PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to the 39th Annual Castro Street Fair! On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are so glad you can join us. This year, the Castro Street Fair is honoring a favorite tradition of Americana: the County Fair. I remember, when I was a kid, counting down the days until my local fair. The food, the attractions, and the crowds: it all brought a big smile to my face. Now that I am grown, I am so proud to be a part of the team that brings an annual celebration to the most welcoming and exciting neighborhood in our beautiful city by the bay. The county fair is a tradition for a number of reasons, as is the Castro Street Fair. The heart of the matter is bringing neighbors and friends together and celebrating the community that we’ve all built together. Our neighbors, the residents and businesses of the Castro, are instrumental to the Fair -- thank you for being such gracious hosts year after year. Our friends are the valiant, wonderful volunteers who are provided by over twenty nonprofit organizations. These organizations, our beneficiary partners, are vital to the thriving pulse of the city. The Castro Street Fair is thrilled to continue our tradition of providing essential support to their operations: the donations collected at the gates go right back to our beneficiaries. One of my favorite memories of the fair was going to all the booths: quilts, livestock, toys; I was eager to see everything. The same goes for every year at our Street Fair. Hundreds of vendors are displaying the fruits of their labor; it’s your chance to purchase that something special or learn something new. We’re pleased as pie to also present the inspiring talents of the Artists’ Guild, and we are so grateful for the support of our local businesses. The Fair is also about fun: be sure to check out the great entertainment at our Main Stage and Red Rock Stage. The country-western dance area is bound to be stompin’ this year, as always, and if a more thumping beat is your thing, the dance area has great local DJ talent. Then, at World of Wonderment, you can check out some of the creativity and whimsy that makes the Castro so perfectly unique. Finally, a celebration is best savored surrounded by those closest to you: our families. In the Castro, many of us hold our chosen families near and dear. In my case, I am so blessed to be a part of a very special family -- the Board of Directors works hard throughout the year to make the Castro Street Fair the safest and most enjoyable it can be. And on one amazing day every year, our little family grows to over fifty thousand, when you join us in our neighborhood. Thank you for being a part of our family! Relax, enjoy, and have a great fair!

Fred Lopez - President, Board of Directors

2012 BENEFICIARIES The Castro Street Fair is a community celebration that also raises a significant amount of money for local non-profits. Every year we support numerous local non-profit organizations, thanks entirely to the generosity of our fairgoers. Your donations at our entry gates go directly to supporting the Fair and our benefitting organizations. Each year these groups count on your support to help them continue providing services and support to our community. In addition, when you make a donation at the gate we will give you sticker that entitles you to $1 off every cocktail you purchase at one of our Official Beverage Booths. Proceeds from the beverage booths are shared with our beneficiaries as well. We are happy to be supporting the following organizations this year: The 15 Association AIDS Emergency Fund/ Breast Cancer Emergency Fund AIDS Housing Alliance SF AIDS Legal Referral Panel Asian & Pacific Islander (API) Wellness Center Bay Positives Bears of San Francisco Castro/Eureka Valley Neighborhood Association Castro Community on Patrol Castro Country Club Castro Lions Club Charities The Family Link Golden State Gay Rodeo Bay Area Chapter Haight Ashbury Community Nursery School

HOSTED BY

CASEY LEY

CASEY LEY • Back for the second year in a row is Casey Ley, to host the Market Street Stage. Casey is a very gay stand up comic who lives in San Francisco. That tired cliche aside, he’s an original thinker whose jokes have been called “profoundly hilarious”; and his wit “lusty and erudite”- MSN.com. He’s earned his comedy chops in California’s biggest clubs and as host of The Morning Show on Pirate Cat Radio. His comedy has been featured in SFSketchfest for four years running and in Rooftop Comedy’s Out Loud Comedy & Art Festival. Check out his hilarious monthly show and party, This Feels Wrong, at Rebel Bar. TWITTER.COM/CASEYWLEY LE VICE • Le Vice is an indie hip-hop and R&B band that’s really an urban-indie-rock-

electro-funk-hip-hop-pop band. With as much swag as Li’l B but the talent of highly paid session musicians, LV is on track to be the coolest new band in the business. They were recently coined one of the Bay’s “Bands on the Rise in 2012” by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Their large sound includes throwback ‘80s synthesizers, Rick James bass lines, angular guitar licks, and 808 drums. This is topped off with front woman Alex Lee’s hip-hop swagger and soulful singing. The result is part throwback and part futuristic. LV’s sound refuses to fit into any one genre, but instead seems to borrow from all genres, leaving them with a sound that literally has something for everyone who listens. LEVICEMUSIC.COM

THE ETHEL MERMAN EXPERIENCE • She’s back! The Broadway diva with the big voice and big hair returns to the Castro Fair with a rockin’ sound that’s hotter than ever and she can’t wait for the show to begin! Featuring Eddie James on bass, Boom Boom

ROOSEVELT RADIO • Roosevelt Radio’s high-energy indie rock defines the cutting edge of the San Francisco indie scene. The five-piece group formed out of Berkeley in early 2010, and they have since donned their suit jackets, megaphones, and vintage gear to turn heads and drop jaws at the top indie venues in the Bay Area and beyond. “Already inviting comparison to acts like The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, and maybe a dash of Stars. They show a knack for wonderfully punchy and melodic pop rock gems that demand you sing, hum, tap, strum and/or shuffle along to their infectiously melodious guy(s)-supported-by-girl vocals.” - San Jose Examiner. Roosevelt Radio is indie rock without the hipster. ROOSEVELTRADIO.COM FRENCH CASSETTES •

French Cassettes is a San Francisco based quartet, originally from the small town of Ripon, California. They have been turning heads at every show since they all met in high school in 2006. With an effective blend of influences they create indie pop tunes that will not only make you move, but have you humming the chorus the next day. Over the years they have been successfully making a name for themselves; they were one of four finalists in a national Myspace “Battle of the Bands” contest, as well as first place finishers in the Hayward “Battle of the Bands” and the Sacramento “State Battle of the Bands.” FACEBOOK.COM/ FRENCHCASSETTES

His videos have been called “compulsively watchable” by The Advocate, and featured on EW’s Popwatch, PerezHilton.com, Jezebel.com, the New York Times, New York Post, and Huffington Post. His podcast, Glitter In The Garbage, was deemed “lowbrow and brilliant” in New York magazine’s Approval Matrix. A seasoned veteran behind the scenes, Cookie Dough’s overthe-top personality and wild antics both on stage and screen have made her an overnight sensation – some 16 years in the making! Recent credits include a guest vocal appearance with the world’s only mash-up band, Smash-Up Derby, live stage shows playing Sophia Petrillo in The Golden Girls, and a recent show with drag comedian Shirley Q. Liquor. Cookie has plans to start her own rock group, and has no plans to leave the stage any time soon. COOKIEVISION.COM

RUBBER SIDE DOWN •

Not many bands can make Velvet Revolver look like a “chenille popgun,” but Rubber Side Down offers a bit more bang for your buck......with crashing cymbals and thunderous bass lines, ZeroFighter takes us back to the rock future. In a music market saturated with indie-this and pop-that, Rubber Side Down strives to be different and gets back to the sort of rock seduction that makes Van Halen, AC/ DC and Aerosmith so appealing. Truthfully, this glam/rock sound is hard to come by. RSD-MUSIC.COM

THE YOUNGER LOVERS • Brontez Purnell is the mastermind behind the band The Younger Lovers. Originally from Triana, Alabama, Purnell is a zinester (“Schlepp Fanzine” and “Fag School”), writer, dancer and musician, who now lives in Oakland, California. He briefly played guitar for the band Panty Raid, with Seth Bogart, and then joined the group Gravy Train!!!! (as ‘Junx’). He has performed with the band Hot Ass Sex Bomb with members Janelle Hessig and Vice Cooler and he can also be found in the DJ booth at clubs in San Francisco. TWITTER.COM/YOUNGERLOVERS DARIUS LUX • The award-winning singer/songwriter Darius Lux combines his appreciation of 60s songwriting, 70s soul, 80s pop and 90s hip-hop into a current mix of soulful, rock-edged pop tunes, Darius Lux found his voice on his debut record “Arise”, and now he takes us, and his band, to the streets for his new EP, “Time is Now.” Darius’ music is a statement describing how we can take control of our lives. “For each one of us, life can be full of different fears, but we have to remember that fear is a choice. When we decide we don’t want fear and we have chosen to believe in ourselves instead, we find that we begin to receive the things in life we’ve hoped for.” Darius is currently gigging on the West Coast with his band and living his life against the grain - with every spirited note he plays; he urges us to do the same. Growing up an Air Force brat introduced him to many places, including Europe and the East Coast. Electro-pop, R&B, rap and dance music have always turned him on. XAVIER TOSCANO • Xavier Toscano has had a lifelong love of music. His music is enthusiastic, energetic, dance-urban pop. He blends his love of disco, rap, rock, reggae and R&B music; reflecting major influence from Madonna, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Timbaland, The Neptunes, and many more. Xavier believes that pop music is the soundtrack to our lives. When you hear a pop song from your past, it has the power to take you back. It brings back memories long faded into sepia back with a colorful pop, allowing the past to be instantly relived. That is why Xavier loves music so much. And that is the power he hopes to infuse into his songs. XAVIERTOSCANO.COM THE MONSTER SHOW • The Monster Show routinely draws appearances by many of San Francisco’s top entertainers. Hostess, Cookie Dough, prides herself on not just catering to drag queens and she opens the stage to performers of any gender and identity, from novice to pro. COOKIEVISION.COM CORPUS HIDEOUS • Corpus Hideous is a new queer synth rock band. As he matured, so did his passion, perspective, and opinion on what sounds get people to move. After some motivation from friends, Guy Ruben hit the dance floor hard in 2007, and has been entrancing partygoers with his unrelenting beats ever since at 440, Powerhouse, and Lookout.
