Welcome to the 37th annual Castro Street Fair. Harvey Milk, and his partner Scott Smith, began this wonderful tradition in 1974 when they owned Castro Camera. By the early 70’s, the neighborhood known as Eureka Valley underwent a revival. Gay men and lesbians found a new home in the Castro and gave boarded-up stores new life. The Castro Street Fair continues to showcases our community to San Francisco and the Bay Area and Harvey would have been proud to see its success. This past year has been full of changes for the neighborhood. The Planning Commission approved the GLBT Historical Society’s (www.glbthistory.org) plans to share a space with Walgreen’s on Castro Street and is planning to open their first exhibit later this year. The popular trial plaza at 17th and Market is now a permanent fixture of the neighborhood and the thriving Castro Farmer’s Market is now in its second year. Sadly, we also said good-bye to Officer Jane Warner, who passed away in May after battling cancer. As many of you know, Jane ran run her city-chartered police service in the Castro and surrounding area for the last 20 years, dedicating her life to protecting the peace and serving communities from Hawaii to San Francisco – especially the Castro, Mission, and Noe Valley. She cared deeply about the quality of life and safety of the residents of these communities. When we talk about making a difference in the lives of others, it is people like Jane that we think about. This year also marks my last Castro Street Fair as Supervisor. Serving you for the past eight years has been the job of a lifetime and I enjoyed every moment of it. It has been tremendous to see how dedicated the residents and merchants of the Castro neighborhood are to not only supporting each other but also ensuring that the Castro remains a strong and vibrant neighborhood for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community and for our City. So today, please enjoy the Castro Street Fair: have fun, see friends and support the great small businesses that contribute to the vitality and character that is the Castro. Best regards

president’s welcome
Come get your freak on at this year’s 37th Annual Castro Street Fair. which promises to be the biggest daytime costume party ever. The streets of the Castro will be filled with entertainment, loads of costumes, great art, great food, and good times. We hope that everyone will get into the theme and bring a little of their inner freak to the Fair. Our Entertainment Chair, Juan Garcia, has put together a day full of exciting entertainment on both of our live stages and in our dance areas. For the third year in a row, Barnaby’s World of Wonderment will transform their block of 18th Street into an interactive performance space that channels the spirit of the early days of the Fair. From comedy, to live music, to dance-floor-harkening DJs, to the interactive arts of burlesque, this is sure to be one of our best parties EVER! We are also excited that the San Francisco Artists Guild, a highly praised addition to last year’s event, is also returning with an open-air gallery at Castro and 19th. NYC artist, and former San Franciscan, Scooter LaForge has designed an amazing T-shirt for us this year, and we will have a limited quantity of them for sale at our Information Booth on Castro Street at Market. Times have been tough last year and this year for everyone and we hope to be able to give our non-profit volunteers the same financial commitment as last year, so please know that your gate donations go not only to the Pride Flag at Harvey Milk Plaza, but to many community service providers as well! We are so glad you are here. Let’s have a great day together supporting the Castro, our vendors, and of course the community organizations that are so wonderful! Sincerely,
Laura Martell - Castro Street Fair, Board President McPUZO & TROTSKY

In Memory of
Officer Jane Warner
This year’s fair is dedicated to the memory of Officer Jane Warner, who passed away in May after a yearlong battle against ovarian cancer. For more than a decade Jane was a member of the Castro Street Fair Board of Directors; she was a trusted colleague and dear friend to us all. Jane was an amazing woman and Castro personality; spending almost every day for the past 20 years in the neighborhood helping to keep it safe. We all will remember her caring for others and her love for animals. Jane’s kindness, positive attitude, and commitment to community serve as a reminder that one person can indeed make a difference. Her commitment to the Fair was an inspiration to everyone who worked with her and she is truly missed.

Hosted by ROOFTOP COMEDIAN, RONN VIGH • Ronn Vigh, so-sexy-it’sdifficult-to-not-jump-his-bones-while-he’s-on-stage, brings his unique brand of comedy to clubs, colleges, and airport lavatories all over the world. His brash attitude and acerbic wit have earned him a comparison to a young Joan Rivers by SF Weekly. Well, if she were male, gay, and didn’t shoot Botox by the pound. He was featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing II and in 2005 founded and still produces the successful “Harvey’s Funny Tuesday’s” weekly comedy show at Harvey’s in the Castro District of San Francisco.
PEPPERSPRAY • Patti Smith. Anna Nicole Smith. Robert Smith. The Smiths. Smith & Wesson. The strobe light of celebrity flashes and the stars collide in your mind. Eclectic streams of influence merge and an electric new super-band emerges. Witness the cultural marvel that is PEPPERSPRAY! Each of these award winning Z-list megastars have marked their turf internationally in music, film, fashion, dance, design, porn and theatre. Collectively, as PEPPERSPRAY, they have dragged the age-old institution of female impersonation back into the rock ‘n’ roll spotlight. They’ve opened for Cher and Scissor Sisters. They’ve headlined the biggest street fairs in the US of A. The San Francisco Examiner calls PEPPERSPRAY “...a combination of The Spice Girls and The Sex Pistols”. They are impossibly cool and deliriously fun. PEPPERSPRAYBAND.COM
POP ROCKS • Pop Rocks is a high energy rock/dance band celebrating 10 years of delivering it to you live -- from their hometown of San Francisco, to gigs across the country, playing nationally at parties, club dates and social events for folks who are looking for something fun, wild, and unapologetically over the top. Taking it to the next level is what these boys like to do. JAYSIEGANPRESENTS.COM
SMASH-UP DERBY • Okay, look, we know how most of these band bios start: Imagine a band that mixes [insert well-known indie band here] with [insert famous pop artist here] sprinkled with a dash of [for intrigue, insert descriptive noun here]. And of course, it’s usually complete bullshit. Unless, that is, you’re talking about SMASH-UP DERBY. That’s because SMASH-UP DERBY indeed does do all of the above – quite literally. In fact, they’re a totally kick-ass rock cover band – except the singers think they’re in a pop band. So while the band is cranking out rockin’ songs by Nirvana, Franz Ferdinand, U2, or Metallica, the singers are belting out Madonna, Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, or Run-DMC - at the same time. On paper, it sounds like a train wreck, but in actuality, it melds beautifully. You’ll never hear the originals the same way again. They are, quite simply, one of San Francisco’s most exciting bands. SMASHUPDERBY.COM THE LAST AMBASSADORS • The Last Ambassadors is a band on the rise as one of the premier live acts in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing on a variety of
community stage (continued) musical influences, TLA provides a high-energy live experience that has garnered fans around the world. Formed in the spring of 2008, TLA has drawn comparisons to such disparate acts as Pink Floyd, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and My Morning Jacket. The band released their debut EP “Slaves to Time” in January of 2009 and recently finished recording tracks for their first full-length album, scheduled to be released in the summer of 2010. BRAY • Bray’s ability to reach into each and every listener to convey the feelings of anguish associated with heartbreak reveals a songwriting and performance maturity on the same level of Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Bray’s music floods your soul with a gritty, seductive cutting-edge rock sound and a disarming pop sensibility to such a point, Zero Magazine proclaims, “Bray is undefeated in the originality category.” Bray’s lusty, sweat-soaked, shout-along live performances are described as “Mike Patton and Elvis Costello meeting for a Molotov with the sharp, crunchy riffs of The Killers, and theatrical shades of Bowie,” states Brooke Aldridge of Pulse. Aaron Axelson, music director of San Francisco’s premier FM New Rock radio station, LIVE 105, states, “I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he lands a major recording contract.” BRAYMUSIC.COM
COOKIE DOUGH & THE MONSTER SHOW • The Castro Street Fair wouldn’t be complete without a giant, epic drag number. The only show in history to earn “Best Musical” from all four major British awards, JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA is a fascinating mix of high art and low culture. Inspired by America’s most lurid TV talk show, JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA channels all the mayhem and excitement that held worldwide television audiences in utter rapture. After opening in London to unprecedented raves, this outlandish, shockingly hilarious opera will rage at the Victoria Theatre in the Mission for just six weeks. ROLTHEATRE.COM GYPSY LOVE • Gypsy Love dedicates her life to expressing love through music and movement. A singer/songwriter, dancer, and jewelry designer, Gypsy makes magic wherever she goes. Growing up, her musical influences spanned the spectrum from soulful funk and classic rock to world fusion, hip-hop, and disco. Gypsy recognized very early that dance brings people joy, and that joy inspires more dance. A native San Franciscan, Gypsy drew endless inspiration from the city’s diverse artistic electricity – especially in the SOMA district during the height of SF’s underground house music scene. Over time, Gypsy soon began to create her own unique sound – where disco funk meets world fusion. Classically trained in the art of Middle Eastern bellydance, Gypsy sings and dances regularly throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, fusing Western and Eastern music and dance stylings in the name of Love. GYPSYTIME.COM TRAGIK • Born Florencia Garcia Carcagna, in Argentina on March 14, 1985, Tragik was raised in San Francisco, after her family fled her native country following the collapse of a despotic dictatorship. Her mother delved into social activism while her step-father joined an Afro-Cuban salsa band. Heavily armed with political, social, and musical knowledge, Tragik began her own movement to empower the youth in her community through various non-profit organizations. As a photographer, Tragik has become well-known in her own right. Inspired by her subjects and encouraged by Youth Speaks and Sisterz of the Underground, Tragik began to perform spoken word. Poetry, rap and spoken word became an outlet for Tragik to unleash her personal views of life, politics, and human rights. Tragik was invited to work with a rising producer named Freddy Stylz and what emerged from their collaboration is an exciting electro propulsive dance album and a recording contract with MegaMic Entertainment. She has been busy ever since, performing and winning over fans. LADYTRAGIK.COM ADONISAURUS • Singer/songwriter Derek Schmidt has been in folk land for a while, and while he loves it, he has always been interested in electronic music with all its possibilities. Derek started playing music with Brian Whitty, and Danyol Leon soon followed. After many hours in a dimly lit bedroom knob twiddling and beat making, the majestic Adonisaurus was born. PEARLS OVER SHANGHAI • Thrillpeddlers happily announces that due to popular demand and sold-out houses, its award-winning production of PEARLS OVER SHANGHAI, San Francisco’s longest-running Cockettes musical hit has been extended again through Dec. 19, 2010. What started as a two-month limited engagement in June 2009 will now play for a year and a half! PEARLS has unanimously received rave reviews from critics and audience alike. It’s a phenomenon that keeps on growing. THRILLPEDDLERS.COM/PEARLS-OVER-SHANGHAI BEARD SUMMIT • Beard Summit is a recent collaboration of four men from San Francisco. As Fred, Vinny, Jeff, and James navigate the topography of urban life, they aim to craft songs that inspire, provoke, and don’t suck. Citing diverse influences from punk, pop, and indie rock, their united talents produce a sound that is fresh and spirited. Plus, they’re hot. facebook.com/BeardSummit JOSHUA KLIPP • What does a talented vocalist do after hitting the Billboard Charts, screening music videos worldwide, touring internationally and being featured on national television? Naturally...it’s jazz, man. Jazz vocalist Joshua Klipp has spent the last six years focused on his pop music project, and continues to work with trail-blazing music producer Kristopher Cloud while foraying back into his first vocal love - jazz. In late 2009, Josh teamed up with acclaimed pianist Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls) and went in studio to record the first of several tracks for his new jazz album (work in progress) with studio engineer Jon Evans (Tori Amos). This album is scheduled to release late 2010, early 2011. In March 2010, Joshua also re-teamed up with filmmaker Aarin Burch to shoot his music video for “Little Girl” featured on both The Tyra Banks Show and The L Word. JOSHUAKLIPP.COM
