Create an Inner Peace
Spending even a few minutes in mediation can restore calm and inner peace. When you meditate, your racing thoughts slow down, and a sense of well-being emerges. The benefits extend beyond your meditation session, improving your overall emotional and physical health.
Meditation is credited for helping you build stress-management skills; focusing on the present instead of worrying about the future; increasing self-awareness; gaining a clearer perspective on stressful situations, and reducing negative emotions. Studies have shown that meditation may be useful in treating allergies, depression, fatigue, anxiety disorders, high blood pressure, pain, sleep disorders, heart disease and substance abuse. (It is not, however, a substitute for traditional medical care.)
There are many types of meditation, including guided meditation or visualization, mantra meditation, yoga, Tai chi, Qi gong, and mindfulness. The point is usually to quiet your racing thoughts and achieve a sense of balance, calm and well-being by staying in the present moment.
The simplest way to begin to meditate is to set aside a few minutes (or as much time as you want) and practice deep breathing. Focus all your attention on your breath, and return your attention when it begins to wonder (and it will). You can also
create your own mantra, choosing a word or phrase you find calming. Repeat it silently and again, when other thoughts pop into your mind, gently return to repeating your mantra.
Another approach is a walking meditation, slowing your pace and concentrating on your movement rather than a destination. Choose a quiet walking path without traffic (some churches and offer labyrinths, paths set up in circular patterns that help you meditate as you walk).
Whatever form of meditation you choose, be sure to carve out time for it, no matter how hectic schedule. Inner peace, energy, optimism, and balance are wonderful gifts to yourself.
A graduate of Loyola University, Maryland, and credentialed by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Marisa is our resident Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist. Her expertise is based on working with recently rehabilitated clients, as a PT aide, and also with athletes involved in different sports. For these, she likes to create programs in which she comes up with functional and integrated exercises to assist them with their performance in their given sport, be it Track & Field, Soccer, Martial Arts, etc. She is committed to help her clients reach their fitness goals, and achieves that through a combination of strength training and high intensity interval training, which maximizes the time spent exercising. Since any fitness program has two components - nutrition and exercise, Marisa will also consult her clients on a healthy diet, caloric intake, and macronutrient consumption that are best suited for their fitness goals. Whether their goal is to lose the extra ten pounds or increase muscle mass, Marisa will challenge her clients every time they step into the gym. She likes to think outside the box, is very driven and creative, and guarantees fast results for her clients, usually within a few weeks of starting her custom-made program. By enrolling in a personal training program, her clients will have someone who will hold them accountable for their health and wellness every step of the way, keeping them focused on their fitness and health goals.

Health, in a Nutshell N uts are a nutritious treat! They contain mostly “good,” unsaturated fat and a variety of heart-healthy components like fiber, plant sterols and arginine, which widens and relaxes blood vessels. Hazelnuts, pistachios, cashews and other nuts contain great benefits, but here are some special examples:
ALMONDS: Almonds contain Vitamin E, which helps the body develop healthy nerves and cells in the heart and lungs, and may help stop plaque buildup in arteries. One ounce of almonds contains 8% of your daily calcium—as much as one-third of a cup of milk!
WALNUTS: One ounce contains omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E and 8% of the daily value of folate, a B vitamin that protects against birth defects and may also help fight cancer and heart disease.
BRAZIL NUTS: According to the Journal of Nutrition, selenium may help protect against cancer. Brazil nuts have about 210 times as much selenium as other nuts!
Shoulder Pain? Knee Pain?
We have the world’s most advanced healing technology.
Cold laser and PRP repair and restore without surgery.
Exercising for Two P regnant women don’t have to give up endorphin rushes or the other great benefits of exercise. The American Pregnancy Association recommends the following types of exercise for pregnant women:
WALKING: Wear good shoes to decrease pressure on your feet and avoid slipping when participating in this safe activity.
SWIMMING: Considered the safest exercise for pregnant women by many health care professionals, swimming offers a toning, cardiovascular workout without adding stress to the joints.
KEGEL: While Kegel exercises may not be beneficial for aerobics or aesthetic improvements, they are hugely beneficial for bladder control, hemorrhoid prevention, and stronger pelvic muscles that contribute to easier delivery. Also, they can be done anywhere, without anyone knowing!
Remember to stay away from high-stress activities like water-skiing and talk to your doctor before making any changes to your exercise regimen during pregnancy.

Health Tips for Women in Their 20s, 30s, 40s
A Short Course In Taking Care of You
“ W omen are adept at caring for others, but not always for themselves,” says Annette Cozzarelli-Franklin, MD, Medical Director of the Women’s Health Center at Clara Maass Medical Center. She advises that women establish regular medical screenings and healthy lifestyle habits beginning in their 20s, with modifications through their 40s to promote healthy aging.
Annette Cozzarelli-Franklin, MD
IN YOUR 20s “Women in their 20s are beginning an exciting time in their careers and education goals. However, they need to give themselves time for routine health screenings,” says Dr. Cozzarelli-Franklin.
A routine physical with a primary care physician is a good starting point. It’s important to know your family medical history and have immunization records for review. This is a good time to catch up on immunizations that are lacking. The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine, which can be received up to age 26, protects against certain types of cancer. Routine blood work testing is determined by your physician but usually includes cholesterol and blood sugar.
Gynecology visits also begin in the 20s, and screening guidelines regarding PAP smears and STD testing are determined by your gynecologist as they apply to you. Contraception options and family planning should also be discussed.
Have an eye examination at least every five years, more often if there are concerns. Breast self-exams are encouraged.
Skin screening depends on your family history, but you should routinely do skin self-screening, looking for any changes.
IN YOUR 30s “In this decade, many women are juggling family as well as work, which can demand most of your time—but making time for your health is imperative,” says Dr. Cozzarelli-Franklin.
Continue with your yearly physical exam, and discuss your exercise and diet for a healthier you. Annual blood work, including thyroid function, is important because thyroid disease is more prevalent during this decade.
Women may notice their metabolism is slower in their 30s, so it’s important to have healthy eating habits, including fruits and vegetables; to try to get at least seven hours of sleep each night; and to exercise routinely. Weight-bearing exercise is important, since bones reach their maximum strength during the early part of this decade.
46 Suburban Essex March 2020 Skin screening and eye exams should take place every two years, depending on the findings.
See your gynecologist yearly for a pelvic exam. Pregnancy should include close monitoring and a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine should be given to protect newborns. Any concerns about depression need prompt evaluation by your physician, especially during the postpartum period.
IN YOUR 40s In this decade, many women are handling careers and family responsibilities, and also beginning to care for aging parents. “These responsibilities can increase stress and make it easier to neglect yourself,” says Dr. Cozzarelli-Franklin.
Along with previously recommended screenings, yearly mammograms for women of average risk should begin no later than age 45, according to the American Cancer Society.
An EKG (electrocardiogram) should be done at least once during this decade as a baseline recording of the heart.
Perimenopause occurs during this decade, causing hormonal fluctuations as well as changes in weight, blood pressure and sleep patterns. Discuss these changes and how to address them with your physician.
In this decade, healthy habits to decrease stress through relaxation and exercise are important tools.
“Health in the 20s through the 40s ultimately involves knowing your body, making healthy lifestyle choices and seeing your physician for routine screenings and any other concerns that may come along,” says Dr.
Cozzarelli-Franklin. “Women do so well in caring for others. Now it’s time to put ourselves on the list.”
