mother often sees her daughter as huge extension of herself, while the teen is trying to develop her own independence and individuality. She wants to protect her daughter from making the same mistakes she made. She wants to give her daughter opportunities she never had.

Why is my daughter so mean to me Your daughter may be venting her frustrations in a way that feels safe ,she is counting on your unconditional love to allow her to act this way without taking responsibility for her behaviour.

When your daughter behaves disrespectfully towards you,it can take a toll on your emotional health.

As hard as it it, it’s important to gain some perspective and take action.

Evaluate the situation from neutral point of view. As a parent ,you need to step back to gauge the difference between typical adolescent behaviour and something more serious. You can also monitor your own behaviour and parenting style to strive for the best possible outcome for your daughter, your relationship and your sanity.

Teens are going through physical, intellectual and emotional changes 1)A teen can be unaware of how their behaviour affects others.

2) A teen may see a parent as a safe person to vent frustrations to.

3)A teen may indulge in disrespectful or rebellious behaviour to feel more in control of her life and relationships.

Many parents are desperate to cut through the behaviour patterns and angry emotion to reach teens. The biggest challenge is to see the situation objectively.

Focus On Behaviours not On The Cause Of Behaviours

(1) Learn to observe the eyeroll

While reflecting on your relationship may give you some insight into *why* your daughter behaves disrespectfully toward you, it may help to focus instead on the target behaviours that you want.

Eye roll is the basic girl response, which can make any parent’s blood boil. They all do it!

Don’t give them the power by overreacting to this almost instinctual teenage tic. Shake it off, but feel free to bring it up later when things have calmed down:

Our daughters deserve more dialogue before finding themselves in situations where they’re being pushed into sexual behaviour. For example,what should they do or say if kissing turns into unwanted touching? Too many girls go along with sexual advances that make them feel ashamed or distressed. As parents we need to demystify the pressures that they’ll inevitably face.

Some teenage girls prefere to wear skimpy outfits; depending on the occasion.Please note that in some cases when they put on very short shorts or revealing tops, they aren’t trying to invite the male gaze instead, they’re trying on what they believe is more womanly appearance.

(4)Tolerate their self adoption Teens are egomaniacs. It’s developmentally normal for them to focus on their problems and their desires. Don’t expect them to notice that you might be having a hard day,or that their request for expensive shoes is unreasonable. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t discuss empathy or frugality, but don’t be surprised at how selfish they can be. Remind yourself that it’s normal and temporary.

Parents have decided what they are comfortable with,but it’s useful to remember that dressing sexy is not about wanting sex.

It is necessary to discuss societical message inherent in by their self-presentation, but not in the heat of the moment. Choose a calm connected moment to explain that dressing like girls they see on social media or some celebrities shouldn’t be aquated with adulthood.

(6)Call out behaviour Teenage girls can be rude, obnoxious, and cruel. They know how to say things that hurt and push your buttons. Instead of getting into an argument or allowing your daughter to escalate the situation, just say, “You aren’t allowed to speak to me like that. Let’s talk about this another time’. Or consider a small punishment e.g taking their phone for a day if they misbehave. It’s important for them to learn that bad behaviour has ramifications.

It’s even more important for you to stay calm and remember that your teen is a sea of raging hormones. Don’t hold it against them or give them the silent treatment.

Negotiation and conversation are always better than scare tactics, hysteria and ultimatums.

During the teen years, girls shift their focus from family to their tribe of friends - and this tribe might be doing things you don’t approve of. However, as tempting as it is to say something negative about a girl who is being mean to your daughter or pressuring her to engage in negative behaviours, use caution. If she shares this with you, try not to overreact or disparage the friend.

Take a breath, and be happy that she’s opening up to you. Discuss the problem calmly to assess its severity. Is your daughter unloading, or is she asking for your assistance? If you withhold judgement and criticism, the

When they know our rules - even when they break them - they feel safe. Make them feel safe by being consistent and compassionate, authoritative not authoritarian. Parents who buy their kids beer or lie for them might feel cool in the moment, but they are undermining their role as parents. Teens, like all children, need to be parented.

(9)Help your daughter become critical Social media, television, and magazines are selling our daughters a distorted view of women. Take time to help your daughter think critically about the unrealistic images they’re presented of models and movie stars.

Teach her about all the effort that goes into making a women in the media look perfect, such as airbrushing and plastic surgery.

In fact point out to her that they’re industries that actually benefit from teenagers that feels they are less attractive..

A healthy dose of critical thinking will go far toward preserving her selfworth and promoting confidence in who she is, not who she thinks she should be.

(8)Let them learn from small failures

It’s no fun to watch any child struggle, but often parents are even more protective of their daughters. But a big part of building a sense of self-worth and resiliency is the ability to bounce back from a setback. Don’t bail your daughter out of a science project she procrastinated about or write a note to her teacher if she didn’t do her homework. Allow your daughter to learn from the difficult situation and realize that the world doesn’t come to an end if she screws up. Facing consequences and overcoming challenges is part of becoming a resilient adult. *Too many teens lack the fortitude to make it in college* because of parental intervation. (10)Own up to your own bad behaviour Only a saint can parent a teen without having a few moments she is ashamed of. If you have resorted to shouting, shaming or throwing your power around, you’re not alone. But you need to acknowledge your bad behaviour and move forward. Take ownership by apologizing. An apology will go far in terms of role modelling and building connection. Show your daughter that being an adult doesn’t mean being perfect, but it does mean admitting to your mistakes and making amends.

REAL STORY: Polygamy

own understanding, it is not very clear on the issue of polygamy, it depends on the beliefs or norms and values of a particular church.

I will begin by telling you my own experience in a polygamous relationship or what I would have wanted to call “marriage�. This experience is a journey I would not wish even on my worst enemy. It was torturous, exhausting and draining. The pain and suffering were unimaginable, to make matters worse, the person who had dragged me into the situation callously seemed to care less and oblivious to my pain. I think at one time they became selfish and self-centred. As long as they were happy, it was good.

Introduction In a normal polygamy, group marriage or plural marriage setup, the women are not supposed to be rivals, but rather sisters, however, in most cases today, starting polygamy is declaring a war that will go on for generations. In our African culture, way back it was believed that a man in possession of a good fortune should have many wives to spend the fortune with. Depending on how it is handled, polygamy can be complicated, stressful or manageable. It comes with a lot of emotional roller coasting and tears. For some it can also be joyous, especially those from cultures that acknowledge polygamy or religion that acknowledge it. Polygamy then becomes a way of building one happy family.

The key is how it starts or how it is initiated, who has done it and why they have done it. It also takes a lot of transparency and respect from all the parties involved and a lot of tol-

Women May 2020 I had to start dealing with my ex-husband’s countless girlfriends calling to abuse me verbally and some were even claiming that he was not sending any child support. For the long 13 years that we were married to say we stayed in the same house for more than 3 weeks would be a lie, my husband preferred to work in Harare, whilst he sent me to stay in our home in Bulawayo. I was barely 21 years of age then, with 2 little children both under 3 years of age to take a care, a home to run and my own job. I was very immature and naïve; I made my own fair share of mistakes in as far as mismanagement of the home and finances was concerned. I will not use immaturity as an excuse, maybe it was, but my finances were a mess. Later on, that is the excuse I gave my husband for abusing me and never taking care of his children. The first 8 years of my marriage, I didn’t even know how much my ex-husband earned or exactly where he stayed. After having 4 children, I called it quits when I discovered that he had 3 children with a woman I knew well and who knew our problems in and out. I decided I had had enough and could not handle it anymore because looking at it now, the last 4 years I stayed at my home, I was all alone, the marriage was long over, but it was perfect in the face of people because I was very good at hiding pain and covering up for him.

Then came Mr Polygamy, whom in my eyes I saw as “my saviour”, the one who understood my situation because just after telling him my story, he became too understanding and he took the position of that perfect gentleman who would never hurt a fly. In some ways he was, but one, in no time we had moved in together although he stayed overseas and would only come to see me once in 3 months. This was good enough for me because in my entire life, I have never stayed with a man on day to day basis. He narrated his story of his supposedly “ex-wife”, when one day I saw messages in his mobile phone.

He managed somehow, I always ask myself how, to convince me that they had separated after she made some mistakes that were unforgivable, I was happy I had finally found someone who was or had kind of sailed in the same bought as me. One day, the woman texted me, introduced herself and claimed that she was his wife, before I could even text back, he had called told me to ignore her and tell her off and he convinced me that they were no longer together. He kept on feeding me with information that made me want to save him from this woman, at any given chance I would attack the poor woman with words and tell her off.

of convincing me that those who were ignoring me now were jealousy of me because they were not married and by him marrying me, they would lose some financial benefits that they were getting from him. Well with all that I ignored them as well, life went on.

Poor woman, she didn’t deserve any of what I said, had I known that I had gotten myself from the frying pan right into the fire. I would see some red flags here and there, but somehow, he managed to convince me otherwise, I am so naïve and stupid, well I was.

Not anymore. This went on for about 5 years to the extend that this man, just to prove to me that he was sincere and was over the first relationship, he went to my parents with part of his family to pay lobola. He had his allies in the family who helped him convince me that the first wife was no longer part of his life, but they had children together.

He had a conversion with his wife for an hour, he was now telling her or rather convincing her that they had to come down to Zimbabwe to attend a cousin’s wedding and there, he wanted to officialise his relationship with me and introduce me to her. Manipulative as he was, he told her that, because she had made a mistake in the past, she had to accept me and that he loved us both. I listened all that in silence. This was all news and shocking to me.

Most of us suffer for the sake of status and people pleasing. I wanted to appear married to my family and have that dignity, looking back, I should have shouted and risked the stigma and discrimination because what I went through on my own was too much, if I were not strong, I would have committed suicide. Going back now, I feel so sorry for the first wife, for if I felt like this, how about her, who had been through thick and thin with this husband of her youth, I feel bad that somethings I was mean to her and would talk anyhow. All this I realised too late, but I managed to go back to apologise though, I never got acknowledgement and I was lashed at for that, but at least I understand her pain. Silence is surely golden, I learnt to keep quiet and deal with my pain. I realised that some of the way I acted was actually reacting to my pain and shock, it was a way of trying to handle what had befallen me that I was failing to accept.

ritable and neglected those who cared for me, I was fighting my own war that nobody understood. I couldn’t face my family to tell them what had befallen me, lest they say I have a spirit of anti-marriage, I waited for events to unfold on their own because in the first instance they never supported me in leaving my first husband even after everything that he had done. They wanted me to endure it, to accept but I couldn’t, little did I know that history would repeat itself, only this time I was the other woman. I was in a dilemma. The children from both sides suffered in silent. My own children saw what was happening, but they had no say as they became “kept children”. I also started living at the mercy of their fights, it would be rosier my side when they fought because that way, I would get attention and I think the reverse is true also. It became payback time as well from the senior wife, the same kind of rude statements that I subjected her to, I also got from her, she was now in control of things and holding the stick, I was at her mercy. I became a victim of lies from the man, because at that time, I was not yet strong enough to walk away, I still loved the man and kept on making excuses for his behaviour and lies. The only good thing is I stayed with my older cousin who was help-

Those mediating will continue to do so until they reach common ground with the senior wife.

Again, men have a weakness of telling lies and bad-mouthing the senior wife to their girlfriends when they are with them, which makes them big-headed and feel they have the right to look down on the senior wife.

This is wrong, the proper way would be for the husband to tell the prospective wife that he still loves and respects his wife and she is coming in as a helper not to take over. If all this is made clear from the beginning, then polygamy becomes manageable with a lot of mutual respect from both parties.

Again, the junior wife should know before coming in that she comes a a younger sister to the senior wife as well as a daughter inlaw and she should afford her such respect for them to be able to run the home together.

It should also be clear that taken over is out of the question and sometimes the senior wife will appear more equal than the junior.

The prospect must know what she is getting herself into, accept it or if doesn’t then she should not attempt to be a second wife.

It is also subjecting yourself to emotional torture and accepting double standards. I would never encourage women to be involved to marry into a polygamous marriage as this is associated with a lot of stress and it creates hate. This also affects children greatly as they grow up in a discriminatory environment associated with a lot of hate speech and inequality. It can also result in a lot of abuse both to the children and the women as they get vulnerable and exposed to abuse.

It comes with a lot of emotional tortures and where children are involved it is even more complicated as children are always inclined to their maternal side. Child welfare becomes a great concern in a polygamous marriage because of intra-household conflict. It also places women in unnecessary competition with another wife and lower their self-esteem and the value they put on themselves.

Many women endure it, but they are never entirely happy, but because of their personal

circumstances, they just put up with it. Polygamy is unfair and exploitive of woman who are mostly vulnerable. My opinion is, it is not worth it, it is better to start all over, we always find a way of rising again, God makes a way and if we are willing, we will find that way.

One way or the other, polygamy is imposed on women, mostly by deceitful males who subject women to emotional violence and belittlement. In most cases it comes as a result of dishonest men and many women do not choose to go into it, but they find themselves in situations that are sometimes not easily reversable and helpless because they love the man or are now dependant on the man and because of poverty they end up just succumbing. However traditionally, it was because it was encourage that if a man cannot have just one wife it was better to bring another home so that the woman can help each other and women then were viewed as some kind of asset where the more wives you had, the more respect you earned in society. It was also for manpower in the fields as having many women meant a big harvest. During those days, women accepted polygamy easily and they would embrace the many women the husband would bring. Some women consent to go in polygamy for the sake of financial security due to economic pressures. In other cultures, like the Zulu, it is still commonly practised, and a man is a man and is mostly defined by the number of wives. Again, desperation push women to go into polygamous marriages, maybe because of age or pressure from the family, they end up settling for anything that comes their way.

An average of 45 children are given presents at the prize giving each year.

Our first project was the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. This concept has been used in many countries and we found it to be an amazing way to start our acts of kindness as it brought out happiness and joy to many children. We decided to start the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal at a local learning center in Harare known as Mavambo Learning Center.

Once all the items are bought they are packed and wrapped in a shoe box ready to be presented to the children. The beauty about this initiative is so many of these children have never received a gift before so these are life changing moments for them.

Mavambo Learning Centre is run by the Catholic Redemptorists led by Brother Benjamin Posvo and is situated in Mabvuku. It is a Centre that educates mostly orphaned children. The children are taken at a young age from the community with many of them not able to read and write. This all changes at Mavambo Learning Centre as they are taught basic life skills as well as how to read and write, by teaching them subjects such as English, Mathematics and Shona. As they progress with their education they end up in High School, Colleges and Universities but Mavambo Learning Centre continues in supporting their growth and stages in life.

We have carried out the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal for 4 years now and it is our hope and dream to continue. We owe it to our many friends and colleagues that continue to make this possible and we will be looking for more life changing projects to take part in in the very near future. At the end of the year every year, the Learning Center has their Annual Graduation and Prize Giving Ceremony and this is where the Christmas boxes are presented to the children as a way to add some love and light to their Graduation Ceremony and Christmas.

I am a Philanthropist, an enterprising entrepreneur , hardworking, cheerful, confident,God fearing woman, and a mother of 3 beautiful children.

My story

In 2010 I lost my first born to cancer.

Jessy was 11 years old when I lost her and during that time I was 4 months pregnant with my second baby.

In my life I never thought a child could be diagnosed with Cancer. Jessy used to complain of headaches and when I took her to hospital after some tests, I was told my child had eye cancer and she had a few months to live.

I was devastated as I was also pregnant, and I used to cry a lot at night when everyone was asleep. I was heart broken but I had to be strong for my little girl.

Jessy was admitted to a hospital in Harare and there I saw a number of kids suffering from different types of cancer.

It was painful to watch these kids suffering from cancer.The most painful part is these kids had developed a bond and whenever one of them pass on,I could see the pain and sorrow in their eyes and Jessy would say “Mom one day it’s going to be me”. Whenever she said these words I felt like someone was stabbing me right on my heart. I had to be strong for my little girl.

Jessy used to write Poems that where displayed on the hospital noticeboard and in newspapers.

She was strong and a lot of people visited her. I was literally staying there in the hospital with my pregnancy.

Jessy passed on after 9 months when my second born was 4 months old, I was shattered but my late husband comforted me and he was by my side through thick and thin.I later opened my company

In May 2018 my husband was ill and he had stomach pains. I took him to the hospital. That was the first time for him to be hospitalized his whole life. He was diag-

elanda Bepura a.k.a Mel-B-Mel Huchi was born on the 17th of January 1993 in a small farming town called Karoi, in Northern Zimbabwe. A female budding reggae singer and songwriter who enjoys fashion and designing in her spare time. Mel started singing from a tender age, going through the ranks dating back to school choirs, jazz bands and gospel groups between years 2009 – 2014 Born in a Christian family to a father who is a pastor, Mel was raised on much more church music than any other and she natures her gift of writing meaningful messages; a gift she derived from listening to gospel music. Apart from gospel music Mel also grew on a lot of reggae from Bob Marley and Lucky Dube, soul and country from Michael Bolton and Dolly Parton which were her father’s favourites. She discovered her song writing ability in high school when she wrote two songs that made it on the Howard High School 2009 DVD album and since then she has been writing songs.

From being a singer in church to being a jazz singer, Mel became a solo artist in the year 2014 and has many singles to her name. The now reggae singer is proud to be her own writer as she aims to be an inspiration to every ear that listens to her music which she describes as her expression of that which cannot be said i.e. own life experiences and thoughts similar to yours. She is inspired by female reggae musician Etana and aims to rise in music and make the best of her abilities as an Artiste.

Over the years she has managed to gain much experience from working with seasoned musicians in the Zimbabwe industry. From being one of the lead singers in gospel groups such as Zimpraise Choir, Extreme Afriq and Sweet Inspiration to becoming a backing vocalist for artists such as Kudzai Sevenzo and Rockford Josphat aka Roki among many others, she has also collaborated with other artists such as Jah Prayzah, Guspy Warrior and Shinsoman. Mel has recorded with producers such as Mac Dee (Eternity), DJ Tamuka, Jamaican Kemson Fenton a.k.a Macgyver, Rodney. Follow this strong virtuous African woman on a wonderful music journey as she tells a story through reggae music.
