CHANGING the game…

Peter Baljet GM in Duncan, BC, has one employee who continues to change the game. Chelsea Metcalf is one of the only females in the automotive sales industry on Vancouver Island. From the Cowichan Valley, she has been selling vehicles locally for over five years and has built an extremely loyal client base. Chelsea’s overwhelming success comes from her customer first approach. The dealership’s clients now request to deal directly with her for what they call a “refreshing, calm and truly enjoyable experience.” Chelsea has other local dealerships reconsidering their hiring practices as every month Peter Baljet gains clients to one of the only females in the business. So why are women more important now than ever in the sales position for dealerships? Here’s why. Generation Y is moving into the car market for big numbers. They are different than Traditionalists, Boomers and Generation X before them. They are the fastest growing segment of today’s workforce. In a survey of 1,000 female Gen Yers:

*96% list being independent as their most important life goal

Chelsea Metcalf, Sales Representative

*87% define success as being able to shape their own future

If you are in the market for any new or pre-owned vehicle of any make or model, we strongly encourage you to call Chelsea and see for yourself what kind of impact a female can have on your car-buying experience. Chelsea’s approach with clients is noticeably different from the moment you meet her. A recent customer of Chelsea’s, Christina Jones, heard about Chelsea through a group of friends when explaining the challenges she has experienced in shopping for a vehicle. Salespeople’s lack of product knowledge, the impersonal experience and high pressure tactics were a few things about shopping that left Christina wondering where to turn. Christina was put into contact with Chelsea and had this to say when interviewed for this article, “Wow, the experience with Chelsea was truly the exact opposite of what

other dealerships had offered me. She took the time to ask the right questions about me, my work, lifestyle and most importantly she LISTENED.” These reviews are the kind you find written about Chelsea by her “sold” client base. She is changing the customer’s experience and opinion one client at a time. If you are in the market for any new or preowned vehicle of any make or model, we strongly encourage you to call Chelsea and see for yourself what kind of impact a female can have on your carbuying experience.

letter from the editor In reflecting today, with the Holiday issue almost to print, I find myself searching for peace of mind (fitting that we have a new column about finding peace in this issue). Life isn't about the grand gestures, fame of accomplishments, or "BIG" moments. Not for me at least. It's about the little everyday things in showing support to loved ones, being accessible and present, opening a door for someone, sharing a meal with a friend, smiling at a senior who is also smiling and enjoying his afternoon walk, and connecting on a deeper level of everyday enjoyments, laughter, dreams, fears, challenges, and reflection. Life is... , and can be special everyday. I wish you all everyday special moments, this season, and ongoing. Enjoy this issue with a sneak peek of Vancouver Island Almost Free, launching February 1.

BY VICTORIA HOLMES, Inspirational Speaker, Writer, Life Coach

Have you been making resolutions—officially or unofficially— for as long as you can remember? Were they full of selfcriticism and admonishment? Maybe they were a simple reproof or an entire list of self-imposed short comings that you were sure to rectify in the upcoming year. Maybe you were kind to yourself and only imposed a mental list of things you ‘should’ do. In the past, I have tried all of the above—and they didn’t work. This is the year to drop all self-criticism and stop comparing ourselves to others. It’s time embrace everything that is amazing about ourselves and spend the year celebrating our magnificence!

The New Must-Have Resolutions:

1. Love yourself more: Believe that people love you and that you are valued. Stop all self-criticism, yes, all of it. Treat yourself as you would your best friend. When was the last time you told your best friends they were fat/lazy and didn’t have enough money saved? 2. Do what makes you happy and forget about what you “should” be doing if it is not essential for your well-being. Go to performances, take mini vacations, walk on the beach, take photos, have coffee with your friends. 3. Believe that all the money you need is flowing to you. Worrying about money creates an attitude of lack, worry, and jealousy. Money will always show up for the things you need when you let go of negative thinking around money. Trust that you always have what you need. 4. Send more time in appreciation of nature. During this time of reflection feed your mind healthy thoughts that build you up and inspire you. 5. Spend quantity time with your family, laugh, and tell people you love them. Yes, I said quantity. 6. Start and end each day with time for you. Whether it is two minutes or 20, we can all make this happen…even if it is before you open your eyes in the morning and after you close them at night. Wisdom takes place in your own mind—spend some time there. 7. Eat food that is alive. Treat your physical body better than you would your vehicle. Stop criticizing your body. Start appreciating it (and thanking it) for everything it does for you from waking up in the morning, breathing, and digesting your food to supporting you in exercise, daily routines and in relaxation.

Halloween is over, we have taken time to REMEMBER, Thanksgiving in the USA is almost here and that means it's time to start thinking about THE holidays! Before you go dashing through the dough let me give you some hints to make your season brighter and a bit lighter on your wallet! Have you ever felt less than satisfied after all the company has gone, the paper has been recycled and you are tempted to throw your credit card in with the tree chipper? Often we are so caught up in the hype to make everyone squeal with delight that we throw budgets out the window, forget about resolutions to be more conservative, and end up missing the most important part of the holiday season‌ making memories with your loved ones that you will all cherish forever. You do not have to compromise your beliefs or sacrifice the “OMG, I can't believe you got me THIS!!!â€? to make your holiday more meaningful and to avoid the “OMG, I can't believe I spent THIS much.â€? Just follow along and see how a recycled Christmas can bring joy, thoughtfulness and less waste to your holidays! • GUESS wallets average $50.00 new, and are under $20.00 on

THE MUST-HAVE RESOLUTIONS: 12 NEW - NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS continued

8. Believe that you have enough time. Time will expand, and you will get everything done you need to do. Honour your time commitments to yourself. Say no to others if you need to, it is not selfish, and they will find another way. Treat time as the gift that it is, each day a day in your lifetime. 9. Eliminate people and things in your life that drain you. Make a list of what drains you and what fuels you. Spend the year eliminating the drains and building up the positives in your life. This is a great written/visual exercise that you can review as often as you like. 10. Practice daily gratitude and appreciation. Find the good in everything and everyone. Do not worry about things that only exist in your

mind but have not actually happened. 11. Visualize as you want things to be. Use your imagination; really see yourself in the situation you desire, in every area of your life. Practice this as often as you can. 12. Be kind and gentle with your words— both to yourself and to other people. Mahatma Ghandi said “Advice is like snow, the softer if falls, the longer is dwells upon, and the deeper it sinks into the mind.â€? There you have it‌ 12 New Resolutions. Practice them all at once, or start with one and add one more each month. Whatever works best for you and sets you up for success. What you pay attention to grows so focus on the good in your life it’s there,

I promise. Let go of negative thinking, it doesn’t serve anyone and will never help a conflict to be resolved. This is going to be the best year of your life! It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are today, only how you choose to see yourself in them.

call to action

CHARITY call

to action

In this beautiful community we live in, there are thousands of “subcommunities of non-profits inspired by the things many of us take for granted each and every day. Like food, friendships, safety, employment, and hope for the future. But somehow, the very inspiration of what is not is the same inspiration that makes it possible to share in the journey of someone else, because of the stories we hear and the people we meet.

This winter, share YOUR journey by reaching out to a local charity, such as one of these. There are many ways to help: plan or attend an event, become a monthly donor, volunteer, learn about their programs, tell someone else who could benefit.

A POLAR BEAR IN THE

Cathedral BY JENNY HAINSWORTH

My friend Melanie and I had had a rough day so far. We figured that going to Smiths Bar immediately before our big rehearsal was the obvious cure. I ordered a pint. She ordered a gin martini. And another. I told her that Dylan Moran said gin isn’t a drink, but more of a mascara thinner. She checked her text messages and ate another one of her fourteen extra olives. We trotted up the hill to Christchurch Cathedral minutes later. Melanie’s mascara was holding up nicely. Inside, we found our choir and suddenly all forty of us were marching upwards, encased in a stone spiral approximately the width of Gerard Butler’s shoulders. As a young woman I lived in Scotland, where I learned to Disdain the English and Interpret Architecture, in that order. These cathedral stairs were clearly derived from So Many Castles. I decided to pipe up about it. “Hey, you know why castle stairs twist to the right going up?” No one cared.

They spiral to the right because invaders naturally go up the stairs from outside. They carry swords in their right hands, and have trouble stabbing blindly up and around a corner. It’s just terribly awkward. However, descending the stairs to defend the castle, you can reach downward very handily to disembowel your enemy, or at least ruin his afternoon. It was a sobering thought, which was good, under the circumstances. This task this evening was a dress rehearsal of a new choral work by Victoria composer Nicholas Fairbank. The work, entitled Isbjorn, was written for five choirs. That’s FIVE CHOIRS. Nicholas Fairbank is no chicken. Once upstairs, I stood for a minute looking over the edge of the rail and fighting a mild urge to throw myself over it just because. I waved down to my mom, who totally didn’t notice me despite my flailing. I saw the ranks of two more choirs taking their places in the nave. Sweaters, scarves, jeans in many colours. Emily Carr’s hundreds and thousands. I saw the solitary figure of Nicholas looking up to address the singers. His gentle instructions came over a microphone. Lamps glowed in our choir stalls, and my thoughts returned to Scotland, to a memorial vespers in Dunblane. I looked across the dizzying space to the children’s choir fidgeting in the shadows of another loft, half obscured by massive columns. I became touched by what was happening. Gathered in the semi-darkness, a hundred singers had come out on a November night, leaving hearth and home. Leaving laundry and dishes. They held their heads attentively, straightened their posture, corrected volume and pitch. Why? Because a short time ago, Mr Fairbank stood on the deck of a ship in the Arctic and imagined music. Imagined our voices hailing what he saw: the northern sea, the colours of the twilight illuminating the ice. The aurora. He imagined us singing for the Isbjorn – the polar bear -which may not be long for this earth. Nowhere is goodbye explicitly said, but in the composition majestic minor chords ring out from the massed choirs as in a requiem, a great lament for the dead. We were there because that’s what artists do. They show up and make something amazing where there was nothing. “There’s a whisper on the night wind” the children’s voices floated out, silvery and sweet. “I am the ice bear” sang a deep voice, alone in a shadow, “mystic creature of the polar spaces.” “Isbjorn! Isbjorn!” A hundred voices cried to the roof, and beyond, to the stars. A solo soprano voice soared through the air with impossible purity. Tears stabbed at my eyes. Goodbye, I thought. Good-bye; the word that used to be a parting blessing: God be with ye, long ago in the time of castles. Afterwards, Melanie and I went back to the pub.

M O NEY

IT STOPS

cents

here!

BY SAIRA WATERS & JEN PATERSON Co-Founders of Dollar Divas

With the new year right around the corner we are sure many people are thinking about New Years Resolutions, but did you know that in 2012 the #3 resolution was to spend less and save more, or that 34% of all new years resolutions are money based? How about the fact that nearly ½ of people who make resolutions abandon them before Feb 1?

It stops here! Review Your Goals… Not Just on January 1

Goals are fluid, not static. You can’t simply write them down on January 1st and forget about them. You need to look at your goals as often as you can and let them change as you change. The goals you have today may not be the goals you have six months from now, or even six weeks from now. Review them often and don’t forget what you are working towards. Create SMART Goals

Keeping your goals Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely will keep you on track. For example a SMART goal that states, “I will pay off $5000 of my credit card debt by June 1, 2014.” Will be a more effective goal than, “I want to pay off debt.” Set It and Forget It

If saving more is your goal, but you know you are not good at setting money aside on your own then seek out some electronic help. There are countless ways to set up autowithdrawals into savings. Seek out a financial professional if you want assistance with how much to set aside and where to put your money.

Here are some tried and true tips on how to make resolutions that are attainable and how to stick to them. Write it Down

Studies have shown that writing down your goals makes you more accountable to them and increases the likelihood that you will achieve them. Take this one step further and put your goals somewhere that you see everyday. Looking at them consistently will keep them fresh in your mind and will keep you on track. Make it Known & Get a Partner

When you are accountable to someone besides yourself you are more likely to keep pressing towards your goals. Enlist a friend or family member to be your goal buddy and talk to them frequently about your progress. Focus In

Trying to change everything all at once is overwhelming for all of us. Pick one small thing you want to change and focus on just that. For example, just focus on lowering your food expenditure. Once you start to see change in that area it will you motivate you to bring change to another area, then another and this effect will snowball into massive change in your life and your finances.

Start Today!

Who says you have to wait until New Years Day to kick start your new financial future? Get moving today and you will be ahead of the game come January 1! Get Back on the Horse

We all make mistakes, have weak moments and generally fall of the wagon. That’s okay! Pick yourself up, dust off and keep plugging at it. Giving up on your goals won’t help you achieve them. Don’t let one mistake derail your path to a better future. Jen Paterson, financial advisor with Freedom 55 Financial and Saira Waters, REALTOR® with Royal LePage, teamed up to create Dollar Divas, the Meetup group for women who want to be financially independent! Find us on Meetup & Facebook.

WHY

Colwood

?

Did you know? That for every $100 spent in a non-locally owned business, only $43 stays in our community, and for every $100 spent in a local business, $73 stays.

THIS IS THE WHY WE’RE LAUNCHING VANCOUVER ISLAND ALMOST FREE. Our mission means more today as we expand up the island, than we could have ever imagined. The niggling in the stomach back in the Spring of 2012 that said “this idea is going to make a difference in supporting the efforts of independent business owners” has been validated. Now a year and a half later, it has been validated again. Our mission has been embraced by Greater Victoria business owners and our readers, and now up-island business owners are eagerly anticipating their opportunity to participate.

After months of market research and in speaking with central island business owners we recognized that they, too, deserved the opportunity to showcase their talents, in their communities and out to the rest of the island as well. This rounded out the concept for creating one inclusive Vancouver Island Almost Free publication. Uniting the inaugural brand of Victoria Almost Free and neighbourhoods up the island to provide support for commerce traveling up and down the island, is our dream mission. After all, we’re all proud to be islanders.

Our mission is to support local businesses with unbeatable advertising rates in a quality print and online publication while helping our vibrant citizens and flourishing neighbourhoods

Enjoy this sneak peek of what is about to evolve. And stay tuned for Vancouver Island Almost Free to hit streets February 1.

to expand the concept up the island with Vancouver Island Almost Free for the February/March issue. The concept of supporting local independent business creating increased commerce traffic up and down the island inspires this expansion. After all, we are proud to be islanders.

peace: MIND, BODY & SOUL

FINDING peace BY VALERIE PUSEY

Peace of the season to you! Whatever your spiritual path, your old traditions or new rituals that you have personally created to make this time meaningful, may you experience and celebrate peace over the days ahead.

Peace can seem elusive. The ever-increasing demands for our time and attention, the pace of our world, the endless information overload adds to our already overfull lives. During the year we try to maintain body, mind and spirit, home and garden, friends and family. Now during the holiday season we may add shopping, extra visiting and entertaining. We may be rich in these blessings but we may be drained of spirit and energetically depleted. As the days grow darker and colder we turn to look to those less fortunate here in our city, country and in the wider community of the world. Where is peace as we witness the trials of others you may ask? The answer always remains the same - go within where the still small voice that speaks for love and peace is waiting to be heard. No matter our circumstances or the world situation, peace begins within then moves outward to our homes, family, community and our world. Peace begins with you and within you. If you still the chatter of your mind and quiet the endless outward demands for our attention with a little time for silence, peace will washover you like a blessing. It sounds so easy I know, then why is it so difficult when you try? Where do you find time when there isn't enough for what you are already doing? The answer? You make it and you a priority, you create just a little space to be alone in silence and then you will experience freedom from all in the world outside yourself. Silence is key. So is gratitude. In the silent space, being grateful for all you have peace naturally follows. We cannot be truly grateful and unhappy at the same time. Choice puts us back in a place of personal power. No matter what our circumstances if we choose to accept and embrace it, that choice will lead to peace. That is mindfulness focusing our mind on the present moment and being grateful. Still challenged? No time? No space? Here is what I suggest, stop where you are, close your eye for a moment and just consciously breathe. breathing in

and out, just following our breath brings us home to ourselves, to the place of inner peace that is already and always within us. To the place where the still quiet voice that speaks for truth and love, calls us home to the truth of who we are—just be peace. If you want to take this further there are so many opportunities and paths available in our community to find and develop a practice of peace. We have many great spiritual teachers, practices and practitioners who can aid us in the journey to the home within. Churches, mosques and temples, meditation centers even bookstores. You can choose to try prayer, breath-work, bodywork, massage, yoga, acupuncture and a plethora of creative workshops in art, dance, singing, chant and writing, all to aid us in finding our center of peace and expressing our joy.

Be gentle with yourself—change takes time. All light & deep peace of the season to you, Val Full Circle Studio "Harmony for the Home & Spirit, Gifts for the Soul"

FIT NESS

tips

Setting Fitness Goals:

the SMART Way BY LOUISE HODGSON-JONES

We are now into the dark depths of winter when those memories of that incredible hot summer seems months, even years ago. We know this time of year comes upon us suddenly (and yes we blame the time change) but we need to face the fact that we now have three months of winter ahead and we have to be an adult and deal with it. In the fitness world we can a) turn our back on exercising outside and workout indoors; b) layer up and get out there

cedars restaurant & lounge

contemporary rustic cuisine

{

and just do it no matter what the weather; c) get out that training plan and make a goal for the spring, or d) all of the above. The last option is definitely the way to go. Hey this is Victoria - there is really no excuse not to continue to run, bike or hike here. (As I write Environment Canada informs me that it is -13C in Calgary and snowing. Get my point?) So now we are in agreement where do we start? It is that time of year when we tend to make resolutions for next year, and whether you are a New

“It’s about creating handcrafted favourites, maintaining the integrity of the ingredients, guaranteeing freshness and using local whenever possible.”

Introducing Tigh-Na-Mara’s new “cedars restaurant & lounge” where comfort meets contemporary rustic cuisine.

Year Resolution person or not we all do at some point say we are going to do this, or change that because that is in our nature. Most of us want to change something about ourselves and often make too many lofty goals so they are dead from the get go. So it is important to make them SMART. Most of us have heard of SMART – Smart, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely – but many don’t adhere to this very simple but effective principle. So you have run a 10K and now want to do a marathon. Wrong. The difference between 10 kilometres and 42.2 is huge. Make the half marathon the next goal – more achievable and less likely to fail (and we won’t even talk about the possibility of injury). You did the Tour de Victoria 50K and next year want to tackle the 140K. There is a 100K distance so why not make that your smart goal? Goal setting and planning is always more achievable and manageable if you do it in a group setting. However, not all of us are ‘groupies’ and often prefer the solitude of exercising on our own, not being reliant on someone else’s agenda and timetable. That is fine if you have the mental strength and character to do this. But there are a lot of groups, clubs and clinics out there whose sole purpose is to get you out there to exercise in a safe, friendly environment.

And depending on the group, you can be paired up with individuals with the same ability and goals and likeminded attitude. So where do we start? Get out that paper and pen (okay I am old fashioned) and write down your 2014 goals. Some examples: • Start a running/walking program • Run my first 10K • Train for my first half marathon or marathon • Train for my first triathlon How do I go about doing this? • Write my own training plan (because you are not a ‘groupie’) • Join a run clinic or triathlon club • Talk to my friends and arrange group runs/rides

Whether you are in a group or as an individual add variety to your training. On some days head into the gym and do some strength training or if it is really pouring with rain outside, use the treadmill, bike or elliptical. Cross training is good for you – not only does it add variety, it also helps avoid injury. Most importantly, reward yourself after a challenging workout or run. Have a latté or a glass of wine and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. The next three months doesn’t seem so bad after all does it?

Persian Lime Olive Oil

PERSIAN LIME OLIVE OIL STUFFING

paired with Quail’s Gate Chenin Blanc 2012 Brilliant tropical fruit and zesty lemon and lime notes complement the citrus flavors of the Persian Lime olive oil. With a bright acidity and medium weight, this wine cuts thru the butteriness of the stuffing, while elevating the sweetness of the red onion and red peppers. Made in a true Loire style this BC gem is breathtaking.

Cut the bread and place in bowl, toss in 1/8 cup olive oil, 1 tsp sage, 1 clove garlic, salt and pepper and toast in oven for about 10 minutes at 350. Return to seasoning bowl and add chopped veggies, melted butter, and remainder of olive oil or as needed for taste, garlic, and sage. The predominant flavour should be the Persian Lime Olive Oil. Cook in the turkey or in foil alongside 20 minutes before the turkey is ready.

Many solo-entrepreneurs need to continually acquire new clients. But their time is precious and limited. They tend to expend a lot of their resources on honing their professional skills because they believe that the better they serve their clients, the more clients they will have. They are depending on the power of word of mouth to acquire new clients. This can often be too slow a process, making additional marketing efforts necessary. Marketing specialists suggest that in today’s business environment, solo entrepreneurs need to spend 50% of their time devoted to marketing, 25% for production (products or services) and 25% for operation (admin tasks). Reaction to this can be panic and overwhelm because it takes you into uncharted territory. “Where do I begin?” you ask. First, do some strategic thinking to ensure that time is devoted to activities that will have the desired results. The Marketing Strategy looks at the “what” and is based on overall business goals. Example: To develop and maintain prospect awareness so that they move through the “know, like and trust” process quickly, resulting in X-number of new clients per month. The strategy will serve as a backdrop for the development of your Marketing Plan (the “how”) What specific , simple and doable activities will be conducted? Possibilities to consider are visits, phone calls, face to face and on-line networking, print materials, videos, podcasts, web sites, blogs – Your choices will be determined by your target client profile. This task need not be a daunting one, especially when your coach is there to ask the right questions and keep you focused until your plan is complete and in writing. Coach Lowell Ann Fuglsang conducts free weekly Being Your Own CEO Hangouts where marketing is often discussed. To register: google.com/+LowellAnnFuglsang or call 250.686-3640
