THESIS MAY 2010

What happens when you are able to convert a dead space into a community hub? Catalyst is about invigorating communities. It is a community development that re-utilizes dead space in urban environments to re-create an urban hub for communal revitalization . It is an environment that initiates the possibility of living close to where you work, eat, drink, play, get your groceries, bond with your neighbours under the sun, or have your kids taken care of right next to your front door.

The Thesis Icon represents the journey a person will go through in discovering the meaning of communal living through visiting my thesis site. Each slide represent a particular aspect in the design, such as commmunal activity (farming), transportation (the city grid), and connecting people back to nature. People are free to change the order of the slides in order to create their own story behind what communal living means to them.

The concept sketches are based on the theme where the finished project will become a new place of exploration for local community. It will act as a communal hub where people will be able to see it from far away and be able to access it easily.

THESIS RESEARCH 2009

This book is a document that setup the criteria for my final year Thesis Project. My thesis is about investigating nature as a possible source of inspiration to develop new ways of modeling communities. Given the global stresses we are experiencing currently, this may be a propitious opportunity to discover other systems and structures to build smarter communities that are more in tune with natural global cycles and ecosystems.

PRINTMAKING JUNE 2008

Prologue is a visual narrative on my awkward transitional period when I first arrive Toronto in year 2005.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

“All endings are also beginnings. We just don’t know it at that time. I thought everything was coming to an end. To my surprise, the real story was just about to start.”

Each photo slide in Prologue resembles my different stages of changes and memorable moments during my first year of independance in a foreign country.

WOOD WORK APRIL 2008

As a child, I’m always fascinated by the complex structures of chinese characters. “Symbols” is my personal ongoing series of wood jewelry inspired by chinese characters.

By laminating different kinds of wood together (ie. walnut and maple), this deconstructed and abstracted ancient writing can be wearable with personality and style.

PRINTMAKING JUNE 2008

Faces is a Zine publication on one’s identity. It is our individuality that makes us special and recognizable, if not we are simply a group of “faces” with no particular meaning. The Zine also expresses the idea of abandoning subjective perceptions and looking beyond one’s appearance to bridge our connections with people around us.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

A Zine is a small scale circulation publication of original texts and images. The term includes any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced using a photocopier on a variety of paper. A significant majority of zines are produced in less than 100 editions, although up to 5,000 editions are not uncommon in the field.

The primary intent of Zine publications are not on profit, but rather on expressing personal thoughts and create medium for discussions.

PROFESSIONAL APRIL 2010 CPAR

Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) has teamed up with the Ontario College of Art & Design’s (OCAD), through the joint faculty/student design team ‘Frogpond’ to launch Foodprints: Edible Environments, Sustainable Gardens. The exhibit launched in Toronto in March 2010 as a feature garden exhibit at Canada Blooms – Canada’s largest flower and garden festival.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

Inspired by the ‘edible gardens’ designs of small-scale farmers that CPAR are working with in Africa, Foodprints takes visitors on a journey illustrating the ways that African farmers are building resilience against climate change, providing healthy food for families and creating incomes for a sustainable future.
