You’ll Never Believe

Exclusive to the Area

For the Diehard

Little Known Fact

More than half of the Vancouver Island Vineyards are in the Cowichan Valley. The internationally renowned West Coast Trail starts right before the Cowichan Valley southwest border. This span of the trail features rugged, lush, and steep coastal terrain with breathtaking Oceanside camping along the way. A regional treat, depending on the season and day, will be awaiting you before the boat crossing at Nitinat Narrows.

Don’t Leave Without This

You must visit the award-winning independent wineries scattered throughout the region. Check their schedules for wine tasting opportunities. See page X for details. Work up an appetite with a stroll in Cowichan Bay, then grab a bite, selecting from fresh cheeses at Hilary’s Cheese and the catch of the day from one of the many restaurants in walking distance. Your time in Cowichan Valley would not be complete without taking time to select treasures from any of a number of the eclectic shops found in the beautifully revitalized downtown Duncan. And on your way north, be sure to save time. Art and nature are combined in the murals of Chemainus.

Although some might have emigrated down south by now, the Cowichan Sweater originated in this Valley. Duncan is the home to the largest ice hockey stick.

History What?

Duncan was a leader in the recycling concept... In 1969, when the City of Duncan tore down some downtown buildings to build a new law courts complex, some of the materials from the original buildings were used at Whipple Tree Junction.

Saturday Morning Shopping

After a fun-filled family night, many locals fill their pantries with fresh produce from the year-round Duncan Farmers Market held in the heart of old Duncan.

For the Family

Choose between gas or steam locomotion. For most of the year enjoy one of the only remaining passenger trains on Vancouver Island at the B.C. Forest Discover Centre.

call to action

CHARITY call In this beautiful community we live in, there are thousands of “subcommunities of non-profits inspired by the things many of us take for granted each and every day. Like food, friendships, safety, employment, and hope for the future. But somehow, the very inspiration of what is not is the same inspiration that makes it possible to share in the journey of someone else, because of the stories we hear and the people we meet.

to action

This winter, share YOUR journey by reaching out to a local charity, such as one of these. There are many ways to help: plan or attend an event, become a monthly donor, volunteer, learn about their programs, tell someone else who could benefit.

TRAVEL

The GREEK Islands

around

BY JAIME HOWARD

Everyone should have the opportunity to stand on the bow of a ship with the sails billowing behind them as they leave Athens and set sail for the Greek Isles.

This mythica l area of the world is rich in culture an personality an d stories. Ea d offers a un ch island has ique experienc its own e for all trave llers and histor y buffs.

Jaime Howard is a team leader at the Courtenay Flight Centre. She has travelled to the Greek Islands. Contact her and her team at: Approaching Mykonos you are blinded by the whitewash homes scattered on the hillside. The panoramic views of the island are stunning, and the best way to explore is to rent an ATV and drive the winding streets to the top. On your descent, head down to Little Venice for a night of entertainment and great food. Wander through the labyrinth of cobbled walkways and then sit on the ocean's edge and enjoy a great meal and sunset. Not far from Mykonos is the most extensively uncovered archaeological site in the Mediterranean... Delos. You can only arrive by boat. Visit the supposed birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Roam through the ruins and see what has been uncovered. Explore the museum onsite showcasing major artifacts that have been found. You can also hike up Mount Kynthos; the view is amazing. Stop in Samos, a small island in the Eastern Aegean Sea. In the past this island was quite powerful and wealthy. It was once home to the philosopher Pythagoras and still has the site of the Eupalinian aqueduct you can visit. You can dine with the locals and make your own traditional Greek meal while sipping on some local wines from the region. Enjoy the view of the harbour from the plush orange couches at the Corner Bar and watch the ships sail in. Stroll along the main street stopping for some delicious gelato, visit the shops or learn how a bouzouki is made. From Samos you can take a detour and quick stop in Turkey at the port city of Kusadasi. Step back in time 2000 years and roam the ancient city of Ephesus, once home to the gods and one of the largest cities of the Roman period. Now one of the seven wonders of the world, its fame originally came from the Temple of Artemis. Only a small piece of the temple is still standing—you can stand on the steps of what is remaining of the library and sit in the open theatre imagining a performance. On the trip back to Kusadasi stop at a local carpet weaving shop and witness the intricate process involved in making a hand woven silk carpet, a true work of art. Try to find that perfect gift in the Turkish Bazaar. Make sure you haggle for the best price and then finish your day with a Turkish coffee. Sailing into the most northern area, visit the Island

20

of Patmos, home to just over 3,000 people. You will arrive into Skala. Patmos is rarely mentioned throughout history, so most facts are based on archaeological finds. This tiny island was home to the theologian Saint John and the Cave of Apocalypse. You can still walk through the monastery and become enthralled with the chorus of hymns from the choir. Then visit the medieval town of Chora which is now their capital city. Next you need to head south to Santorini, also known as Thira. On arrival you need to be adventurous and ride the Donkey up the steep mountainside. When you see all the white houses built into the mountainside, remember this island is what is left of a volcanic explosion over 3000 years ago. A caldera has been formed which now stops larger ships from coming right into the island, so depending on how you arrive, you may be tendered in. The composition of the island allows for different colors of sand so that is why you can walk on the red, black and white beaches. When swimming, head for the darker waters as it will be warmer. FITNESS TRENDS: What's HOT for 2014 BY LOUISE HODGSON-JONES

Now we are into the first quarter of the year many of us have applied those resolutions we made last month and are well on the way to a fit 2014. We may be continuing our safe and secure fitness regimen but quite often it is refreshing to try something new. Fitness trends come and go but many stay the course and often morph into other programs. So this month I thought it would be fun to see what is emerging out there in the fitness world

YOGA. This ancient form of exercising TRX™. This training method that uses and running leads to developing has been around for years. From what was a rather holistic form of stretching using breathing and postures as a main component, Yoga has since taken on a new life. Thumb through the pages of any club or rec centre guide and you may see classes such as Yoga 4 Strength, Sport Yoga, Yoga for a Balanced Mind, Yoga for Back Care and more. Yoga is now the in thing to do as our bodies cry out for more than just a genteel routine.

High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T). Developed by

Japanese scientist Izumi Tabata, H.I.I.T. is a training method that alternates short bursts of anaerobic exercise with short periods of rest in between. A typical 30 minute session would incorporate 4-8 exercises of all out intensity for 20 seconds each with a 10 second rest. Exercises can be a bike, rowing machine, free weights or your own body weight. The advantage of this training program is you can reep cardio benefits in a short space of time.

Crossfit. This is another high

intensity workout that trains all fitness systems from cardio, strength and stability to flexibility, balance and agility. Cycling, running and swimming can be incorporated with weight training such as the clean and jerk, deadlift, bench press and your own body weight like push-ups and tricep dips. Crossfit is great training if you are thinking of doing one of the adventure races like Warrior or Spartan.

a suspension system and your own body weight burst on to the fitness scene a couple of years ago. All muscle groups are activated in this challenging workout which develops a strong core as well as the upper and lower body.

essential sport skills later in life. Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) is a movement that promotes the quality of sport and physical activity, and many programs have adopted its model of early athlete development.

Home Workouts. There is

Women’s Only Fitness.

a growing list of home workouts out there that many predict will be the trend for 2014. The top of the list is P90X – Extreme Home Fitness. This is a training program that has everything – weight training, yoga, Pilates, martial arts, calisthenics with a nutrition plan thrown in. P90X was devised in 2002 by Beachbody, and since it hit the infomercial market in 2004 has been growing steadily more popular. The release of its latest version in December 2013 concentrates on 30 min workouts at maximum intensity.

Zumba. The dance craze is back.

Zumba classes incorporate Latin music with a dynamic fitness workout. With the emphasis on fun, Zumba is a ‘fitness party’ with choreographed moves that achieve a total body workout. With DVD’s available, Zumba parties can happen in the comfort of your own home.

Kids and Youth Programs. With obesity being an issue amongst the younger population there are many physical literacy programs starting up that target kids and teens. Learning the basic skills such as throwing, jumping

This is a growing sector of the fitness industry with classes specific to women. Many women prefer to workout out in a women’s only environment – it is less competitive and not daunting. On that vein, 50+ classes and programs are emerging more and more. With an aging population this is an important demographic to capture as many prefer to exercise in a safe, controlled environment. There are many other classes and programs that will continue to be popular – spin classes, bootcamps, Pilates and aquasize, for example, will always have a following. But seeing new programs and exercise routines emerge is refreshing and good for the fitness industry. It means we don’t really have an excuse anymore not to workout. There is something for everyone. Louise Hodgson-Jones is a media relations specialist, working with events such as the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, TC10K, and Frontrunners Island Race Series. She also coordinates communications for PISE and the Pacific Cycling Centre, and writes for IMPACT Magazine and Canadian Running.

paired with Four Winds Wildflower Saison Delta, BC

BEER REVIEW BY:

Four Winds Wildflower Saison is a bottle conditioned Belgian Farmhouse Ale that is beautifully infused with chamomile and elderflower. The milder carbonation from bottle conditioning and the subtle sweetness of the wildflowers compliment the heat of the chipotle olive oil. Be forewarned, this beer and pasta pairing is so good you may finish the whole bottle on 1 plate of pasta!

BEER pairings: 10 UNIQUE STYLES FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND

IPA Tap Takeover: Meet the Masters of the Hops FRIDAY, MARCH 7TH Spinnakers Brewpub, 308 Catherine St

Hoyne Pilsner In a land where IPA's

and hoppy ales dominate, this often under appreciated style has been brought to centre stage and received a standing ovation. Hoyne has kept this true to Czech Pilsner style and made it incredibly lively and very interesting. Bright, fruity and wonderfully refreshing with malt flavours reminiscent of water crackers. Pair with a patio and summer barbecue fair including nachos, fruit platters and a chez lounger.

Spinnakers Nut Brown Ale In the

style of Northern English Brown Ales, subtle caramel and dried fruit lend themselves to toffee and nut flavours that have kept Spinnakers Nut Brown Ale a favourite in their VicWest brewpub, the oldest one in Canada. Pair this with a Mushroom risotto, Shepherd's pie, or Butternut squash with gnocchi.

Driftwood Fat Tug IPA There will be no doubt that you are in the Pacific Northwest after one taste of this perfectly balanced India Pale Ale. Hitting citrusy grapefruit and piney notes from a dose of the big "C" hops, this will satisfy the bitterest hopheads around. Pair this with a Mango chutney, or a Seared Ahi Tuna salad with toasted sesame seeds.

Lighthouse Siren Imperial Red Malt-forward with toffee and butteriness, balanced with baked bread and hints of vanilla

Ahhh… Hops. We love them, don’t we? Over 15 of BC’s best IPA’s on tap at Spinnakers all night as selected by Joe Wiebe. Expect a handful of BC’s most notable brewmasters on hand. Nuff said.

make this Imperial Red incredibly easy to drink and especially dangerous at a surprising eight percent alcohol by volume. Pair this with a lamb stew or Hummus and pita.

to an abundance of hops that offer flavours of tropical fruit and evergreen trees.

Phillips Ginger Beer With a surprising punch of ginger this light bodied ale is actually quite easy to put back. Sushi, Mooshu pork, Prawn stir fry and green salads will pair very well with this bright and zesty beer.

lager comprised of Munich malts and roasted wheat, this dry lager has vanilla, coffee and nutty flavours with a round mouth feel and clean finish. Pair this with a smoked gouda, Crème brûlée or an Almond-crusted Halibut.

Swans Riley's Scotch Ale A hefty

wee heavy that packs a sweet brandy malt nose followed by caramel and dried fruit into a warming finish. With a backbeat of peat and smoke, this pairs well with haggis stains on your kilt, yellow curry or duck breast.

VIB Hermann's Dark Lager Another long-time staple in Victoria's beer scene, this multiple award winning dark lager was originally formulated and brewed by Hermann Hoerter nearly thirty years ago. Toasty malts, slightly nutty flavours and a full body balanced by subtle hops prove that not all lagers are yellow fizzy wussy beer.

Tofino Hop Cretin IPA Gabba Gabba Hey, this beer is delicious. Yes, there are two IPA's on this list, after all we are in the Pacific Northwest an area prolific for India Pale Ales. Caramelly malts provide the supporting cast

peace: MIND, BODY & SOUL

LOVE, LIFE

& laughter BY VALERIE PUSEY

The dream of love, we all share it. Be it romantic, familial, spiritual, a passionate caring for something important in our lives such our pets, friendships, sports, or interests; it is one we all seek to experience and express . In the process of waiting for inspiration to write this article about love – a somewhat daunting task in and of itself – I just relaxed into experience – mine and the many others who have shared their journey on the road of love. Love, life and laughter flow freely and naturally when we open our hearts fully to the loving experience of the moment. Fear shuts down that flow and the loving expansive floating joy we were experiencing is closed off when we begin to worry, doubt or question the future or dwell on the past. Staying in the now of love keeps it alive and vital. Love manifests in our lives in so many ways, beckoning to us to partake of its varied delights. Our friends, families, food, homes, hobbies, work, pets, gardens, fitness and more can be approached with a deepening appreciation when we cultivate a loving, compassionate heart. It begins with the self of course, breathe in the oxygen of love first so you may breathe out and extend it to others . Fully appreciate your world and appreciation will deepen into gratitude and love for the miracle of simply being here. Then give the love you want for yourself to the world around you and it will be returned to you in manifold ways. If you want to be loved then be loving! Many times we need only to ask ourselves what is the most loving thing I can do right now? Or re-phrase that to what would love do now? Love itself can be our muse, it is an entity unto itself. Also on some level loving is a choice ,when the rosy glow of first loving wears off , look again and choose to love in spite of and because of all that the focus of our love may be – we can

Love, Life and Laughter, Suzanne Dannenburg

fall in love all over again. The opportunities abound – the unfolding seasons, the changing hours of the days, each “being” we meet in each moment of the day. Now for the laughter – lighten up – love is fun too! Rolling in the autumn leaves, flying down a ski slope, a wet dog kissing your face, a child’s wild raucous laughter, kisses of all sorts, our own silly egos will deflate into fits of giggles at ourselves and each other if we just shift our perspective , drop the ego and see how very unimportant our judgments are in the overall scheme of life and how we think love is supposed to look , feel or present itself. Let go, let love, love freely with wild abandon! Don’t wait or plan for love, just live, laugh and be grateful and you will find love has been here all the time - a realm awaiting to be walked into at any moment. So above all I wish you love on your journey, may you fall in love with each moment of this miraculous day! Full Circle Studio "Harmony for the Home & Spirit, Gifts for the Soul"

Solo-Entrepreneurs -

HAVE YOU DONE YOUR YEAR END REVIEW YET? BY LOWELL ANN FUGLSANG, Workstyle-Lifestyle Coach/Consultant

Many of us have yet to develop a healthy relationship with money and that really shows up in our business. I’ve noticed that many solo entrepreneurs abdicate their financial responsibility. We’ve all heard bookkeepers joke about the proverbial “shoebox”. At year end we delegate our accountability by shipping off the shoebox of receipts to the bookkeeper; our instructions are to “do up the books” in time for tax return submission. One of the most important business decisions we must make when starting out is whether to do our own record keeping or to hire a bookkeeper. If we haven’t got a grip on our relationship with money, chances are we will choose the latter. If you do your own financials, you will always know what’s going on in your business. Then, as the business grows it makes sense to have a specialist take on that work, but by this time you have an in-depth understanding of the inner financial workings of a business. You now know how to answer questions like “How much should I spend on promotion?” “Can I afford a new computer this year?” “Should I raise my fees?” Take the time to study your year-end reports and notice the story they tell about cash flow, spending and income sources. Your business coach can help you decide what financial strategies you need to put into place to maintain good business health and to grow. Be sure to record them for reference next year. Business Coach Lowell Ann Fuglsang conducts free weekly Being Your Own CEO Master Mind sessions on Google+.

A best kept secret of many locals, you must dine at the Prairie Inn for the great local neighbourhood service and homemade pub food! The Prairie Inn established in 1859 is located right in the heart of Saanichton on the corner of Mt Newton and Wallace Dr.

LOVE BY THE POTATO OVEN: BY JENNY HAINSWORTH

The Scots enjoy a baked potato. They even have a chain restaurant devoted to the lowly root vegetable, called Spud-U-Like. It’s basically a fast food counter serving nothing but baked potatoes topped with substances that Scottish people consider good toppings for potatoes. You can’t have sour cream, but do you want a potato with tuna and sweetcorn? Brown beans straight out of the tin? Chicken tikka masala made by Morag from John O’Groats? Spud-U-Like can hook you up. In the last month of the twentieth century, I found myself employed at a place called Common Grounds. Though it was an independent café, Common Grounds, too, furnished forth baked tatties, alongside cappuccinos and hot chocolate. The potatoes had their own room in the basement. Lore had it that what was now our potato room had been part of a complex of dungeons connected to the castle. I was the only Canadian on staff. There was gorgeous Steve from Sydney, Erin from New Zealand, Joanna from Fife, Jamie from Dunfermline, Phani from Athens, and me. I had met Phani, a nursing student, at the University of Edinburgh, where we bonded over our shared culture shock, being incredibly cold all the time, and aversion to the University Library. Her library anxiety was instinctive; mine had been earned. One November night, as I was wandering

44

A Scottish Valentine

I fell in love with Steve the Australian on St Valentine’s Day. It happened by the light of a potato oven, deep under the Edinburgh castle mound. That I could love a mere Australian in a country brimming with Scottish men speaks to the power of Stephen’s charm. It was considerable. the stacks and quietly weeping, I missed the announcement that the library was about to close. A few minutes later, all the lights went off with a heart-stopping CLACK. I realized in that moment I had not seen any other humans for a long time. I began to grope my way out in the darkness, bleating for help. I was met at last in the stairwell by a security guard. “Wha’re yu steel duinn en heirr, luv!” he guffawed. Scots will laugh at you, any chance they get. “I – uh – I don’t know. “ I was new to the dialect and never entirely sure what anyone in the city was saying to me. “I don’t know” had become my default answer to anything that seemed like a question. Though I wasn’t fond of his attitude, I naturally followed the guard out of the building out like he was Robert the Bruce himself. A month after the library incident, I withdrew from studies at the University of Edinburgh. Between that experience and the fact that the George Square cafeteria had no windows and served ketchup from a huge open bowl under the name ‘red sauce’, by December I just couldn’t take it anymore. At Student Services, Morvyth told me that, as a postgraduate student, I was required to announce my withdrawal in person to the Head of the English Language Department, Charles Jones. I duly climbed the stairs to his office. Professor Jones told me of his disappointment in me. He said a Scottish winter is indeed hard to get used to, and I should stick it out until spring. He reminded me of the privilege I was throwing away, and wanted to know what on airth I would now do with my life if it wasn’t studying syntax. “Lots of things. I might take piano.” I said crazy things like that, in those days. He looked out of the grey window and murmured, “I used to play piano. I can’t remember why I stopped.” He kept looking out across the Meadows, and beyond that, the Links, whose curious lumpy terrain is ascribed to the shallow graves of plague victims. He seemed to have forgotten I was in the room. I slipped out the door and closed it softly. Phani told me they needed someone where she worked, at Common Grounds, and I applied for the job. I liked the idea of that steamy, glowing little place that clung to the majestic bulk of the castle mound, with its

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

views of Princes Street Gardens and Calton Hill. And I needed cash, fast. Common Grounds was owned by Gladys, or as I called her, Marie Antoinette. Gladys was a rich Texan married to an even richer Scot, and together they ruled galaxies and produced a dense pink item named Harrison. Harrison had his own Shetland pony and his own baby grand piano. Gladys brought in pictures to show us: Harrison on the pony. Harrison with the baby grand. Harrison asleep on a pile of money. She paid us three pounds an hour, in a country where a cup of coffee cost two pounds. We retaliated by not telling her, once, when she came out of the toilet with her skirt tucked into the back of her tights, and by eating as many of her crisps and white chocolate buttons as we could stand. Despite my fall from academic grace and my difficult employer, I felt happy at Common Grounds. The camaraderie of my fellow workers, adrift in the world like me, soothed my soul. Hogmanay came, with its riotous street party; Common Grounds stayed open late and nearly exploded from overcapacity and extra steam. February arrived, and on the fourteenth I took Steve by the hand and led him down to the potato room. Gentle reader, I misled you. It was not Steve I loved by the glow of the potato oven, deep beneath Edinburgh Castle. I always thought it would be a good spot for romance, so strange and secret, and Steve the Australian served the fantasy well enough. Actually I just needed him to help me carry potatoes upstairs. A big group of Germans had just come in. No, despite everything, I fell in love with Scotland itself. Grey, cold, hostile, sarcastic, baffling, deep fried, deeply intelligent Scotland. Convention has it that countries are female, but to me Scotland will always be all man. Scotland it was who took me in his strong arms, pressed me against a clammy underground wall, and kissed me hard.

In March, he sent me daffodils. I decided to stay.

cents

PRICE VS

cost

BY SAIRA WATERS & JEN PATERSON Co-Founders of Dollar Divas

Getting a good deal is always exciting and boxing day is proof the word “sale” can motivate us to make purchases we would not normally splurge on. Yet few of us understand how much we are truly spending on the things we use every day.

We have all heard the cliché “quality over quantity”, but few of us have heard the phrase “cost over price”. There is a big difference between these two phrases. Price is what we pay when we get to the checkout counter (this is where most of us focus our energy). Cost is how much we pay in the long run, which is a better measure of value. The grocery store is a place where many people focus on price rather than cost. How many times have you bought an item just because it was on sale? Often, the sale items are not the best deals in the store. For example, if you compare a 250g bag of sugar, on sale for $1.50 versus a 2kg bag, regular price $6.00. The price per gram of the 2kg bag is only $0.003 per gram of sugar compared $0.006 of the smaller bag. Overall, the larger bag will cost you less than the bag that is on sale. Don’t worry, you don’t need to start bringing a calculator with you to the store, the price per unit is listed in the bottom right corner of the tag. The price per unit is much better measure of cost than the purchase price. One thing to keep in mind when shopping is that larger quantities

46

doesn’t always mean lower cost. Many people flock to Costco every week to stock up on one or two key items, but end up spending over $200 because everything was, “such a good deal!” Bring a notebook and jot down the price per unit listed and compare it to your local grocery store. You might be surprised the costs are about the same, without the pain of storing all those big bulk items. You should also be careful about buying perishables items at places like Costco because it doesn’t matter how cheap it is if it ends up in the garbage! Another area where price and cost get mixed up is with bigger ticket items like electronics. Have you fallen into the trap of purchasing the cheapest thing you can get your hands on, only to find in a few months your new device doesn’t work properly? A great way to determine cost when you are looking at big ticket items is price per use. Yes, a better quality item might be a bigger hit to your bank account now, but in the long run you will spend less on it because it will last longer and your cost per use will drop considerably. Keep in mind, there

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | FEBRUARY/MARCH 2014

is a fine line between purchasing quality and splurging on the most expensive toy in the store. Try doing some research before you buy by checking online reviews. You want to make sure your item will last long enough for you to get your moneys worth. Ladies, this principal also applies to clothing. I’m a sucker for a sale, but it is important to look at cost per wear of your clothing. A trendy item will likely be out of style is 6 months is probably not worth spending big bucks on. However, a classic piece will be useful for many years to come and is a good item to stretch your purse strings on. Shopping smarter is not difficult it simply takes a bit of planning and awareness. If you keep in mind cost is more important than price, you can save you a bundle in the long run! Jen Paterson, Financial Advisor and Saira Waters, REALTOR® with Royal LePage, teamed up to create Dollar Divas, the Meetup group for women who want to be financially independent! You’ll Never Believe In British Columbia there are 83.5 small businesses per 1,000 people, the highest number in Canada. The “shop local” concept supports an independent and growing community of local business here in Victoria, on the island, and across British Columbia (BC Stats, 2013). Keeping these businesses alive requires the average spend of $1,000 per month locally on grocery, eating out, clothing, entertainment, fitness, and leisure. A thought to consider when you plan your next shopping trip... For the Diehard Pack a picnic lunch of local delights and wind the various trails up Mt. Doug for a breathtaking culinary experience. Don’t Leave Without This A visit to Beacon Hill Park Petting Zoo; fun for all ages and be sure to bring your camera. Exclusive to the Area B.C. Sunshine – in July 2013, Victoria received 432.8 hours of

sunshine, the most ever recorded in any month in B.C. history. It receives an average of 2,193 hours annually, second only to Cranbrook.

Little Known Fact There are 7 women to every man in Victoria. Enough said. History What? Victoria was briefly known as Fort Albert in 1843 as a Hudson Bay Trading Post, but later was renamed Fort Victoria in 1846 in honour of Queen Victoria. Friday Night Fever With 4 major playhouses and a very vibrant entertainment scene, there is no reason to be bored on a Friday night. For the Family The list is endless with so many options all over the city. To name just a few: Willow’s Beach, The Maritime Museum, Cook St Village Playground, Fisherman’s Wharf, and many other clean and attractive family friendly parks.

COOPER on for ATION:

5 HAB ITS OF HAPPY PEOPL E

What would happen if we were able to shift our thinking from a place of competition, to a place of cooperation? Imagine a day where everything just magically went our way, a time when there was always more than enough. We can create this time by shaping how we see our daily reality. By shifting our perception from a place of lack to a place of abundance, subtle changes will begin to appear in our lives, and then gain energy as we naturally assume cooperation and abundant thinking as a way of life. In the words of Dr. Wayne Dyer, “When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. A powerful way to start living a life based on cooperation is to practice kindness, believing that there is always more than enough for everyone. Below are some tips for doing just that. 1. Treat everyone you meet with kindness. Not only will it make them happier, it will fire up your serotonin and help you feel better too. 2. Express gratitude throughout your day. Articulate a few words of gratitude for the simple things like remembering where you put your keys, or that you have a reliable vehicle to drive, and grow into the bigger things like the ability to make a living, perfect health, and loving relationships. The opportunities for gratitude are limitless (you are breathing, have sight and are reading right now), so you can reach for a grateful thought even on the darkest and hardest days. People who are thankful are better able to cope with stress increasing their overall better health. 3. Speak well of others. It is easy to find fault in others. When we do this we are only building negativity. As we practice kindness to others, it is important to follow it up with how we think of others as well as how we speak of them. Practice perceiving others as if they are behaving in a positive way. It will reduce your stress level, and the positive vibration will lift them to a higher place as well. 4. While you are at it, speak well of yourself. Stop comparing yourself to what other people are letting you see about themselves, their family, their fitness, their money and so on. Listen for those self-criticizing thoughts; that little voice in your

The little things, the small stuff, seems to gain power as it accumulates throughout the day, causing a significant amount of stress by the days end. Whether we are competing for parking spaces at the coffee shop, attention at work, the treadmill at the gym, the fastest lane for our commute, the shortest line in the grocery store, with the clock, or with the television, our stress continues to rise. head that is usually playing on a repetitive loop trying to keep you repeating the same negative behavior by holding you in that pattern. Instead replace those thoughts with kind thoughts. Allow yourself to make mistakes, forgive yourself, let it go and move on. As you begin to expect the best of yourself, you will automatically rise to the occasion. 5. Nurture positive relationships. Shop in your community, speak to people in the elevator, talk to your neighbour, and be kind to people in the service industry. Pay attention to your family and make time for them. We are all a part of each other and benefit physically and mentally from social relationships. When we perceive ourselves as separate we cut off a part of ourselves that is crucial to our overall health and happiness. We can learn to be cooperative, kind, and positive just like we learn anything else; by deciding to do it and then practicing it in our daily lives until it becomes a habit. We do not need to worry how our practice of kindness and cooperation is perceived, only that we are in alignment with our true self. Thinking small, or from a place of lack does not bring happiness or promote kindness. Think big, think abundantly. Remember that there is always more than enough. Remember that what you give out to the world returns to you. Remember that love attracts love, and that you deserve to have love and kindness given back to you, and so shall it be.
