WELCOME! I am delighted to welcome you to the inaugural celebration of the TBA Awards. This night has been a long time coming. Not just because a host of volunteers and staff has been working on the event for months, but because this new awards program has been in the works for literally a decade.
Over the course of this first season, some 200 of these adjudicators – a variety of theatre artists and administrators, “super patrons” and critics – assessed more than 180 productions at 78 theatres around the region, and submitted more than 3,000 ballots that resulted in the selection of tonight’s finalists and award recipients. This evening celebrates the artistic achievements of these theatre-makers. Tonight’s celebration also honors the whole amazing cohort of artists and companies that make up the theatre community of the Bay Area – by our count, the third largest in the nation. Theatre is an ephemeral art form. Tomorrow’s opening quickly turns to next month’s closing night. The universes that are created on our stages last for a matter of weeks, at best, then vanish. Awards, like the ones we will be witnessing tonight, are a lasting testament to the artistry and excellence that lives, for a moment, when theatre-makers converge to create art together. Thank you for being here tonight to add your applause as a resounding chorus, celebrating the art and artistry of theatre in the Bay Area. Cheers,
Brad Erickson Executive Director Theatre Bay Area

As we designed this awards system, we looked at other theatre awards programs around North America – the Joseph Jefferson Awards in Chicago, the Barrymores in Philadelphia, the Doras in Toronto, the Ovation Awards in Los Angeles. Our goal was to turn a spotlight on the outstanding quality of theatre-making in our region, to honor the artists and companies that create the work, and to raise the profile of theatre in the Bay Area. And we wanted to do that in a way that felt truly credible to theatre-makers themselves. What we crafted was a peer-assessed system that would deploy hundreds of adjudicators across nine counties.

Theatre Bay Area was founded in 1976 to serve the vital artistic community of the Bay Area, and is today the largest regional theatre service organization in North America, serving as a model for other service organizations around the country. Our mission is to unite, strengthen, promote and advance the theatre community in the San Francisco Bay Area, working on behalf of our conviction that the performing arts are an essential public good, critical to a healthy and truly democratic society, and invaluable as a source of personal enrichment and growth. The San Francisco Bay Area is the third largest theatre center in the country, with more than 400 companies in nine counties. The region boasts more theatre companies per capita than almost any other metropolitan area in the US, and is home to the third largest community of Equity (union) actors, following New York City and Chicago. Some 200 new plays are premiered here each year, many going on to wider success. Theatre Bay Area’s present membership reflects the thriving arts scene in the nine Bay Area counties, consisting of more than 365 theatre and dance companies, from multimillion dollar organizations to grassroots community groups; some 3,000 individuals, including actors, directors, designers, dance artists, playwrights, dramaturgs, technicians and theatre patrons; and more than 100 organizational members, from libraries and universities to theatre industry professional services.

OUTSTANDING
Celebrating outstanding achievement is what the TBA Awards are all about. Tonight marks an opportunity to celebrate the work of literally thousands of individuals in the Bay Area theatre community: actors, directors, choreographers, playwrights, composers, designers, dramaturgs, stage managers, dressers, follow spot operators, publicists, box office personnel, general managers, photographers, journalists, educators and so many more. This year we added to this lengthy but still incomplete list a new credential: TBA Awards Adjudicator! This new role does not (necessarily) grow the community because those who bear the title are already in the community, witnessing the work of their peers and making note of outstanding achievement. The TBA Awards examines the presentation of professionally oriented theatre production in the Bay Area. Part of the ongoing professional development of both companies and individual artists is the affiiation with national leaders including unions and guilds. Many of tonight’s finalists have made this commitment to their careers and we note this throughout the following pages with red asterisks representing the following professional memberships: * Actors’ Equity Association ** Stage Directors and Choreographers Society *** United Scenic Artists
While celebrating the finalists and award recipients at tonight’s event goes a long way toward recognizing the outstanding work that appears on stage and immediately behind the scenes continually throughout a season, it is still only one facet of the true excellence that exists in our community. To that end, as part of tonight’s ceremony Theatre Bay Area is pleased to inaugurate the TBA Legacy Awards, which honor extraordinary contributions to the Bay Area theatre community, reflecting the recipient’s body of work over time or a significant milestone in their professional journey. Tonight’s Legacy Award recipients are Joan Mankin, Jill Matichak and Steve Silver’s Beach Blanket Babylon. Congratulations to these outstanding representatives of the Theatre Bay Area community!
LEGACY AWARD
JOAN MANKIN A clown at heart and by profession, Joan Mankin was a member of both Make-A-Circus and the Pickle Family Circus, where she tumbled with fellow baggy-pants jesters. A nimble and fearlessly versatile actor, there isn’t a significant stage in the Bay Area that Mankin has not trod. She would regularly rendezvous with the Bard, strutting a trouser role when called for in The Taming of the Shrew at Cal Shakes, or playing for laughs in The Comedy of Errors at Shakespeare Santa Cruz. A former company member with the San Francisco Mime Troupe, Mankin was also happy to dip into modern comedy like Fuddy Meers at Marin Theatre Company, dramas such as Counter Attack with the senior group Stagebridge at Ashby Stage, and experimental fare like The Soldier’s Tale at Aurora Theatre.

WILL DURST Acknowledged by peers and press alike as one of the premier political satirists in the country, Will Durst has patched together a quilt of a comedy career; weaving national television and radio shows and commentaries, acting, writing, voice overs and stand-up into a hilarious patchwork of outraged and outrageous common sense. The New York Times says he’s “quite possibly the best political comedian working in the country today.” The New Yorker says “he’s perfected a verbal jitterbug of comedy and commentary.” He’s released four books, five CDs, writes a nationally syndicated humor column and is a frequent contributor on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and Current TV. Durst has told jokes in 14 countries, racked up 800+ television appearances, been fired by the San Francisco Examiner twice, PBS three times and despite blistering reproach, continues to squeeze ketchup onto his hot dog. willdurst.com

I closed my eyes, exhaled, and thought to myself: remember this. Remember floating above the hills of Tuscany. The people we met—the friends we made. And, discovering that, sometimes, the grass really is greener.
It’s funny, I don’t remember a single thing from our Celebrity cruise. I remember everything.
