun to be had, our beach is also a popular destination for the off-season when it’s a little less crowded and the temperature is still One of the top 10 bea ches in the U.S. inviting. Named one of America’s favorite boardwalks by the Discovery Channel.

A New Way to GIVE It’s hard to resist giving money to an outstretched hand. But sometimes its hard to give when you’re not sure where the money’s going. In Virginia Beach, there’s a new way to give. Last fall ,the city revamped eight old-fashioned parking meters, painted them bright red, and placed them on the oceanfront boardwalk between 15th and 30th streets. Labeled with the city’s original slogan, “The Power of Change”. These “donation meters” accept nickels, dimes and quarters. The money will go toward long-term solutions and programs for the poor and homeless, such as job training, housing and counseling.

Virginia B e been nam ach has ed as on e of the best c ities to ra ise a family a s well as the best run city in the United Sta tes.

The beauty doesn’t stop at the beach; it runs alongside it as well. The Virginia Beach Boardwalk has been named one of America’s favorite boardwalks by the Discovery Channel and in magazines such as Coastal Living, Southern Living and National Geographic Traveler. It’s a popular place that invites tourists and locals alike to take part in the never-ending excitement. Running about three miles, the boardwalk is one of the most serene—or liveliest— parts of the city, depending on the time of day. When the sun peeps up, the path is filled with couples leisurely strolling, joggers warming up for their morning run and a whole plethora of other activities. The nightlife on the boardwalk is promising as well. The walkway is dotted with some of the most popular seafood restaurants right on the oceanfront, so don’t be surprised if a late evening stroll turns into fruity drinks and a plate of crab legs. The boardwalk is an ideal place to get a workout, but it’s certainly not the only place. As one of the fittest cities in the United States (named by WebMD), Virginia Beach backs up this honor with plenty of parks and playgrounds for children to be active as well as many recreational centers, some complete with indoor pools, weight rooms and gymnasiums. There are also hiking, Check out one of the many running and biking trails such as the Bald playgrounds on the beach. Cypress Trail open year-round. Perhaps it’s because of all the family-oriented activities that 24/7 Wall St., a financial news website, named Virginia Beach the second best city to raise a family in the United States. Due to the military history in and surrounding the city, it is extremely well-known and prosperous. 24/7 Wall St. mentions that the city is in the top 10 lowest for poverty, violent crime, and unemployment rates and also happens to be in the top 10 for median income, health insurance coverage and students completing and graduating high school. Along with being one of the best cities to raise a family, 24/7 Wall St. has also named Virginia Beach as the best run city in the United States, an accolade that we take great pride in achieving. We do our best to live up to our accolades and will continue to work hard to provide a safe, friendly and fun place for people to live and visit. By Diandra Simmons

V

irginia Beach is absolutely one of the most relaxing coastal vacation locales around—but that’s only if you want it to be. To some people, lying on the beach and watching the seagulls fly is time that could be better spent in ways most wouldn’t even dream of. Call them what you will—adventure seekers, adrenaline junkies or just plain daredevils. This type of person looks forward to their vacation not as a time to lie back but a time to let loose, trying stunts that haven’t yet been attempted, daring to step out of the box and letting the adrenaline rush through their veins quicker than you can say, “Geronimo!”

During adventurous childhood summers there was always one roller coaster, one ride, that summoned heaps of elementary school courage. Those never ending moments of contained screaming and stomach lurching until the steel beast had been conquered live in adult memoried infamy. Whether you’re a kid living it for the first time, or an adult whose forgotten—there’s plenty of courage to be summoned at the area’s local amusement parks. Just steps from your hotel you can get dropped, spun, twirled and whirled at the newly opened Atlantic Fun Park on 15th Street. They are also the home to the best view of the ocean on their 100ft. Ferris Wheel! Drive over to Water Country, USA in Williamsburg and the floor will come out from under you on Vanish PointSM! Climb a 75ft. tower, step into a skybox, and you won’t have time to change your mind before plunging down this epic new drop slide. Neighbor to this screamer of water slides is Busch Gardens’ Mäch TowerSM. Standing 246 feet tall, Mäch Tower is the tallest ride in the area and drops you at breath-taking speeds. If that’s not enough, stroll a bit through Busch Gardens and join the bravest of ride warriors and challenge yourself to the 205-foot, 90-degree, 75 mph free fall of the world’s tallest dive coaster Griffon. After conquering these steel beasts, you’ll be ready for a quiet day pool side to bring your blood pressure back down.

Parasailing You know that dream where you’re flying? Well, you can quit dreaming now and make it come true with parasailing. Hop on board a speedboat, and end up about 800 feet in the air with this activity that sweeps you off your feet—literally. This trip is invigorating as you sail above the water and watch the people drift underneath you. Boasting a perfect safety record, Adventure Parasail will let you stay dry or get you wet! They are the only insured company in Virginia Beach able to offer triple flights. Cast your cares to the side and let the exhilarating experience take control.

Jet Skiing Speed, water, and skiing without the athletic effort have made renting jet skis or waverunners one of the beach vacationer’s favorite pasttimes. Look upon the oceanfront from a dolphin’s vantage point and take your newfound speed up for a moment of air. Rudee Inlet Jet Ski has one of the largest riding areas with one square mile between 1st and 14th streets. This adrenaline rush activity is more than a little addicting but safe and fun for the whole family. With more than 20 jet skis available to rent, there’s not usually much of a wait but reservations are accepted.

Mountain Biking and Exploring You can triumph over air and sea, so don’t think land will be any different. Go out and explore Mother Earth at First Landing, also known as Seashore State Park. They have biking, hiking and self-guided tours available for those naturalborn adventurers. Including the fitness trails, First Landing State Park has nine trails available that run about 20 miles all together. The Bald Cypress Trail is said to be the most popular. It crosses over ponds and dunes and is handicapped accessible. Give extreme mountain biking a try on one of the trails. On site they have a store to rent bikes, or feel free to bring your ow.

Sport Fishing Virginia Beach fishing has been called the best saltwater sport fishing along the entire mid-Atlantic coast. With the world famous Chesapeake Bay on the north side, numerous wrecks just off the coast, and the Gulfstream farther offshore, this isn’t sitting on the docks of the bay fishing. This catch is a battle of wills between you and a 100 lb. dinner for 20. These reel screaming rod bending fights aren’t just for the pros, any amateur can at a glance head offshore on a rented charter. Adventure Parasail................................. coupon 32

here’s nothing like the Virginia Beach Oceanfront—the crashing waves, the beautiful beach and boardwalk, the impeccable seafood restaurants and the fabulous shopping are some of the fascinating treasures that make up a Virginia Beach vacation. However, if you do a little exploring and venture beyond the boardwalk, you’ll find that the entire city of Virginia Beach is a thriving community with distinct personality and welcoming charm, one of the many reasons our locals love this area so much. Take some time during your stay to check out some other areas and live like a local—even if it’s just for a little while!

Shore Drive If you want to explore the shore, there’s no place more tranquil and serene than Shore Drive. The Chesapeake Bay Beach off of Shore Drive has spectacular dining and sandy beaches, just milder surf that’s perfect for younger children who may be timid about the water or anyone who’s tired of getting knocked over by waves. Throw a bit of history in your trip by visiting the Adam Thoroughgood House, located just over three miles off of Shore Drive. The historic home was built in the early 1700s and named after Adam Thoroughgood, an indentured servant who became a community leader and a member of the House of Burgesses at Jamestown.

Wake up to the Sunny Side of your day! Where you’ll find delicious American cuisine and everything is served fresh to order.

The home is now listed in the US National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. Standing silent guard at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is the Cape Henry Lighthouse. Both the 1792 original and its 1881 replacement still stand on the Joint Expeditionary Base-Fort Story. The original lighthouse is open for tours and climbing year round. To get to Shore Drive, simply head north on Atlantic Avenue, and keep on driving.

Sandbridge Known as the “Outer Banks of Virginia,” Sandbridge is a peaceful, family-oriented beach consisting of five miles of gorgeous sands. Take a hike around Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, dine at one of the classic seafood eateries, and check out some of the stores around Red Mill Commons. The nightlife here is cool and casual; catch a live band and enjoy a meal and a fruity beverage on the deck of one of the area restaurants. Sandbridge is located south of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront about 17 miles.

Pungo Near Sandbridge is the quaint, rural community of Pungo. Visit the only winery in proximity to the beach—Pungo Ridge Winery crafts blackberry wines and is open seasonally. Pungo is also known for its annual strawberry festival, the site of many pick-your-own fruit farms and roadside fruit and vegetable stands, so stop by one of these charming stations before heading home for a scrumptious souvenir.

Town Center Virginia Beach’s Town Center is the place to see and be seen, especially on the afternoons when live music can be heard in Fountain Plaza and the whole area is bustling with excitement. Catch a comedy show, or watch a live play or performance at some of the various venues before enjoying one of the best meals you’ve ever had at restaurants offering anywhere from Japanese to Chinese to Italian to Irish and many other selections in between. Browse the fine retail shops here to discover the eclectic treasure you’ve been searching for. Best of all, Town Center offers free parking, so don’t worry about running up the meter as you peruse this fabulous area. Travel west on 264, and take Exit 17B on Independence Boulevard toward Pembroke to arrive in Town Center.

Choose from a variety of half-, full-day or even nighttime trips with experienced captains who know the best fishing spots around. Many charters are air conditioned and their staff will provide 30 | www.visitorsguidenetwork.com | 2012/2013

you with all the tackle and gear you’ll need to reel in some prize winners. If fishing isn’t your thing, you’ll definitely enjoy sitting back and relaxing as the head boats return to the dock with the day’s fresh catches (and wondering what might end up on your plate later on). For the nonfisherman, there’s sight seeing, dolphin watching and sunset cruises. Rudee Inlet is also home to several water sports outfitters and is the true hub of water activity in Virginia Beach. You can rent a jet ski and head into the open ocean, right from the inlet, or take the whole family aboard a jet boat or sport boat and enjoy a day’s worth of exciting boating. Rent a kayak and explore peaceful waters or sail the high seas on a luxury sailing yacht. You can go on a dolphin watching excursion in the summer, a whale watching trip in the winter and partake in loads of other trips anytime in between. Rudee Inlet Jet Ski Rentals has been providing a wide range of on-the-water activities since 1985, including jet skis, boats, kayaks and fishing charters. Their 20-foot sport boats are great for families who want to get out and explore the scenic Virginia Beach coast. They also offer jet skis that can fit one, two or three people at a time, as well as the largest riding area in Virginia Beach.

Adventure Parasail will let you soar high above the Oceanfront and watch as the sunbathers become tiny specs on the sand. Fly by yourself or tandem with a friend—you can even specify if you want to dip your feet in the water or not. Of course, after all this adventure, you may have worked up a bit of an appetite. Locals and visitors alike know that Rudee Inlet is known for having some of the best restaurants in Hampton Roads. Enjoy the freshest seafood straight from the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, mouth-watering steaks, towering sandwiches, pastas and much, much more. Each of the restaurants has its own distinct ambiance and provides a fabulous view of the inlet, and many offer great food and happy hour specials regularly. Rockafellers, the local’s favorite, has been serving up delicious and fresh local fare since 1989. People come by foot, bike, car and boat to experience the laid-back marina atmosphere, signature cocktails and a slice of local flavor. Seafood is, of course, always the best option—especially when you can witness the fishermen rolling in with the freshest of catches. The carefree atmosphere, enhanced by the numerous rocking chairs, combined with mouth-watering meals and the Southern hospitality Virginia Beach is known for, has made Rockafeller’s the place to dine for the past two decades. Rudee’s on the Inlet is another favorite among the locals and longtime visitors, and has been delighting taste buds since 1983. Enjoy fresh seafood and steaks inside or out on the deck. The outdoor cabana, complete with rocking tables for the utmost in “relax while you dine” atmosphere, has its own menu of tasty cocktails, a delicious raw bar and mouthwatering appetizers. All throughout the day, whether it’s brunch, lunch or dinner, watch the boats come and go from the bustling marina. Whether you’re looking for adventure on the water or a delicious meal at sunset, Rudee Inlet truly has it all.

THIS IS HAMPTON

Hampton is an extraordinary city in the heart of Coastal Virginia. The 400-year old settlement is multi-faceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. It is an appealing destination that prompts leisure visitors to return for major industry conventions. The cultural landscape of the nation’s oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement in North America is dotted with historic attractions that interpret Hampton’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. On November 1, 2011 President Obama named Fort Monroe a National Historic Monument. Visitors are encouraged to come to the nation’s largest stone fort ever built, cross the moat and see the sites within firsthand. Climb Fort Monroe’s walls and be amazed at the awesome position Fort Monroe has held overlooking the Hampton Roads harbor throughout its history and learn about it personally at The Casemate Museum. Or perhaps you’d like to see Fort Monroe and Fort Wool from the water aboard the Miss Hampton II. The legacy doesn’t stop there: Hampton University’s historic campus leaves one amazed at the timeless significance of the institution founded in 1868. The Hampton History Museum located in Downtown Hampton provides a glimpse the major moments in Hampton history that helped shape our great nation. From the Native American gallery depicting the lifestyle of the Virginia Indians living at Kecoughtan prior to the first settlers’ arrival, to the colonial and Antebellum galleries, you will experience Hampton during a simpler time. The life-like charred ruins reflecting the burning of Hampton in 1861 in the Civil War gallery illuminate the reconstruction of Hampton and how greatly the seafood industry must have impacted Hampton’s post-war economy. The founding of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1917 in Hampton was the precursor of NASA and the founding site of the American space program. Continue your explorations at the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside Digital 3D IMAX Theater, the result of Hampton’s relationship with NASA. to take the controls and experience air and space innovations of the past, present and future. The Riverside 3D IMAX Theater presents digital feature films and documentaries on a five-story screen. Next door, the Hampton Carousel spins visitors year-round on hand-carved horses and chariots. This Hampton treasure built in 1920 by European artisans is enclosed in a weatherprotective pavilion on the downtown waterfront. Nearby, you’ll find the Hampton Maritime Center where the Miss Hampton II departs daily April – October for tours of the Hampton Roads harbor, and the Ocean Eagle for fishing excursions on the Chesapeake Bay. There are many historic churches in downtown Hampton and the surrounding communities. The parish of St. John’s Church, the oldest Anglican parish in North America, was founded in 1610 and celebrated their 400th anniversary along with the city in 2010. You can visit the church sanctuary and hear a recorded introduction. The fascinating cemetery is an amazing adventure in itself, with headstones spanning more than three centuries. The charming streets surrounding St. John’s are lined with small shops, restaurants, art galleries, and parks. The streets come alive with special events from April through October, including the Hampton Street Fest offered on Queen’s Way on Saturday evenings. Citywide events, such as the annual Hampton Jazz Festival, and internationally acclaimed artists draw crowds to Hampton Coliseum and to The American Theatre year-round. You’ll adore the boutique and antique shopping in Downtown Hampton and Phoebus, and the locally-owned dining establishments that receive raves from Hampton residents. National favorites and still more restaurants unique to other parts of Virginia can be found at Peninsula Town Center in the Coliseum Central District. A menu of more than 70 national and regionallyowned shops is presented at Peninsula Town Center, and more than a dozen restaurants, like Bensi, Frank Beamer’s American Grill, and Abuelos, flavor your visit with pleasing variety while “dinner and a movie” has been redefined at Cinebistro to now include upscale dining, feature films, top shelf beverages, bowling, a game room—all complemented by an adult-only policy after 6 p.m. Theme restaurants like NASCAR Sports Grille, Saddle Ridge Rockin’ Country Saloon, and Luckie’s Dueling Pianos can be enjoyed at the Power Plant of Hampton Roads, also within close proximity of concert and meeting venues. Like it spicy? Then Chipotle, bd’s Mongolian, Kenji Fusion, Mary Helen’s and Soya are serving up the cuisine you crave. It’s no secret Virginia and our southern neighbors serve up mouth-watering barbecue. You can experience the best at Q Barbecue and County Grill. And a visit to Hampton is not complete until you savor our decadent Chesapeake Bay seafood. After all, this is where the seafood canning process was perfected. Long known as Crabtown, Hampton’s seafood has been caught, packaged and shipped throughout the world for generations. You can eat your fill at Marker 20, Surfrider, Harpoon Larry’s, Hampton Seafood Kitchen, and Joe’s Crab Shack. The helpful travel counselors at the Hampton Visitor Center are eager to assist

While you’re there pick up a Hampton Visitor Guide, complete with the Hampton Day Pass Value Card, good for special values and discounts at Hampton shops, restaurants and recreation sites. JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT, YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER Living-History Museums Chronicle Nation’s Beginnings A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists in 1607, and the colonial fort. The story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through gallery exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm. The museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call (888) 593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

THE MARINERS’ MUSEUM

The Mariners’ Museum, America’s National Maritime Museum, is one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world. For more than 75 years, The Mariners’ has illustrated the spirit of seafaring adventure, assembling a renowned and strikingly diverse collection of 35,000 maritime artifacts, including figureheads, ship models, decorative arts, historic paintings and small craft from around the world. The remains of one of the most famous ships in history, the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor, have a permanent home in The Mariners’ Museum’s USS Monitor Center. The Wall Street Journal calls the $30 million, 63,500-square-foot facility “An Ironclad Must-See.” Be a part of the action in the high-definition battle theater, walk on the full-scale Monitor replica, see artifacts like the iconic revolving gun turret, experience interactive exhibits and hands-on conservation. The Museum sits on a 550-acre park, the nation’s largest privately maintained park that is free and open to the public. Rolling woodlands, a 167-acre Lake Maury, and five-mile Noland Trail make this a true urban oasis. The Mariners’ Museum is an official site on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, and visitors can take advantage of our interactive backpack program to learn about topics ranging from the history of the park, its plants, and animals, to environmental concerns. Downtown isn’t the only place to find eclectic entrees. A whole host of restaurants dot the streets of Ghent, the historic Freemason district, Ocean View and other areas of the city. Visitors will be surprised that there is much more here than just the typical Southern cuisine. Norfolk has a variety of international offerings, including Cuban, Irish, Indian, Italian, Moroccan, Japanese, Thai and Brazilian. What could be better than pairing food and wine with music? SWIMWEAR TRENDS FOR 2012 By Meg of Meg’s Swimwear

Put your sunglasses on! When you start shopping for your new swimsuit this year you’re going to find that the swimsuits for 2012 are astoundingly BRIGHT! There has never been a better year for color, from rich tropical tones to brilliant fluorescents. You’ll find intense corals (the color of the year), clear aquas and turquoises and beautiful periwinkles and purples. Add a touch of black, white and navy and you’ve got the whole palette of colors for your summer swimsuit for 2012. Now, let’s talk about that swimsuit shopping. Most importantly, choose a shop that has a huge selection of styles and sizes. It increases your odds of finding just the right swimsuit. There are so many options now in choosing your suit. Styles range from twopieces, tankinis and one-pieces with hundreds of variations on each type. Size ranges have never been more vast or accommodating—there truly is a size and a suit for everyone. Most two-piece suits are sold as separates, so it is possible to buy a different size top and bottom according to your needs. Tops even come cup-sized if that’s what you need. While browsing all these options, make sure you ask for help. There’s a lot to see and the salesperson will be able to narrow your choices and make helpful suggestions.

Some of the trends for 2012: • Gorgeous prints in rich colors. These range from geometrics to paisleys to abstracts in subtle neutrals or rich jewel tones. • Bandeau tops. This is basically a suit with no straps although most come with detachable straps. This style is great for no tan lines and is available very plain or with details such as ruching or ruffles. • Speaking of ruffles, they are a big trend for 2012. They can be deep and layered, cascaded down the front of a suit or just used as edging. Usually considered super-girly, ruffles have become much more sophisticated this year. • One-piece suits are hotter than ever because there are so many styles available. They come flirty or conservative, one-shouldered or strapless—any way you want. One of the newest styles is a faux-tankini which is a one-piece made to look like a two-piece tankini. • Matching cover-ups are a must this year. They are available as dresses, skirts or over-shirts in colors that match your suit exactly or in prints that coordinate nicely with your suit. • Stripes are happening this year. You will see wide stripes or pin stripes in either bright fluorescents or in crisp navy and white for a nautical flair. Whatever trend you decide to go for, have fun with your swimsuit shopping. Try on lots of things and get an honest opinion. Find a matching cover-up, head for the beach and don’t forget the sunglasses!

C

oastal Virginia has two main attributes that contribute to its culinary success: First, it’s located in the South (and everyone knows there is nothing better than good, down-home Southern cooking!). Second, it borders the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay (and anybody will tell you that the only way to get really fresh seafood is to be on the coast!). If good seafood is high on your list of priorities, you’ll be pleased to find it on breakfast, lunch and dinner menus throughout the area. Many of our area chefs have created their own delectable entrees using our locally caught grouper, flounder, and tuna. Be sure to check out the menu boards when you arrive at a restaurant for their “fresh catch of the day.” Because shellfish are abundant in this area, you will find many menu items that include shrimp, scallops, oysters, crabmeat, mussels, clam strips, and crab legs. Many restaurants feature a fried “platter” that allows you to choose as many different items as you wish. Also, watch for “buckets” or platters that feature these shellfish steamed and served with drawn butter. You’ll dig in with both hands, cracking open crab legs and oyster shells to find the sweet, succulent meat hidden within! It may be a bit messy, but it’s so much fun! Of course, not everyone is a seafood lover, and local restaurants feature many additional items on their menus including beef, chicken, pork, pasta and sandwiches, and if you’ve never tried North Carolina style barbecue, now is the time. Our Southern neighbor has strong influences in the region, made from pork with a vinegar-plus-seasoning treatment that is just delicious. So, welcome to the beach. I hope you will return again and again to get a taste of all of our great restaurants. Bon Appétit,

COASTAL CUISINE Continued... Virginia Beach is surrounded by water, and much of the fresh catch from the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and their tributaries winds up on restaurant menus. When dining out, look for blackboard specials—these usually indicate what the chef received fresh that day. Some of the most popular local catches include Atlantic mackerel, black sea bass, bluefish, catfish, croaker, flounder, scup, sea trout, shad, Spanish mackerel, spot and striped bass. Another local favorite is rockfish, a fresh catch with a moist texture and subtle flavor profile that can be prepared any number of ways, including fried, broiled and sautéed. Many restaurants have specialty house sauces to accompany the catch.

FRESH CATCH

OYSTERS Oysters are even more American than apple pie: English colonists found these bivalve beauties abundant in the Chesapeake Bay. Native Americans taught early settlers how to catch and prepare oysters, and those methods are still used today. Protected by their thick shell, the oyster meat inside is rich, succulent, earthy and sweet. A lot of folks enjoy oysters on the half shell, freshly shucked and served chilled and raw, with the addition of a wedge of lemon and mignonette or cocktail sauce. Across Virginia Beach, you will find a large selection of raw bars—places that specialize in preparing and serving raw oysters and other seafood. Oysters are also found on menus in other ways, including steamed, smoked and fried, on sandwiches and in soups.

The crab is the king of the Chesapeake Bay, resplendent in a brilliant blue color and, in the case of females, bright red tips on the end of pincers. Crab meat is sweet and succulent and found in many forms served up in Virginia Beach restaurants. Perhaps the most famous way to serve it is in the form of crab cakes—a mixture of crabmeat usually with breadcrumbs, herbs and spices and sometimes mayonnaise, formed into a patty and broiled or fried. A lunchtime favorite treat is a crab cake sandwich, with the delicious crab cake patty nestled in between two pieces of bread and served with tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise.

VB COASTAL CUISINE Hard shell crabs are also served steamed with Old Bay and plated with small mallets to crack open and pick out the sweet meat. Dip the delicious chunks in melted butter for a dining experience that’s out of this world. From the first full moon in May until late summer, soft shell crabs are considered a special delicacy, and they’re found in eateries prepared fried, broiled or sautéed. Out of season, look for good-quality soft shell crabs that have been individually quick-frozen.

WINE In the not so distant past, in a place not so far away from present-day Virginia Beach, a group of Englishmen stepped ashore and began exploring the New World. One of them, Arthur Barlowe, wrote in his diary on July 13, 1584: “ … very sandie and low toward the waters side, but so full of grapes as the very beating and surge of the Sea overflowed them, of which we found such plentie, as well there as in all places else, both on the sand and on the greene soil on the hils, as in the plaines, as well on every little shrubbe, as also climing towards the tops of high Cedars, that I thinke in all the world the like abundance is not to be found … “ Fast forward some 425-plus years and the coast where Barlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh and others came ashore is lined with soaring hotels and timeshares and not great vines of grapes climbing towards the tree tops. But it doesn’t mean the natives here—and guests—don’t love a good wine. Virginia Beach is a wonderful place to visit many months out of the year, but summer is when everything and everyone is in high gear. The resort city is home to great restaurants, entertainment venues, nightlife and places to relax and unwind. Although far from where many folks think of as Virginia wine country, Virginia Beach is an easy drive to three wineries on the Eastern Shore (Bloxom, Chatham and Holly Grove) and three on the Peninsula (New Kent, Saude Creek and Williamsburg.) From mornings exploring Virginia wineries to afternoons of picnics on the beach and evenings of dining out and catching a play or concert, we like to think Virginia Beach is a great getaway for Virginia wine lovers.

Other Local Delicacies PEANUTS Peanuts have been around for 2,000 years, but it wasn’t until the early 1840s that the first commercial peanut crop was planted in Waverly, just northwest of Hampton Roads. Perhaps one thing that more closely aligns Hampton Roads with the peanut more than any other locale is the Planters Peanut Company, which traces its roots to nearby Suffolk, the “Peanut Capital of the World,” as early as 1913.

COUNTRY HAM The first commercial country-cured ham was sold in the late 1700s in Smithfield, and the salty, other-worldly flavor has been sought after ever since. This product distinguishes itself from other ham in the time and method used in the cure. The end result is something rich, dense and extremely flavorful.

We know you’re eager to get out on the water, so make kayaking your first adventure toward eco-exploration. There are plenty of places to rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboat, and there’s nothing as serene as paddling out a ways and getting in touch the beauty of Virginia Beach’s nature. Spend a couple hours kaying through the beautiful Rudee Inlet through Adventure Parasail & Rudee Inlet Jet Ski Company. vacation at the beach is the ultimate way to unwind—you can lounge in the sun, play games with the kids, eat amazing food, and totally forget about all the worries that await you at home. But while you are letting loose, why not take the opportunity to give your body some much needed attention? Many people throw health and fitness out the window when they go on vacation, but it is actually the perfect time to both challenge and pamper your body. Use your free time to get active and jumpstart your fitness routine. Head to a local gym and sweat it out, or try some fun (and calorie-burning!) activities like surfing, biking or kayaking. Afterwards, reward yourself at a Virginia Beach spa with a relaxing massage, body treatment or facial. Try a moisturizing skin treatment to hydrate the skin after long hours in the sun, or get a spa pedicure for sandalready feet. Massages are proven to help relieve stress and clear the mind—definitely vacation musts! Whatever the treatment, your body will thank you. And you’ll be even more ready to enjoy your time in the sun.

Tips Toward A Beautiful Vacation

Photograph Supplied By Thinkstock.com

• Get a spray tan at a local spa here in Virginia Beach, or try one of the many self-tanning lotions on the market. However you fake it, the all-over bronzed look may keep you from spending too many hours in the sun trying to get darker. • Use a waterproof sun block with an SPF of at least 30. (Dermatologists recommend the daily use of sunscreen to prevent skin damage, early aging and skin cancer.) • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside. Pay special attention to the nose, ears, shoulders, tops of the feet and collarbone. • Reapply sunscreen often—at least every 2 hours. And definitely reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. • Try to get some shade sometime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when the UV rays are the strongest and can cause the most damage. Sit under an umbrella, or go grab some lunch to give your skin a break. • Don’t forget about your lips! They are very prone to burning, so apply lip balm with SPF often throughout the day. • Those with thin or thinning hair should pay serious attention to their scalp and tops of their heads. Either wear a hat or apply sunscreen to the scalp. • Longer locks can also be protected from the sun and salty water by applying conditioner before swimming, using a protective hair spray and by wearing a hat. • Wear UV protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and keep yourself from squinting, which causes deeper wrinkles if done excessively. • If you’re spending the day at the pool, always rinse Small weddings & off after swimming. Chlorine dries out the skin and elopement packages can cause nightmares for the hair. • Take extra caution when you are on the beach. Sand and water reflects the sun’s rays increasing your chances of sunburn. 757-321-0348 • After a long day in the sun, apply moisturizer with
