PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to the 40th Annual Castro Street Fair! On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are so glad you can join us. Who could have guessed that, some forty years ago, a small neighborhood celebration started by a local merchant would still be thriving, well into the new millennium? Of course, the small neighborhood was not just any neighborhood, it’s the world-famous Castro district. And the local merchant, also a fierce community organizer, was none other than Harvey Milk. While planning this year’s fair, the Board and I have often returned to the idea of what Harvey would have thought about San Francisco in 2013. When thinking about the ideals of Harvey Milk, the politician, we certainly have plenty to celebrate on this, the Ruby Anniversary of the Castro Street Fair. As you probably know, if there is one thing that the Castro knows how to do, it is celebrate. Some of my most favorite memories are of gathering as a community on Castro Street between Market and 18th - election nights, sports victories, Pink Saturdays, and the annual tradition of the Castro Street Fair. I hope you have just as great a time enjoying today as we’ve had planning it. As befitting a true milestone celebration, we’ve pulled out all the stops in our entertainment lineup this year. Each stage and dance area is packed with sensational acts, so make your way around the Fair and be dazzled throughout the day. We have so many people and groups to thank for making the Fair a success this and every year: the fabulous local businesses, the vendors and talented artists you’ll be seeing today, the hundreds of community volunteers who donate their time. We’re proud to be working with our beneficiary partners: nonprofit organizations who continue, year after year, to do their part to improve our neighborhood, through healthcare, support, culture, education, and more. Check out our list of beneficiaries, and be sure to say hello to their volunteers at the gates and around the fairgrounds. (And remember, your gate donations make a huge difference in how much money they raise this year, so feel free to give on your way out as well as your way into the Fair!) At the heart of the Fair is our neighbors: the residents of the Castro -- thank you again for being such generous hosts. You have much to be proud of here, in the best neighborhood in San Francisco. It’s no wonder that Harvey found himself charmed by the rolling thoroughfares of the Castro, and created a way to pay it tribute. In his words:

“That’s what a street fair should be: for the neighborhood, about the neighborhood, and by the neighborhood.” So, let’s paint the town red! Relax, enjoy, and have a great Fair!

Fred Lopez - President, Board of Directors

40 YEARS OF COMMUNITY

Harvey Milk fundraising at the Castro Street Fair on August 20, 1977. (Gay Vote, predecessor to today’s Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, sponsored a booth in front of Milk’s camera store to raise funds to defeat Prop. 6, The Briggs Initiative, which sought to fire openly gay teachers and their vocal allies.)

Harvey Milk, Pablo Heising, Jane Warner, Rick Thomas, Jake Hesse, Dick Carn, the entire Espinosa family, David Meyer, Edward Goehring, Michael Meracle, Laura Martell, David Miller, Steve Adams, Gordon Gregg, Jerry Acosta, Richard Winchester, Robin Gettleson, Joe Hollomon, Michael Michaud, Max Barnaby, Flower Frankenstein, Rana Freedman, MUMC, the Castro Lions, the Bears of San Francisco, the Castro/Eureka Valley Neighborhood Association, all of the residents and neighbors of the Castro, thousands of volunteers, and countless more individuals and organizations who have either served on the board of directors, volunteered their time and efforts, or in some way supported the Castro Street Fair have all added to the vibrancy of the Fair for the past 40 years. We wouldn’t be here without you!

Arend & heyLove* can drop many genres of music and can create a chill lounge vibe, as well as move a dance floor all night. The “B” Sessions has played for events such as the San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Festival and currently performs every third Saturday at Disco Volante in Oakland for their monthly residency.

Winner of The Best Drag Show in the Bay Guardian Readers’ Poll, The Monster Show is excited to play the Castro Street Fair’s Main Stage. It is the highlight of the year for The Monster Show, having previously performed at Gay Day Great America, as well as BootieSF, The Fillmore Auditorium (opening for CSS), and Beatbox. Now entering their 10th year in The Castro, The Monster Show plays to packed houses every Thursday night at The Edge Bar.

Allyson Baker doesn’t scare easily. Back in the ’90s, she was sneaking into Dwarves shows and frequenting mosh pits before she was barely out of junior high. By age of 17, she was playing guitar for some of Toronto’s most notorious punk and hardcore bands before leaving her friends and family behind in 2000 to shake some action in San Francisco. Yet, for all her apparent fearlessness, Allyson is very much haunted by forces beyond her control. Dirty Ghosts may be her new band, but it’s the five-years-in-the-making product of a habit she just can’t quit, a sound and vision that - despite numerous obstacles along the way - just had to be unleashed.

In 1999, a young scratch nerd with a passion for the ones and twos, a love of party rock, early electro, and 90s hip hop set forth with one dream in mind - to become one of the best DJs to have ever come out of California. Starting in local venues such as Ruby Skye, he moved on to CIA and Belasco in Los Angeles, and has traveled as far as Marquee in Sydney, Australia. Today you can find Jimmy Hits all over the place, from his residencies at Costello’s and Sloane Squared to spinning for the electronic group Super Square. He boasts an open format style that ranges from electro dance, dubstep, trap and beyond.

Since the release of her debut album in 2000, Peaches has spread her smart and progressive lyrics to the pop culture landscape, harnessing a worldwide audience and, along with the countless followers, shaped the mainstream into a more inclusive and sexually progressive surrounding. 2013 saw the release of Peaches’ critically acclaimed feature film debut, Peaches Does Herself. The Hollywood Reporter stated that it was, “A loosely biographical rock opera featuring outlandish costumes, transexual dancers, lashing of smutty humor and simulated hardcore sex. This self-directed carnival of carnal excess feels like The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a postgrad doctorate in Queer Theory.” Over the years, she’s built a reputation for her suggestive and intelligent lyrics, her amalgamation of rock and electro sounds, and her balls-out performances, while continuing to outdo herself with each brash step.

LEGENDS STAGE 18TH @ COLLINGWOOD 11:00 AM Stefanie Phillips 12:00 PM Rolo 1:00 PM Blackstone 2:00 PM Jim Hopkins 3:00 PM David Harness 4:00 PM Page Hodel 5:00 PM Pete Avila

Stefanie has been DJing for 27 years. Her first DJ gig was in the 80s at a SOMA club called BayBrick Inn. She’s had residencies at numerous clubs including the alternative music club called Female Trouble. She’s been fortunate to play Trocadero, I-Beam, The Endup, 1015 Folsom and other major dance clubs. She is also well known for playing those dirty house beats at the legendary Detour. Today you can catch Stefanie playing at The Café and LOOKOUT.

A native San Franciscan, DJ Rolo Talorda has been spinning his magic on the City’s house and club scene since the early 90s, from The Sound Factory to the infamous The Endup, from Lift at DV8 to Breathe Deep at 1015 Folsom. Rolo has played gigs in Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle and Singapore. In 1996 he took up the residency mantle at Fag Fridays at The Endup and played his deep, soulful, disco house sound every week until the club’s farewell in 2007. After a brief hiatus, Rolo has been spotted stirring up the dance floor at San Francisco hotspots Monarch, Public Works, DNA Lounge, Powerhouse and Tank18.

Blackstone started DJing in bars and clubs in 1987. His first big clubs were DNA Lounge and City Nights. He is best known for keeping house alive in the Castro with his unforgettable dark and sexy mixes at The Detour. “No matter what type of music it is I always try to find the funk element in it,” he says.

With over 140 remixes to his name, 32 years of DJing, and 28 years of music production under his belt, Jim Hopkins has solidified himself as a San Francisco legend. With roots dating back to the beginnings of the SF rave scene, Jim Hopkins played regularly as one half of The Electroliners. Jim has seen much success from his long list of original productions, including the ‘95 anthem “Loose Caboose.” Jim has played in over 48 cities across the nation and had tracks licensed to labels around the world. He is a resident of 440 Castro and there plays what he calls a musical time machine mashup, all genres and decades skillfully mashed together.

David Harness has been DJing professionally since 1989. He is best known for playing at groundbreaking San Francisco clubs like Sound Factory/Twirl for Dave Deen, LIFT at DV8 for Joseph Solis and Dr. Winkie, Club Uuniverse at Townsend for Audrey Joseph and Ty Dakota, Fag Fridays at The Endup for David Peterson and Jose Mineros, and David’s own party, TABOO. He has also played The Detour and The Café, a couple of his favorite Castro bars. “I will play deep, tribal, classic house, nu disco, always soulful,” says David.

Page has been a DJ for 32 years. She’s worked in every big club, straight and gay, in San Francisco through the 1980s and ‘90s including Oasis, City Nights, Club X, Club 9, Nightbreak, BayBrick and Trocadero. Then

she ran The Box and Club Q for many years. Page Hodel was the first female mixer on major market radio doing the noon mix on KSOL and LIVE 105, and worked as a reporter for Billboard Magazine for sixteen years. Make sure to check out her popular dance party Jukebox on Thursday nights at Beatbox.

DJ Pete Avila is one of the Bay Area’s original house DJs. He’s held residencies at practically every major venue in SF. He is perhaps best known as producer of Your Mama’s House, the Bay Area’s first house mix show on 106KMEL. He’s credited for bringing house music and the sound of the underground to the masses and helped put San Francisco on the map. He’s worked with dance legends Martha Wash, Jocelyn Brown, Aretha Franklin and Todd Terry and has remixed platinum artists like Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Usher and Julie McKnight.

PM Juanita MORE! and Sidekick PM WolfBitch PM dAvi A PM Billy Lace

San Francisco drag legend Juanita MORE! packs her bags full of enough soul, house, techno and disco music to make anyone shake their groove thing on the dance floor. Famous for her shockingly stylish fashion assaults, this jewelry-laden lady will keep you moving your ass all night long. Catch her at her resident gigs at Booty Call Wednesdays and BEATPIG in San Francisco, and Vandam in New York. Sidekick started his DJ career five years ago with Juanita MORE! at Booty Call Wednesdays. Tag-teaming with Juanita might be his favorite thing ever as the two have a blast riffing off each others’ songs and style. Juanita coined the name Sidekick and it’s a perfect fit.

WolfBitch makes fantasy lounge music for the purpose of unicorn procreation. Her infectious blend of futuristic bass, house, trap and tastemaker electronica sets her apart from her contemporaries in the San Francisco scene, and she has been featured in high profile gigs, opening up for the likes of Modeselektor, Holy Other, and Addison Groove. Nothing makes WolfBitch happier than sharing timeless music that stays above the trend, and making sounds come together in the studio. Look out for WolfBitch at the next STEREO party at MIGHTY with LE1F.

Even though his DJ career has just began to blossom, dAvi A (formerly dAvi) is no newcomer to the electronic music dance scene. His roots definitely lie in dance music, even though finds inspiration in many other genres such as indie rock and post-punk. He hosted White Diamonds, one of San Francisco’s best electro/indie dance parties. dAvi A has opened for such talents as Jamie Jones, Tiger & Woods, Tone of Arc, Pezzner, Benoit & Sergio, and Clockwork. Using nu disco, disco, synth, indie, acid, house and techhouse, with a touch of music’s darker side, he has created a rare taste of exceptional electronic music.

Hailing from New York City, DJ/Producer Billy Lace has carved out a distinguished spot amongst the elite with a signature, high-energy sound that blends vocals and driving bass lines. In a time when DJs play so much of the same music, Billy’s commitment to creating and delivering an innovative sound has been well received. Known for his marathon sets that pack dance floors throughout the night, Billy is highly regarded as one of the hottest rising stars in the electronic music scene. He has been lauded for “impressive grooves and flow” by the legendary Danny Tenaglia and for his “innovative sound” by mentor Hector Fonseca.
