Lesson 13 RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF CHILDREN (15 days) MAJOR CONCEPT Children, like any other citizen of the country, enjoy different rights since birth. The government ensures that the rights of children are protected and are not violated by anyone. Other people — parents, teachers and professionals — also make sure that children are provided with good education and a healthy environment to live in. All of these are done so that they may become productive citizens. I.

METHODS

A.

Preparation Study the dialogue on p. 182. Emphasize to the pupils that a child has a right to be loved. Ask the pupils, “How do your parents take good care of you?” Ask them how their parents provide their basic needs.

B.

Development of the Lesson 1. Have the pupils read pages 182-191 so that they can be aware of their other rights and duties. 2. Show pictures of different families to the class. Relate these to the rights and duties of a child. Ask the pupils how important is the family. 3. Have the class enumerate their rights and duties at home, in school, and in the community. 4. Discuss the need to respect their parents and other people. Ask the pupils to describe an ideal family. Have them read pages 182-187 of the textbook for them to have an idea of some of their rights and duties.

5. Discuss the rules that govern each child’s home. Ask them if they follow the rules that their parents set. Make them realize how important these rules are. 6. Discuss the other rights of children through the presentation of a short skit or role-playing. Have the pupils read pages 190-191 of the textbook. Ask them to compare each barangay in terms of cleanliness and peace and order. Ask them the importance of keeping one’s barangay clean, orderly, and peaceful. 7. Ask the pupils about the different projects in each of their barangay. Have a few students report to the class their involvement in some of the projects. 8. Have the pupils read page 184 of the textbook for them to know how to protect themselves from harm and danger. 9. Have the pupils tell something about the picture that shows a child eating nutritious food like fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and fish. Ask them to explain the importance of eating nutritious food. 10. Have the pupils present a short skit about the need to take care of oneself. Remind them to focus on any of the following reminders: a. Avoid danger and strangers b. Do not go out without any clothes on (especially girls) c. Be careful in handling sharp and pointed objects. d. Be careful when crossing the street. e. Study hard f. Avoid fighting with other children g. Help keep the community clean and peaceful h. Join in community projects like tree-planting and cleanliness programs i. Be a good citizen by obeying rules and regulations j. Use resources wisely 11. Have the pupils read page 189 of the textbook. Discuss the right of children to choose and practice their religion. Remind them that it is also their duty to follow the teachings of their religion. 43

Discuss the duties of the children in the community. Have the pupils analyze the pictures on pages 190-191 of the textbook. Ask them to discuss their duties to the community. Have them give other examples and instances when they do their duties to the community. Have the pupils do an activity called Dream-a-Theme. Ask them to close their eyes and imagine that they are teaching other children. After a few minutes, ask them to open their eyes. Have the pupils share what they have imagined. Tell them to focus on the lessons that they have taught. Let the pupils read altogether the Things to Remember on page 192. Let the pupils do Check Yourself on pages 184, 186, 1189, and 191. Every person has his own talents and skills that are different from other people’s. There are those who excel in sports, music, and acting. Others excel in academics. But whatever the talent of a person is, the most important thing to remember is that he or she should try to improve on it. A person who has special skills and talents can help his or her country immensely. He or she needs to develop these God-given talents.

Development of the Lesson 1. Do several activities to know the special talents or skills of the pupils. The following activity may be undertaken. Afterwards, discuss their experiences from doing the different activities. a. Ask the students who know how to play a musical instrument form a mini band and perform a song in class. 45

b. While the others are playing, ask the pupils who have a talent for drawing or painting to demonstrate what they can do. They can hold a mini exhibit after they have finished with their work. c.

Discuss how some famous and outstanding Filipinos use their time productively. Ask them of their ways to emulate these Filipinos. Tell them that there are people who help develop the talents of children. 9. Discuss how the pupils can improve on their skills and talents with the help of the government and the private sector. 46

Application of Skills 1. Ask the pupils to demonstrate in class their God-given talents. Invite other guests for the presentation of talents. 2. Tell the pupils to interview some people with special talents. Ask these people how they have developed their talents. 3. List down some modern day Filipino heroes.

4. Have the pupils ask their parents on how the government and the private sector assist children in improving their skills and talents. 5. Discuss in class what the pupils have learned from their parents. Point out that they can join the different programs of the government and the private sector in acting, sports, music, painting, and other fields. Tell the pupils that this is one way to improve their skills and talents.

Ask for the opinion of the class regarding the need to take care of themselves. Connect this with the idea of developing their skills and talents. Have the pupils explain the concepts enumerated in Things to Remember on page 204. Let the pupils do Check Yourself on pages 199, 202, and 203. Conduct a research or interview on the projects of the school and community in helping the children develop their talents.

Development of the Lesson 1. Begin the discussion by playing a game. Let the pupils guess whose picture the teacher will show to them. Use the pictures of outstanding Filipinos like Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Melchora Aquino, Josefa Llanes Escoda, Ninoy Aquino, Jr. While holding the pictures, give the pupils some hint by stating some of the characteristics of these Filipinos. 2. Have the pupils read pages 209-213 of their textbook. Discuss the different characteristics of outstanding Filipinos. Point out the heroic deeds and talents that they were known for that are worth emulating. 3. The teacher can do the same strategy to other outstanding Filipinos in other fields. Show pictures of outstanding Filipinos like Francisca Reyes-Aquino, Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo Tolentino, Carlos Botong Francisco. 4. As an additional discussion, have the pupils share who they think are outstanding citizens in their respective communities. Ask them why they think these people are worth emulating. 5. Have the pupils give examples of other Filipinos who are worth emulating and who they think are outstanding in their chosen fields. 6. Discuss the lives of Filipinos who excelled in their chosen fields. Focus on the field where they excelled in and how they became successful. Ask the pupils what traits of these Filipinos are worth emulating and what traits should be discarded or ignored, if any. 7. Have the class do the activities in Things I Can Do-A on page 215. A student will imitate one outstanding Filipino by describing or acting out his or her traits. The others will guess who is that particular Filipino.

Ask the pupils to give examples of Filipinos whom they admire and look up to at present. 5. Discuss the outstanding traits and achievements of these modern-day outstanding Filipinos. 6. Ask the pupils if they know anybody from the pictures on pages 216-221 of the basic text. Have them describe what they think are the characteristics of these outstanding Filipinos. 7. Discuss what characteristics should a person possess to be considered an outstanding Filipino.
