Nest Collective is a collection of hand-craft, vintage, furniture, gifts, and more by local artisans and entrepreneurs in the Cowichan Valley on beautiful Vancouver Island.

Be Silly - Be Creative - Be Kind Being a creative entrepreneur can be very rewarding, but is also a lot of hard work. Balance is critical to long-term success. If one isn’t mindful, too much focus on business can leave little time for creativity and too much focus on creativity can leave the business floundering. Retail space is expensive and then there’s banking, customer service, marketing, janitorial, maintenance... and the list goes on. NEST is our answer to that necessary balance. We are

106 Superior St, Victoria, BC V8V 1T1 (250) 380-0088 www.ilcovotrattoria.ca

Il Covo's bartender Chili is thrilled to present a Fall inspired “cozy” cocktail. A toasted marshmallow martini, made with homemade marshmallow infused vodka (2 oz), heavy cream (2 oz), 1 egg, vanilla and granulated sugar topped with mini marshmallows, then toasted to marshmallow-y perfection.

Our newest House Martini, the Hoppy Ending Martini, is made with locally distilled Sheringham Vodka infused in-house with Amarillo, Summit & Cascade hops, housemade Orange Liqueur and Victoria Spirits Orange bitters. We finish it off with freshly squeezed lemon, locally made Happy Planet orange juice and a dash of our hoppiest ale. For a twist try it with our Hop infused Gin.

Il Covo Trattoria is a memorable and unique dining experience. Being a Trattoria, we’re the perfect spot for any occasion where you can enjoy casual, rustic Italian cuisine in a warm old world Tuscan ambiance. Located in the historic area of downtown Victoria, and steps from the Inner Harbour.

Island Made. Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub has always believed that the measure of a good pub is in its ability to serve a good meal along with a good pint. We brew a wide range of traditional ales, wild and out there barrel aged sours, ciders and blends. Something for everyone’s pallet! We have always supported farm to table eating and drinking, and have partnered with over 35 local farmers and producers who supply us with fresh, local products all year long. FABULOUS FRINGE SHOWS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED Here’s a look at the 2015 pick of the Victoria fringe festival winners, and highlights from some of the most popular shows, voted by you, the audience. This year, I happened to catch at least three shows on the list of winners, and I’m proud to have garnered the inside scoop after attending the award ceremony and spoken to some of the artists. On the last night, at the last minute, I managed to catch the favorite solo show of the Festival, Rob Gee’s Icarus Dancing. Icarus Dancing was a hilarious, heartwarming story of a psychiatric patient named Simon, who believes he is the reincarnation of Egyptian King Ramses II, and escapes the hospital in hopes of flying to Egypt the next day. Along the way, he meets a sweet but abandoned little six year old girl, and helps save her from her drug-dealing grannie and some other unsavory folk. Although the police and all the professional doctors thinks he is delusional and sick, he is perhaps the most honest and likeable character in the show. Rob Gee has arguably crafted one of the best characters seen at the Victoria Fringe. On the second to last night, towards the tail end of the festival, I managed to see winner of the Favorite Dance/ Physical Theatre category, Damnspot Theatre’s The Wyrd Sisters. The lights flashed, six performers glided onstage, and I was completely mesmerized for the next sixty minutes. The Wyrd Sisters director, Alannah Bloch, uses the three witches from Macbeth in new and novel ways. Along with her talented designers and dancers, Bloch has created a sinister mix of Shakespearean dialogue from mysterious or magical works, eerie sound effects, pulsating drum and beat music, and twisted dance movements. So, what’s next on the horizon for Damnspot Theatre and The Wyrd Sisters? “We’re hoping to tour the show next summer… [But] my main goal above all would be to take

this show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,” says director Alannah Bloch. “I would love to bring The Wyrd Sisters home to Scotland….to see how the people from the land that Shakespeare came from think of the piece.” Winner of favorite new play, Kat Taddei’s TWO, was an artful piece about a very touchy subject matter- sexual violence. The two parallel worlds represented by the performers, parallel set pieces, as well as the inverted colored costumes for the two female leads (red shirt purple skirt, purple shirt red skirt), succeeded in conveying two diametrically opposed worlds. I can’t say that I was entirely comfortable watching this show, but that is what good theatre should do- put you out of your comfort zone. At least, theatre should invite you to experience something new and challenge old perceptions. List of Winners Victoria Fringe Festival 2015: Favourite Solo Show Icarus Dancing – Rob Gee Favourite Comedy God is a Scottish Drag Queen II – Mike Delamont Favourite Dance/Physical Theatre The Wyrd Sisters – Damnspot Theatre Favourite Drama Lieutenant Nun – Snafu Dance Theatre, Puente Theatre & TheatreSKAM Favourite Improv The 11 O’Clock Number – Grindstone Theatre Favourite Cabaret/Variety The Birdmann in Momentous Timing – The Birdmann Favourite Ensemble Lieutenant Nun – Snafu Dance Theatre, Puente Theatre & TheatreSKAM Favourite New Play Two – Catador Theatre Favourite Female Performer Gemma Wilcox – The Honeymoon Period is Officially Over Favourite Male Performer Brendan McLeod – Brain Audience Favourite – Pick of the Fringe Lieutenant Nun – Snafu Dance Theatre, Puente Theatre & TheatreSKAM

arts & E N TE RTAI NM ENT GO BANANAS AT THE HIPPEST PARTY IN TOWN! Held three times a year at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery, the ever-popular Urbanite party happening on Friday, November 6 from 8-11pm, features extraordinary banana artist Anna Banana and her 45 years of work. Why should you go? Urbanite is one of Victoria’s finest special events, and is a totally fun, fresh way to experience art. They even have a dance floor! Besides, it is a chance to dress up and look swanky. Who is going? This is a party for both the young (but not too young- there are cocktails), and old alike. It is a chance to mingle and meet new people, or gab with your friends over what you think of that particular artwork or artist on display, while sipping a custom-made cocktail or a glass of wine, listening to live music, and dabbling in some hands-on activities. GREAT CANADIAN MUSICIANS IN THIS LAND OF OZ Local Victoria-based funky neo-soul and R&B band, Impulse Response, heats up several venues next month, including Swans Pub on Oct 16th and Vista 18 on Nov 7. This dynamic trio started out covering songs by soulful artists such as Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, and Ray Charles, but now they’re writing their own

songs too. You might’ve caught a glimpse of them at the international JazzFest this past summer or on their short Okanagan tour. Take a ride with Canadian music icon Barney Bentall and the Cariboo Express in November when they visit Victoria in their annual Western Canadian tour, with proceeds benefiting The Mustard Seed. Barney Bentall reminds one of a young, acoustic era Bob Dylan, with his mix of grand old opry and folk styles. Nov 20th: Saaanichton, Friendship Community Church Nov 21st: Victoria, Centennial United Church Nov 22nd: Sooke, Sooke Community Theatre Tickets $32.00 www.barneybentall.com/the-cariboo-express/ Remember the 90’s? The singer who brought you Matthew Good Band is back and on his seventh solo album. Touring with Scott Helman at the Alix Goolden Hall on November 6, Matthew Good is arguably one of the most successful Canadian indie artists of all time. He has 20 Juno nominations under his belt, and four wins.

Reason #1: The timing of the event- It’s Halloween weekend, and if you are looking for an excuse to try out cosplay, (or dress up in elaborate costumes and parade around), what better way to celebrate than on Halloween. Plus, kids 12 and under get in free! Code says, “In all realistic fashion what IFcon is actually, is a massive Halloween party for charity.”

FIVE REASONS TO VISIT IFCON THIS HALLOWEEN WEEKEND

Reason #5: You used to read graphic novels as a kid- Even if you didn’t read graphic novels when you were younger, comic books are becoming increasingly popular in the mainstream media. Come meet the artists and learn how a comic book is created from start to finish.

What is IFCON? It is Victoria’s premiere fan event, a convention for enthusiasts. The IF stands for Island Fantasy, a name dear to event organizer Bill Code’s heart. “My first job was at a local comics store in 1978. Island Fantasy. This [IFCON] is an homage to Dick DeRyk.”

Reason #2: The event gives money to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation -100% of the proceeds after costs go to charity. Also support a worthy charitable organization at the charity auction. Reason #3: You’re a science-fiction, fantasy, or horror fan, or you simply want to try something different. Reason #4: Free acting and creative writing workshops-Notable TV celebrities, industry professionals (set and makeup artists, technicians, filmmakers, directors) and authors will be providing tips for participants of the convention. Maybe this is a chance to try something creative!

FITNESS

tips

staying active and safe this fall SAFETY FIRST BY LOUISE HODGSON-JONES

Staying active through fall and winter can be a challenge for many of us. It is the time of year when we want to curl up on the couch with a warm drink rather than face the darkness and inclement weather that the season brings. While it can be exhilarating to exercise outside when it is cooler and darker, given the choice of working out indoors or outdoors, we often go with the former choice, but with a little preparation and thought there is no reason why you can’t make the most of the outdoors. Whether you are running, cycling or walking having the right gear is crucial for comfort as well as safety. From head gear to shoes there is a myriad of choices out there and so there really isn’t any excuse for not dressing appropriately. Remember a warm body is a happy body so take the time to invest in some proper clothing. Ear bands and hats are an essential item if you feel the cold (remember 80% of your body heat is lost through the head) as are gloves or mitts. You may need to wear one, two or three layers on your body depending on the weather and wind chill. There are many thermal and technical moisturewicking fabrics out there so ask your favourite running, cycling or outdoor store for recommendations. Tights can come in varying degrees of thickness so this will depend on the temperature and your comfort. And don’t forget socks. Not cotton, but

18

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | FALL 2015

smart wool. Once we put the clocks back at the end of October, then the days will get shorter and we face the prospect of exercising in the dark, in the mornings and evenings. Being visible is very important and always remember, just because you can see, that oncoming car doesn’t mean he can see you. There are many poorly lit streets in Victoria and so wearing light colours is important. Many jackets are now made with reflective materials, but you can still buy bright yellow safety vests to go over any jacket. Runners and cyclists should check out a cool new product – the Tracer 360, a fibre optic visibility vest, which is lightweight and has multicolour flashing modes, which can be seen for over a quarter mile. Head lamps are also good to wear and cyclists should always have front and rear lights. If you are taking out your four-legged friend for a walk or run at night, it isn’t only you who needs to be visible. There are reflective leads and collars on the market and also LED lights specifically for attaching to a collar or harness. There is usually a lot more planning to do when exercising in the dark – the usual routes during the day may not appear as attractive at night. So this could be a good way to try new ones – just ensure they are well lit, well frequented and have good footing. If your neighbourhood is dark then

drive further afield. Running on Dallas Rd in winter with waves lashing the beaches and the sea spray in your face is very invigorating. Although we have a great trail system in Victoria, sections of the Galloping Goose and Lochside Trails aren’t well lit and so it may be best to avoid those at night. Exercising with a friend is always more fun at the best of times, buddying up in the winter is even better. We always talk a lot about hydration and fuelling while exercising during the summer months, but tend to neglect this over the fall and winter. It isn’t warm, I am not sweating so why do I need to drink water? We can still get dehydrated even in the cooler temperatures, our bodies don’t give us the obvious signs as they do in summer, but we still perspire – particularly if you are on a long run or ride – so always hydrate before and during and refuel afterwards. Exercising can be fun and safe during the dark days of fall and winter, you just need to be prepared to brave the elements and get out and do it. A GLOBAL INITIATIVE

Eat. Feed. Love by Olive the Senses

eat something that matters “Wouldn’t it be great if we could find a solution for world hunger by eating yummy food all day?”

~ Emily Lycopolus, co-owner of Olive the Senses & the NEW “Eat Feed Love” Global Website

What if the food you buy helped to feed the hungry around the world? How would you feel? Would this inspire passion, would this change where you buy your ingredients? These kinds of questions sparked the idea of Eat Feed Love, a division of Olive the Senses in Victoria BC. Olive the Senses, an infused olive oil and balsamic vinegar shop in The Hudson Building (formerly the Old Bay on Douglas) started three years ago, inspired by owners Steve & Emily Lycopolus’ connection to olive groves in Italy and passion for great food. The store became a hit, grounded in the love of food, creativity, and finding ways to help the community. Then came the question of “how can we give more”... The story of Eat Feed Love started in a kitchen with 3 friends and a pug. His name is Cedric, he’s short, black and very cute. Collectively the four owned Olive the Senses for

the past couple years and started asking themselves “what next?” They felt there was so much more we wanted to do, but more than anything they felt there was just so much more they wanted to give. Inspired by companies such as Toms and Make a Stand, they put their mighty little pug Cedric in charge of the store and set off to create Eat Feed Love. The rest is history.

How you can get involved: Every time you make a purchase at www.eatfeedlove.com or the Olive the Senses store, you are helping feed the hungry around the world. The new site even has a tracker of how many people you’ve helped feed so you can watch how you’re part of the difference. Join The Taste Club to help year-round – a great holiday gift or gift for yourself! About The Taste Club Sign up for our taste club and you'll receive a delicious box of goodies delivered to your doorstep every month! interACTIONS TO

help you save money BY SAIRA WATERS & JEN PATERSON Co-Founders of Dollar Divas

There is endless literature out there about how to save money, cut back your spending or live on less. While these are good things to know these are not the only actions that a person can take to improve things. It may seem counter intuitive, but charitable giving is a great way to improve your financial standing. When you take a step back and see charitable giving clearly there are many different ways that it can improve your quality of life and your financial picture.

Tax Breaks On a practical level there are tax incentives on charitable giving. You can earn a tax credit for any donation over $25.00 to a registered non-profit group. A tax credit is a reduction of the amount of tax owing. For example, if at the end of the day you owe $2500 in taxes and had a tax credit of $500 for charitable giving, you only have to pay $2000 to CRA. There are also additional tax credits for those who are first time donators. If you are not sure if you qualify ask a financial professional or check out the CRA website for more information.

Creating Happiness What is the purpose of money in the first place? One reason many of us strive towards financial independence is to create a life that ultimately makes us happy. A well-kept secret is there is a short cut to that happiness and it doesn’t involve winning the lottery. Charitable giving creates happier people. One study in particular done by Dunn, Aknin & Norton in 2008 gave random individuals between $5.00 and $20.00 to spend by the end of the day. Half were told to spend the money on themselves and the other half were told to spend it on someone else. That evening those who

spent the money on others reported higher levels of happiness throughout the day. The amount of money that was spent was not a factor, simply the act of spending it.

Creating a Mindset of Abundance One of the fastest ways to hurt your own bottom line is to live with a scarcity mindset. Steven Covey, the author or “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” describes the difference between scarcity and abundance mindsets as, “The Scarcity Mentality is the zero-sum paradigm of life. People with a Scarcity Mentality have a very difficult time sharing recognition and credit, power or profit – even with those who help in the production. The also have a very hard time being genuinely happy for the success of other people. The Abundance Mentality, on the other hand, flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security. It is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in sharing of prestige, of recognition, of profits, of decision-making. It opens possibilities, options, alternatives, and creativity.” A byproduct of giving other than creating happiness is that it also creates of mindset of abundance. By giving away some of your wealth you are telling you subconscious that you have enough, which opens you up to the possibilities.

It Doesn’t Need to Be Money If you are in a situation where money is so tight that you can barely budge, no problem. You don’t have to give money to enjoy the benefits of giving. Give your time by volunteering with a cause that you feel passionate. Do you love animals? Give your time to a rescue shelter. Enjoy spending time with kids? Become a volunteer with an after school program like Scouts, Girl Guides or Big Brother, Big Sister. Not only will this create the happiness and the abundance mentality but it also has a byproduct of increasing your personal network, which could bring new and unexpected opportunities your way. We all want to have more money in your bank accounts at the end of the month so giving some away might seem like a bad idea yet, it has been shown over and over again that giving some of your wealth away will create a life and a bank balance that will make you smile. Jen Paterson, Financial Advisor and Saira Waters, REALTOR® with Royal LePage, teamed up to create Dollar Divas, the Meetup group for women who want to be financially independent! Find us on Meetup & Facebook.

CROSSOVER COACHING

FIERCE YOGA THERAPEUTICS

Caterina Alberti’s 25 years’ experience in the tourism industry providing coaching for leadership in management roles and entrepreneurial initiatives taught her invaluable skills which she now uses effectively as an Executive Business Coach. An accredited Executive Business Coach from Royal Roads University and a past director with the Vancouver Island Coaching Association, Caterina specializes in leadership working with small to large businesses to develop the vision for their company. “People have many different ideas it can be like chasing butterflies, coaching alignment with the vision and then assisting with the development of that vision is key” she explains. “Managers have a lot of day to day responsibilities it’s overwhelming, often important business insight and staff development can be delayed because of this. As a coach I can offer outside business perspectives and encourage solutions.” With a strong background in management and sales, Caterina is able to see opportunities to improve the work processes and people management. “One of the purposes of a coach is to guide change to realize the vision the business owner wants to achieve. It’s a fun time when the movement is exciting, the changes, strategies and steps create a roadmap to succeed.” Caterina recommends at least three meetings over a month, with the first meeting focusing on clarity and coach/owner relationship, so an element of trust and confidence can be built. Subsequent visits then focus on the vision and development. “Owners usually know what they want although I do think that everyone, when willing, can gain better focus to carry through the vision in a timely manner. Nobody seems to like change, it’s inevitable and with a coach at your side who can see the vision with you, then it is a whole lot easier.” Caterina also offers career coaching, with support and mentorship for those at a crossroad or who need clarity on their skills and strengths. Her philosophy is simple: ‘If you do what you love you will love what you do.’ Let’s crossover!

It was Lindsay Knazan’s passion for helping others move better and pain free, that led her to turn her 15 years’ experience of practicing traditional yoga into teaching Yoga Therapeutics. The owner of Fierce Studio with her husband Ari, is a certified Yoga Therapist and teaches yoga therapy privately and in group sessions. This little known, but growing branch of yoga is gaining recognition as a complement to physiotherapy and chiropractic, and has produced some amazing results. “Yoga therapy is a non-postural form of yoga and is for those who have tension, chronic pain, sore joints or medical conditions like arthritis,” Lindsay explains. “We help people move more optimally to alleviate pain by getting the joints moving the way they are supposed to move.” Functional movement is the foundation of yoga therapy, which also uses mantra, meditation, stillness and breath practices. Yoga poses may or may not be included in sessions – it depends on the individual needs and goals. Lindsay can empathise with her clients, as she has undergone a series of niggling injuries, and it was through attending a yoga class for back pain, that she discovered yoga therapy. “I do this for my students but also for my own healing journey. I have discovered that there is a way out of pain and you can feel better.” she says. In three – five private sessions, typically her clients are moving and functioning pain-free. Lindsay also offers group sessions, Yoga Explore, three times a week which builds postures with pure movement. A pre-registered class, Yoga for Calm, Clarity and Strength is a more customized session with home practice, and works towards the goals of the group. Fierce also offer Co-ed and Women's Only Fitness, Self Defense and Jiu Jitsu classes.

tbsp Cinnamon Pear Dark Balsamic

Step 1 - In the bowl of a stand mixer, whip 3 egg whites until stiff peaks form, about 4-5 minutes. Set aside. Step 2 - Combine dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and whisk together. Combine milk, pumpkin, olive oil, egg and vinegar in a small bowl and stir to combine. Add pumpkin mixture to dry ingredients and stir to combine. Gently fold in egg whites, careful not to beat too hard as it will deflate your egg whites. Step 3 - In a preheated waffle iron, cook waffles as per the iron’s manufacturer instructions, usually 3-4 minutes cooking time. Serve warm with whipping cream, maple syrup, jam – whatever you darn well please!

olive oil pastry crust recipe cup Wild Mushroom and Sage Infused Olive Oil, divided sweet potato, peeled and sliced into chunks red onion, thinly sliced green apple, thinly sliced cup kale, washed and torn cup ricotta cheese cup mozzarella cheese tsp fleur de sel and cracked black pepper sage leaves, thinly sliced egg cup water

Step 1 - Preheat oven to 400*F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay out sweet potato and red onions. Drizzle with 2 tbsp EVOO and ¼ tsp fleur de sel and cracked pepper, and roast for 10 minutes. Remove and let cool. Step 2 - On a lightly floured sheet of parchment paper, roll out pastry to a 10-12” circle, turning over halfway through rolling to prevent sticking. Move parchment paper and rolled out pastry to a baking sheet. Step 3 - Spread ricotta cheese evenly in center of pastry, leaving a 2-3” border of pastry. Spread kale on top of ricotta, then arrange sweet potatoes, apple slices and onion over kale, keeping the 2-3” border intact. Finishing by sprinkling mozzarella cheese over filling and begin gently folding up perimeter of pastry, folding edges over itself. Sprinkle filling with remaining fleur de sel and pepper and brush pastry border with egg/water mixture to help seal edges and give pastry a glaze. Drizzle galette with remaining olive oil. Step 4 - Bake galette for 25-30 minutes, until crust is golden brown. Let cool on a rack before moving with two spatulas to a cutting board. Cut into wedges and serve warm.

I CAN SEE clearly

wellness

now

BY VICTORIA HOLMES, Inspirational Speaker, Writer, Life Coach

On August 30, my most influential teacher and often read author passed away in his sleep. Dr. Wayne Dyer is considered to be ‘The Father of Motivation’ and his enlightened understanding made him a friend to all of humankind. Over the last few weeks I have been re-reading some of his books as a way to pay my respect to a man who lived his life teaching people about self-reliance and spiritual awareness. He followed no particular world religion or teaching, but rather followed them all. He often mentioned his most influential teachers as Rumi, St. Francis of Assisi, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Lao Tzu, and many more. Dr. Wayne Dyer didn’t focus on their differences, but rather on their similarities, giving and love. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Dyer is ‘When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change’. I have found this to be a go-to mantra in my life. If I am in a place of conflict or fear, often by just repeating this thought in my mind, I can shift to a clearer perspective. This way, when life presents a challenge I can keep an open mind, give up my personal agenda (ego) and let Divine providence work on my behalf. Dr. Dyer’s memoir is appropriately titled I Can See Clearly Now. Over and over, he talks about his life experiences, things that for many people would have been absolute crises. Repeatedly, throughout the book, a chapter, or even a page, he will use the phrase ‘I can see clearly now that…’ this challenge needed to happen because when I look back I can see how I got where I am…how things would have been different…and how I wouldn’t have had the opportunities or people that I have in my life now. After reading this uplifting book I was inspired to journal some of my own experiences, and how I can see clearly now why things needed to happen in a certain way for me. It is an exercise that I am encouraging you to do as well. Recognise the Divine order of your life, even if it felt chaotic at the time, there was a higher agenda at work. For me, journaling was an opportunity to give up my personal history, and the things that I perceived as negative, and to release them with thankfulness. With this new perspective I could offer forgiveness and acceptance both to myself and to the other people who have influenced my life along the way. I have learned

that this reflection is an important part of discovering my own personal path of enlightenment, which is another reason why I am encouraging you to do the same. Remember, when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. In another best-selling book, You’ll See it When you Believe It, I have been encourage to be fearless with my dreams and imagination. I have repeatedly observed (in awe) that when I become clear on an outcome, it becomes worked out for me. I have been careful not to set tight parameters, but instead to trust that everything always works out for my highest good, and on its own timeline. I believe that every moment of my existence holds an infinite number of possibilities; my job is to get out of the way and allow the Universe to conspire in my favour! As long as I have a willingness to listen to my inner voice –my true self, my soul – I can go anywhere and do anything and simply allow any success to come to me. This great teacher taught me that ‘If you believe it will work out you will see opportunities – If you don’t you will see obstacles.’ By paying respect to my teacher, I urge you to do the same things that he has taught me to do. Be loving yet compassionate, fearless yet aware, humble yet magnificent, and most of all – as he liked to say – don’t die with your music still in you. Chemainus Many identify with Chemainus for the murals and The Chemainus Theatre, as the unique vibe to this delightfully interesting town. Further to these attractions you will discover an array of intriguing shops and eateries. You’ll find quality clothing shops from high-end to active and adventure wear, an impressive jewellery bead shop with the greatest selection and prices, vintage and antique shops, and everything in between. Don’t forget to visit Utopia Bakery for some sweet treats or any of the eateries listed on this spread. They’re all fantastic! Come for the murals, stay for the shopping!

PROUDLY SPONSORED IN PART BY: Throughout the season, Chemainus is alive with the Holiday spirit. With everything from the Festival of Trees and Little Town Christmas, to holiday plays and the year-round Christmas store, there are so many wonderful things to discover for old and young alike. Santa holds an annual invitation to the events and can often be seen sneaking a cookie and warm milk while saying hello. Children delight in the magically lit Waterwheel Park savouring a cup of warm coco from our local cafes. Spend the day strolling artisan boutiques and shops interspersed with a vibrant art and food culture. The artistic originality and charm of this small town make it unbiasedly idyllic. Spend some time getting to know an artisan community, spend some time in Chemainus.

COMMUNI TY

culture

Mercy Street PART 1

BY JENNY HAINSWORTH

All of the buildings, all of the cars were once just a dream in somebody's head - Peter Gabriel

I paint outside. Not on a cliff or in a field, but in the city. For whatever reason, urban landscapes touch my heart. To get started, I thread through the streets of downtown Victoria looking for a subject. Sometimes I choose from my wish-list of locations; sometimes I leave the precise subject up to chance. I find a spot with enough light, but where I won't be blocking a doorway, shop window or pedestrian traffic. I set up my rickety wooden travel easel, lay out my pastels, clip my paper to the drawing board, and begin. Perhaps an obvious question is: why put myself through this? Wouldn't it be easier to take a few good photos and do the painting at home, in a controlled environment? In a word, no. Not only would it be more difficult, it would be impossible. The result would be far away from what I am striving for. The experience of standing in the real presence of the subject is a completely essential ingredient to the painting. It's more than an ingredient -- it's the whole dish. Clouds, buildings, hardworking little urban trees -- I need to be warmed by the same sun that warms them, to have my hair messed by the same wind that flutters flags and brings down leaves and petals from branches overhead. I am frequently interrupted as I work. In a drawing session of three or four hours, I have calculated that my attention is deliberately sought by passersby about twenty times. Sometimes it's a quick remark, sometimes the person wants as long a conversation as possible. "Very good!" "Did the store hire you to do that?" "Mind if we watch?" "Did you go to art school?" And so on. This is by far the most challenging aspect of my work. What I do takes concentration. Every time someone 44

AlmostFreeMagazine.com | FALL 2015

addresses me, it is a struggle afterward to get my mind back into its working flow. I try to be patient; after all they usually mean well. Of course they're curious! You don't see artists working outside every day. But on the fifteenth interruption, in the thick of the work, I will hear a voice behind me yet again: "Oh, nice!"... and feel a panic welling up in my chest. Tears prickle my eyes. Please, I think, please – can't you leave me alone? Just this once? I try to be accommodating, but it's difficult. Would you interrupt a writer and ask to read his manuscript while he is working? It feels unfair. But I'll stop and chat, if it's a child who's looking. Or a shyly curious homeless person. I save my fuse for them. It's the "regular" people who are the trouble. One time a man didn't like my telling him that I couldn't talk to him because I was concentrating. He strode angrily away across the square, turned around, came back to me, thrust an expensive camera into my face and snapped a picture. Not of my art -- of my face. When I challenged him, he screamed that there was nothing I could do about it, because he wasn't breaking the law. What could I do? I continued drawing, hoping he wouldn't come back to attack me physically. But I didn't come here to complain about people; quite the opposite. There is another kind of comment I hear all the time. It's heart-rending to me, and I wanted to write about it. "I used to draw." Sometimes when a particular person see me work, it stirs something up in them. They can't keep the feeling inside. It's so strong that they need to tell me about it. This is different from idle curiosity or entitlement; it's a cry for help. We all have a creative impulse. It is a human need to make things where

nothing existed before. Artists are not a special breed. They are just people who didn't lose that spark, or who got it back after it was lost. I don't mean that everyone should be a painter, but certainly many, many more people would be painters if not for this strange paralysis. When people say to me "I used to draw..." I hear: "How did you get unfrozen? I am still frozen..." It is touching. I know all too well how they feel. I was there. I'm actually there every day. I wake up frozen in a block of ice that wants to keep me from performing the ritual of work. That threatens to bury me forever. The morning ice-demon that tells me to sleep, watch YouTube, walk on the beach. Just don't make art today, it whispers. Do anything but that. But I know the way to melt the ice. It's very ordinary magic, but it's magic nonetheless. I want to share it with you, if you are interested. In the second part of this piece, in the next issue, I will explain this melting spell I have found. If you can't wait that long, message me on my Facebook page (see below) I will talk to you about it, give you encouragement, and tell you exactly what I'm talking about. Just please -- if you see me working on some sidewalk in Victoria, show me the great mercy of walking past me silently. Jenny Hainsworth Auld is a Victoria artist and writer. Her art is represented in Asia by Art Sui Gallery in Taipei. She is currently seeking gallery representation in BC.
