Laura Benanti

Laura Benanti has brought her unique abilities to comedies, dramas and musicals since she took Broadway by storm at the age of 18, when she began her multifaceted career as Maria in The Sound of Music opposite Richard Chamberlain. Ms. Benanti earned the 2008 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her revelatory portrayal of Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy, opposite Patti LuPone and directed by Arthur Laurents. Her other Broadway roles include her Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-nominated performance as Candela in Women on a Verge of a Nervous Breakdown for Lincoln Center, Cinderella in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and her sultry Tony-nominated turn in Swing! She starred opposite Antonio Banderas as his muse in the celebrated revival of Maury Yeston’s Nine, and most recently Benanti received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Rosabella in The Most Happy Fella at City Center Encores! directed by Casey Nicholaw. Recently, Ms. Benanti completed a week-long engagement at the popular New York cabaret, 54 Below, for which The New York Times hailed her as a “supremely confident” performer whose “bright, full soprano, with its semi-operatic heft, can go almost anywhere.” The show won a 2014 Nightlife Award for Outstanding Major Cabaret Vocalist as well as a 2014 Broadway World Award for Best Female Celebrity Vocalist. In September 2013, she released her debut album, In Constant Search of the Right Kind of Attention: Live at 54 Below on Broadway Records to ecstatic reviews. On television Ms. Benanti recently received raves for her performance as Baroness Elsa Schrader in NBC’s The Sound of Music Live! starring Carrie Underwood. She starred in the NBC series The Playboy Club; Go On opposite Matthew Perry; and in the FX comedy series Starved. She has appeared in recurring roles on Nurse Jackie, Royal Pains, The Big C, Law & Order: SVU, and Eli Stone, and as a guest star on The Good Wife, Elementary and Life on Mars. On the big screen, she appeared in Falling for Grace, Meskada, and Take the Lead alongside Antonio Banderas. She currently resides in Manhattan.

Wendy Zachary, M.D., Director of CPMC's Hospitalized Elder Life Program (HELP)

THE POWER OF CARING IN SAN FRANCISCO

Hospitals everywhere are seeing a steady increase in episodes of delirium in elderly patients. Characterized by sudden severe confusion, delirium can cause harmful falls from which the patients never recover, often going from the hospital directly to a nursing home. Sutter Health’s CPMC is responding to this challenge with our Hospitalized Elder Life Program (HELP). Funded entirely by philanthropic gifts, HELP uses highly-trained volunteers to engage these patients through activities, regular walking, conversations and more. End result: Falls for these patients are down 22 percent and readmissions are down 25 percent. So to the many generous people who partnered with us to make this exceptional care possible, program director Wendy Zachary, M.D., says, “Thanks for the HELP!” Learn more about how you can invest in life-transforming work like this at cpmc.org/giving.

SFGMC Small Ensembles THE LOLLIPOP GUILD

The Lollipop Guild was founded in 1979 and is recognized as the world’s first openly gay small ensemble. Known for its light-hearted and upbeat style of a cappella singing, The Lollipop Guild has grown from a barbershop quartet into an ensemble that features over 20 of SFGMC’s finest singers.

VOCAL MINORITY

Vocal Minority was founded in 2003 during the Chorus’ landmark 25th anniversary season in honor of the small ensemble Vocal Minority that began in 1980. A select group of performers, Vocal Minority members guarantee to sing, dance, and - most importantly - smile their way into everyone’s hearts. With a repertoire ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, their unique brand of fun, quality entertainment is second to none.

SWAG

Formed in 2013, SWAG is the newest ensemble to emerge from the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and made their debut at the world premiere of I Am Harvey Milk. Their focus on the gospel, R&B, and pop genres brings a unique soulful beat to their performances that revels in the memories and music of the past 35 years of the SFGMC history while looking to the future with their energetic and uplifting performances!

Laying The Foundation For The Future The Legacy Society of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is comprised of donors who have thoughtfully designated SFGMC as a beneficiary of their will, trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy. In particular, we are thankful to have received very generous gifts in recent years from the estates of Bob Emery, Jerry Geller + Ken Sullivan, James H. Jones, William G. Stephens, and Archibald Wilson. Our Legacy Society members help to ensure the future of the chorus, and its philanthropy has many returns. To learn how you can include SFGMC in your estate planning, or to complete a Declaration of Intent, please contact Jon Carroll, SFGMC Managing Director, at 415-865-3650 Ext. 307 or info@sfgmc.org. About SFGMC Founded in 1978, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus was the world’s first chorus to have the word “gay” in its name. The Chorus made its first public appearance on November 27, 1978 at an impromptu memorial vigil on the steps of San Francisco City Hall for Mayor George Moscone and openly gay City Supervisor Harvey Milk, who had been assassinated that morning. In 1981, SFGMC’s nationwide tour led to the formation of many new choruses and an international LGBT choral movement. SFGMC has been a leader in commissioning of new TTBB music, and continues to develop repertoire for men’s choruses as well as for the gay and allied communities. The Chorus rose to meet and continues to fight against the global AIDS pandemic. Those lost to AIDS (the Fifth Section) number over 300 members. Since the Chorus’ birth, more than 1,650 members have served as goodwill musical ambassadors, promoting awareness and understanding of the LGBT community. SFGMC is a founder and member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, Inc. GALA Choruses is a not-for-profit organization serving the GLBT choral movement. The mission of GALA Choruses “is to support GLBT choruses as we change our world through song.” GALA Choruses is open to all GLBT and GLBT-allied choruses. Through workshops, festivals, and ongoing networking and administrative support services, GALA Choruses fosters the continued artistic and organizational growth of its member choruses. I closed my eyes, exhaled, and thought to myself: remember this. Remember floating above the hills of Tuscany. The people we met—the friends we made. And, discovering that, sometimes, the grass really is greener.

It’s funny, I don’t remember a single thing from our Celebrity cruise. I remember everything.
