Hurstville Golf Club Inc. Objectives of the Club 

To encourage participation in the game of golf and enhance the general wellbeing of its members.



To provide opportunities, through regular competitions, for the participation of members and the improvement of their skills and capabilities.



To abide by the rules and regulations of the International governing bodies of Golf, and respective Australian, NSW, and Regional affiliated associations.



To make and prescribe rules to be observed by members and visitors in regulation of conduct on, and use of the facilities of the Club and the privileges of membership.



To be a positive influence on the local community.

President’s Report This year the club experienced a decrease in membership renewals for the first time. This being largely due to the exit of a significant number of non-playing members. This will have limited impact to the clubs bottom line as new applications have exceeded previous years demand. The club continues to grow.

The club continues to work with Hurstville City Council to improve the course with the watering project making significant improvements to playing conditions. Work has commenced on the redevelopment of the 17th green and, once the club meeting room as been completed, we will again look to direct further funds towards other improvement projects.

The construction of the club meeting room is still awaiting final approval from Hurstville City Council before seeking tenders. The Club has sufficient funds to undertake development but is seeking a government development grant to assist with the overall cost. If granted this will allow the club to direct additional financial support to future course improvement projects. We anticipate construction will commence before the end of the year.

At the last AGM the club was asked to implement an on-line tee booking facility.

Upon investigation it was found that this facility could not be implemented as a stand-alone feature and would require the replacement of the existing competition and timesheet system. A new system would also result in considerable new ongoing costs to the club. For these reasons the committee was required to conduct considerable research into a number of options to ensure we achieved the best financial outcomes for the club. We are pleased to advise that a system has been selected and an implementation project is currently under way. Initial implementation date is scheduled for the 29th September.

Our occupancy arrangement with Hurstville City Council (MOU) remains in place for a further 18 months with an agreed fixed fee of $40,000.00. The club however has indicated to Council it would prefer at the end of that period to operate on a more commercial basis structured around membership numbers and perhaps usage rates.

I would like to thank all the staff who work at the course from Barry Sullivan and the greens staff to Stewart and the Bluefit staff.

We appreciate their efforts in supporting our club and providing facilities for our members. I would also like to thank the members of the General Committee and the various sub-committees. These volunteers all give up their time to make our club run and our club would not exist without their efforts.

Vale During the year we were sadden to lose a number of members.

I apologise if I have missed any one from this list. Sometimes the family prefer to remain private and we don’t hear about members we have lost.

Captain’s Report Our member playing numbers have bounced back to pre-course improvement levels.

Saturdays are around the 150 level and although Tuesday’s numbers are slightly down there has been a steady growth in both Thursday and Friday’s numbers. We have introduced a competition, every 3rd Sunday and we are looking to introducing a 9 hole Sunday competition during the daylight saving period.

Annika must have some ice in her veins because she chipped next to the pin for a gimme, while her opponent couldn’t match her on the green.

We are very proud of this team and also grateful to Martin Johnson and all the parents who helped make this special achievement happen.

This year’s major Club Championships have been put back until Oct/Nov but some other major Championships have been completed.

Our Division 1 Mid Week H’cap winners were Don Haggart/ Barry Saba, Division 1 Scratch winner was David Croot, Division 2 Mid Week H’cap winner was David Moody, the Division 2 Scratch winner was Bob Drake and the Ladies Mid Week winner was Sue Rooney.

This year’s Matchplay was won by Bob Markham who defeated Danny Cooper in a close match.

Both the Foursome Championship Handicap and Scratch winners were Khristian Kerrigan and Matthew Cox. The winners of the Jessie and Bruce Hancock Trophy for the Mixed Fourball were Prescila Keogh and Adem Long.

Congratulations to the Hurstville Junior Girls who are the winners of the 2015 Girls Encourage Shield. After a strong performance in the preliminary rounds, the team played an older and more experienced team from Avondale Golf Club in a nail-biter of a final. The girls appeared to have the match sown up but a late charge from Avondale squared things up to 2-2 at the end. This saw the number one, Annika, head back out to play sudden death.

Our Major Pennants, which was managed by Bob Hill along with Todd Shaw and with all players regular members, were extremely competitive with the results coming down to the last round.

The Mixed Pennants team has gone from strength to strength with a terrific result in 2015. The team won all their home games and scored an elusive win away from home against Asquith. We finished first in our pool and progressed to the quarter finals.

Unfortunately this is where the party ended with a loss to Warringah. Once again Peter Allam did an outstanding job managing this team.

The Warren and Gibson Shields have just been completed. They were managed by Daryl Moss and Lloyd Piper respectively and it was great to see that both teams were well patronized. Both teams had two wins away from home displaying our competitiveness against well established clubs, Woolooware, The Coast and Beverly Page 3

Captain’s Report Park. Unfortunately we were very narrowly defeated by The Coast to progress to the next round.

The 2015 Women’s Interclub Pennants had good representation from the lady members.

This year’s competition was very close and the final result was determined by a count back of reserve games. The Hurstville Ladies had a creditable result finishing in the middle of the competition with Kogarah taking the final honours.

So far this year we have had two teams qualify for the State Finals for the KENO NSW Mixed Fourball Championship and the NSW Men's Fourball Championship.

Congratulations to Janet and Peter Allam as well as Gary Holt and Steven Hennessey who qualified to play in the respective finals at Bonville Golf Resort.

Nelly Falloon and Helen Sollazzo will play in the Metropolitan Play Offs in October for the NSW Women's Fourball Championship and Janet Lisle will complete in the Metropolitan Play Offs for the Gold Division of the GolfNSW Women's Medal Competition at Penrith Golf Club in December. We wish these ladies all the best for their upcoming matches.

The running of our competitions requires a great amount of input in both setting up and closing our competitions. I would like to thank the fellow members of the match committee Mark Ruiz, Ken Hawkins, Ron Hyland and as well as Gary Holt and Jeff Fairbairn who have done the Friday bookings.

A big thank you must go to Stewart and his Pro Shop staff for the assistance they have provided to the committee and to the members.

Very importantly I would like to thank Barrie Sullivan and his team for their cooperation and their great efforts in maintaining and improving our course with comparatively limited resources. Without Barrie’s assistance and cooperation in many areas our golf club would not be able function in the manner it does.

I believe we should be proud of our achievements as a club over the last 10 years and we are continuing to grow and improve in all areas. The new booking and competition system will be introduced at the end of September which will mean that Hurstville Golf Club is again moving forward and I look forward to your continued support.

Treasurer’s Report It is my pleasure to present the Financial Statements of the Club for the 12 months to 30 June 2015.

Membership fees reduced by a net $13,800 (approx.) or 9.3% to $134,423 as the result of the discount on membership renewals last year acknowledging the course disruption period.

We did have strong growth in new memberships which offset a large part of the discounts.

All Provisions and Unclaimed Prizes are fully funded by cash at Bank.

Our cash position as at 30 June 2015, after covering all liabilities and provisions, is the Equity as mentioned above, i.e. approximately $83,000.

Almost 96% of the competition fees were returned as prizes after allowing for GST. After making additional provisions of $48,000, operating activities and nonoperating expenses for the year resulted in a nominal Net Profit of $960 which, added to the Retained Profits carried forward from previous years, leaves our Club with total Equity of $83,214 as at 30 June 2015.

7. Affiliation Fees $26,373 (+$1,293) This is our affiliation fee with Golf NSW and includes the premium for Public Risk Insurance.

The fee was calculated on membership numbers as at 30/6/2014 as per Golf NSW requirements.

8. Competitions $8,027 (+$3,377) Represents the various Pennant competitions entered into by Hurstville Golf Club during the year.

Also includes our Junior Opportunity Programme and the Eagle Nest prizes.

The increase in this category reflects (a) Warren & Gibson Shield. We didn’t host the event in 2013/2014 due to the course disruptions, therefore nil expenditure in that year and (b) a one-off Marketing signage for the Junior Development Programme. Clearly that is not a “Competitions” expense, but for consistency that is where we account for the Junior costs.

10. Occupancy Fee $30,000 Under our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hurstville City Council we paid Council $30,000 (net of GST) in the 2014/2015 financial year. This payment secures our guaranteed tee times.

This MOU expired on 31 December 2014. Although not yet signed, agreement has been reached with Council for the new MOU. That will cover the period 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2016. Amount for the 18 months will be $40,000.

12. Non Operating Expenditure $Nil (- $11,818) In terms of our Agreement with Hurstville City Council, our annual surplus Operating Profit is passed over to Council for future Course improvements.

In both 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 our surplus funds were nominal (after end of year adjustments) therefore no funds were paid to Council.

That said we did pay $22,000 (including GST) towards the 14th Tee works.
