WELCOME Dear Friends of the Castro Street Fair

Since joining the Board of Directors for the Castro Street Fair, I have learned what it means to be part of a brotherhood. It is not something I ever imagined that I’d participate in and enjoy. I’m typically the type of person that manages things on my own. So, collaborating with other people, especially a large group of people, has always scared me. During my years with the Fair, I have learned to get past this fear and celebrate being on a team. My fellow Board members, all volunteers, are all very different with expertise in their own fields. We have a nurse, a web designer, artists, nonprofit professionals, event producers, entertainment experts, tech industry folks, and one extraordinary community member who has been on the board for 20 years. Each of these smart, kind people bring their skills and experience to the planning table and commit all year to mastering the ever-changing puzzle that is The Castro Street Fair. Every year, we face new challenges, like having to bid talented people farewell as they seek out other, less expensive cities to live in. Every year, we solve new problems, such as meeting the rising costs of production. What links us all together, however, is that we share a common goal. We are driven to carry on the legacy that is Harvey Milk’s Fair. While we all come from different backgrounds, we and the volunteers who came before us have worked to keep this Fair going, and the community has enjoyed our efforts for over forty years now. And while on the surface it’s a great celebration, we always keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to assist our nonprofit beneficiaries with much-needed funds. It can be an uphill battle, but, in the end, so rewarding when the streets are packed with happy, dancing fairgoers. So, brothers and sisters, we invite you to join us in fulfilling the dream that Harvey had. Please enjoy yourselves, say hello to your neighbors, purchase something cute from a vendor, and enjoy cold beverages in the street with friends. The Fair thrives on your energy and your smiles. And, if you’d like to help make the Castro Street Fair better year after year, maybe consider volunteering for the Fair. We can’t do it without your support. Thank you! Your Friend,

Juan Garcia

President, Board of Directors The Castro Street Fair

THE PURPLE ONES

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 2016 marks the twentieth fair for our esteemed board member Steve Gaynes. He’s been an incredible resource of history, perspective and wit. The community wouldn’t be the same without his contributions and we are honored to be a part of his world. Thanks so very much for everything, Steve! Thanks to former board member Ross Cantor for your service to the Fair. We wish you the best in your future endeavors! Thanks also go to Craig Meland for his graphic design of this year’s imagery and t-shirt. Craig has been has working professionally as a graphic artist for sixteen years. He was inspired by the RetroWave movement when designing the shirt for this year’s Castro Street Fair. In his spare time he likes to doodle cute penises. “I am honored to be a part of such a great event with such rich history,” Craig says. Special thanks to the crew of Google employees who donated to the Fair in honor of a recent joyous occasion. We appreciate the support!

2016 BENEFICIARIES The Castro Street Fair wouldn’t be possible without the participation and volunteer power of these local nonprofit organizations. In 2015, the Fair donated over $45,000 to help them continue providing essential services to the communities in and around the Castro. Your donation of $5 to $10 at the gates is very important to these efforts, so please help out on your way in or out of the fair. Thank you!

Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, Shelix captivates as the Bay Area’s blondest bearded beauty. “Becoming a part of the LGBT/drag community here in San Francisco has been such a positive experience for myself as well as everyone around me. It’s amazing to be in a position to work with children, promote things I believe in, and to give back to the community that supports me so much!” Catch Shelix throwing LQQKS at the Powerhouse, at Laszlo for Hey GIRL Bingo, or most Wednesdays in the Castro.

SAN FRANCISCO LESBIAN GAY FREEDOM BAND

The San Francisco Lesbian Gay Freedom Band was founded by Jon Reed Sims in 1978 as the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Marching Band and Twirling Corps. Sims, born in Smith Center, Kansas, was a musician and performer who formed the band in response to Anita Bryant‘s anti-gay campaign in the late 1970s. Upon its founding in 1978, it became the first openly-gay musical group in the world. Sims also created the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, and the Lambda Pro Musica orchestra.

FUN HOME | CURRAN THEATER

San Francisco’s Curran is back with a new vision! Inspired by the unique entrepreneurial spirit of the Bay Area, and Carole Shorenstein Hays’s lifelong passion for creatively daring, cutting-edge material, the Curran will provide a home for the most exciting stage works being created today. The Curran is proud to partner with Oakland School for the Arts to bring the Castro Street Fair a sampling of the Tony Award-winning musical, Fun Home opening at the Curran this January! sfcurran.com

BITCH PLEASE

Founded in 2016, the queer punk band Bitch Please has dedicated their careers to spreading dissection, dishonesty, and their legs to the city by the bay. With Bretchen Towers on vocals, Jacob Barcena on lead guitar, Robbie Connelly on bass and James Garcia on drum set, Bitch Please have been spreading their message of “a girl’s gotta have dreams” across San Francisco. Bitch Please hopes to accomplish world domination and a year’s supply of Wet N’ Wild cosmetics in the coming year. We are here to rule. Are you ready?

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA SHOWGIRLS

After its sold out run earlier this year, the cast of the cult hit drag rock musical Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra Showgirls will perform highlights from the show at the Castro Street Fair as they prepare to remount the show in January of 2017 at Oasis. Written by D’Arcy Drollinger and Enrique, Ultra Showgirls follows Super Vixen, a struggling all-girl rock band with big dreams, big boobs, big hair and big everything else. Shamelessly inspired by Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and Showgirls, this over-the-top dark musical comedy has enough poor taste references to keep any B-movie junky erect. SHELIX

VOLLMER

MARKUS

Markus is the music project of Mark Zannad, a designer living in San Francisco. Zannad moved to SF in 2009 from Las Vegas, Nevada and started his first music project, Seatraffic. After five years and countless Bay Area shows, Zannad took his production solo and to a much darker place with heavy textures, relentless bass lines, and emotional vocals. Drawing influence from house, electro, and R&B, Markus brings an eclectic sound that bends the categories of today’s genres.

MONSTER SHOW

The Monster Show, founded by the beloved Cookie Dough and DJ MC2, continues every Thursday at the Edge Bar and every third Saturday at Bootie (DNA Lounge) with hostesses Sue Casa and Sugah Betes, and cofounder DJ MC2 on the decks. A mix of punk rock aesthetics, pop music and musical theater madness, the award winning show and club party is a true staple of San Francisco, running for twelve years.

VOLLMER

Vollmer is dedicated group of artists, fans of Joan and Bill, avowed feminists. We are here to examine the price of inspiration, and to shed light on the memory of Joan Vollmer, and others (including Bill) whose sacrifices made possible some of the greatest literature and art of the last century. It was started and continues to be about the memory of Joan, and the meaning of love in the midst of chaos.
