Jim Pile,
I
Photographer And So Much More
t was the February of 1985. I was in the process of selling and compiling my first edition of “TravelHost of Hampton Roads,” a weekly in-room guide for the region’s hotel guests. I was making sales calls one day, which led me to a small ad agency, Fischer-Pile Advertising, in the Hilton Village section of Newport News. That’s when I met Jim Pile. Jim bought in to this new TravelHost concept and signed The Inn Place on as an advertiser for the inaugural issue. As a partner in the agency, Jim was quick to inform me that he was also a professional photographer. I soon signed him to photograph images for clients’ ads. Now, 32 years, hundreds of thousands of miles and millions of photographs later, Jim is retiring. learn man 32 ,hs ,h esre f rd fn dfi nfi roro srs erlYou o elo oc oac rlot erabout eeb eab e veiover s vn is a nyears. p ax peMany xe ruro uo ere orlo plx pE xE of our long-time customers know Jim very well, as srs arb ab re r l w e l o w r o g r g l a c l a o c l o o l w o t w r t u r o u o t a t a r e r e e b e b l a c l a o c lol he has been taking their photos year-in and year-out. But, Jim continuously surprised me with something new that I was learning about him for the first time. Here are a few things you may or may not know: Jim has a master’s degree in Film from Syracuse University. He loves his ,ra,rb ab da dlas lae sg erg aOrangeman rl a al g an g id niu dlc u n lciwhen nsin so n io tlosing. p ito pHis o ta teae otoy tdegree d ya de aR eR basketball, even they are undergraduate in de dir efirsfuso um om afarfuPhilosophy ro uo dn d ns aGettysburg dsa dlas lCollege ad se d e arp ae pre prp fefhech,c ih,s ih ussus isa from inr1967. Jim is an ordained Methodist minister with a Master of Divinity from Drew nen ke ck ih cc ihc Seminary in New Jersey. He occasionally fills the pulpit when needed, teaches Sunday School, sings bass in the choir, helps with Vacation Bible School and acts in numerous dinner theaters raising money for missions. Out of college, Jim was a Peace Corp Volunteer. Since 2000, Jim has been volunteering at KIDZ’NGRIEF, an organization dedicated to helping kids deal with grief and the loss of loved ones. He facilitates the middle school group at Mikey’s Camp. Jim is an accomplished magician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Order of Merlin. Part of his job description at VistaGraphics has required that a new trick be performed at our annual Christmas party and often a bonus trick at our summer sales meeting. He is an accomplished musician on the guitar, drum, saxophone and most any wind instrument you can imagine. He plays piano and violin. He has written close to 100 songs and has his own songbook. Our Christmas parties sometimes take advantage of his musical abilities as well. Jim once confided in me that he had just taken up photography shortly before we met, learning on VistaGraphics’ dime as we depended on him more and more. Looking back, I believe he must have been a fast learner because he delievered beautiful work from the very beginning. On top of everything else, Jim is an accomplished family man with three daughters, two stepdaughters, one stepson, three “in-law” children and 10 grandchildren. They all refer to him as a “Renaissance Man.” I couldn’t agree more. Jim, we’re all going to miss you, and we wish you a happy, healthy and well-deserved retirement.

ewcomers to Virginia Beach automatically assume that our city is just our signature boardwalk lined with hotels, shops and restaurants. Although we love our bustling boardwalk that runs three miles long and connects seaside shopping, great food, plenty of entertainment and miles of beach, that’s not all that makes up this unforgettable beach destination. In fact, the boardwalk lined Resort Area of Virginia Beach is just one of three beaches to choose from while vacationing here. When you prefer to be near all the action at the oceanfront, stick to the Resort Area. Relaxation and nature are yours to explore at Sandbridge Beach. Or keep it calm while enjoying outdoor family fun at the Chesapeake Bay Beach.

exchange students
International college students bring the world to Virginia Beach
A
t home, they study engineering, law, science, business and the arts. In Virginia Beach, they spend unforgettable summers as beach and waterpark attendants, ride operators, waitstaff and ice cream scoopers. They’re the young people you’ll meet on the boardwalk and the beach, at restaurants and hotels, with smiles on their faces and unfamiliar accents you can’t quite place. They are international exchange students participating in the U.S. Department of State’s Summer Work Travel (SWT) program. “These students are future leaders in their home countries, and ambassadors of their culture while they’re here. By living and working in the U.S. for a summer, they make new friends, improve their English and take home a true understanding of what the real America is like,” explains Keri Lowry, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Private Sector Exchanges. Lowery oversees the cultural exchange, a program with over 50 years of history. Hailing from over 60 countries as diverse as Turkey, China, Russia and Ireland, these students get the chance to live and work in seasonal tourist spots all over the country while on summer break from college back home. The students stay in their host communities for about three months, then have the opportunity to travel around the U.S. for one month before heading back to their studies. “Summer Work Travel is a wonderful program because it teaches the international students and us Americans how to communicate with each other—not only in language and cultural terms, but also in business terms,” said Mayor Will Sessoms of Virginia Beach. “These exchange students are a tremendous asset to our local economy. They step up during the summer, when we have a shortage of American employees, and help us to provide top quality service to our guests. And they do a fine job of it.” Mayor Sessoms noted how residents and guests help make the experience these young travelers have—often visiting the U.S. for the first time—a truly memorable one: “The people of Virginia Beach are very welcoming to these fine young people. They show them the true lifestyle and hospitality of an American.” So when you see smiling international faces or hear unfamiliar accents, ask those exchange students where they’re from, what they’re studying in college and how they’re enjoying Virginia Beach. You might learn something new about their country or a word in their language. You may even make a new friend in the process. —Mark Overmann, Vice President of External Affairs, InterExchange
Meet Andrada Bojan from Romania Stepping into Sweet Frog at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, you may encounter a young woman with the biggest smile on her face. This friendly and vivacious worker is Andrada, a 21-year old computer science major from Cluj Napcoa, Romania. Inspired by friends who had done the Summer Work Travel program before her, Andrada chose to come to Virginia Beach because of the beautiful pictures she saw of the ocean and local attractions. Her experience here has been the time of her life—meeting new people (both locals and international), learning local culture and language, as well as gaining a sense of independence. She also had the opportunity to travel to such places as New York and the Grand Canyon. Andrada loved her experience in Virginia Beach. Her favorite part? Eating pancakes for the first time. “I am a big sucker for movies and TV shows,” she explains, “and they were always eating pancakes with maple syrup. And I thought, I have to eat that someday. They are amazing!” z

ust around the corner from the boardwalk is a small marina community overflowing with activity. Rudee Inlet is just a short walk across Pacific Avenue and is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss during your stay in Virginia Beach. To truly experience Rudee Inlet, meander around the docks and watch the fishing and sport boats coming and going. Drool over the irresistible aromas of fresh seafood being prepared at any of the inlet’s famous waterfront restaurants. Ride with the dolphins or soar with the seagulls by trying one of the many water sports adventures. And finally, toast to family and friends as the sun sets on another perfect day in Virginia Beach. Getting to Rudee Inlet A great way to get to Rudee Inlet without stepping foot in the car or on the pedal is to catch the VB Wave—the Hampton Roads Transit Shuttle that encircles Rudee Inlet via Route 30, May 1–September 30. Or get there by foot on the Rudee Inlet Connector Walk. This 10-foot-wide concrete walkway connects Winston Salem Avenue, under the Rudee Inlet Bridge, to the 4th Street parking lot. The walkway ensures the safety of pedestrians and cyclists with a lighted, direct linkage from the Marina district to the Oceanfront. Continued on page 34

Exciting Activities Not to be Missed Rudee Inlet is also home to several water sports outfitters and is the true hub of water activity in Virginia Beach. You can rent a wave runner and head into the open ocean right from the inlet, or take the whole family aboard a jet boat or sport boat, and enjoy a day’s worth of exciting boating. Rent a kayak and explore peaceful waters or sail the high seas on a luxury sailing yacht. You can go on a dolphin watching excursion in the summer, a whale watching trip in the winter and loads of other trips anytime in between. Rudee Inlet Jet Ski Rentals has been providing a wide range of on-the-water activities for nearly 30 years, including jet skis, boats, kayaks and fishing charters. Their 20-foot sport boats fit up to seven people and are great for families who want to get out and explore the scenic Virginia Beach coast. They also offer wave runners that can fit one, two or three people at a time, as well as the largest riding area in Virginia Beach. from the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, mouthwatering steaks, towering sandwiches, pastas and much, much more. Each of the restaurants has its own distinct ambience and provides a fabulous view of the inlet, and many offer great food and happy hour specials regularly. Rockafeller’s, one of the locals’ favorites, has been serving up delicious and fresh fare since 1989. People come by foot, bike, car and boat to experience the laidback marina atmosphere, signature cocktails and a slice of local flavor. Seafood is, of course, always the best option— especially when you can witness the fishermen rolling in with the freshest of catches. The carefree atmosphere, enhanced by the numerous rocking chairs, combined with mouthwatering meals and the Southern hospitality Virginia Beach is known for, has made Rockafeller’s the place to dine for over two decades. Rudee’s on the Inlet Restaurant & Cabana Bar is another favorite among the locals and longtime visitors and has been delighting taste buds since 1983. Enjoy fresh seafood and steaks inside or out on the deck. The outdoor cabana, complete with seasonal fire pit tables and unique gliding tables overlooking the water, has its own menu of tasty cocktails, a delicious raw bar and mouthwatering appetizers. All throughout the day, whether it’s brunch, lunch or dinner, watch the boats come and go from the bustling marina. Whether you’re looking for adventure on the water or a delicious meal at sunset, Rudee Inlet truly has it all. z

ESTLED WITHIN THE OCEANFRONT AREA IS VIRGINIA BEACH’S OWN CULTURAL ARTS ENCLAVE— THE VIBE CREATIVE DISTRICT. A hub for artists and spirits, roasters and restaurants, workouts and wares, museums and more, the ViBe is where our creative businesses have set up shop to share their passion and inspire a sense of discovery in locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re here for a few days or here for good, there’s always something special going on. Weekly and monthly events like the Old Beach Farmer’s Market and Second Saturdays give a taste of the town and bring entertainment and community art projects you can be a part of.
ABOUT THE VIBE ViBe Creative District was established by a group of concerned individuals and local businesses to attract creative industries to a section of the Virginia Beach oceanfront area that desperately needed revitalizing. In 2008, the Old Beach Farmers’ Market was established by volunteers to create a resort area farmers’ market selling healthy, local food to residents and visitors. Promoting family farms, watermen and wineries, as well as connecting local sources to chefs, restaurateurs and the public, this old-fashioned kind of shopping revived the historic Old Beach District. These activities morphed into the ViBe Creative District, which incubated small vendors into brick and mortar stand-alone businesses and a collection of local artistic businesses. Then, in 2009, the Commonwealth of Virginia voted on legislation for arts districts. Andrew Fine, president of The Runnymede Corporation, and Laura Wood Habr, co-owner of Croc’s 19th Street Bistro, began collaborating in 2011 on their vision to reinvigorate this once historic and now elapsed area. They began to organize with city staff and council members, local artists and businesses. Both having businesses in this district and a shared passion for undertaking philanthropic projects, they created an organization to help guide the District to work with the City and a revolving loan program to assist budding creatives moving into the District. And in 2015, the ViBe District Virginia Beach was officially born. The City of Virginia Beach established the boundary of the District and declared it “an arts and cultural district and technology zone.” The ViBe Creative District’s purpose is to serve as a vibrant center for the arts, culture and technology, and to support artists, technical and creative businesses to help them flourish and crosspollinate. The intent is to foster creativity 38 |

where artisans live and work. It also serves to provide an opportunity for a sense of discovery for visitors and residents, enhance the quality of life for citizens and stimulate economic development and real estate values. THE FACE OF VIBE The ViBe Creative District is revitalizing an area of Virginia Beach that’s been too long forgotten. Businesses that have made their home in the ViBe are as colorful and creative as the 24 public art murals that now decorate the fence line of 18th Street Parklet. And in 2016, nine new businesses opened in the District.
Since ViBe is an arts district, what would the area be without incredible art! The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, or MOCA, exhibits some of the most significant and impactful art of our time, offering a diversity seldom found in the arts community. These modern pieces offer insight into the age we live in. ViBe also houses smaller studios, like The Artists Gallery. This location is an artists’ cooperative, managed by the creative tenants themselves. For almost 30 years, the gallery has been showcasing original works by local and regional artists. However, the creativity extends beyond the visual into the palatable. Creative

restauranteurs have anchored themselves within the District, offering exciting dining and imbibing experiences. ViBe has become a mecca for local foodies. Bad Ass Coffee and other coffee roasters have made the District a go-to destination for some of the best coffee in Virginia Beach. The area is buzzing with locals and visitors dying to try craft beers, incredible spirits and delicious cocktails. Chesapeake Bay Distillery creates incredible spirits, with the craftsmanship you’d expect from a ViBe resident. For daytime dining, Commune has a seasonally rotating menu which offers delectable farm-to-table fare. As the sun sets, Commune’s neighbor, Esoteric, will serve all your desires for craft beer and eclectic dining. ViBe also contains mainstays you’ll recognize, like Zero’s Subs. Looking for a good, old-fashioned, local tradition? Mary’s Restaurant has been serving the Beach for over 40 years, offering sumptuous breakfast and lunch dining. Yet the variety of businesses is not limited to arts and dining. You can find everything from antiques to fine jewelry at Superior Pawn. Flower shops and custom items, architects and advertising, Pilates and crossfit—ViBe is bringing diversity and vitality to the Oceanfront. GO BEYOND THE BOARDWALK. CREATE THE VIBE. —Kate Pittman, Executive Director of the ViBe Creative District & Laura Habr, Owner of Croc’s

ust 20 miles from the Oceanfront, a wild day of fun awaits you at the Virginia Zoo. Located in Norfolk, this beautifully manicured, 53-acre park provides an exciting escape from the real-world hustle and invites you to discover more than 500 animals, explore four continents, eight gardens and experience a world of wonder. Upon entering the Zoo you’ll first, notice the cascading waterfalls overlooking views of scenic exhibits, vibrant foliage and a vast array of exotic animals hailing from dozens of Asian countries in Asia–Trail of the Tiger. Come see your favorite red panda napping, watch the siamang family swing rope-to-rope and the tigers splashing in their pool and so much more! Next, venture to the Africa–Okavango Delta, home to a spectacular collection of savannah-like landscapes and impressive creatures, big and small. Come face-to-face with a giraffe on the boardwalk or meet the Zoo’s newest members, white rhinos. Spot the lions, tortoises, cheetahs and many more who can be found here all year round. Take a stroll through the outback and meet some of the coolest animals from the Australian continent! Walk along the pathway through the exhibit and experience animals from the land down under in an immersive and up-close way. Watch the kangaroo basking in the sun, wallabies and their joeys venturing around, emus foraging for snacks and the cassowaries showing off their unique personalities! The ZooFarm is unlike any farm you’ve ever experienced. Farm animals, as well as exotic creatures from all over the world can be found here. And it isn’t just for kids! Moo with the cows, feel the woolly fur of a sheep or the coarse hair of a pig, check out what’s inside the rodent barn, and during the summer, brush your favorite goats in the goat yard! Be sure to be cautious, these animals love nibbling on just about anything, including fingers and toes! When you need a break from your actionpacked prowl, climb aboard the Zoo Train for a fun and informative journey around the Zoo. Tame those ferocious appetites with a bite to eat at the African Village Café. If you’re looking for live entertainment, the Zoo has that too! Check the robust calendar of events that range from outdoor concerts on the lawn, date nights, themed-education days, animal birthday parties and other one-of-a-kind opportunities you can only have at the Zoo. The Virginia Zoo has been a cornerstone of this region for more than a hundred years. Opening in 1901 with just 200 animals, the Zoo now boasts more than 150 species, which includes 500 animals. In the past century, the Zoo’s contribution to conservation and education has grown immensely, as it helps to save some of the world’s most threatened wildlife species from extinction. The Virginia Zoo works hard to manage its animal populations locally, but also to help save animals in the wild. Since 2010, the Zoo has increased its contribution to field conservation by more than 7,500 percent, which started by supporting three programs, to now 25 programs. Some of these new programs have been initiated by Virginia Zoo staff from concept and project design, to successful field programs making a measurable difference to the survival of animals. Getting to the Virginia Zoo is an easy 25-minute drive along the interstate from the oceanfront. The setback location off of Granby Street provides a quiet and serene atmosphere, and best of all, parking is always free. No matter what your passion—science, animal health, up-close encounters or just a cute fuzzy face— there’s something for everyone at the Virginia Zoo. For more information about the Virginia Zoo, visit VirginiaZoo.org or call 757-441-2374. Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on major winter holidays. z

A diversity of flavors and dining experiences in Virginia Beach
L
ocal Virginia Beachers are an eclectic crew. This area seems to draw people from all over the world, and the diversity is reflected in our cuisine. Being a beach community, we’re well known for our seafood which appears on many local tables straight from the fishermen’s boats. We also have local farms producing fresh greens, vibrant veggies and sumptuous berries—we even have a festival that celebrates our famed strawberries. These fresh ingredients appear in many area restaurants, especially since the farm-to-table movement is thriving here. Yet beyond what is locally produced in our area, our multi-ethnic residents bring an extra flair to our local cuisine. Immigrants from India, Greece, Italy, Vietnam, China and beyond bring their own unique cuisines to the Virginia Beach food scene, blending their tastes with local flavors to create a delicious fusion. The type of dining is as diverse as the flavors. From family-friendly and casual to fine dining and romantic—you can find an establishment for every occasion. Many of these locations are found right at the oceanfront or further north along Shore Drive (also known locally as “Restaurant Row”). But if you’re willing to stray further inland, you won’t be sorry. From Virginia Beach’s Town Center to other smaller neighborhoods, area eateries are worth the short drive to get there. So be sure to explore the cuisine scene while visiting Virginia Beach. With so many options, you may be at a loss where to begin. Don’t fret! Here are some types of establishments you’ll find in our neck of the coast.
Breakfast Nooks
We start with the most important meal of the day. Everyone has their own way to do breakfast, and the breakfast nooks in Virginia Beach cater to every taste. Don’t hit up a drive through—take some time out to enjoy this oft looked over meal. Looking for a traditional, decadent breakfast with stacks of fluffy pancakes or waffles dripping with syrup? You’re in luck! From mom and pop joints, to more established eateries, what better way to start your vacation then indulging in a huge breakfast platter. Looking for something lighter? Organic, farm-totable restaurants serve some of the tastiest—and healthiest—fare. Imagine a sumptuous rice bowl, filled with locally grown root veggies, seasoned perfectly, and topped with an over-easy egg. Or a

From the Farm
Speaking of farm-to-table—Virginia Beach is making huge strides in this movement, and it is thriving here. Local fare is the main attraction at these locations. Chefs work with area farms incorporating an assortment of local greens in tossed salads or using juicy berries in decadent desserts. You can even find homemade bread from neighboring bakeries being served in restaurants. Even the meats are starting to be locally sourced from other, nearby Virginia communities. Partake in juicy pork or sumptuous chicken with the happy knowledge that you are supporting smaller producers. These places are influencing the way big businesses produce and source their ingredients, looking to a healthier, more natural approach. You’ll also find that these local eateries engender a sense of community, making meals more than just food—they become a social event.

We now move from farm-to-table to tideto-table. With the Atlantic Ocean on our doorstep, as well as the Chesapeake Bay and a number of other waterways in our region, the supply of seafood we produce locally is bountiful. Our seafood restaurants draw visitors from all over and many menu items are caught that morning, prepared by restaurants that day and served on your plate that night. Area businesses are taking huge strides in encouraging sustainable seafood choices. Our local Sensible Seafood program promotes a healthy marine environment and strives to protect local marine life as well as our bays and shoreline. Area restaurants serve favorites like tuna, tautog and rockfish, prepared in a variety of creative ways—pan-seared, steamed, blackened and more. Oysters are always a fan favorite, whether served raw or prepared in a delicious dish. There’s one item that’s always kept in stock—blue crabs. These gems of the sea can be prepared in a variety of different ways, and you can partake in all of them here. If you’re looking to make your own seafood dish, visit a local fish market to find the freshest seafood proteins straight from the boat.
Farmer’s Markets
You can find a variety of markets and fresh produce stalls throughout Virginia Beach. If you take a drive down Sandbridge Road, you’ll encounter a number of small produce stalls set up, full of the finest local produce. Or you can head to Pungo, Virginia Beach’s own farming community. Here you’ll encounter stretches of farmland with markets selling fresh greens and fruits on every corner. If you’re here during strawberry season, you can pick these sweet, summer fruits yourself and purchase them by the bucket. Farmer’s Markets continue to gain in popularity year after year. Weekly markets popup in some of our busiest areas. Every Saturday morning all summer long, the Old Beach Farmers Market appears just blocks from the boardwalk. From corn to asparagus, tomatoes and cucumbers, fill your baskets to your heart’s content. Or, if you want to add a little groove to your market experience, head to the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach Town Center for Ynot Wednesdays. Every Wednesday from 5–9 p.m. features live music as well as a farmer’s market featuring local producers.
Picnic Time
Picnicking in Virginia Beach is as easy as pie, especially after visiting one of our local markets or grocery stores. Pack up your fresh grub and head over to one of our city or state parks. These locations offer beautiful water views or woodland marshes, and convenient picnic tables and shelters. If you’d rather stay at the beach, grab your towels or a blanket and lay them out right on the sand. Or take the winding road down to Sandbridge Beach. Set your meal up right on the sand, or if you don’t want to risk a sandy sandwich, nearby shelters at Little Island Park contain picnic shelters and some much-appreciated shade.

Family Friendly
After a day at the beach, the kids may be a little tired and cranky. You never have to be embarrassed about bringing your rambunctious crew to our area’s family-friendly restaurants—they cater to all ages! Oceanfront pizza shops feature fun themes and delicious pies. Some even have arcades or kid-friendly attractions right in house. Even our famed seafood restaurants often have kid-friendly items on the menu. Many locations even offer kids menus, with child-friendly portions and wallet-friendly prices.
Authentic Indian Fare With A Unique Flair
Romantic Restaurant
A romantic getaway to Virginia Beach has so much to offer. The expansive ocean is the perfect backdrop for a perfect night out with the one you love. Musicians line the boardwalk every evening, all summer long. Sip cocktails as the stars come out above the shore. Or you can enjoy some fine dining as you watch the sun set quietly over the Chesapeake Bay. While indoor seating is always an option, many restaurants offer outdoor seating on beautiful decks or patios. If there’s a chill in the air, some restaurants feature fire pits so you can snuggle close to the one you love as you watch the embers glow. Many locations are open late, so don’t let your romantic evening out end early.
Go Upscale and Splurge
From the finest seafood around to epicurean adventures, Virginia Beach’s upscale dining scene is exploding with creativity and delectable delights. Although you may not be able to eat at these locations every day, it’s worth saving up to experience one of these incredible eateries. These restaurants range in style from seafood to Asian to American fusion and beyond. A number of locations are found right at the oceanfront, but nearby Shore Drive, known as “Restaurant Row,” features some of the best dining in Virginia Beach. Fine dining is scattered throughout the city, but the cosmopolitan Hilltop area or our lively Town Center also possess some not-to-be-missed locations.

In certain areas of Virginia Beach, the sound can be almost deafening. If this is your first visit to the area you may be perplexed or even concerned by the turbulent sound. Meet Two Local Military Families
V
irginia Beach and nearby Norfolk have a huge military presence. Although a life in the military is filled with excitement for our brave servicemen and women, military families experience a mix of emotions—joy, pride and many challenges. Frantz Bien-Aime joined the Navy in 2009. He and his wife and children moved around to a variety of places—Florida, Texas and Norfolk. They recently were stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. Currently Frantz is a lieutenant flying C2 aircraft. Hatler Riddle, is a Chief Warrant officer who’s been in the Navy for 20 years. He and his wife, Shannon, met while they both were stationed in Guam, she in the Air Force. After Guam, they moved to San Diego, then Virginia Beach and on to Rhode Island. Because of their love of the area, they n-Aime Frantz Bie fought to get stationed back in Virginia Beach. Both families love their experience with the military and the pride and excitement that come along with it. Yet with homes and children on the home front, wives Michelle and Shannon both struggle with the long deployments that send their husbands out for months at a time. What helps is the bond between military families—a community that understands and shares the same struggles and triumphs. They love the friendly people of Virginia Beach and the pride the region has for their local military. z Children of the families featured above are on the summer cover of the Virginia Beach Visitors Guide.
