FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends, “You Are Here!” One of the most stirring pieces in tonight’s concert is from Andrew Lippa’s I Am Harvey Milk. Entitled “You Are Here,” it is sung by Harvey Milk and describes the thrill he experienced standing right here in San Francisco – just across the street at City Hall – sharing his message of hope, inclusion and pride. Now, you are here and we are here doing the same thing Harvey did nearly four decades ago – dreaming of a better world and standing proud. Welcome to Tales of Our City: Our Lives, Our Heroes! The concept for this evening’s program began with a dream of saluting a man who, quite literally, brought “our” San Francisco into the national conversation. In 1978, Armistead Maupin penned the first installment of the Tales of the City series for the San Francisco Chronicle. Over forty years and nine novels, Maupin has truly brought the magical world of San Francisco alive, inspiring generations of readers to this day. In More Tales of The City, the second book in the series, lead character Michael Tolliver pens a moving coming out letter to his parents, after discovering their involvement with the anti-gay Save Our Children campaign. This letter has been read, copied, shared and sung by countless people around the world and we are thrilled to share it with you tonight: "Michael's Letter to Mama." Over the years, SFGMC has commissioned music that speaks directly to the LGBT experience. One of the first major works of this kind was 1996’s NakedMan by Robert Seeley and Philip Littell. Tonight marks the 20th Anniversary of that piece. NakedMan is the first major LGBT choral work based on actual stories of SFGMC’s singing members. Former Artistic Director Dr. Stan Hill (1989-2000) guided the creative process. The evening opens with a world premiere by our new Composer-inResidence Dr. James Granville Eakin III. The song beckons us all to open the gates of our hearts, our city, our country. Tonight, we tell some of our own tales through song and honor a wide array of heroes who have changed our lives and our city. We are so happy you are here with us. Yours,

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE "We are absolutely thrilled to have Dr. James Granville Eakin III as the Composer-in-Residence for SFGMC. He is not new to the Chorus, though. The first composition by James we performed was ‘We Are The Stars’ from STARGAZING back in 2011. The work was named one of the five most popular pieces for men’s choruses by the American Choral Directors, and was a major highlight of Words, my first concert as Artistic Director of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. One of the other highlights was James’ arrangement of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,’ that had the audience at the War Memorial Opera House in 2013 literally holding its breath. In addition, James arranged the beloved ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco,’ which we sing often. Tonight, we perform the world premiere of ‘Behold, the Gate.’ Please join me in welcoming Dr. James Granville Eakin III to the SFGMC family!" - Dr. Timothy Seelig, Artistic Director
DR. JAMES GRANVILLE EAKIN III was born and raised in Shreveport,
Louisiana. From an early age, he was drawn to his native blues and jazz as well as classical and film music, playing everything he heard by ear on the piano and experimenting with his own compositions. It wasn’t until years later that he began formal music studies. He earned a bachelor of music degree from Centenary College (2000), a master of music degree from Southern Methodist University (2003) and in 2007, received a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Composition at the Conservatory of Music, University of MissouriKansas City. James has had the privilege of studying with some of music’s most prominent composers: John Corigliano, Jeff Rona, Jack Smalley, George Tsontakis, Bruce Broughton, Zhou Long and Chen Yi. Eakin’s music catalog is prolific and spans genres from Concert Hall to Pop/Rock. James’ hour-long “Flowers over the Graves of War” for Chorus, Soloists, and Orchestra premiered to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall and most recently, his “#twitterlieder: 15 tweets in 3 acts,” premiered by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus at Davies Symphony Hall, has taken the choral world by storm. James is a full-time composer and currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Heather, and son, James Eakin IV. He is thrilled to be a part of the SFGMC family and looks forward to joining them in healing the world one song at a time. For more information or to contact James, visit jameseakin.com. 2016.04 • BAYSTAGES.COM

We are thrilled to announce the following bequests have been fully restored in honor of those who gave the generous gifts: • • • • •
Robert Weinand Reserve Fund Peter Davids Fund for FAN Club Platou Rebhahn Fund for Costuming Bud Castleman Fund for the Artistic Director’s Salary Lee Westbrook Fund for Chorus Education
These funds continue to grow along with our Endowment. For information about the funds or the Endowment, please contact Interim Development Associate Ryan Nunez at 415.865.3650 or ryan.nunez@sfgmc.org. Thank you.
