Perched atop the rooftop patio at Chez Elena’s, at Los Cuatro Vientos Hotel, in Puerto Vallarta; With some newly-made friends from Toronto, we found ourselves sipping coarsely salted-rimmed lime margarita’s, enjoying the panoramic view that is the Pacific – Vallarta Styles. You know it’s funny, having sold travel for over seven years now, I rarely see people get overly excited about booking a trip to Puerto Vallarta. Whether they’ve been before, desired something a little more exotic & impressive, or simply got a better deal the year before, there is a bit of an anti-climatic scene during the planning and booking stages. Well I’m here to pump a little life into this place called Vallarta. This April we stayed at the Velas Vallarta, (in the Marina part of town, approximately ten minutes from the Puerto Vallarta Airport), and had a trip that we’ll remember forever. The Velas Vallarta rates as a 4-4.5 Star, with excellent reviews, that I must admit I’ve never booked before. We recently had a training session in Victoria that showcased the property, and the timing seemed right to visit. After eight days, seven nights, it’s hard to imagine I’d go anywhere else in the area. One enters this Mini-Paradise by walking through an impressive lobby with arches that make you feel like you’re looking at the entranceway to the Coliseum in Rome. Every room has a balcony that faces the ocean, and is equipped with a full kitchen should one wish to cook. If not, there are two magnificent restaurants there to serve your every need with a variety 4

Between Italian, Spanish, French, & Mexican, they always seemed to deliver a quality meal. (I would recommend eating outside on the patio whenever possible). At only 105 pesos away from downtown ($10.50CAD), it was an easy journey to the Malecon, and all the sites & sounds that make-up Puerto Vallarta. Whether you desire a fancy meal out on the town (check-out Coco’s for Breakfast-Lunch, or Fajita Republic for Dinner), a cocktail or two down by the water enjoying some local music, or bartering for some Mexican Blankets at the night-markets, this city has it all – and reasonably priced despite our

struggling dollar. When you’ve had your fill of fun, you’re still not far to head back to the Velas for the pools that are warmer than the air at dusk, with a mojito, beer, or wine at hand. Don’t mind the Peacocks that are cawing all day long, as you’ll be kept occupied by Ambrocio who is happy to entertain, (challenge him at Table Tennis if you dare). When you’re ready to retire for the day, you’ve got your beautiful suite, with balcony, to finish the night off with a game of rummy, or simply a toast…as you’ve had one heck of a day – Again. fresh cucumber salad 2 English Cucumbers (seedless) 1 green onion 3 Tbsp Wild Dill Infused Olive Oil 2 Tbsp Pomegranate Quince White Balsamic Vinegar 2 tsp sugar 2 sprigs of fresh thyme

Peel cucumbers and thinly slice. I like to use a madeline for this, but a sharp knife will do the trick too. Dice the onion and toss together with the cucumbers in a serving bowl, or transporting container. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar and sugar and drizzle over salad. Toss to coat and top with the leaves from fresh thyme sprigs. Let marinade for at least 2-3 hours but up to 1 day before serving. Will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container in the fridge.

In a small sauce pan heat lemon juice and stir in sugar until it just dissolves. Divide the mixture equally between two clean 750ml (wine bottles), add 2 Tbsp of Mango white balsamic to each bottle and top with water. Place one sprig of mint in each bottle and place stopper in the top. Give each bottle a swirl and place in fridge to chill for at least 3 hours.

Divino Estate Winery - Very Unique.

T

he same goes for owner/winemaker Giuseppe (Joe) Busnardo, the patriarch of the 33-year old (1982) family Estate Winery called Divino. You can read about Joe in B.C. grape/wine literature, as he has trail-blazed for this industry. “If the stream is flowing one way, you’ll be sure to see Joe swimming in the other direction” is an example of the fight he fought to remain an independent businessman in this industry. Now 81-years young and still full of energy, Joe is making great wines from the fruit he grows in the Cowichan Valley. He was the first to plant European Vitis Vinifera in Canada in 1968. He brought dozens of varieties to try, including many from his area in Italy; Trebbiano and Tocai being two examples. After a huge fight with many levels of government he was finally able to start his winery with the wines he produced from the grapes he grew (as he does today). In 1982, Divino Estate Winery was opened in Oliver B.C. and was the 5th winery in this province. As the wine industry established, Joe decided to move. The original vines are still growing in Oliver and cuttings were brought to Cobble Hill to start the 2nd vineyard. In 1996 he re-opened Divino and started the Cobble Hill vineyard. He was the 5th winery on Vancouver Island. Much of the 40-acre property is planted in the vinifera varietals that have been traditional to Divino Estate Winery for more than 40 years. The design of the winery ensured the varietals matched the natural conditions. Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Castel, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris form the core of the mix of varietals. Other niche varieties fill the wide range of plantings and offer wonderful blending accents. At times these will be bottled as single varietal wines when the conditions result in exceptional harvests. The wine you’ll taste at Divino is a taste of Cowichan Valley with old world influence. Don’t be alarmed if Joe says, “Just taste it. You either like it or you don’t. It is that simple.” You may also see the humour in some of his labels. Joe says it like it is, and that’s part of his charm. This charm continues through the relaxed attitude of the winery; no wine snobs allowed. Joe looks forward to seeing you this summer and sharing an experience of Divino Estate Winery. Bottle prices start at $10 and Joe is offering a summer BOGO deal: Buy 2 bottles and get the 3rd one for $5.00. You can also enjoy seasonal fruits from the crops of grapes, apples, cherries, blackberries and figs. Come and enjoy a unique experience and some unique wines from Divino Estate Winery. H E ALT H &

I was out of town working at a conference. When I woke the second morning I wandered into the bathroom to get ready for the day. The bathroom had bright overhead lights that illuminated a wall size mirror. I looked up and was startled. I was barely recognizable to myself. I looked puffy, as if somehow I had been inflated overnight. I tried to recognize myself but was unable to find the person I see in my mind’s eye. My health challenges over the last 18 months made it difficult to exercise or eat real food. It was a vicious cycle of feeling poorly but not having the energy to take control. Instead I descended emotionally and my weight ascended concurrently. My physical health was now in recovery, and my frame of mind had just awoken to the reality of a 50 pound weight gain.

Later on that morning I arrived at the motivational conference I was working at as a certified coach and facilitator. I felt shameful and the irony was on my mind. Although I was confident and passionate about my work, I was battling a familiar and judgemental inner voice claiming ‘I am not good enough, and that I am a fraud.’ I wasn’t able to manage my own life and anyone who saw me could see that in my size and shape. This is not the first time I have rode this roller coaster. The old shame and self-criticism were back like familiar confidants to make sure that my misery had company. Throughout the day when there were lulls in activity at my booth, I was able to wander in and out of lectures by world-renowned speakers, authors and teachers. I would slip into the backseat and hear little pieces of wisdom. I seemed to be divinely guided to hear exactly what I needed to hear in order to focus on my own healing. One spoke on soul accomplishments and used the example, ‘Today I choose to forgive myself for something I have been beating myself up about.‘ I realized in that

moment that I had been doing exactly what I coach other people not to do. Self-criticism doesn’t work. If it did, we would all be skinny and rich with no bad habits and perfect relationships! I also realized that I had been evaluating myself by what can be measured on the outside and not the inside. Another spoke of our transformations, and to be patient with ourselves. She spoke of the judgemental voices that we hear in our minds and referred to them as the strange hitchhikers in the back seat of our car. We all have stories. They don’t have to define us. Dr. Robert Holden shared something I felt was just for me. (I am sure 2000 others felt the same way.) He spoke of spiritual intelligence and finding out the heart of who we really are, not who we think we are, or what we think others expect us to be. He stated was that we are beginning to think that we are our bodies – not that we have them. How can we see our eternal loveliness and grace if we are judging ourselves? I realized that I need to trust life to support me every step of my journey. My body and soul are lovable, simply

because love is the essence of who I am. These dark days of the soul are really dark days of my ego, and I have accepted that I am meant to learn from this experience as part of my journey. One of my biggest fears is showing vulnerability, nonetheless I have shared this personal experience with you because I know deep inside we are all the same. We all have dark days, inner voices, unwanted hitchhikers and self-judgment. Perhaps you will be inspired to ask yourself what your life would be like if you were not judging and criticizing yourself. It is challenging to have this type of intimate dialogue however life loves you and will support you in your growth. The next morning- a short 24 hours later- I looked in the mirror and spoke words of forgiveness and acceptance. You can too. 5 MONEY MISTAKES

you should avoid BY SAIRA WATERS & JEN PATERSON Co-Founders of Dollar Divas

Mistakes are a part of life. If we didn’t make mistakes we would never learn. The key is rather than making the same mistakes over and over again, learn from them and make better choices next time.

Mistake #1: Carrying a

is; putting yourself in debt just to keep up will only create a big mess.

Mistake #5: Spending More

Credit is a part of life, without solid credit you can’t get a mortgage, which would rule out owning a home for most of us. The problem is credit can be a challenge to manage properly. It is very tempting to see credit as money that you have at your disposal. Yet, if you don’t have enough cash to pay off your credit card in full by the time the bill comes than you will be paying the credit card company a pretty penny to allow you to carry a balance to the next month. Most credit card companies charge between 10-20% in interest. Carrying just $1000 on your card for just 6 months will cost you $60. This may not seem like a lot but over time this will add up. Wouldn’t you rather spend that money on something you enjoy?

Mistake #3: Paying Bank

This may seem like a no brainer but it is by far the most common money mistake we come across. The first step to not spending more than you earn is understanding how much you earn. If you have a base salary of $50,000 that doesn’t mean that $50,000 goes into your pocket every year. There are taxes as well as CPP and EI that get deducted off your paycheque. If you work on commission or tips than start writing down how much you bring in, you may think that you earn more than you do. After you know what comes in the door you have to get a grip on what goes out. This means writing down every time you spend money. There are some great tracking apps out there so do some research on what will work for you. The bottom line is what goes out can not be more than what comes in.

Credit Card Balance

Mistake #2: Keeping Up With the Jones’s

We’ve all done it. You come home from work one day and see that your neighbour has purchased a brand new car and the little green jealously monster inside you says, “How come they get a brand new car and I’m still driving this hunk of junk?” Trying to keep up with others is a recipe for disaster. Chances are you don’t know the inner workings of how your friends or neighbours finances work. Maybe they have income that you aren’t aware of or are digging themselves into a financial pit with no hope of recovery. The point 14

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | SUMMER 2015

Fees Late Fees or NSF Fees Unnecessarily

It used to be that bank fees were simply a fact of life, but with competition increasing banking fees are starting to disappear. Many banks and credit unions now offer free chequing accounts with no transaction limits. Paying simply to have a chequing account doesn’t make sense anymore. What makes even less sense is paying late fees or NSF charges. A typical NSF fee can range anywhere from $15.00 to $50.00 which with a little bit of planning can be avoided all together. Try working with a money calendar so you know when money is coming in and due to go out.

Mistake #4: Not Having

Insurance

Insurance is not a fun subject to talk about, and like credit the best time to get insurance is when you don’t need it. Especially because personal insurance is something that only gets more expensive as you age. Talk to a financial professional about disability insurance and if you have kids, life insurance. Make sure you understand the details of the contract and get more than one opinion. Spending money on insurance you don’t need is just as bad as not having it at all.

tips

COOL SUMMER

running

BY LOUISE HODGSON-JONES

Summer is here and for many of us it is time to get out and enjoy outdoor activities – not that we can’t do that all year round on Vancouver Island. But we take on a different perspective when it is warmer, dryer and knowing that we may have three months or more of fabulous weather. With the long range forecast calling for a hot, dry summer we also need to be cognisant of being out in the sun in extreme heat, and taking the necessary precautions to avoid sunburn. Depending on the activity we also may have to adjust our schedules to workout when it is cooler.

Take running as an example – the Island is the best place on the planet to run. Which is why we live here – right? We can run outdoors 12 months of the year – not many places in Canada can boast that. But there is that special time of year when all we need in addition to a good pair of shoes is a singlet, shorts, hat or visor and we are off exploring the wonderful trails and pathways here. But with a hot summer predicted we may need to make adjustments to our schedules and also what we wear. Here are a few tips for running this summer. • When to run. Depending on your running goals and if you run alone or with a group, run early in the day or later in the evening. If it is already 16°C at 8 am with a forecast high of 25 then run at 7 am. If you are training for a half or full marathon you will have completed your long run before the heat of the day. • Choose your routes. Run by the water and enjoy sea breezes, where is it usually a few degrees cooler, or on a trail with a lot of shade. The victoriaweather.ca website has live temperature readings from all over the region so you can find the cooler spots to run. • Hydrate. It is important to drink not just on the run but before. Drink water the day before a long run and the day of. Carry water (there are some great water belts out there) or if you are running for more than hour have an electrolyte or sports drink. Plan your route where there are washrooms and water fountains so you can top up your bottle. Dehydration is a serious condition

18

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | SUMMER 2015

so avoid caffeine beforehand, and before you partake of that post-run refreshing beer, drink water first to hydrate. • Eat. On long runs you may want to carry some sport nutrition such as gels or chews and fuel beforehand. Many runners think that water will keep them hydrated but often forget that the difference between a good and bad run is fuel - they can lose energy because they haven’t eaten enough. With the addition of extreme heat, you can feel drained and nauseous. So experiment with running and eating and see what works for you. • Wear wicking fabrics. Never wear cotton on a summer run (yes people still do). There are many new fabrics out there, so what to wear? “Firstly, it’s important for technical shirts to be a closer fit as their purpose is to wick away moisture,” says Nick Walker, owner of Frontrunners. “Tech shirts regulate body temperature so on cooler mornings the shirt will also keep you warmer.” There are shirts that have body mapping: mesh panels on heavy sweat areas such as under the arms and the back. You can also get shirts with UV protection – darker colours have a SPF of 40 and lighter colours SPF 20. Sugoi and New Balance have a shirt with ‘ice-fil’ – a cooling fabric so when the body sweats, the shirt is cool to touch. Chafing is an issue for many so investing in a 2-in-1 short with a liner can avoid that, and always apply Body Glide or a similar anti-chafing product, on sensitive areas. And don’t forget the hat and sunglasses. According to Walker, your face

is more relaxed when you are not squinting, and that ensures you don’t tense in the shoulders and upper body. • Adjust your training. If you were planning a training run with a high RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) then adjust accordingly. The RPE varies from 1-2 where little effort is required to 9-10 which is maximum effort. In the heat you will feel like you are working harder to maintain your pace, so run by how you feel, not what your GPS watch is telling you. If it gets too warm, run at a lower RPE. • Post-exercise cooling. In addition to water and your favourite nutrition try chocolate milk – research has shown it has recovery elements. After a hot run, and if you are by the ocean or a lake, wade in and give your legs a cool soak for 15 minutes. You will feel a lot better for it. • Skip it! If the temperature is out of your comfort zone – just skip the run. It won’t hurt and you can always head to the treadmill in the gym and do the run there.

These are just a few tips for help you enjoy your running this summer. See you on the trails. Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub and the two Spirit Merchant locations proudly carry on tap and in stores many the craft brews on this map. Boasting over 500 craft beers in its Spirit Merchant Stores, its landmark waterfront brewpub on Catherine St started brewing its ales over 31 years ago. A collaborator in the community and supporter of others in the industry and many things local, owner Paul Hadfield has made significant contributions to the rise of the craft brew popularity on Vancouver Island. Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub’s menu focuses on local products by the season. The decadent in-house baked goods will have you coming back for more. You will find Spinnakers Spirit Merchants at 176 Wilson St in Vic West and 435 Simcoe St in James Bay. Both locations are a nice walk from downtown through the Inner Harbour into James Bay, or over the Blue Bridge or Bay St Bridge to the Vic West location. Following the Bay St Bridge into Vic West, your walk could bring you right to the Brewpub – simply follow the street you’re on until you hit the water as you cross over Esquimalt Rd. The Brewpub now serves up a House Cider as well. Enjoy “Craft Brew on the Map” and the adventures it brings. Did you know Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub has guesthouses?

Blood O ranges Scare Me &

FOURTEEN OTHER IDLE THOUGHTS BY JENNY HAINSWORTH

1) Blood oranges scare me a little bit. I

buy them thinking I am going to eat them, but all I do is just walk past the fruit bowl and shudder.

2) I want to become friends with a

navigator so that after we have coffee, I can say “Later, navigator!”

3) The Polynesians were probably the

greatest navigators humanity has ever known. Do you know how Hawai’i was settled? Polynesians from presentday New Zealand crossed the open ocean in canoes, a distance of 7, 412 kilometres. They just pulled the canoes up on the beaches in Hawai’i and had a look around. They said “Yup! This looks good! Let’s go back and get our stuff.” AND THEY DID.

4) I was at the beach the other day,

sunning myself on a rock. This one seagull sounded just like Bjork.

5) Using a typewriter is like riding a

cow. In front of you there is just nothing! Cows’ heads are lower than horses’. You constantly feel like you are going to fall off the front. Same with typewriters.

6) When I’m watching American

TV, I find the ads for hospitals so strange. “Use our hospital! It’s a great hospital!” It’s like if they had ads for bridges. “Use our bridge! Those other bridges are for losers!”

7) Those new hand dryers just need to

calm down. I have a lot to do, but I’m never in such a big hurry that I need my hands dried by a boxed tornado!

8) My brother Dylan is a standup comic.

I asked him what one of his weirdest performance experiences was. He said he once did a show for only about six people, and one of the people was Nick Nolte. Nick sat front and center wearing a snow-white linen suit and hat. He laughed throughout the show, and he was also cutting his toenails the whole time. Nick Nolte’s toenails were flying onto the stage and hitting Dylan. That’s just one of the weird stories.

9) Unsalted saltines: pointless and offensive.

10) I lived in New York for a few years.

When I came back to Canada and went grocery shopping, I laughed all day at the bag of sugar. It said “Please do not pick up by the fold.” Please! If a New York sugar bag was going to talk to you, it would just say “Go ahead. TRY IT.”

11) Recently I asked my Facebook friends what their weirdest crushes were. I said mine was the Cheetos cheetah. My friend Kate said “shy butchers.” At first I laughed at her and then I thought: Yeah. Shy butchers are pretty great.

12) I once had a plantar wart in my foot. I had to go to a podiatrist so he could

stab my heel with a needle coated with the juice of a South American beetle. During one of these beetle-butt-juicestabbing sessions, the doctor remarked on my awful-looking toenails. He said “You know, there’s a treatment for that toenail condition. But a possible side effect of the drug is kidney failure.” I said “No thanks.”

13) I know how it feels to be one of

two hundred people who are all desperately trying not to laugh at once. That’s because I was on a plane and they announced that our pilot was “Captain Mossfocker.” Why didn’t we just laugh out loud? I think it’s because we have a powerful instinct not to laugh at anyone who has your life in his hands.

14) In Scotland, I had a couple of

opportunities to see Loch Ness. The lake is probably bigger than you think. It’s huge! Also, if you go, you will feel a little bit annoyed when you don’t see the monster. Think about it: you’re not going to see the monster. You’re not!

CROSSOVER COACHING

FIERCE YOGA THERAPEUTICS

Caterina Alberti’s 25 years’ experience in the tourism industry providing coaching for leadership in management roles and entrepreneurial initiatives taught her invaluable skills which she now uses effectively as an Executive Business Coach. An accredited Executive Business Coach from Royal Roads University and a past director with the Vancouver Island Coaching Association, Caterina specializes in leadership working with small to large businesses to develop the vision for their company. “People have many different ideas it can be like chasing butterflies, coaching alignment with the vision and then assisting with the development of that vision is key” she explains. “Managers have a lot of day to day responsibilities it’s overwhelming, often important business insight and staff development can be delayed because of this. As a coach I can offer outside business perspectives and encourage solutions.” With a strong background in management and sales, Caterina is able to see opportunities to improve the work processes and people management. “One of the purposes of a coach is to guide change to realize the vision the business owner wants to achieve. It’s a fun time when the movement is exciting, the changes, strategies and steps create a roadmap to succeed.” Caterina recommends at least three meetings over a month, with the first meeting focusing on clarity and coach/owner relationship, so an element of trust and confidence can be built. Subsequent visits then focus on the vision and development. “Owners usually know what they want although I do think that everyone, when willing, can gain better focus to carry through the vision in a timely manner. Nobody seems to like change, it’s inevitable and with a coach at your side who can see the vision with you, then it is a whole lot easier.” Caterina also offers career coaching, with support and mentorship for those at a crossroad or who need clarity on their skills and strengths. Her philosophy is simple: ‘If you do what you love you will love what you do.’ Let’s crossover!

It was Lindsay Knazan’s passion for helping others move better and pain free, that led her to turn her 15 years’ experience of practicing traditional yoga into teaching Yoga Therapeutics. The owner of Fierce Studio with her husband Ari, is a certified Yoga Therapist and teaches yoga therapy privately and in group sessions. This little known, but growing branch of yoga is gaining recognition as a complement to physiotherapy and chiropractic, and has produced some amazing results. “Yoga therapy is a non-postural form of yoga and is for those who have tension, chronic pain, sore joints or medical conditions like arthritis,” Lindsay explains. “We help people move more optimally to alleviate pain by getting the joints moving the way they are supposed to move.” Functional movement is the foundation of yoga therapy, which also uses mantra, meditation, stillness and breath practices. Yoga poses may or may not be included in sessions – it depends on the individual needs and goals. Lindsay can empathise with her clients, as she has undergone a series of niggling injuries, and it was through attending a yoga class for back pain, that she discovered yoga therapy. “I do this for my students but also for my own healing journey. I have discovered that there is a way out of pain and you can feel better.” she says. In three – five private sessions, typically her clients are moving and functioning pain-free. Lindsay also offers group sessions, Yoga Explore, three times a week which builds postures with pure movement. A pre-registered class, Yoga for Calm, Clarity and Strength is a more customized session with home practice, and works towards the goals of the group. Fierce also offer Co-ed and Women's Only Fitness, Self Defense and Jiu Jitsu classes.

Victoria's Cadboro Bay has long been a favourite destination for sailing and kayaking. More recently, the beautiful sheltered bay has become a popular place to Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). The sport of SUP has deep origins in surfing and has continued to gain popularity over the past decade. It can be a great full-body workout as you power along the shoreline or a relaxing way to quietly explore around the many coves and islands within the bay. Enjoy a picnic in the park and let the kids stay and play on one of the best playgrounds in the area.

Tips for SUMMERTIME

CAR MAINTENANCE,

Within Budget

Victoria Transmission & Auto Care’s philosophy of educating their customers and earning their loyalty every visit designed the transparent and community-minded approach they feel proud of when opening up shop every morning. A fixture on Vancouver Island for over 50 years, Victoria Transmission & Auto Care strives to uphold the Greenest possible automotive repair and operating practices while offering great value to customers. Like these tips and a discount coupon to help your family stay safe during travels this summer while maintaining your car within budget.

available that covers these tips. See page 51. BRAKES • As most people are aware, the brakes are one of the most important parts of a car. • Have your brakes inspected every 9,600-16,000 km; inspect them at the first sign of failure to avoid accidents and possibly higher repair bills. • If your brakes are making noise, your car is pulling to one side, the brake pedal can go to the floor, or your car skids when braking, arrange to have your brakes inspected immediately. TIRES • Keep your tires properly inflated. This will improve fuel efficiency and also ensure your car can maneuver easily if in harm’s way. • Check your tire condition regularly and replace tires that have worn tread. • Ensure your spare tire is in good working condition. MOTOR OIL • You’ve heard it before – motor oil is the lifeblood of your car and keeps all the engine parts running efficiently and smoothly. • Check your oil before you head out on long distant trips.

• We recommend you change your oil every 5,000 km, or 3 months, whichever comes first. COOLANT SYSTEM • This system, not to be mistaken for the air conditioning system, should not be overlooked. • It includes: the condition of the radiator, water pump, belts, hoses, and the health of the antifreeze. • Coolant is vital to your engine and helps maintain the engine temperature to prevent overheating in the hot summer. WIPERS & VISION • This is probably the least fussed over system of the car by many drivers as they are an extremely simple device. • We encourage everyone to inspect their wipers to ensure they are in good working condition as a tear in the device can obstruct your vision. • Ensure the washer-fluid reservoir is full so you can clean your windows of any bugs, leaves or debris. BATTERY • Most car batteries have a three to five year lifespan, depending on your driving habits and climate. • If you have problems starting your vehicle, test your batteries voltage. • Have your battery tested before long trips and check your car’s battery cables to ensure they are firmly attached to the terminal. Clean your terminals immediately if you see any signs of corrosion. Cleaning your battery thoroughly requires disconnecting the cables to clean the hidden areas where contact is made with the terminals. AIR CONDITIONING • AC systems should be inspected annually, preferably before the summer heat vamps up. • If you notice your AC system isn’t cooling effectively, it’s a good idea to get it checked out right away. • Enjoy that summertime weather!

Affordable, Inclusive, & Creative. CALL TODAY! 250.419.2579

A Leo by sign and an artist specializing in rock sculpting, Ray Scudder is the “Ray” of Ray’s Furniture & Antiques in Duncan. He’s lived a life of embracing change and adapting to careers as he developed the business life he wanted. Soft-spoken, philosophical, friendly, and kind-hearted, Ray credits his success in pubic business since opening the shop in 1994 to his early career working with animals as a dairy farmer. Plus, four books that helped him explore his capabilities as a business owner working with the public. While giving his first ever speech, delivering a message to a group of adults seeking change in their lives, he recalls saying, “I hear you all want to make a change in your lives. That’s remarkable. The hardest part is making the decision. You should be proud!” These patient insights and considerations of the human psyche emanate through most any discussion with Ray. He knows that people often come in to see him, friends bring friends in, and great discussions happen. “It’s an experience when people come in to see me, and if they buy something, that’s a bonus, explains Ray.” From the age of 15 to 30 Ray worked for a dairy farm in The Fraser Valley. He continued in the dairy farming business in Saskatchewan and eventually returned to his childhood roots in BC, in 1991. “You can learn so much working on a farm and with animals which applies to working with people,” Ray describes. “You first need to learn the traits, wants, and needs of an animal. You need to listen, observe, and earn their respect. The animals are the boss just like my customers.” Bridging his career from dairy farming when he returned to Duncan he worked in construction. His back strained from the work so he started researching other careers. The first thought of opening a second hand furniture and antique shop came from his experience purchasing a new love seat. He searched for a good used one, but came up empty handed. From there he spent two years researching other second hand furniture stores in Duncan & Area market and talking to people about his idea. John’s Fine Furnishings being the only other store like it, it seemed like a done deal to open “Ray’s”. And here we are 21 years later. As for the four books he credits for his success and recognition of his abilities to work with the public, they are: “Growing A Business”, “How To Swim With Sharks”, “Cadillacs For Life”, and “The Greatest Salesman On Earth”. And what he took from them to work well with the public: The importance of listening, recognizing a need in the community, enjoying conversations with people, to be willing and open to learn more, and hard work comes easy when you’re enjoying what you do.

Pioneer House

EAT LOCAL AND LIVE GOOD! 4705 Trans Canada Hwy, Duncan With iconic stature – unavoidable even to the driving eye – stands the Pioneer House Restaurant at Whippletree Junction. Originally built to house the majestic “Bar from Butte” the intent was to become a “Saloon”. The licensing fell through and so stands the restaurant of today. Acquired by current owner Gerald John's family in 1975, the Pioneer House has experienced a multitude of transitions throughout the years. You'll discover the Bar from Butte Montana with its timeless beauty located on the North wall of the restaurant. The bars origins were in the St. Francis Saloon from 1890-1971. In its days in Butte it witnessed many quarrelsome card games, dancing cancan girls, and perhaps even a few gun fights (it's rumoured to have a bullet hole or two). Despite the stories it could tell, it still has its original finish, applied in 1890!

One must wonder how this amazing piece of history got to Vancouver Island. In the 1970's, Whippletree Junction founder Randy Streit stumbled upon the bar still standing proudly in the St. Francis Saloon, despite the fact that the old copper mining town was completely deserted. He immediately dismantled the bar and shipped it home. When selling off the plot where the Pioneer House now stands, the deed contained a note demanding that what was built must house the unique antiquity. Further to its iconic exterior and rich history, you'll discover a comfortable ambiance and popular menu. Much of the interior design comes from local logs built by local tradesmen. The mezzanine perches 20ft above ground level for a fabulous bird’s eye view of the rustic antique décor. The menu serves up local products, house-made dressing (all of which are celiac

friendly) and sauces. You won't get past the front door without being caught by the display of tempting in-house baking of pies noticeably our Peanut butter fudge pie and signature 'one acre' cinnamon buns! Pioneer House is happy to cater to all dietary needs, vegetarian, Celiac and more. Just ask their knowledgeable staff! From the Famous eggs bennies, to burgers, steak, pastas, salads and comfort dinners, rotating feature menus and two themed menus each year! The always fun and exciting Mexican menu runs from the beginning of March all the way through to Cinco de Mayo. The BBQ menu, this year having a Southern twist starts Father's Day weekend keeping you coming back until Labour Day weekend. Don't miss your BBQ! With the crowd-pleasing menus, ambiance, drink specials, and fabulous sunny patio… We'll see you soon!!!

AT SCOOPS

NATURAL FOODS Take Control! Process your own food!

4705 Trans Canada Hwy, Duncan Our Wholesale Food and Grain Orders: The list will be available online at www.scoopsnaturalfoods.com, and

in-store throughout the month of August. Orders and payment to be received by the second week of September and pick up available during the first week of October. Pick up dates are scheduled in Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo and Courtenay.

Commercially prepared foods are making us sick—it's fast, easy and in some cases toxic to our health. The truth is that our health hinges on changing our diets by sourcing natural foods and organic foods that are preservative free and contain no genetically modified components. Here at Scoops we work hard to source foods that our customers can feel confident about feeding their families. Over 25 years ago, our parents, John and Carol Stiles began the annual Wholesale Food and Grain Order. Twice a year, over 200 customers on Vancouver Island ordered organic and conventional grains, beans, rice, dried milk and other pantry staples. Over the years the order list has grown to include baking ingredients, dried fruit, nuts and chocolate. Six years ago we, Cam and Pam Stiles took over the administration of the order. Each

year, more and more people requested the top quality products in smaller amounts. So we started repackaging the bulk foods into smaller sized bags. The success of adding the smaller quantities forced us to recognize the need for affordable, nutritious foods in smaller quantities year-round. And so Scoops Natural Foods at Whippletree Junction was born. At Scoops we have both bulk bins and repackaged foods. Our spice section has grown significantly since we opened, organic and non-irradiated spices available in small packaging, always fresh as we go through a large quantity every week. We mill flour fresh in store for our customers in smaller quantities. Select your grain or beans (we have a dedicated gluten free mill) and we will mill them into fresh flour while you wait at no extra charge. Along with our delicious natural foods we also have a small appliance department

Whippletree Junction

which includes Bosch mixers, grain mills, juicers, dehydrators and other equipment designed to help you create nutritious meals at home. Each month we offer workshops and classes designed to teach our customers how to use basic ingredients to make healthy meals, how to extend the use of staple pantry ingredients. We also offer ethnic (mainly Indian) cooking classes. We have an in-house Nutritional Therapist who is available for drop in or prebooked appointments. We offer free delivery in the Cowichan Valley. This summer our new website will be launched where our customers can order groceries from the comfort of their home, delivered to your door at no extra charge. Our best selling items include our repackaged spices and our in house brand "Sookies Authentic" curry mixes - Pam's mums authentic recipes, in a kit that you can make at home.

Chemainus Many identify with Chemainus for the murals and The Chemainus Theatre, as the unique vibe to this delightfully interesting town. Further to these attractions you will discover an array of intriguing shops and eateries. You’ll find quality clothing shops from high-end to active and adventure wear, an impressive jewellery bead shop with the greatest selection and prices, vintage and antique shops, and everything in between. Don’t forget to visit Utopia Bakery for some sweet treats or any of the eateries listed on this spread. They’re all fantastic! Come for the murals, stay for the shopping!
