WELCOME!

image: KAT WADE

We are thrilled to welcome you to the second annual TBA Awards Celebration. Last year’s inaugural event was an exuberant evening honoring the artistic achievements of literally hundreds of theatre artists in hundreds more productions around the Bay Area. Tonight’s ceremony follows our first year with more artists, more companies and more productions from around the region in the spotlight. At Theatre Bay Area we never tire of asserting that our region is home to one of the largest theatre communities in the nation. Tonight’s event reminds us that it is also home to extraordinary excellence in theatrical artistry. The artists and productions honored this evening are being called out by their peers for outstanding achievement. We are honored to be able to acknowledge them tonight. The TBA Awards are truly a work of the entire community of professionally oriented theatre across the region. More than 350 adjudicators, theatremakers themselves, attended more than 300 productions at 87 theatres and cast literally thousands of ballots over the past twelve months. These awards are administered by Theatre Bay Area, but they are very much a tribute from the Bay Area’s theatre community itself for the finest artistic achievement by the makers among its own ranks. We invite you tonight to raise a glass, to applaud, to cheer for those being honored for their work this past year. And we invite you, following another year of theatregoing, to join us next November as we gather again to celebrate the outstanding achievement of the extraordinary theatre artists of the Bay Area. Cheers,

Brad Erickson Executive Director Theatre Bay Area

THE TBA AWARDS The TBA Awards honor excellence in professionally oriented theatre, through a peer-based, Bay Area-wide adjudication process. Hundreds of adjudicators attend productions regularly and record their evaluations online. Each week, productions that meet a high voting threshold are named “recommended productions.” At the end of the theatrical season, all ballots are compiled, and the finalists and recipients in each award category are honored. Theatre companies participate in the program in one of three tiers: • Tier I: Companies that operate under Actors Equity Association (AEA) contracts and have an annual budget in excess of $1M must participate in Tier I. Companies operating with AEA contracts but with an annual budget below $1M may choose to participate in Tier I or Tier II. To qualify for an award, Tier I productions must be seen by a minimum of twelve adjudicators. • Tier II: Companies that operate under AEA contracts and have an annual operating budget of $400K or above. Companies operating under some AEA contract with an annual operating budget less than $400K may choose to participate in Tier II or Tier III. To qualify for an award, Tier II productions must be seen by a minimum of nine adjudicators. • Tier III: Companies in this tier have no AEA requirement and operate on an annual budget below $400K. To qualify for an award, Tier III productions must be seen by a minimum of six adjudicators.

LEGACY AWARD

JUDITH COHEN FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HANDFUL PLAYERS

Judith has been connected with theater in the Bay Area for four decades, since ushering at American Conservatory Theater when she was a Mills College student. Her love of theater has soared since then, to the point where she now attends 35 to 50 plays a year, subscribes to A.C.T., Magic Theatre and San Francisco Playhouse and provides annual philanthropic support to more than ten theaters. In 2006, Judith founded the children’s musical theater company Handful Players. Her intention was to launch the company as a three month volunteer effort and then return to running her business in corporate communications. But she found herself overtaken by the need and opportunity and Judith left the business world altogether to devote herself full-time to helping underserved children in San Francisco thrive through the transforming power of theatre. During the past nine years, Handful Players has commissioned 74 new short plays on social justice and culturally relevant themes from playwrights including Marcus Gardley, Lauren Gunderson, Chinaka Hodge, Andrew Saito, Eugenie Chan and Jeff Raz. The program’s young actors have performed 91 free community performances in and around the Western Addition at venues including Yoshi’s, San Francisco City Hall, the Main Public Library and the African-American Cultural Center. Since its inception, Handful Players has conducted over 2,700 hours of free theater workshops. The program currently works with a highly-diverse population of more than 700 children, of which 78% are African-American or Latino. A former C.P.A., Judith holds an MBA from Golden Gate University and a BA in sociology from Mills College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She has been an active board member for The One Act Theatre, YMCA - Embarcadero Branch and the San Francisco Chapter of the CPA Society. In 2015, Judith was awarded the Jefferson Award for Public Service by CBS San Francisco.

LEGACY AWARD

OAKLAND SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS

Oakland School for the Arts (OSA) is a public charter school founded in 2002 by then-Mayor of Oakland Jerry Brown and other civic leaders. It provides a conservatory-style arts education in a college preparatory setting, free of charge, to a diverse student body. Its students excel academically with SAT scores, high school graduation rates and college enrollment rates ranking very high among Bay Area public schools. OSA graduates have been accepted to many top arts institutions including Berklee College of Music, California Institute of the Arts, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornish College of the Arts, New York University, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, School of the Arts Institute of Chicago and Stanford University. As a community partner, OSA has played an important role in the urban renewal and revitalization of downtown Oakland as a vibrant arts district. Initially housed in portable classrooms, OSA moved in 2009 into the long-defunct Fox Oakland Theatre as the centerpiece of a $75 million plan to restore the 1920s-era former silent-movie house and return it to public use. Today, the Fox Theatre is home to OSA’s classes and theatre productions and is also a live concert venue serving downtown Oakland. OSA is also a fully functioning production company, offering a season of plays and special events that showcase the collaboration of faculty and students including original, student-devised pieces that have toured as far as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Oakland School of the Arts is led by Donn K. Harris, Executive and Artistic Director.

ABOUT THEATRE BAY AREA THEATRE BAY AREA was founded in 1976 to serve the vital artistic community of the Bay Area and today is the largest regional theatre service organization in North America, serving as a model for other service organizations around the country. Our mission is to unite, strengthen, promote and advance the theatre community in the San Francisco Bay Area, working on behalf of our conviction that the performing arts are an essential public good, critical to a healthy and truly democratic society and invaluable as a source of personal enrichment and growth. The San Francisco Bay Area is the third largest theatre center in the country, with more than 400 companies in nine counties. The region boasts more theatre companies per capita than almost any other metropolitan area in the US, and is home to the third largest community of Equity (union) actors, following New York City and Chicago. Some 200 new plays are premiered here each year, many going on to wider success. Theatre Bay Area’s present membership reflects the thriving arts scene in the nine Bay Area counties, consisting of more than 365 theatre and dance companies, from multimillion dollar organizations to grassroots community groups; some 3,000 individuals including actors, directors, designers, dance artists, playwrights, dramaturgs, technicians and theatre patrons; and nearly 100 organizational members, from libraries and universities to theatre industry professional services. 2015.11 • BAYSTAGES.COM
