How did you first become involved with performing? When I was in secondary school, I was an anxious young girl but I found myself welcomed into the school Kapa Haka, Choir, Instrumental group, Barbershop group, & musicals where I found my niche.
How long have you been performing? About 10 years, but as a professional, around 6 years
If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be? Often I see artists making it because they How would you describe your music? What can afford to but they’re not always that are your songs about? talented when you hear them live. I’d choose My live gigs I sing a lot of cover music, but my to find people in little towns or cities that are original music is often about tough love, working hard playing in bars/restaurants, great love, confusion or subjects I feel with raw talent and huge dedication. passionate about such as bullying and acceptance. Have you entered any contests to enhance your career? If so, describe your experience Have you had any training or are you and what you gained from entering. Would self-taught? you enter a contest again? I don’t know if I would consider choir & I entered a talent show once, got told I was a school groups as training, I did do a couple great singer/performer but they had of singing lessons when I was 5 years old but something or someone else in mind. I found I would say that I am self taught. It was my there wasn’t an equal chance and it leads me medicine as a teen. to believe shows like that are rigged. Always a good watch though! Where do you get your inspiration? It may sound silly, but I feel that I am my own Do you have any other talents you would like inspiration at times. I have drawn the short to share with us? stick so many times which has made me I have recently started performing a want to throw it all in but I’ve kept going, and contortion dance routine in my cabaret I won’t ever stop. Of course I am inspired by shows. Having gymnastics background I am those raw musicians who share all of their still very strong & flexible. My routine secrets and leave themselves vulnerable consists of strength skills, flexibility skills within their music. and flips. I also still love heading down to my local gymnastics club and chucking old What made you realize you wanted to routines! Sometimes I can’t believe I can still pursue a career in music? do it all! Because it’s all that I breathe, it’s all that I think about, I constantly feel it flowing How do you relax when you’re not through my veins. performing or working? I love travelling, sport, spending time with When did you discover your love of loved ones, watching good TV and eating performing? great food of course! When I was a young gymnast, I used to wow the audience with my polished floor routine. Where do you see yourself in the next five I was a perfectionist & loved the stage, I years? Do you have any goals that you are think that has lead me to where I am now. aiming for? Ideally I’ll be a signed musician by then, but if What was the first song you ever performed not, plan B is to be teaching, running in public? fantastic community events, & singing great If I answer this, I may be a little crazy to gigs. remember that far back! This isn’t the first song I performed but a memorable moment Tell us about your most embarrassing for me was at my senior prize giving where I moment on stage, if you care to share it! sang “Together we are one” By Delta When I was in secondary school I got stage Goodrem. I chose it because it described fright, I ran off crying in front of the entire perfectly what year 13 had been through school! What a dork lol. that year, sadly a lot of people lost a good friend and class mate to a brain tumor What has been your wildest experience shortly before the year ended. since starting out as a performer? Travelling to different locations around New What has been the biggest challenge for Zealand, performing and then having people your career to date? introduce themselves afterwards wanting Trying to record an album, it’s very photos, booking me on the spot, & giving me expensive & doesn’t come easily! huge compliments, way to make a girl feel famous!
9
What has been the hardest part of being involved in this industry? Being let down by other people in the industry who know and understand that it isn’t an easy road, yet they don’t really care.
What’s your favourite type of music? Favourite band? I love almost anything, as I get older I begin to appreciate different music genres more and more.
If you could perform with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Definitely P!NK, followed by Adele. P!NK has this honesty about her, as well as a huge passion to sing, perform & say whatever she wants to say. It doesn’t look like she is hiding or trying to be anything that she’s not, & she doesn’t care what people think. She has accepted herself and I love that. I would love to sing a song with her, I think our voices would match incredibly, I think we are similar performers and have somewhat similar backgrounds.
Where is the furthest from home you have performed? At this Stage, New South Wales, & Brisbane, Australia.
Have you been involved in any benefit performances? What was it and how did you become involved? Yes, I’ve performed at your typical fundraiser etc but the biggest show I performed for was BIG GAY OUT in 2013 in Auckland. I was told to but my name forward & they asked me to perform. I wanted to be there to support the community & the marriage equality bill. I’ll be back again in 2014. If you had the chance to perform one song to a worldwide audience that would leave a great impact on the world of today what would you choose and why? That’s a hard question. I couldn’t choose one particular song, there are too many! Who is your fan base? Do you have a street team? My friends and family of course but I also have a strong fan base in the LGBT community around New Zealand and Australia. What do family and friends think of your music? Do they support you? Every time I come back from the studio with a new song, or have a photo in the paper etc I always get a positive or excitable comment from my Mum in particular, shortly followed by “I want a copy of that!” She also shares everything to do with me on her Facebook page which she has recently just launched, such a cutie! Do your family have a musical background? Not that I know of, Mum used to sing when she was young but never pursued it any further. The best I get is my mother singing at the top of her lungs to Def Leppard in the car, my father singing harmoniously to the Black Seeds while tapping his toe or my brother blasting something hideous from the 50s!
What did you do before music? Do you still work outside of music? Gymnastics and Competitive sport aerobics took up hours of my life before I started pursuing music full time. I am a qualified English (ESOL) teacher and I coach a fantastic bunch of gymnasts. Any behind the scene tips/secrets to share? When life sucks, use it to your advantage, and make art out of it! Have you had to deal with any negative press? I would be lying if I said no. There is always going to be an opinion, negative comment or a rumour about you. Those silly enough to believe it without really knowing you are obviously not worth knowing themselves. I am lucky that I have great & supportive friends and family during those times that might arise. Do you have any previous interviews/stories for public viewing? Yes, In the Wellington region newspapers & online. Do you currently have an agent? Not as yet, Any takers!? What is your up to date performance schedule so we can keep all your fans informed? I am doing a mini tour in Christchurch in February 2014. My plan for this year is to go on a NZL tour with FEMME and my usual gigs as well as try to record an album at the same time. Do you have any links to video and media coverage, Facebook, twitter etc. that people could check out? Find me on facebook & give my page a “like” http://www.facebook.com/SharvelleMusic There is a link to everything worth viewing on there. As well as your music you are the founder of FEMME and very well known for running events for the LGBT community. Can you tell us a little about that? FEMME is my baby. For me it’s about creating a safe & fun environment for all women where they can dance and socialize with
11 11
women much like themselves. I started running this event in Christchurch about 3 years ago and it is now running in Wellington too. We’ve had the demand to take it around NZL & Australia too which is the aim for 2014. FEMME involves live music, I often sing with a guest too, Burlesque shows, sport pole performances, contortion dancers, Kings, Body art, DJ music, Photographer, Give-aways & More. We have been lucky enough to have fantastic performers such as Venus Starr, Bonita Dangerdoll and Ruby Ruin be part of FEMME. We also run themed events. FEMME brings in a large number of women and it’s always a fantastic night! Do you find that New Zealand has become more accepting of LGBT people in the spotlight now? I know for myself sexual orientation isn’t something that makes an impact on who or what I like but I’d love to hear your views on this. Yes & no. I see no difference between LGBT people & the heterosexual community. We were all born human beings and we are all capable of love. God loves everyone no matter what. Those that are struggling to accept LGBT really need to understand that times have changed, God accepts that, and he
accepts everyone. We were all born the way we are and that’s just how it is. How is that a sin. Stop fighting I say. What kind of events do you generally run? Currently I run Cabaret shows with live music, burlesque, pole & contortion dance. I also run themed singles nights, LGBT events, Ladies nights & FEMME. Do you have any events coming up for our readers to look out for? Always! February - FEMME, LGBT, Christchurch tour, BGO, NZL Tour - Dates to be confirmed. Have you found that it is harder to run events in Christchurch since the earthquakes damaged so many venues? Not with FEMME or LGBT but definitely when it comes to getting live gigs.
Just for fun: Favourite song? Original - Bad Cover - Killing me softly, Glitter in the air, Scarlet, Warwick Avenue... Favourite food? FOOOOOOD! Favourite movie? Titanic Phobias? Spiders and failure Wetting myself when I’m old lol Celeb crush? Female: P!nk and Kate Winslet Male: Bradley Cooper Relationship status? That’s for me to know and you to find out ;) Any tattoos or piercings? Do ears count as piercings? I have the bottom of my arm decorated with a musical sleeve and both of my feet have tattoos on them. Left is New Zealand with my whanau in it & right is the quote “Where words fail, music speaks.” Best/worst pick-up lines you have had used on you? “I hope your voice is as beautiful as you are” (this being said whilst some creepy band guy is trying to feel me up) Ewww

If adrenaline, motorbikes and all things crazy float your boat, then the boys from StuntNZ are definitely right up your alley. Founded in 2010 by Nic ‘Kruzah’ Kroeze, StuntNZ has hit New Zealand by storm, with participation in such events as D1NZ, Hamilton 400, Nitro Circus and many more. Motorcycle stunt riding, sometimes referred to as simply stuntriding, is a motorcycle sport characterized by stunts involving acrobatic maneuvering of the motorcycle and sometimes the rider. Some of the stunts you will commonly see are the Spreader, High-chair, Crazy-Larry, stoppie, christ, switchback, Spec-K, Watch-tower, Raph-Louie
We caught up with Nic ‘Kruzah’ Kroeze and Alex ‘Hairy’ McCleary to ask them more about StuntNZ and stunt biking. So guys, how did the idea of StuntNZ come along? Nic – The idea came to me after I’d done a few stunt riding demos and shows and started getting more recognition. I really just wanted to stop marketing myself as a one man band and more as a company, with other riders and different aspects of the show. How long have you been riding/stunting for? Nic – I’ve been stunting for about six years, but riding street bikes since I first got my license back in 1999. My riding has really tapered off since my son was born. I really only get out twice a week if I’m lucky these days. When I started out I was out in the parking lot for up to a few hours every night, six to seven times a week. Alex – I’ve owned my bike for three years and I’ve probably ridden a total of three months. I definitely don’t have the dedication Nic does. Between work and other sports I only get out a couple of times a month and give winter a miss. What made you get into stunt riding? Nic – After owning street bikes for a few years and getting a few track days under my belt I had to find something to really challenge myself. Early on I spent hours and hours watching youtube videos and scanning the early stuntlife.com forums. I wanted to do something that very few people in the country were doing. There is still only a small handful of riders in New Zealand. Alex – I had seen stunting on videos and thought it looked awesome but I didn’t know anyone in NZ rode. After a serious crash I had to give up motocross then, fortunately, I met Nic and he pointed me in the right direction. What are your biggest motivators? Nic – When Alex almost gets a new trick. It sounds lame but nothing gets me more psyched up to try something new as watching someone else nail something they have been struggling with. Oh, and the kids. I love how hyped up they get over seeing stunt riding. Alex – Youtube videos of USA and European Pro-riders. They are so advanced in their skills. Nic – Also girls and getting told his wheelies are garbage.
37
Any role models/riders you look up to? Alex – The US riders are awesome. Jesse Toler, Sitdown Steve, Guru and Jason Pullen are probably my biggest stunt ride man crushes ha-ha. The Euro guys are killers too. Nic – See Alex’s answer. Also I had the chance to hang out with Nick Apex in Las Vegas a few years back. He is still one of my favourite riders and his Empire Freestyle team mates Ernie and Lin are killers too. In Europe, Javier Almazan Lopez, Romain Jeandrot and Rafal Pasierbek always pull new stuff out. They also have a super-hypo jumpy style. How do you come up with your stunts? Nic – It’s basically what people are doing overseas. Anything new usually gets put on youtube instantly and then it’s a matter of trying to work out how to do it. It’s a lot of trial and error. Alex – I prefer simple big tricks that get the crowd pumped up. If I see something on a video that’s a total banger of a trick then I’ll just try it and see how it goes. How long have you guys been riding together? Alex – About three years, I guess. Nic - …..On and off. When Alex doesn’t have better stuff to do. What sort of set up are your bikes and how are they different from street bikes? Nic – They’re essentially just street bikes with a bunch of useless stuff taken off and a bunch more useful stuff bolted on! I ride a Honda CBR600f4i and Alex is on a Kawasaki ZX6RR. We both run no lights or front fairings. They have cages to prevent damage, hand operated rear brakes and huge rear sprockets so we can control wheelies at slower speeds.
39
You both just finished a tour of the South Island. Was it a first for StuntNZ? Would you look at doing it again? Nic – Yeah, it was a first. Hopefully the first of many. It was a killer trip in so many ways. We’re looking at doing it again a few times in 2014. I might let Alex come with me once the bars South Island ladies have had a chance to recover. Alex – Hell yes! I’ll be coming back! What is the hardest part of being a stunt rider? Nic – The hangovers hahaha, nah. Finding the time to juggle work, family and riding. And the business side, I hate paper work and computers. Oh, and crashing hard!! Alex – The ground when you fall off! Explaining to people what stunt riding is and that I don’t work on movie sets. Most dangerous trick? Nic – The new one I’m going to learn next time I ride! I’ve broken a few collar bones with high speed burnouts and drifting so I’m going to say them. Alex – Probably switchbacks (sitting or standing on the gas tank facing backwards). There’s no nice way to fall off if it goes wrong. Have you had any strange or stalker like fans? How do you handle it? Nic – Yeah, a few. I usually just give them Alex’s number and let him deal with them. Alex – Hahaha, oh lord! We have had some interesting fans. I usually end up dating them. Nic – This is actually true.
41
Highs and Lows for 2013? Nic – Highs – def. the South Island Tour. Also the New Plymouth trip at the start of the year where I got to ride and party with the little frenchy Gui Mora from Christchurch before he flew back to France for good. Alex – Highs were starting my business and our tour of the South Island. What are you most proud of? Nic – The fact Alex has come out riding more in the last three months than he has in the previous three years. That I get the chance to travel around the country and get paid to do what I love. Also watching my son grow up with an intense passion for motorcycles. I can’t wait to see where that takes him. Nic and Alex would like to thank the sponsors of StuntNZ: Honda Hamilton Jetpilot Clothing Demon Energy Skinks Tattoo Lounge (who are responsible for all of Nic’s amazing tattoos) Red Star Signs No Limitz Photography Dr Trim - Auto and Marine Trimmers Without their constant support the boys wouldn’t be doing what they do.

Expression Expression is a new tattoo studio, recently opened in Christchurch’s revamped CBD. We caught up with Elias and team to get the scoop.
Tell us a bit about Expression and what prompted you to open in the cbd? Expression is a custom tattoo studio and art gallery in the heart of Christchurch city exhibiting a range of work by local artists who have a passion to create. As tattoo artists we strive to design custom workfor all of our clientele, transforming ideas into a visual interpretation of individual thought. I have always wanted to have a studio and run a business of my own, opening in the cbd was a chance to be a part of the Christchurch rebuild and provide a space for those participating in the creative process. New Regent street is like a historical oasis in a shaken concrete jungle and we see this to be an ideal place to grow as an artistic identity with the hope that others may also see and take the same opportunity to reform in our broken city. How many artists do you have working alongside you? I currently have two very inspirational artist working with me at Expression. Mike Slade and Morgan Mathews-Hale . We now have four stations upstairs in the tattoo studio. We will soon have Brad Giles working with us who is also a talented, professional artist with over twenty years experience in the tattoo industry. Four stations also allows us to accommodate to guest artists at Expression. It is a possibility we will expand our studio by having two stations downstairs and three upstairs with the gallery surrounding us as we work. How does it feel being back in the CBD working on a daily basis? Do you think it could affect potential clients coming in for work? You can’t live in fear of the unknown. It feels really good to be back working in the city. Im a firm believer in the power of positive thought and endless possibility. I feel as long as we do the best we can while progressing as artists, striving to build skill and develop technique our clients will follow us. New Regent street is a very historical place once deemed New Zealand’s most beautiful street. The buildings are designed in spanish missionary style architecture. The buildings are the same colours as when they were painted during the depression in 1932, this was to lively the spirits of the people. It truly is an alluring spectacle and we are very grateful to be working down such a unique area of town. Our clients really enjoy their time and experience at Expression. Now you also have an art gallery downstairs, is all the work by local artists? At this stage the work in the gallery is a collection of local artists with a diverse range of work on display. Artist’s include Bing Dawe, Dallas Matoe, Andrew Mcgregor, Gordon Tyro, Tyson Roberts , Morgan Mathews-Hale and Myself. We encourage local artists who like to exhibit and or sell their work to come in and check out the space. How did you all meet? A majority of the artists I know personally, some I have met during my study at C.P.I.T . The other artists have introduced themselves and their work to us by visiting Expression.
47
Elias My name is Elias John Tyro. I am an artist from Whakaraupo Lyttelton and I derive from Ngai Tahu Iwi. I have been passionate about creativity from an early age. My father is also an artist so it is safe to say I am artistically from the pockets of my dads genes. Straight out of high school I enrolled at C.P.I.T to study for a Certificate in Design, which was a year long course, followed by a three year Degree in Visual Arts. Art allows me to express myself and communicate with others. It is a way to reflect the symbols of my own significance and reach people with images that speak more than words. During my degree I became fascinated with the art of tattoo. I’ve always had a deep affection for moko, carving and various elements of my Maori heritage. I see tattoo as a strong devotion and symbolic application. I did a three year apprenticeship at Planet Tattoo where I worked during my weekends throughout my degree before moving to Epic Ink for almost two years. Inkgrave Tattoo, owned by Mark Sender, Mike Slade and Zach Hart, was a big inspiration to me as a tattoo artist. The quality of their work was always something to endeavour towards. I met Mark and Mike after the Earthquakes had taken both of the studios they had, so they were forced to work out of Planet Tattoo as a temporary means. We developed an immediate relationship and have been good friends since. I feel blessed to know and work with such inspiring artists and friends. What makes your style different to others? I like to do all styles of work. I think what may make my style different to others is my attention to detail and being a fussy bugger with quality of application. What’s your favourite piece you have personally? My favourite piece would have to be the ship on my arm by Mike Slade. Bulk Radical Most memorable experience you have had? The most memorable experience I have would be marrying my beautiful wife on the beach in Maui, Hawaii, we eloped. It was an overwhelming feeling and experience like no other.
49
Mike Mike Slade I’ve always drawn since I was a young buck and always wanted to have art as my career. I was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship at Black Rose tattoo under Willy. I finished my 5year apprenticeship in 2007, so I’ve been tattooing for 13years now. I then went onto opening my own shop with two good friends, Mark Sender & Zach Hart. It was called Ink Grave Tattoo. Sadly we lost both the stores in the quakes. After the quakes I was kindly invited to work at Planet Tattoo, where I first met Elias Tyro. From there I started working at Epic Ink and Jase (Mad Tatter) was a great support A lot of people have influenced me over the years who I’ve been privileged to work along side of. Mark Sender would have to be one of my biggest inspirations. What makes your style different to others? The style that I enjoy the most is oriental & bold lines & lots of colour. I am very particular with the quality of work I produce. What’s your favourite piece you have personally? My favourite piece I have is my right arm sleeve, a snake and a secretary bird in battle done by Mark Sender. Most memorable experience you have had? Most memorable experience would have to be opening 2 of my own shops.
51
Morgan Morgan Mathews-Hale I am a local Christchurch artist of Ngai Tahu, Tainui and Ngati Porou descent. Raised in Kaiapoi, I attended the local high school, and developed a keen interest in painting, photography and design. I then took that further and began study at Toihoukura School of Maori Visual Art & Design. More recently I am training as a tattoo/Taa Moko artist at Expression tattoo and gallery. What inspires you? I have many inspirations as an artist. I can’t narrow down to one as I have many in all different art forms. Most of my influence comes from digital fantasy art and artists, and Maori Carvers, Weavers and Moko artists. Tell us about your style. Many of my previous artworks are a mixture between realism and abstract ideas. The aim is to capture a moment or a season in my life, whilst giving the viewer the ability to identify with an emotion of their own. What’s your favourite piece? Favourite piece would be a pencil drawing I did of my son, as I thought he would be, before I met him. Most memorable experience you have had? My most memorable experience? I’ll never forget the big moments. Studying in Gisborne as a complete stranger to the place, motherhood.

BRAD
Brad (B.Rad) Giles I have been tattooing for 22 years. I am originally from Christchurch, but I have just returned after 15 years of living overseas and tattooing around the world. I also train Martial Arts full time, which is my other passion besides tattooing. Tell us about your influences. My biggest influences in tattooing are Guy Aitchison, Mike Davis, Aaron Cain, Dave Waugh and my good friend Jime Litwalk. They are the pioneers of New School tattooing, which is the style of work I am known for. They influence me with cutting edge techniques and push me to experiment with the style! What makes your style different to others? My style stands out because of my super clean foundations and bright and bold colours and style. I have developed my style for 22 years and I believe it is recognisable! I am also able to work in any style of tattooing and am also known for my realism and portrait work.
What’s your favourite piece you have personally? My favourite piece on me is my new left forearm piece. It’s a New School 3 eyed tiger with green flames, which is a cover up of a 20 year old tattoo. The cover was done by my friend, Rob Cee, from Valley Ink in Australia where I previously worked. Most memorable experience you have had? Most memorable experience.. there are so many! Probably working alongside some of my heroes at a tattoo convention in Anaheim, California. Being next to Dave Waugh and opposite Guy Aitchison and getting to hang out with them and pick their brains.

Miss Awareness 2013 Phrenics “Miss Awareness” 2013
Phrenics is an up-cycled clothing company that refashions clothing using vintage and recycled materials; they give 20% of their profits after tax to local Animal care and Mental Health Charities. Luke and Prinny are the brother and sister team that created Phrenics to “save the world, one dress at a time” with their ethically refashioned items. They have always been passionate about Mental Health Awareness and reducing stigma in their community. Due to having Mental Illness in their family and seeing how much it has affected the sufferer and family, they decided to do something to minimize the stigma. They discussed their ideas of running a “Miss Awareness” competition, where people of all shapes and sizes, colours of the rainbow and from all walks of life could share their stories online and go on to win a pamper photo shoot. They hoped that running this competition would assist in reducing stigma in their community and help people feel less alone when they realized how common MI is. Several local business who are also passionate about supporting their community volunteered their time and services to make the competition happen. They are; Sarah Wilkes Photography, Style Mystic, Vixn, Lola Fang, Lisa Jellev Make Up Artistry, Phillippa Haley MUA, Christie Golder MUA and the use of theTime2shine studio space. To choose the winner, the team felt uncomfortable judging whether or not one person’s experience should be rated higher than another’s, so they decided on the “name out of a hat” concept and used a random online name picker. Congratulations to Shelley McManis, Miss Awareness 2013! Read on to see all the lovely entrants and read their stories. Keep up to date with “Miss Awareness” and other comps at www.phrenics.co.nz

Shelley
Shelley McManis (Valentina Grimm) My name is Shelley and I have suffered from depression since I was a little girl. It’s been a really tough thing to deal with and still to this day something I have trouble dealing with. My mother has been by side for all of it; the tears, hospital trips and not wanting to leave the house. If it weren’t for her I wouldn’t be alive today and be the stronger woman I am now.
Sarah
Sarah Curry (White Rabbit) When I was 16 I was diagnosed as having social anxiety disorder, anger management issues, clinical depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. My little brother has bi-polar and ADHD, and my Mum has had depression most of my life. My partner has Asbergers syndrome which is a form of Autism. Mental health issues are a part of my everyday life and I find the most frustrating part is dealing with other people who don’t understand it. I know the comp asks us to say something we have done to help a friend or something they have done to help us, but I really just want to help spread awareness and knowledge of the daily struggles people with mental health issues go through.

Nic Crequer I was first diagnosed with Post Natal Depression 6 months after the birth of my daughter. Those first 6 months had been a complete blur to be honest. I spent most my days sitting at home crying, unable to do even the basics, and wondering what the hell was wrong with me. I felt nothing for my daughter at the time, and that made me feel so incredibly guilty. My world should have been revolving around her and it just wasn’t happening. Then when my daughter was due for a check up, my husband came along to the doctors with us & somehow together with the doctor they ganged up on me and it became a frank discussion of how I wasn’t coping, and that I needed some help. Together they got me to open up about my feelings, and I was prescribed medication which I still take to this day. With my husband’s amazing support and love I am now coping and love my daughter more than anything.
Emma
Emma Nock My onset and diagnosis of PMDD came about 2 years into our relationship. I changed, and so did our home life. It wasn’t pretty and to this day I still have lapses, however the loving support my husband has shown me has enabled me to accept my condition, accept treatment, and move forward in my life feeling like he really does have my back. It’s gotten me through some seriously dark days/weeks/months, no judgement. He’s a wee bit amazing! I’m so proud to be a part of this group of amazing women doing amazing things despite their challenges, and huge thanks to (the Miss Awareness team) for fighting the stigma, and donating her time and wares, you rock, Lady.

Laura
Laura Archbold I cant really stand here and mention one supporter or one friend. It would be really unfair to all that have supported me along the way. Struggling for almost 7 years I can gladly say I have more bright days than dark now. I have so many people to thank for getting me through the hardest stages. My GFs know who they are and so does my family and partner who have helped so much. One of the biggest thank yous would be my old tutors who saw I was struggling coming off the medication. I thought I was going crazy and I didn’t know what my mind or body were doing but he patted me on the back and said he knew what it was like, gave me a website to look at and said its normal and it gets easier. All the symptoms I couldn’t explain were all there and I wasn’t losing my mind. I haven’t forgotten it and he truly helped me through course and knowing he actually got what I was going through helped me in ways I think only us struggling know. So I stand here today thanking everyone that has helped. Even those that are unaware of it. Those that smile walking past you in the mall or street make the smallest difference too . Always a fighter.
Megan
Megan Phillips My name is Megan Phillips. This competition would mean a lot to me as my sister is battling depression and anorexia. She is just beautiful and hurts me to see her struggle with this illness.... I remind her all the time how beautiful she is and how she is an angel in this world. We spend lots of time together even when she is in hospital. Spending time with someone with a mental illness is the best thing you can do, it gives them a lot of strength to know people care about them. My sister is one of the most important people to me. I will always be there for her no matter how hard things get.
Rachael
Rachael Shaw I have suffered from mental illness since I was 13. I have never really had anyone there to support me and still don’t. My husband tries, but its hard to open up to people. The worse thing I find is doing things for myself. To win this would be wonderful as I am going through a drug change, as they stopped working and I just feel miserable. I have a guy I know who has just quit at work because he is going through the same thing as me. I have told him that I am here if he needs anything, even if its just “misery loves company”. The worse thing I find is people who insist on trying to talk to you about it, and making you try to talk about it. So I just make him know I’m there just for company, to watch dvds and chill, which is the only thing that can really help in these situations, as I know too well, but don’t have anyone to do that with and support me like that. I have a bad habit of pushing people away, and not making friends.
Kate
Kate Yetman I would like to thank my wonderful social worker who has supported me through the last year I have had severe depression and anxiety since the earthquakes. She has been there every step of the way, not only just doing her job but going further than she has to, coming when I need her, phoning me when I am struggling and being a really good friend. We talk about anything and she has helped me so much with the running of my home with 4 kids on my own. Life isn’t easy with these illnesses and I wouldn’t be still coping without her. She listens to me, supports me and even helps me bleach my hair before I do the pink cant ask for more than that, and her promise is that if CYFS ever turn up again she will be there in a flash.

Madeleine
Madeleine Thompson. Personally, I have just started to realise how many people in my life actually suffer from mental illness, however it has always been a part of who we are and how we were raised, My mother suffered from depression and although we have a close relationship, I never really knew how bad she was until much later in life, and this makes me sad. She made me want to understand and help the ones I love. My partner suffers from Bi-polar and lives everyday with this shadow underneath his light. I am so proud of who he is as a person and how much he had to endure to get to this apart of his cycle. On his ‘bad’ days, I remind him just how amazing he is and how much love and honour he brings to this world, his friends and family. If he can overcome his demons then he is stronger than a lot I’m afraid, a lot that didn’t have the love and support sadly. I think understanding is the main key to helping people we love, not just the ones with mental illness but EVERYONE...and acceptance of the things that come our way.
Timara
Timara Johnson Hi, My name is Timara Johnson. I have suffered from depression for a long time. Last year with the help and support of my friends and family I finally accepted what has been happening and got help. Its been a tough road, but having my family and friends there just to say that they love and support me is what has gotten me through. The best advice I could give to someone who has a friend suffering is to try and be understanding and let them talk if they want to.
Melissa
Melissa Moss Hi There. I’m Melissa. I was diagnosed with manic depression when I was about 19. I’d been self harming years before that though. I’ve got bad scaring on my left arm. The worst time was when I needed 25 stitches . A lot of people don’t even know I’ve done this in my past because I’ve hidden it so well. It’s just the past few months I haven’t covered my arm when I’ve been in public. It’s who I was not who I am ! My great friend Samara helped me through hard times more than she will ever know. I love her so much !! She was the only one who didn’t give a lecture but let me talk and understood me and I’m forever grateful.
Justine
Justine Balcar My sister has always been really supportive of me in my anxiety and depression journey. From taking me out for coffee and chats when I look a bit overdone, to driving up when she lived in Dunedin to help me care for my then new-born and toddler. My new-born had reflux and I didn’t realise that she was getting up in the night, 3 to 4 times a night, to calm her so I could get more sleep. She is such a gem!

Behind the scenes with.....
Von Voin Strum
Revalts and Vicyrein Photography were extremely privileged to be invited behind the scenes of Von Voin Strum’s new music video, Take Me Home, directed by Marc Swadel with assistance from Prologue.co.nz. You wouldn’t believe how long it takes to film a music video or the insane amount of work everyone does. It’s certainly worth it though. Check out the finished video here:

The Bram Stoker International Film Festival Vampire Ball. Sarah Van Wyk
Coming out of New Castle Airport, for me it was a Jane Austen-esque view of fields lined with sheep and cows. On entering Whitby I stepped on a dead bird like some sort of omen, being surrounded by mist and fog a plenty. The cobblestone streets , the air and creep of Whitby could not be more suited for the Bram Stoker Film Festival Vampire Ball. The stage assistants of Bram Stoker were a delight to work with, nothing would have been possible for me without their assistance. The outfits worn by the audience were an assortment of goth, full Victorian regalia and abundant vampiric overtones.
The event boasted a full bar and a life sized, or shall I say, dead sized, coffin to take photos in, around or about. One fantastical element that was revealed to the ball patrons was that the giant chandelier, a gorgeous, dripping, sparkling vision of the finest ballrooms of eras past, contained a hidden secret: a large crucifix clung to the ceiling, surrounding this massive chandelier, truly adding the perfect elegance and expression of a vampiric spell. I opened the ball with one of my originals. Immensely spooky, even by my standards, music started before me and I sang into the pitch black ballroom until the spotlight revealed me, matching my gothglampiress tulle and sequins to the voice that filled the entire space. Mister Joe Black was compere, of whom I had the immense honor of being his dressing room-mate aka partner in dark crime. Thankfully we knew each other prior, due to the magic of internet land. Few can compare to his showmanship and command of the stage. The bands Altered, Scandacross and The Victorians were the other 3 headliners with me that night. The Victorians were a precious slight distant cousin, genre wise, to the band Nightwish. The audience was warm, welcoming and receptive. They seemed to move with the music when I did and loved laughing right along with all of us performers. DJ Ghost played until the wee hours to the charismatic dancers who let lose their pre-Halloween movements. I cannot say that you have ever fully experienced Halloween until you spend a weekend in Whitby England, where the novel Dracula was written, and sliding your top hat on, join the Bram Stoker International Film Festival Vampire Ball. 115
