Dear Friends,

The definition of Passion encapsulates perfectly this evening of music, men and message.

It has now been four years since the world premiere in Seattle of Jake Heggie’s For a Look or a Touch. Those of us who were there for that momentous occasion decided immediately that we had to bring it to San Francisco. It took four years to make that happen. It is the most passionate love story we have ever heard.
LEADERSHIP TEAM
When we began planning this program, we investigated all aspects of things about which we are intensely passionate. It came down to music, love and life.
Then we were given the amazing gift of a song cycle set to texts by Walt Whitman, a man some consider the greatest gay poet of all times — even though he lived in the 19th century. His poetry is filled with imagery about love and loving men, and it literally sings itself — with palpable passion. It was composed by SFGMC singer Steve Huffines. The final cornerstone of the evening came with a nod to contemporary communication - #twitterlieder - or "twitter songs." These 15 tweets take us on a roller coaster ride of emotions as they whisk us through an entire lifetime of passions - each with only 140 characters to tell its story! Tonight is a musical feast. We are so grateful you are here to share in it. And please come back in June to sing along with Elton John favorites! Passionately yours,
Steve Gallagher, membership president

FOR A LOOK OR A TOUCH: The Story Behind the Music One of the most compelling and heartbreaking stories in LGBT history is the murder of tens of thousands in the concentration camps during World War II. These stories remained hidden and virtually unacknowledged until the 1980s.

“When I looked for poetry or stories from the era, I was deeply upset to discover a vast silence,” says composer Jake Heggie. “Because homosexuality was against the law in Germany until 1970 - even after the camps were closed and the war over - gays stayed in hiding or got married, fled or tried to blend in. Not until the late 1970s did the literary and art world break the silence. Even in 2005, when the European Union's Parliament drafted a resolution regarding the Holocaust, any mention of the persecution of gays was removed.” After a research trip to the U.S. Holocaust Museum, Heggie saw the extraordinary documentary Paragraph 175 by San Francisco filmmakers Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. Under Paragraph 175 of the German penal code, gay men could be arrested for the crime of homosexuality. This code was not repealed until 1994.
Epstein and Friedman focused heavily on the story of Gad Beck, the last known Holocaust survivor persecuted for

FOR A LOOK OR A TOUCH: The Journey to San Francisco For a Look or a Touch, composed by Jake Heggie with libretto by Gene Scheer, first premiered in Seattle on May 7, 2007, through a commission from the Seattle-based organization Music of Remembrance. It was followed by a male chorus version commissioned by the Seattle Men’s Chorus and the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus with a premiere on April 2, 2011, at Seattle’s McCaw Hall featuring Morgan Smith, the baritone for whom the lead role of Manfred was written.
In attendance at the Seattle Men’s Chorus’ premiere was SFGMC’s Artistic Director Dr. Timothy Seelig who knew immediately this work must be presented in San Francisco. Seelig also knew he could not present this work without Smith in the lead role. Smith immediately agreed and Heggie, a San Franciscan, was thrilled at the prospect of bringing the work to his hometown. The challenge was scheduling and financing. Smith’s schedule was packed with international appearances and securing the right venue was important. The finances needed to mount this type of production was not something for which SFGMC was readily prepared. For the next three seasons, Seelig and his team would try to coordinate venue availability and Smith’s schedule, each time without success. After its Seattle premiere, For a Look or a Touch would be presented by Boston Gay Men’s Chorus and Heartland Men’s Chorus. Heartland’s production introduced a local film and stage actor, Kip Niven, in the role of Gad Beck. Niven’s passionate and moving interpretation was highly praised and when SMC once again presented the work this past summer and toured through Europe, they would unite Smith and Niven to play the central characters. In the meantime, the relevance of this work had spread. San Francisco residents Stephen and Diane Heiman heard of this work and approached Seelig with an offer to initiate an underwriting campaign. A generous gift from the Heimans in conjunction with a major event at the home of Ann and Gordon Getty, as well as SFGMC’s annual gala, Crescendo, raised the funds needed to mount the production. As SFGMC prepared for Season 37, Seelig and his team once again tried to align schedules - this time with success. Smith would play the role written for him and requested Niven to play opposite him. Now, after four years of planning and waiting, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Timothy Seelig, is proud to present the Bay Area premiere of For a Look or a Touch.
