WHAT IS BULLYING ? • According to Olweus ( 1993 ) Bullying is a recurring series of aggressive acts and attitudes, against a person who is a bit weaker.

• Its basic characteristics are : • 1. The frequency • 2. The tension and the duration • 3. The degree of intent and the degree of self-control demonstration


TEASING & BULLYING : THE MAIN DIFFERENCE • TEASING is an act, between friends, it doesn’t include physical pain and in that sense is similar to a joke. It turns into bullying, if it has been happening for a long period of time and the recipient, feels that the acts of the others aren’t a joke or even a game !


VIOLENCE AND BULLYING Violence is a normal property of a person, which characterizes every animal species and is manifesting itself in different ways depending upon the age, the gender and the cultural origin of the person. It also, involves, the intense element of claiming and that’s why it doesn’t always get perceived as a negative human manifestation.


TYPES OF BULLYING : 1. VERBAL Verbal bullying includes :

• 1. Teasing • 2. Cursing and nicknames • 3. Mockery • 4. Threats and rude comments


TYPES OF BULLYING : 2. EMOTIONAL It includes :

• 1. Spread of malignancies and fake rumors • 2. Abusive or playful expressions about the race, nationality, disability and sexual identity of the victim.


TYPES OF BULLYING : 3. PSYCHOLOGICAL Exclusion from :

• 1. Social groups • 2. Group activities • 3. Gossips, which lead to the social isolation of the victim


TYPES OF BULLYING : 4. PHYSICAL 1. Physical violence

• 2. Hits, stings, bites, pushes, tripods, punches and destruction • 3. Theft of person property


TYPES OF BULLYING : 5. SOCIAL • 1. Systematic exclusion of the victim from social activities • 2. Isolation • 3. Indifference


TYPES OF BULLYING : 6. SEXUAL 1. Teasing of sexual content

• 2. Immoral gestures • 3. Unwanted touches • 4. Disclosure of sex life • 5. Sexual assaults


FORMS OF BULLYING : 7. RACIST 1. Verbal

• 2. Emotional • 3. Physical Three types of violence, which aim to offend the victim, because of his origin.

THE PERSON WHO EXERCISES BULLYING • 1. Need for domination and power enforcement • 2. Weakness in controlling his impulsions • 3. Inability to keep things in proportion • 4. Reduced ability of self-control • 5. Weakness in following rules and limits • 6. Absolute lack of empathy • 7. Unusually low anxiety


THE PERSON WHO RECEIVES BULLYING • 1. Self-esteem lower than average • 2. Sense of despair, shame • 3. Inability to solve problems • 4. Exhibits signs of depression • 5. Inability to express his emotions • 6. Sense of loneliness • 7. Tendency for isolation


THE PERSON WHO RECEIVES BULLYING • 8. Denies making new friendships and having social relationships • 9. Low academic performance, inexcusable absences • 10. Behavior disorder • 11. Anxiety, fears • 12. Insecurity • 13. Suicide tendencies • 14. Psychological – Psychosomatic problems


THE PERSON WHO RECEIVES BULLYING • 15. Sleeping disorders, night urination • 16. Biting his claws • 17. Loss of cheerfulness


VIEWER • 1. Feelings of anger, shame and guilt, due to his lack of involvement • 2. Remains indifferent, distant and occasionally neutral • 3. Unaware of how to react • 4. Believes that there is always someone more suitable to take action • 5. Afraid of not identifying himself with the bully • 6. Excuses fearful behavior • 7. Suppressed by fellow students and peers • 8. Unable to understand that bullying is a matter, which concerns everybody


MEASURES TO BE TAKEN


MEASURES TO BE TAKEN : A. BY THE HEADMASTER • 1. Record the event ( where, when, who was involved, what type of bullying was applied )

• 2. Specify if it is about repeated, aggressive behaviors. If yes, contact the bully’s parents.

• 3. Define the consequences for the victimizer, after discussing with his parents and the teachers

• 4. Organize how the prolem will be observed


MEASURES TO BE TAKEN : B. BY THE TEACHERS • 1. Talk to the victim • 2. Listen carefully and seriously to what the victim has to tell you • 3. Ensure that you will act immediately and you will protect the victim • 4. Tell him, that you are available for any possible assistance • 5. Ask him to update you, with regard to what is happening with his situation • 6. Discuss with his parents and show that you are determined to take action • 7. Verify who the bully is • 8. Search, if there is a group of teens that encourage the bully. • 9. Take the victimizer, to th headmaster’s office.


MEASURES TO BE TAKEN : C. BY THE CLASSMATES • 1. Find out, which of the classmates were present, at the incident • 2. Ascertain, if they were active or passive viewers, when the incident took place

• 3. Discuss with them the most appropriate behavior to be exhibited at such accidents

• 4. Have a chat with them, on what could be done, in order to avoid bullying


MEASURES TO BE TAKEN : D. BY THE VICTIM’S PARENTS • 1. Collaborate with school • 2. Find out the magnitude and the severity of the problem • 3. Offer your child support and security • 4. Listen to what it has to say, carefully, about its emotions and its needs • 5. Don’t judge it • 6. Watch both the development of the situation and the health of your child


STOP BULLYING ! NOBODY DESERVES TO FEEL WORTHLESS !
