Understanding by Design (UbD) UBD is a teaching approach of the 21st century teacher for the 21st century learner The 21st century learner appreciates and utilizes visual content and is techno-savvy. The 21st century educational model • core subjects • key ideas • contains 21st century content • ICT literacy • life skills • implements 21st century learning assessment • learning, problem-solving, creative and critical thinking skills Designing for Understanding

Teachers are designers of curriculum and assessments. In following the expectations outlined in the curriculum, teachers are required to provide meaningful learning experiences for their students and determine students' needs in order to guide their teaching. They must also determine whether the goals of the students have been achieved. The teacher must focus on the learner's understanding of content and the ability to use the information rather than on the memorization of isolated bits of information. The new information focuses on "real life" or "authentic" tasks that require problem solving, creative thinking, and critical thinking. This approach requires teachers to structure what is addressed instructionally and in the curriculum around key ideas rather than try to "cover content". New tools and teaching methodologies have been developed to help classroom teachers meet the needs of their students. The use of multimedia technology in the classroom has been shown to be an extremely effective tool in addressing the learning needs of children. Traditionally, teaching and studying is aimed at information acquisition and grades but not understanding. Curriculum is rigid and teaching is text-book driven. Teachers have limited content knowledge and they usually teach what they wanted rather than what their students needed to learn. They also have limited ICT access and skills. Why Design for Understanding?
