Whether you plan to escape to an outdoor adventure in Sonoma Valley or want to revel in the farm-to-fork cuisine and wine tasting that makes up downtown Healdsburg, let our hotels be the place you come to relax. Featuring in-room fireplaces, private patios or balconies, saunas, steam rooms, spas and complimentary breakfast, we have redefined affordable luxury in Sonoma Wine Country.

Be You. Here.

HAPPY EVERYTHING! Dear friends and family, Welcome to Paradise Found! Your search is over. Tonight, you are in the beautifully renovated Herbst Theatre, with friends, family or complete strangers sitting beside you, and surrounded by mighty handsome men singing stunningly beautiful music. What could be better? For the next two hours, we ask that you join us as we discover new ways to describe that elusive thing we call paradise. It could be heaven, or a journey out of hell (the world premiere of James Eakin’s breathtaking new work “Paradiso”). It might be finding a green oasis in the midst of a bustling city (another spectacular world premiere, Ola Gjeilo’s “Sanctuary”). Then there’s the paradise we find in the people we love, in the grandeur of the world around us, and in music. You’ll hear “Way Up There” by Tena Clark, written for NASA’s Centennial of Flight, and then we’ll enchant you with a band of ukuleles as we sing “Over the Rainbow,” in the style of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. There is most definitely a slice of heaven to be found as we whisk you away to the South Seas. We have traditional Hawaiian chants, a delightful medley from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific, and the wildly talented group of hula dancers Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu, led by Director/Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakāne. Finally, the evening ends with our own call to open our hearts and homes and create a paradise for others. Regardless of the troubled times in which we live, we rise above to create beauty, engender acceptance and spread love (“God Help the Outcasts” and “Dance with the Storm”). Tonight, we bring you a night full of delightful, entertaining and gorgeous music – with a few signature antics thrown in along the way. We’re so happy you’re here with us — sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey as we find our way to paradise. Yours,

DR. TIMOTHY SEELIG artistic director

CHRISTOPHER VERDUGO had his first introduction to the gay choral

movement at the age of eighteen when he joined the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. Three years later, he became artistic director of Paragon Productions, choreographing, directing and producing theatrical productions for cruise lines and hotels throughout the world. In 1999, he combined his event production background with his fundraising skills, working with the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Miami Beach’s Winter Party Music Festival, Communion Foundation and sat on the board of directors of the South Beach Gay Men’s Chorus. Upon moving to Los Angeles in 2003, he was selected as one of two choreographers for the Miss Universe Pageant. Soon after, he left his artistic roots to focus on LGBT and social justice issues working with various LGBT nonprofits including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Equality California, the Human Rights Campaign and GLAAD. He also produced Queer Lounge at Sundance. In 2006, he joined the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles as a singer and five years later was named executive director and chief executive officer. Under Verdugo, the Chorus built an international reputation for musical excellence and doubled its operating budget. It experienced massive expansion that included television and film appearances including the Academy Awards, expanded local education programs in Los Angeles high schools, as well as the launched a nationwide tour - It Gets Better - to combat LGBT teen bullying and suicide in rural American towns. He moved to San Francisco in September to assume the role of executive director of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus.

SFGMC For nearly forty years, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) has served as an international standard bearer for a powerful mix of extraordinary musical excellence and mission-driven activism. Founded in 1978, it was the first choral organization to courageously proclaim its orientation in its name and is credited with helping start the LGBT choral movement that now spans the entire globe, galvanizing and changing the course of LGBT history. It continues to inspire other arts-based community organizations through its performances and involvement in human rights, community activism, empowerment and inclusiveness, establishing it as an icon among LGBT organizations. The Chorus was founded in October 1978. Its first public appearance was only a month later, on the steps of City Hall at the candlelight vigil following the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. Supervisor Milk was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California and one of the most high profile in the world at that time. In 1981, SFGMC embarked on a national tour, performing in nine cities: Dallas, Minneapolis, Lincoln, Detroit, New York City, Boston, Washington DC and Seattle helping many of these cities launch their own LGBT choruses. The Chorus now has over 275 singers in the large chorus and four outreach vocal ensembles. The award-winning Chorus has been heard by millions worldwide and is one of the crown jewels of San Francisco arts organizations. Under the current leadership of Artistic Director Dr. Timothy Seelig, SFGMC has established a heightened level of performance standards receiving wide international acclaim, increased its touring and recording profile and broadened its impact and reputation in the community while maintaining its signature blend of humor, personality and high-voltage performances. The chorus has a phenomenal record of commissioning works from major composers spanning the entire gamut of styles and genres, from Stephen Schwartz to John Corigliano.

SFGMC ENDOWMENT It is with great pride that the board of directors announces the reinstatement of five restricted funds established for the benefit of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus by some incredible men. Over the years, the funds were depleted in emergency situations. A dedicated group of SFGMC historians, researched the original funds, donors and uses for which the donations were made. We are thrilled to announce the following bequests have been fully restored in honor of those who gave the generous gifts: • • • • •

Robert Weinand Reserve Fund Peter Davids Fund for FAN Club Platou Rebhahn Fund for Costuming Bud Castleman Fund for the Artistic Director’s Salary Lee Westbrook Fund for Chorus Education

These funds continue to grow along with our endowment. For information about the funds or the endowment, please contact Executive Director Chris Verdugo at 415.865.3650 or chris.verdugo@sfgmc.org. Thank you.

We are grateful to the SFGMC Divas, a group of Chorus members and supporters who produce an annual "Dragathon" crowdfunding event, which raises funds for our Financial Aid Network (FAN). FAN assistance helps to subsidize dues and other member expenses for Chorus members who would not otherwise be able to participate. Dragathon 2016 raised over $60,000 from 570+ donors. Space limitations preclude our listing them by name, but we deeply appreciate all of these contributors. The preceding lists donors from January 1, 2016 to March 1, 2017. Please forgive any discrepancies or omissions as we migrate to a new CRM system. The Chorus is grateful for all gifts received, including the ones under $100 that are too numerous to list. 2017.03 • BAYSTAGES.COM
