A Samosa & Hot Sauce Experience When Bintou Toure, owner of Le Petit Dakar first moved to Victoria from Senegal Africa 15 years ago, she dreamt of opening a restaurant to share the cuisine and culture of West Africa in her new home city. Originally an academic in her adult life studying English Literature, and then Marketing, she then realized her heart had always been of an entrepreneur and restaurateur. Growing up in a large family with political ties, Bintou grew up loving to help in the kitchen when visitors were over. In her university life she would cook appetizers and meals that she would market and sell to her classmates. Bintou’s dream of opening Le Petit Dakar came eight years after moving to Canada, and with good reason. With only a couple other African restaurants in Victoria she wanted to do things right so that her new city also had a restaurant representing West Africa. Before opening she upgraded her English, studied culinary arts at Camosun College, tested the market starting at food festivals, and worked in the Victoria food industry for five years to gain more experience. “My concept is to not only bring the African food but also show how healthy it is,” explains Bintou. “Maybe the food is not fancy, but it is real, whole food.” The samosas melt in your mouth and the hot sauce will make your taste buds dance. The theme of passion and patience runs through this incredible journey to a dream. Everything is made from scratch daily at Le Petit Dakar without using additives or preservatives. Although West African food revolves around a lot of meat and fish, there are a few Vegan and Vegetarian options as well. “My passion is with food - you give me any ingredient and I can make it. Give me any type of food and I will cook it. That is how much I am passionate.” Senegalese food has travelled a lot and has made many international culinary influences due to the major Atlantic slave trade port in Senegal on Goree Island, The House of Slaves. For example, If you go to Louisiana in the USA you find Senegalese dishes like Seafood Gumbo and Jambalaya. Le Petit Dakar looks forward to serving you! “I am really grateful that the people in Victoria really support my business.” Download the Almost Free app to redeem this deal at Le Petit Dakar

Many herbs and spices make up Ethiopian cuisine. Berbere, deep red in colour and found in the red chilli aisle, is a main spice ingredient in dishes. Most recipes call for berbere mixed with other spices such as onion, ginger, garlic, and coriander. Most traditional Ethiopian cuisine is characterized by vegetables, spicy meat dishes like wot (spicy stew) served atop injera, a large sourdough flatbread. Customarily Ethiopian Food is eaten with hands using pieces of the injera flatbread. But don’t worry, Messob will still have cutlery for you. Just a few visits and you may be comfortable mastering the custom.

15th Annual Gala

This year Lifetime Networks Society will celebrate our 15th Annual Gala Dinner and Auction on June 9th. This is our major fundraiser and is an annual highlight for those who attend each year. We are pleased to have MAX Furniture and Wilson’s Transportation Group return as our Title sponsors. Country Grocer has returned as our dinner sponsor. 1550’s Pub style Restaurant and LA Limousine return for the 15th consecutive year. Because of all our supporters we can make a difference for families like this: “my daughter is living life more fully now than in any of the last 15 or so years. I attribute this in great part to the skilled, practical, emotional, and heartfelt support offered to her by the programs and staff at Lifetime Networks. As a mother, this means that I do not feel anxious about her during her days which are filled with engaging and meaningful work, and interactions with others. I can rest in the knowledge that she is well supported by people who care about her, and who have the skills needed to do the vital work of supporting special adults, who also have special needs”. 2018 Sponors: MAX Furniture, Wilsons Transportation Group, Country Grocer, 1550’s Pub Style Restaurant, LA Limousine, VAF, Collins Barrow, Flaman Fitness, Hot House marketing, Inclusion BC, Iron=Bell Fitness, Maximum Express, Smart Dolphins, The University of VictoriaSocial Science Department and Magicuts, Tammy Hatter–Royal LePage. Over the past 15 years together we have rasied over a half a million dollars. If you’d like to sponsor, make a donation or attend this year’ event please contact Carlene at 250 477-4112 or email Carlene@Lnv.ca.

colder this soup and the hotter the weather the better it is. Roughly chop the tomatoes, seed and chop the pepper, peel and chop the cucumber, peel and roughly chop the onion, and crush the garlic cloves. Place the vegetables, vinegar, and parsley in the blender with 2 Tbsp of the olive oil, and blend until extremely smooth. If needed or desired, add 4–5 ice cubes to the blender and blend again to crush the ice. Divide among four soup bowls, drizzle the remaining olive oil as a garnish, and serve immediately. This will keep in an airtight container for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

The classic negroni is not something to be trifled with. Bitter yet sweet, floral yet intensely flavorful, it is extremely well balanced. That said, adding a bit of Amontillado sherry for a drier flavor, or Oloroso sherry for a slightly sweeter and richer flavor, pulls all the pieces together for a delicious twist on this classic. Place all the liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes and stir. Strain into a tumbler-style glass and serve with a large ice cube. Garnish with a twist of orange and an olive.

F L AVOU R S

Emily Lycopolus, CEO of Olive the Senses grew up around food. Her family worked in the catering industry and that passion never left Emily even during a successful career in the health care profession. The start of Olive the Senses stemmed from two unique moments transforming Emily’s life into the international culinary field. In 200910 Emily and husband Steve lived and worked in Europe and had the opportunity to visit Steve’s family olive grove in Italy and learned the in’s and out’s about the health significance and safety of pure olive oil. Coupled with Emily’s allergy to nuts where trace amounts can be often found in imported olive oil, the dream of Olive the Senses began. The store doors opened in 2012 where customers could pick from over 40 extra virgin or flavour infused olive oils from all over the world imported by hemispherical growing seasons to ensure freshness. Olive Oil does expiry as it is like a fruit juice. The huge selection of inflows balamic vinegar is popular too among customers. Fast forward to 2018, and changes in the industry and store are at the forefront. A series of international cookbooks written by Emily have launched. The Italy and Greece cookbooks were the first in the season. Spain just came out featuring the recipes here and Syria hits shelves this August. The second edition of the Olive Oil and Vinegar Lovers cookbook comes out Spring 2019. The books are available in the store and online. Store changes and more online order and delivery options are on the forefront. Stay tuned for these changes!

From the Largest Wine & Spirits Festival in Europe, possibly the world… Prowein is THE place to go for serious professionals in the business By planes, trains and automobiles the entire wine world meets every Spring in Düsseldorf, Germany for Prowein. Prowein is the largest wine and spirts festival in Europe and could possibly be the biggest in the world. Exhibitors, visitors and professionals from all around the globe come together to buy, sell, make deals, and taste everything from wine, champagne, cognac, sake and much much more. When walking through the enormous arena of stalls, booths and tasting rooms, more languages are heard than spoken at the United Nations and yet the common language of wine brings them all together. One producer that stood out for me is no newcomer on the market. Hugel Pere & Fils located in Riquewihr, Alsace (FR) established in 1639 are considered to be pioneers of wine growing in the region. A wide array of lines ranging in varietal, flavour profile, wine making techniques and price are all worth discovering, and all assuring great quality. Being served by one of the Hugel sons himself, I start the tasting with the dry rieslings moving on towards the riper pinot gris and gewürztraminers with slightly more residual sugar as well as the dry reds. The sweeter rieslings come next and finally… drumroll please, the 1996 vendage tardive (late harvest) sweet wine containing 500 grams of sugar! Only 300 bottles were ever made and there has not been a single harvest sweet wine produced like this since 1988. It has been fermenting for no less than 20 years. Unfortunately you cannot get this specific bottle in your local wine shop, but you can get a wide range of other Hugel & Fils products suited for many occasions and price points. Hugel, like most Alsatian wineries, produce mostly white wine but you can find a selection pinot noir as well, so even if you are on “Team Red,” Hugel has a bottle for everyone. Some focus on biodynamic and natural wines, or modern winemaking techniques and the reduction of sulphites. Others who make the labels, write the export laws, and are restaurant owners. There is an array of other professionals all there working, searching, and sipping. There is a myriad of co-ops, small, innovative independent winemakers that are looking to expand and massive producers that already dominate the global market today. Even though this three day event called Prowein is THE place to go for serious professionals in the business of wine and spirits to meet, sign contacts, develop their entreprise, progress and grow in the industry, you can see many handshakes, passing of cards, and clinking of glasses closing “the deal” on the train ride home. Isn’t that always the case? The clinking of the glasses always proves to be the most important part in business. Especially at Prowein. 14

A GUIDED MEDITATION‌ Inspired by Thetis Lake

BY VICTORIA JOHNSON Inspirational Speaker, Writer, & Life Coach

Deep in the center of my mind there is a place of pure love, and everlasting peace. This place of beauty is whole, protected and easily accessible. In my minds’ eye I see a lake and trails that wind through the forest surrounding this body of water. I can enter this scene by reaching for a thought, sometimes for just a quick glimpse, other times for a limitless state of tranquility. I am strong and grounded, understanding that everything good comes from love, and that I can return to love, any time I choose. Taking a deep breath in, my mind is clearing the path to access my sanctuary. After exhaling completely, my lungs naturally draw in the pure air needed for my journey. Pausing everything else, I continue to breathe. I can now visualize the first glimpses of the place in my mind that embraces my natural haven. I can draw on this feeling wherever I am, and in whatever situation I may find myself. Standing at the top of the hill that leads down to the pathway, I am motionless. I continue to focus on my breathing, inhaling a slow deliberate expansion of my thoughts, exhaling any negativity that has been holding me back. I repeat this process until I feel like all the darkness I was storing has been released. My breath is deep and intertwined with thoughts of pure gratitude. I am appreciative for all of the days of my life. I know that each moment has served me in some way. I remember that in every situation, I can choose to return to the lake, my quiet church. My place of reverence is only a thought away. The branches of the trees display leaves that are bright with the colors of autumn. Bursts of green, red, orange, and gold reach my vision before the calm blue water that lies serenely behind the trees. The still water calls to me, reminding me of the stillness of my soul, renewing an assurance in my being that all is well in my world. When the sun is bright, diamonds appear to dance across the water,

16

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | SPRING 2018

shimmering and vibrant. There is an awakening. My thoughts are alive and creative. These thoughts continue to transform, this time morphing into solid inspiration to guide me while fulfilling my life’s purpose. Encouraged, I take a few more moments to focus on my breathing. I visualize in great detail all that I aspire to achieve in every area of my life. I visualize happiness and harmony for everyone close to me, and for those I will never meet. Holding myself in this place of service, I feel blessed. I know that it is in giving that I receive. When the sun is hidden behind the clouds and the water appears grey, my thoughts turn inward for a time of deeper understanding and reflection. I recall a situation in my life where I would have chosen to respond differently. Examining this situation, I release all guilt and criticism, instead looking only for the lesson to help me better understand the circumstances. I think of the other people involved in this scenario, and I forgive them and release them. They were doing the best they could, with the understanding that they had at the time. This is a place for growing, a place for healing, and ultimately a place for forgiveness. In the releasing and forgiving of the other person, I am able to forgive myself and release all undesirable patterns that have formed around this circumstance that now, only exists in the past. Love exists here now. I can move forward with peace. I am sheltered here. The trees provide protection from the wind, the rain and the sun. No matter what storm surrounds me, I can trust myself to return to this place and to know that I am safe here. When I am ready to contend with the storms of life, I can do so with love, and with words so gentle that they calm even the most torrential storms. This is my place of strength, my place of renewal. The beauty of nature fills my innermost being, creating a warmth in my soul, lightness in my step, and love in my heart.

I can see signs of destruction and loss of life around me, but my vision is divinely guided allowing me to only absorb what is honest and true. I naturally see the good in, and expect the best of every situation. In this way, unhelpful paths can be replaced by passageways so magical that they consume my senses. Love is bountiful and effortless. A burst of fresh air blows across the lake and reaches me. This air is so alive it feels wet in my lungs and awakens the energy inside me; an energy that recognizes that I am part of something more. I continue to expand my lungs, breathing in and out slowly and methodically. The trail, which can be wet and difficult in one season, and dry and hard in another, is padded with leaves that have fallen from their home above and are now providing a soft cushion on which I walk. I tread lightly through my life, leaving a legacy of goodness for all who share my path to enjoy and partake. My steps are soft in this great forest, it is as if the ground beneath me is rising up to meet me, to welcome me, to support me in my journey through life. The temperature adds to the stillness in the air. It is as though all time has stood still allowing me to behold all that is around me, and all that I am. I love and accept my physical body just as it is today. I know that it supports me perfectly. I am grateful and appreciative for all that is does for me, each moment of my life. I treat my whole self with reverence, releasing the need for and self-criticism or sabotage. My strong body and loving mind carry me forward to a spiritual place where I spend more and more time. It is as if I am alone in this mystical place, yet supported by all of creation. I can clearly hear my own thoughts - included in them, a calling that there is something more than I can explain. A calling for something greater than myself, larger than all of us; a universal life force that brings us all together in an enhanced state of being.

I consciously join my energy with that force. I am strong, I am independent, although I am never truly alone. It is impossible for me to be separate from all that is real and separate from love. I have a clear understanding that all good comes from love, and all disharmony comes from fear. I easily recognize and free myself from all fear-based behavior. I have become a witness, an observer. I search for beauty and find it effortlessly. Blissful living is my natural state of being. I continue to examine my thoughts. I am relaxed and open to receive the gifts that are intended for me whilst I pass through this life. I am divinely guided to choose my thoughts, my words and my actions from love, contributing to the healing of myself and of the planet. All who walk this path with me are a part of my journey, and I am a part of theirs, we are one, we are all the same, we are all connected. Thoughts of gratitude open my mind to hear the beautiful symphony of creative concepts, philosophies, and forgiveness that are always available to me, just a thought away. As I come around a corner, the fog sits low on the water. I feel my deepest losses here but understand them with clarity. I am grateful to everyone who has shared in my life. Those who have passed on, or have simply passed through my life, are often with me in this place. I see signs of them, a turtle, or a heron, a butterfly, or a sky that is dark and low. I observe the way the small vines and willows cling to the more mature trees, wrapping themselves around the stronger tree for support and stability. It is here I remember that there have been times in my life when I have been the more mature tree, and have used my roots to hold myself up and to encourage the growth in others. I remember the times in my life when I was the willowy vine holding tightly onto people whom I believed to be stable, depending on them for what felt like my very survival, putting my trust in them. I remember both of these times with gratitude, knowing that all that I have experienced in my life has been for my greatest good. Although I have been hurt, and put my trust in the people who did not always care for it as tenderly as I had intended, I know that the experiences helped my roots to grow deeper. Eventually I became stronger, more resilient and less impacted by the storms as they approached and eventually passed by me. I am deeply grounded in the knowledge of who I am, and what is important in my life. As I climb upwards, the trails cut into the hills, and reach the summit. This is a place where the sun is always shining, warming the massive dark colored boulders that form the rock face to the water below. I sit on the heated dry platform for a few minutes of silent meditation. Again, I am focusing on my breathing, absorbing in the bright and powerful light of the Universe, and allowing it to flow through my body. I absorb inspiration and embrace an energy that is deeply insightful. Intuition flows freely as if the sunlight combines with the colors of the trees and the water, creating a prism of light that illuminates me from head to toe. This light opens up, clears each of my chakras, balances my soul. My eyes have been opened. The light is beckoning me to really see what life holds for me. It guides me to awaken, to know that everything I could ever desire is available to me, to know that I am enough just the way I am. I am perfect, I am ready to answer the call, I am willing. I continue to breathe in this healing light. I abandon all ego-based thinking and my thoughts become as clear as the clean mountain water. My senses are on full alert, my vision and my hearing no longer impaired by negativity. I hear nothing, and I hear everything. In the distance there is the whispering of something more that is building to a crescendo that can be heard by anyone who has opened their mind and heart to the call of serving others; all while living a gentle yet powerful life.

As I meander the winding shoreline I never have to search for my path. Somehow, I never lose my way as long as I keep moving forward. It is like the serene reflection on the lake resembles the quiet reflection occurring in my body, neither of us leading nor following. My mind and soul are faithfully trusting that I am continuously where I am intended to be, moving in the right direction, always safe, eternally protected. My soul is full, overflowing with love and simple appreciation. I know that it is safe to give, because the supply of love knows no limits. A Cat Named Gary BY JENNY HAINSWORTH AULD

Painting by Jenny Hainsworth Auld. Collection of Walter Chiang “Where should we go for drinks?” I asked Prithvi. We were overdue for hanging out, stressed from work, and he needed me to look over his application to some university in Norway. Taipei was wearing him down, and returning to India, he said, was not an option. “How about K House in Ximending,” he said, “that outdoor place, with the cute bartender?”

roaring scooters. I turned left at a darkened bakery into Guofu Street and presently found the address of my B and B. At the top of a staircase, my host appeared in the doorway. “Jenny? Ni hao.” He smiled. “I’m Jiang.” “Wan shang hao,” I panted. “Nice to meet you.” “Sorry – my English isn’t very good.”

“You can’t be sure he’ll be there, you know.”

“It’s better than my Chinese” I said, as I took off my shoes and slipped on the proffered pair of house shoes.

“He’s always there. But also they have that drink special.” “True. Okay, meet you at Ximen station.” We stayed out too late, and I missed the last train to Linkou, where I was staying for a couple of months to teach weekend classes at the gallery. So we caught a cab to Prithvi’s tiny flat. I curled up on the edge of his bed, grateful for his working air conditioner, and fell asleep. In the morning I skittered down the four floors of concrete stairs and pushed open the door into the street. I drank a coffee at 7-11, got a train to Taipei Main Station, and emerged into the tangled rushing rivers of people. I stood against a wall to think. If I went back to Linkou now to change clothes, I would run out of time. I wouldn’t see anything else of Taiwan before going home to Canada. I had to leave the city now, just as I was. Which was slightly smelly. At the ticket window in the great hall, I learned there was a train to Hualien, on the east coast, leaving in a couple of hours. I booked a seat, bought snacks, and rehearsed the route to platform four. Soon I was aboard, hurtling out of the city. Towns, villages, neon signs, farms, rivers, colossal statues of gods and goddesses, flew past. Dreaming expanses of flooded rice fields like mirrors, reflecting entire mountains. I saw a tiny temple to the god of fields, orange and gold, punched like a shining button into the blue-grey evening.

Jiang showed me around the place. He pointed out the door to the other guest’s room, then mine. “Here is the wash-room, for you and the other guest. Here, TV room. And here are my cats!” He grinned. “Hello, cats.” Jiang switched on the TV and curled up with one of the cats. I took a shower, and dressed again in the same t-shirt and skirt. It was too early to go to sleep. I slipped out of the flat and went off to explore Hualien a bit more. First, I located the nearest 7-11. A word about 7-11 in Taiwan: it’s not quite the same as in Canada. In Taiwan, 7-11 is a bastion of all that is wonderful, an oasis in the scorching heat, a haven at any hour of the night, where nothing bad can touch you. There is always somewhere to sit down and collect your thoughts. You can load your transit card at the counter. Most importantly, it would be a place to get a coffee very early in the morning on my way to Taroko National Park. Presently I realized that I had walked too far in one direction. I looped back to the train station, and caught a taxi back to Jiang’s place. I stumped wearily up the staircase. All was dark in the living room, but there was a light under Jiang’s door.

I arrived in Hualien City after dark. I walked from the station along a street buzzing with bright lights, restaurants open for supper, and Presenting Enriching, Affordable Experiences: Almost Free

I switched on the light in my room, and immediately noticed something odd: a puddle in the middle of my bedspread. I looked at the ceiling. No sign of a leak. What was that liquid? Oh. Oh, no. I knocked on Jiang’s bedroom door. He opened it and looked quizzically at me. “Duibuqi -- uh – one of the cats. . . sorry but. . . come see?” I led him to my room and pointed at the puddle on the bed. “Zenme le?” “I think one of the cats peed on the bed.” There was no other way to say it. “My cat did? Shenme shihou?” “Earlier this evening, while I was out.” “Which cat? Gary??” “I – don’t know if it was -- Gary.” “White cat?” I shrugged. “Bu zhi dao.” Even if I did know, I didn’t want to snitch on the poor thing. I was confused as to how it was relevant, under the circumstances, which of the cats had relieved itself on my bed. But I was glad Jiang asked, so that I could live my life knowing that somewhere in Taiwan was a cat named Gary. I left the next morning, assuring Jiang that there were no hard feelings, and went to Taroko National Park. I took the shuttle from the visitor center into the mountains. I was the only passenger. I saw a shrine in the distance lodged into the side of a vast mountain. Under the shrine cascaded a white waterfall. The shuttle threaded around hairpin curves of the mountainside, revealing more splendors with each turn. I stopped taking pictures. I laid my head against the window and looked out. The beauty was otherworldly. Not long after I returned to Victoria, Hualien suffered series of earthquakes and aftershocks – ninety-eight in total in a span of a couple of days. I thought about Jiang and Gary, and hoped they were okay. Jenny Auld is a Victoria-based artist and writer. She shows her work locally and at Art Sui Gallery in New Taipei City, Taiwan. MAKING A THE MOST OF YOUR FOOD BUDGET BY JEN PATERSON & SAIRA WATERS Co-Founders of Dollar Divas

A question that people often get asked is, “What is your favourite food?” and for me this is nearly impossible to answer. I love food! I love eating, I love the atmosphere around a cozy dinner table packed with delicious dishes and I love that feeling that washes over me the moment I take the first bite of something truly amazing. Now having said all of that, if I gave into my culinary desires every time I had a craving, I would eat through my entire spending monthly allotment in about a week. So what are my favourite ways to make my dollars stretch a little so I can indulge? Read on and you’ll find out. Get Crafty with your Meat - Meat is one of the most expensive items that you can purchase at the grocery store. It’s not something that I want to give up and I don’t want to compromise on the quality just save a buck. So when I’m cooking with ground meat in a spaghetti sauce or a casserole I will use half the meat that the recipe calls for and supplement with beans or lentils. These can be purchased for a fraction of the price and are packed with wonderful vitamins and nutrients. Shop the Perimeter - Have you ever noticed that grocery stores all have very similar layouts? This is because incredible amounts of time and money have been spent studying human habits in order to get you to spend the most when you walk through the door. For example, when most people enter the grocery store they tend to turn right. This is where all the produce is, they fill their cart with their fruit and

veggies and then when they hit the cookie aisle (whether consciously or not) they feel good about themselves and grab that bag of expensive cookies. How do you avoid these psychological pitfalls? Shop at the perimeter, what I mean by this is to hit the outside aisles of the store. This is where most of the ingredient type foods are. Fill your cart with these to avoid expensive packaged foods and save a bundle. Keep Away from Items at Eye Level - There are some things that are in the middle ailes that can’t be avoided so when you do have to venture down them stick to the items that are above eye level and are around your feet. Most of those items that don’t have the name brand labels are produced in the same factories as your brand name favourites. Did you know that certain products will pay an extra fee to the grocery store to be stocked at eye level? Generally, human beings on the whole are pretty lazy so we will grab whatever item we see first. Staying away from those products will help save you from paying more than you need to. Look at Price Per Unit - If you are looking at two different products the key is not to look at how much each item costs as a whole but to look a little closer at the price label. On every single one you will find the price per unit. This is going to be a much more efficient way to comparison shop. For example, if you are comparing two bags of sugar that are 1kg and 2kg respectively.

If you buy the 1kg bag you are paying $3.79/ kg of sugar and if you buy the 2kg bag you are paying $2.25/kg of sugar. The bigger bag is the better deal. Most grocery stores will put this info right on the price tag, you just have to look a little bit closer. Buyer beware, bigger items are only a better deal if you are going to use what you buy. If you are going to throw away ½ of it, then stick with a smaller bag. Throwing away food is never cost effective. Food is a wonderful part of life and constantly depriving yourself of delicious things is no way to live. Yet you don’t need to go into debt in order to eat well. Applying just one of these tips to your weekly food shopping habits can help keep your wallet and your plate full. Both the external and internal programs follow the same guidelines: remove the inflammation and potential allergens from the tissue, support for a healthy bacterial balance, and support the natural functions of the elimination organs through whole ingredients. The Miiko Skin Co Reboot challenge launched April 3rd and runs until April 30th. The company will run the Reboot 1-2x per year as a free service for their customers to build a supportive community around healthy habits and learn what the skin is telling us - whether it is through blemishes during a hormonal fluctuation or a healthy glow after the Reboot! Top 10 Local Places to Enjoy Live Entertainment While Dining Out BY DEENA KINARTHY Writer & Consultant Throughout this past month, in honor of our final culinary-themed print issue, the staff and I here at Almost Free Magazine taste-tested various restaurant food and drink menus, while we hunted for local, quality live entertainment venues. After visiting several places, we compared and ranked restaurants, cafes, or pubs, based on several criteria including: the quality of their menus, variety and quality of live entertainment and special events, level of support for artists, musicians, and the broader community, unique location, and accessible prices. We considered many places, but the ones that made the cut for the column were our favourites, each offering something unique. We hope you get out and enjoy some of these places as much as we did!

Bard & Banker

An oldie but a goodie. Although the pub incarnation is relatively new (opened in 2008), the historical building has a rich history, first opening in 1885 as the Bank of British Columbia. The Public House is named aptly after the bank, as well as the bard and poet, Robert Service, an Englishman who is often referred to as the Bard of the Yukon. Robert Service eventually made his way to Victoria in 1903, and is best known for his poems, "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee". The Bard & Banker also serves Robert Service beer on tap from Phillips Brewery, which is hard to find in town. On their website, they prominently display the tagline, “it’s all about service”, which is cheekily an homage to the Bard, but also is an accurate reflection of their quality customer service.

Location: 1022 Government St. Victoria BC Menu style: Dynamic menu features dishes spanning from classic pub fare favourites, to unique west coast inspirations, and beyond. Something on the menu to try: Their local oysters Signature or My Favourite Drink: Robert Service beer Prices: $$-$$$ A little pricier than some places, but not inaccessible. Vegetarian/ gluten-free options/ other: Several veggie options such as the roasted vegetable burger, appetizer hummus in a jar, and Kale and quinoa salad. Additional vegetables can also be added to your meal for an extra cost. Gluten-free options are not listed on their regular menu. Special Kid’s menu Live Entertainment: One of the few places in Victoria offering live music 7 days a week, no cover charge, with mostly local bands and a few out of town guests from the surrounding islands and mainland. The stage is set up near the front entrance, looking out over the entire multi-level space. This place has great acoustics, and the staff are quite friendly. www.bardandbanker.com

Public Market at the Hudson

The Public Market at the Hudson Building (formerly the Eaton’s building), is a great place to grab breakfast or lunch and enjoy live music. The best thing about the market is the variety of food options, there is really something for everyone. Sutra makes excellent East Indian cuisine, Taco Stand al Pastor has delicious Mexican food, the French Oven Bakery offers fresh baked goods, and they are home to the only vegan butcher in Victoria, Very Good Butchers. For a full list of their vendors please visit https:// victoriapublicmarket.com/vendors/ One thing to note: they close by 6pm Mon – Sat, and 5pm Sundays, so I’d recommend going there for breakfast or lunch, instead of dinner. Live Entertainment: Every Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday from 12-2pm their stage is lit up with solo artists or dynamic duos. The music is acoustic, stripped down guitar, bass, and keyboards, with pleasing vocals. All the artists are local.

ARTS &

entertainment

Movie night at the Hudson happens on the last Wednesday of every month starting at 7pm. They pull-down a large projector screen and set up around 30 chairs. However, people are welcome to bring their own chairs, as they have capacity for more. At the end of March, they are playing the classic film, Rain Main. Entry to the movie night is by donation to a selected local charity, which changes monthly. April’s featured movie is Jumanji (the new version), which will be screening on April 25th at 7pm. Cooking demonstrations in the community kitchen—Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 12-2pm. Brought to you by GoodLife Fitness, the focus is on healthy meals. This recurring event is totally free! They also occasionally host larger events throughout the year such as Beer Week and Island Knits Spring Popup Fibre Market happening Saturday April 14th 11am-3pm at the Hudson Market.

Heron Rock Bistro

For the foodie and live music fan, this is a quaint treasure, serving fine dining and live entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere, tucked in a corner of James Bay. Menu Style: In true bistro form—the menu is French style, quality ingredient driven, simple, but very well put together food. The chefs here are not afraid of butter and cream. Signature Drink or My Favourite: I am a huge fan of the Caesars. I was delighted in finding out there are several variety of Caesars to choose from here. Heron Rock Bistro’s Caesar’s are all made with Walter's All Naturel Clamato (a high quality, Canadian-made product). There’s everything from the classic vodka Caesar, to their Beefeater, Bacon and Blue Cheese Caesar or Dill Pickle Cesear. Yum! Be sure to also check out their extensive wine selection too. Vegetarian/ gluten-free options: Yes, some. Live Entertainment: Live Music 3 nights a week. Monday, Friday and Saturday. 7-10pm. Blues, Gypsy Jazz, Funk and Soul. Artists: Just some of the amazing, local artists that play at Heron Rock and Crooked Goose include: Reuben Weir, Kelly Fawcett, Skyla and Oz, Julian Mulhall, Kiaran McMillen, Devon McCagherty, Clark Brendon, Al Pease, Paul Laverick, Mike Demers. The stage is set up underneath the wine rack, and the musicians are well integrated into the scenery. Listening to good quality live music

Darcy’s Pub

Darcy’s Pub made the list because of a few reasons. First, they have great vegetarian menu options that go beyond the usual veggie burger and fries. Second, for the craft beer lovers out there, they offer mini beer samplers of several local breweries. Not to mention, they have a decent whiskey list. Third, they have two locations, one downtown Victoria, and one in the Westshore with unique events happening at each. Catch regular cover bands play downtown every day of the week. Musical styles range from top 40, to party favorites and 90’s hits (like Sublime, the Killers, Greenday), to classic rock, soul, funk, jazz, and new country. Literally something for everyone! Canoe Brewpub

Great food, great location, great atmosphere, and stellar regular live music four days a week! What’s not to love about this place? Canoe Brewpub is one of my newest favorite spots to come with friends on a sunny summer day for a late dinner on the patio. Voted Victoria’s #1 patio, the view majestically looks over the wharf and water. After dinner, you can move into the pub to listen to the bands play, or gather round the stage and put on your dancin’ shoes! Although, I love being stage front where the action is, for those looking for a quieter conversational atmosphere, they also have a more intimate dining room. Menu Style: West Coast Inspired Menu. Built using quality, local ingredients that are seasonally–inspired. Signature Drink or My Favorite: They have their own line of beers, brewed on site. Staff favorite is the WEST COAST: A dry-hopped pale ale. An expression of Pacific Northwest hop character, balanced by robust Canadian

2% Jazz

Because I just had to include a coffee shop on this list. 2% Jazz arguably makes the best espresso in town. And who doesn’t like to support local coffeemakers? The best thing about 2% Jazz is that they are a huge supporter of local artists, arts organizations, and the broader community. In fact, they rent out their shop for community and special events, and even offer up coffee service if organizers want to add that to their gathering. Last year they hosted a big Women in Science seminar, encouraging young women to enter the industry. Interesting in booking an event? Email General Manager, Tristan Bacon at info@2percentjazz.com.

Located right across from the Belfry Theatre, and next door to the Fernwood Community Centre where Theatre Inconnu shows often take place, the pub is a great place to go for dinner before a show, or drinks after a show. Not only that—they regularly host the popular Paint Nights, a ticketed event where the public can learn to paint-by-route from a qualified instructor. Paint nights present a chance to mingle with friends, while sipping on drinks and being creative. Bonus: you get to take home your painting at the end of the night. Drum roll, please… And the number # 1 spot goes to Northern Quarter

#1

This place has earned its number one spot on our list for a few reasons: they have quality entertainment nearly every day of the week and generally don’t charge cover. Their menu is fresh, and gourmet-style food with flair, for very reasonable prices. At each dining experience, the service was attentive and speedy, yet the staff didn’t rush us out the door. On a particular blues evening, we arrived around 8pm for dinner and stayed for the entire show afterward. In total we were enjoying the live music and dinner for about four to five hours. They have a good selection of local spirits and craft beers such as Phillips Electric Unicorn IPA and Driftwood Cry Me a River Gose on tap. However, while I enjoy craft beer, I’m more of a cocktail gal. My instant metre stick for a place that offers cocktails is to order a Manhattan with bourbon. At Northern Quarter, they have a twist on the classic

Manhattan called a Black Manhattan that has bourbon, averda, and chocolate bitters. It is quite tasty, if you like bourbon and chocolate—I’ll have another, please! Menu Style: Local, seasonal, flavourful ingredients. Vegetarian/ gluten-free options: Definitely has several vegetarian-friendly options such as their fried eggplant (appetizers), and a chickpea veggie burger (arguably the best veggie burger in town). May have to inquire about gluten-free options, not listed on menu. Signature Drink or My Favourite: Black Manhattan Prices: $-$$ Supportive of Community: The general manager, Benji, used to run Lucky Bar and is very involved in the music scene in Victoria. The staff and owners are huge supporters of musicians and local artists. A really unique thing they do here--except for major ticketed events-- on any given night, instead of a cover charge for the performances, the staff leave little white envelopes on every table for patrons to tip the bands directly. 100% of the proceeds go to the band. If you like the show, you just put cash in the envelop, and they go around and collect them throughout the night. Live Entertainment: You can catch everything from stand-up comedy, to blues and jazz duos, bluegrass bands, Latin beats, quiz nights, to open mic and karaoke nights. For their full event listings, which change weekly, visit: www.northernquarter.ca/newevents/ or pop by the restaurant. Location: 1724 Douglas Street. Conveniently across from the Hudson Public Market. Unassuming exterior, however, can pack a large number of tables in the dining area. The stage is raised, located at the far end near the entrance and there is even space in front for dancing, which happens quite often at live shows!
