This past August they performed with Kristin Chenoweth for two sold out shows at Town Hall in Provincetown. In October they were featured in Joanna Gleason’s critically acclaimed new show at both 54 Below in New York and Le Petit Theatre in New Orleans. In November they opened the Walt Disney Theater in Orlando and performed with Deborah Voigt, Norm Lewis and Sierra Boggess. Well-Strung stars first violinist Edmund Bagnell, second violinist Christopher Marchant, cellist Daniel Shevlin and violist Trevor Wadleigh. The quartet was formed by producer Mark Cortale and Christopher Marchant. Their most recent show, POPssical, was directed by Donna Drake with arrangements by David Levinson, Well-Strung and Bruce Carter. well-strung.com @wellstrungnyc EDMUND BAGNELL (First Violinist) played Tobias in the first national tour of Sweeney Todd directed by John Doyle. LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR THE FUTURE The Legacy Society of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is comprised of donors who have thoughtfully designated SFGMC as a beneficiary of their will, trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy. In particular, we are thankful to have received very generous gifts in recent years from the estates of Bob Emery, Jerry Geller + Ken Sullivan, James H. Jones, William G. Stephens, and Archibald Wilson. Our Legacy Society members help to ensure the future of the chorus, and its philanthropy has many returns. To learn how you can include SFGMC in your estate planning, or to complete a Declaration of Intent, please contact Miles Walls, Development Coordinator, at 415-865-3650 or miles.walls@sfgmc.org. We would like to thank the current members of our Legacy Society: Daniel P. Aaron, Al Abramowitz, Neil Austin + Tom Burtch, Sal Baglieri + Peter Cincione, Michael Bankert, John H.J. Cashman + Jack L. Ledbetter, Joe Castrovinci + Gordon Smith, Terrence Chan, Rick Crane, Joe Czuberki, Brent Dawson, Bud Dillon, Dr. Mark L. GELLER-SULLIVAN FOUNDATION: AN AMAZING GIFT Two of our longtime friends and fans, Jerry Geller and Ken Sullivan have made a huge difference in our future. These wonderful gentlemen were donors for many years. They were adamant that the Chorus be able to reach beyond the Castro and share its message to mainstream audiences. Sadly, Ken and Jerry have both passed away, but they had included SFGMC in their will. This fall, the Chorus received a gift in excess of one million dollars to help lay the foundation for the future and the next 35 years. We are humbled and grateful beyond words. Throughout the years, several former board chairs were lucky enough to spend time with Ken and Jerry. Here are a few of their words: MICHAEL TATE: Ken and Jerry were quite simply an amazing couple. They were unequivocally humble and low key and quietly lead lives that served as a poignant example of doing good with what you have been given. We are most fortunate to have been a part of their extensive circle of care.

MIKE BANKERT: I had the privilege of meeting Jerry and Ken at a Chorus event where they spoke of their long association with the Chorus as patrons and donors. The last time I saw them together was at their favorite haunt, Twin Peaks. They never failed to express their appreciation of the Chorus. PAUL OLSEN: Like all of us, those sweet men believed SFGMC was a force for change in the world. How good of them to continue supporting this great work through their generous bequest. They appreciated the personal touch and the guarantee that we would work to achieve goals that resonated with us and with them.

W NEW YEAR’S CAROL W Text: Charles Anthony Silvestri ★ Music: Ola Gjeilo

After all the gifts have been opened, After the candles all have burned down, After the warmth comes the chill of the season; After the carols, the winter wind’s sound. After all our friends have departed, After the tinsel is all put away, That is the time to reflect and remember The gifts of the season last more than one day. The wheel of the year keeps turning, returning; The sun, ever-dancing, shall lengthen the day. Soon will the frostbite give way to the flower; Under the snow waits the promise of May. We hold in our hearts the joys of this season, Warming our spirits as bitter winds blow; Bringing to mind our soul, all that matters; And that which is hollow, in faith letting go. Commissioned by Curtis Ponzi for the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, directed by Dr. Timothy Seelig, in honor of Sylvia Ponzi, along with the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus, Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus, Purdue Varsity Glee Club, Seattle Men’s Chorus, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, and the Vancouver Men’s Chorus.

The impetus was a wonderful chorus member who wanted to commission something in memory of his Mother. There was a need to reference loss and survival, to look back but also look forward. Anthony “Tony” Silvestri wrote: “Everyone looks for meaning in life – especially at the holidays. We find it in various ways. We find it in the symbols of our childhood and our past. Sometimes we find meaning in new things and traditions when old ones no longer serve us. Sometimes loneliness is the result of seeking ‘comfort and joy’ in the old images and icons and traditions and finding neither there. That is the time to find new meaning in old things or new meaning in new things. Looking through all of that for what really matters is difficult, but it is possible. I think it might be love that can cut through the din.” Tony and Ola then came up with the idea of the seasons of the year represented in our lives and in our shared journeys: the wheel of the year. The inspiration came from post-holiday activities: gifts opened, candles burned down, friends departed, etc. The frostbite of pain and loss giving way to the flower of hope and renewal. The song ends by giving us permission to move forward from the old traditions that may have beat us down or whose meaning is no longer there in “that which is hollow in faith letting go.” Curtis Ponzi’s mom, the inspiration for the commission, “was full of life, outgoing and friendly and easily one of the kindest and most compassionate people I have ever known. She loved music and from as early as I can remember, there was ALWAYS music playing in the house. She loved Christmas! Every year starting at Thanksgiving, she would gather a children’s chorus of 30 to 40 kids from the neighborhood to start practicing Christmas carols , which, of course, we’d sing door to door on Christmas Eve followed by a big house party. I owe my love of music to her. She was not just my mom, she was also my best friend.”

Innovating Care for Dementia Announcing the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center at CPMC

Innovators inspire innovation. And now, the unique model for care of dementia offered by CPMC’s Brain Health Center is named for a local pioneer with international impact: physicist/engineer Ray Dolby, founder of Dolby Laboratories. Since it opened in 2012, the Brain Health Center, in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association, has treated more than 2,000 patients while helping their families find the best possible sources of information and support. By making the largest gift in CPMC’s history, the Dolby family has ensured this innovative service will be available far into the future. That’s the Power of Caring.
