Miss Cherr
y Martini
Australian LowBrow Artist
We are privileged to bring you one of our fav artists Miss Cherry Martini! Tell us a little bit about yourself: What got you interested in art? Have you taken any art classes? I have always been interested in Art since a child, always seeing the beauty in things. Took every art class through school and started a tattooing apprenticeship at 16. Saving my pennies, I moved to Australia when I was 19 and did a diploma in Arts/Illustration and haven’t looked back! What is your preferred medium and why? These days it is Digital, Programs such as SAI and Photoshop.
Company. I’m a total nerd and love Comic Con conventions and used to sell my artwork at all the different shows. Most of my fun stories involve a lot of alcohol, loud music and my artist friends not getting any sleep and leaving art work to the last minute before a big gallery opening lol Where can we reach you if we are interested in commissioning you for our own projects? I have many places: Facebook: www.facebook.com/misscherrymartinifanpage
Do you have an online portfolio or a blog where we can view your work? I sure do: http://misscherrymartini.daportfolio.com/
DeviantArt: http://miss-cherry-martini.deviantart.com/ Email: misscherrymartini@hotmail.com
Do you have a favourite artist? If yes, what draws you to that person’s work? Yes, Simon Morse was my Inspiration growing up and I have pretty much followed in his foot steps! His work pretty much speaks for itself, its beautiful and naughty at the same time! Can you remember one of the first things you created? What makes it memorable? The first image I EVER painted was of a Tattooed girl which I named her Miss Cherry Martini.... Now I have become her lol Where do you gather most of the inspiration for your works? Everywhere and anywhere really! All things beautiful and unique.
TrashDolls: http://www.trashdolls.com/members/MissCherry-Martini/ What, in your opinion, is the hardest step in creating a masterpiece? Getting motivated lol What role does the artist have in society? Creating eye candy. Everything you look at has artwork, from packaging, TV, video games, CD covers, right down to the design of the things you wear and house you live in. With out art and design to evolve the human world... Well the world would be paradise lol
Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and discovered a whole new genre of art? How did it turn out? I got into Painting on toys! I did a tattooed Kewpie Doll and put him into a antique dome piece with roses all around him, he’s been sold to a new home now and I miss him lol. Do you have any other interesting hobbies or maybe a fun story about an experience involving your artwork? I collect toys and used to work for Moose Toy

What’s your background? I was born in Australia, raised in New Zealand. I’m half Kiwi, Half Indian with a pinch of French and Anglo Burmese. I am a mum to a wonderful lil boy called Phoenix and am engaged to a Petrol Head! We all live in a house that resembles the Addams Family with nothing but antiques and odd things. Along with 2 dogs, a Rat, a mouse, A parrot, fish, koi, finches, shrimp, wow I could go on forever! What work do you most enjoying doing? Girls, sexy girls with boobs and tattoos lol What’s your favourite art work? Right now, I love my Nerds love Cats piece! What jobs have you done other than being an artist? I was a Body Piercer, I taught English to Taiwanese Students and worked at The Body Shop. I also do Modelling and Catwalk shows. What memorable responses have you had to your work? I’ve had people cry! Been sent gifts, but my fav would be a darling little girl in a wheel chair wearing one of my tees and her wanting me to sign it! Hugs! Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it? Not at all!!!! Its a noisy, no rules environment and its harder to tame us and strap us to the chair! Lol What do you dislike about the art world? Other artists that undercut the market! And people who steal artwork and claim it as there own. What is your dream project? A children’s Book. More clothing labels... Mainly, renovating my house! And never moving again! What are you working on at the moment? Right now I’m design stuff For Sourpuss Clothing and other lil secret jobs! What are you doing when you’re not creating? What hobbies do you have? Console Gaming, Movies, drinking, reading comics, hanging with family and friends, going out to the pub, shopping.... Collecting nerdy memorabilia! My latest find, a Greedo Head! What would people be surprised to learn about you? I’m vegetarian, and don’t drive! And that I’m half Indian.

My name is bek, I am 22. I recently moved back to chch from Perth after living there for 16 long warm years with my mum and little brother, I moved back to chch to spend some more time with my family and experience NZ as I was only 5 when I first moved to perth. I work in the accounting industry and have done so for 5 years now. I am a party girl and tend to be the life of the party, I’m out there and some may say even a little bit crazy, I drink a lot I smile a lot and I laugh a lot. I have a great life and for that I’m grateful without my family and friends I wouldn’t be who or where I am today. I am a firm believer in working hard for what you want in life which is what I do. I have a lot of tattoos which all tell a story and represent a time in my life, I hope in the future to be a role model for other girls to show that no matter how different, no matter what age, what size and what you look like you too can accomplish your life goals.

Christchurch based rock band GHOST DADDY have just released their first song and music video JailBait Kate. REVALTZ catch up with front man PeepingAndre and guitarist Amy Renholder to talk about the song, the film it was written for, and the controversial stir the video has created.
“I was just born to be a creep” - PeepingAndre
So, first off tell me how the song Jailbait Kate came about? I’ve been following Ghost Daddy for a while now and it’s not a song I’d heard you play before. Amy: Jailbait Kate was never really planned. We got an offer from New Zealand director, Patrick Gillies, to write a song and make a video that’s going in the movie he’s making, Enter/man. Andre: I never, ever pictured it being our first release, we’re definitely more rock ‘n’ roll. That’s so exciting! It’s not every day NZ bands are approached to write for a movie sound track! Was it challenging writing a song for a specific purpose? Amy: We didn’t have a hell of a lot of time to get ready for it. I think from the moment Patrick got in touch with our manager to the point of the song being written, learnt and then the video filmed, was all in a space of like 5 or 6 weeks. We had to find a way to incorporate this sort of sound track release into the greater theme of what we’re doing as well. So you know, our next video, which will be our first official single, will reflect that in some way. I figured if we had to portray a particular story then let’s tie it in with where we’re going within our own story line. But you’ll have to watch the next video to see how that works.
Andre: Recording for a movie was hard given the fact I was told what to write about. I had a big block. Normally I don’t know what I’m going to write until the first line is out. I didn’t have anything up until the day of recording. Literally the night before recording I bought a bottle of whiskey and told everyone to leave me alone. It got to like 4 or 5am and I was furious. Everything flowed so perfectly. I got to the studio 5 hours later and I was like a fucking zombie. I went psycho, I’d had no sleep and a litre of whiskey. Patrick Gillies, the director of Enter/Man and the Jailbait Kate music video has had some pretty notable achievements, including winning awards at the Montreal World Film Festival, how was it working with him? . Andre: It was good. The fact that he was making this movie in particular, and filming and directing our video, him asking me to make it seem like I was a creep was almost natural to me. I was just born to be a creep. 25
I really enjoyed the Jailbait Kate music video but there has been a bit of a controversy surrounding it. You’ve been accused of glorifying male on female violence, is that something you support? Andre: No, of course not. But that’s good, when’s the last time you’ve seen that? When’s the last time people actually thought about what they’re calling entertainment? The dark elements are what make us. We’ve always been dark. I don’t regret doing any of it. Amy: And it was called for in the context of the film. The entire purpose of the video is to expose the sort of social contradiction that is, a glorified serial killer. As long as people have an opinion, in my opinion, that’s the only thing that matters. At least we’re making people think. Ya know? We’re a fantasy horror band. We play characters in an entirely fictitious cartoon world. Andre: We can’t take criticism to heart and change what we do just because some people don’t understand it or are
offended by it. (Andre pauses for a moment thinking) I find it intriguing the paradox of a celebrity serial killer. How many serial killers have you seen go up in flames publicly? Amy: They become celebrities. Andre: They become celebrities as soon as they get convicted. As soon as someone kills a bunch of people, as soon as they’re arrested, they get proposals from females, worshipped by young males, they’re worshipped by anyone, just because they’re a serial killer. Amy: It’s a social phenomenon. Most serial killers are societies biggest losers but as soon as they’ve actually killed someone, they get on the news and are given this level of celebrity. And it’s the media who gives that to them. There’s this symbiotic relationship between the two. Yeah, I definitely agree with that. You guys have just begun recording your first album too, how’s that going? Amy: It’s a fantastic experience. We’re recording at Quicksand Studios with Thom O’Connor. Andre: It’s a beautiful environment, the studio is perfect and Thom is brilliant. I could hang myself in that vocal booth and he won’t stop until he has a good take, ya know? Amy: It’s coming together really well and everyone is doing a great job on it. Cool, is there anything else in the near future for Ghost Daddy? Amy: Yeah well we’ve already started pre-production for our next video which is exciting, we’re hoping to release that Photography by Sharp Focus Photograpy
early October. Andre: We have a couple of shows coming up too. Dig it! You guys are a five piece, who isn’t here today? Amy: Our keyboardist Jordyn Morahan, our drummer Ash Stirling and Mykel Cole our bassist. You can catch Ghost Daddy live: September 14th - Churchills, Christchurch Like Ghost Daddy on Facebook: www.facebook.com/themechanicalgod Follow them online at: www.ghost-daddy.com Check out Jailbait Kate: www.youtube.com/ghostdaddyvideo

Venus Starr Hugo V

How did you first become involved with performing? I was born a little performer its, in my blood. I was honestly making and recording my own film clips in the lounge from the age of 6, I just followed my heart. I also danced with a small dance company and we had regular concerts. My mother is a fashion designer and I was involved in the RAQ fashion awards from a very young age, catwalk modelling for her label in the children’s section. In the early years of high school I used to choreograph & model for shows with my mothers designs. It was not until later when I left home I got involved with circus performing. Where did your name, Venus Starr, come from? There was a beautiful chocolate skinned girl in my social circles when I was growing up. She was so beautiful and so cool, all the boys loved her! Her name was Venus. I never forgot her. So as I was choosing my stage name years ago my boyfriend at the time said ‘what about Venus’. She came to mind and how much I adored her, I didn’t even give it a second thought! So Venus it was. Venus also being the goddess of love, I thought was very pretty. For my last name I wanted something somewhat classic & silver screen. A lot of old school burlesque stars had “starr” with two r’s as their last name. I thought that was quiet fabulous so I went with that. Venus Starr had a nice ring to it. Can you describe what you do for those who have never seen you perform? I am an entertainer. Somewhat Neo burlesque, my performances incorporate aerials, dance, character, a variety of circus skills, elaborate costumes & props. Some of my acts include implied nudity on stage through the art of tease. My performances are never full nude. My signature act’s are modern, a little bit rock n roll and in no way “traditional” . Definitely not like what you would expect to see from your classic burlesque dancer that society likes to compare to Dita Von Teese. I consider myself more of a Circus Showgirl as there is so much more vocabulary to what I do. To name a few things I do - Tattoo Model, Showgirl, Hoola Hoop, Aerial Silk, Swinging Trapeze, Character, Dance, Pole, Fans, Choreograph, Teach, Direct & Produce my own Cabaret Carousel which, incidentally, has become the number 1 burlesque Cabaret in the country. Where did you learn your moves? Have you had dance training? I have trained since I was 5 years old. Dance, Classical, Cat walk, Jazz, Gymnastics, Drama and so on. I started circus later in life. I trained at circus school and have a diploma in circus. Circus for me was a more outlandish, fun & expressionistic outlet for me. It was less disciplined and boring as some other art forms in which I had trained. My trainers were Russians Svetlana and Stanislav, a husband and wife team. Stanislav taught me aerials and his wife taught me hoola hoop. Where do you get your inspiration? I am a creative person at heart! Creativity runs in my family, I take inspiration from all around me. To be specific, there is too much inspiration to list. I am inspired greatly by pop stars of the 80s. I grew up around a lot of music. My father used to own a record store and had a huge collection of vinyl, CDs and music DVDs. He was always playing awesome music, showing me different film clips and
live concert DVDs that inspired me. I used to watch them over and over. Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna. I loved watching the huge productions, the dancers and choreography. It was very inspiring. What has been the biggest challenge for you? Body issues. I am a professional athlete. I was trained by Russians & you need to be very disciplined. Having danced my entire life I have always been conscious about being light and agile. I am really hard on myself and what I eat. I can’t remember the last time I ate fast food. As my career has progressed with modelling I am constantly in the public eye so I tend to be even harder on myself. Hmm, what else? Oh yes. Haters! They are like a fucking rash! On the plus side, haters do tend to drive me. I thrive on success and that kills them ;) When did you discover your love of performing? Born performer When did you first perform 6 years old to ‘The Final Countdown’ in a hot pink leotard and jazz slippers. What song/routine did you perform that first time? The first time I ever went solo in a big production I would have been about 17. I performed to ‘Army Of Me’ by Bjork.
How has your act evolved over time? Like wine it gets better with age! I wish I was busting out the stuff I do now back then.

What has been your biggest break or greatest opportunity to date? Head lining WOW wearable arts in NZ! I played Barbarella out of a spaceship lined with pink fur and wrestled a giant octopus monster 7m in the air! The audiences were 150,000 over the 2 week season, with 13 shows back to back.
Any behind the scene tips/secrets to share? Tell yourself to go slow and enjoy your time onstage. A lot of performers starting out get on stage and come off saying ‘what just happened’. They never take the time to soak it all in and enjoy where the hard work has got them. At the same time don’t milk it ;)
Also multiple tattoo magazine covers in the USA and world wide. I’m now being flown around the globe on a regular basis to perform at various events and tattoo conventions.
What’s your favourite type of music? Favourite band? I like a large variety. I am a pop queen at heart but love rock and a slice of metal.
What has been your wildest experience since starting out as a performer? I may have a warrant out for my arrest, so lets leave it at that!
Do you currently have an agent? I work for many different companies and myself but no agent as such
If you could perform with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Lady GaGa! I would love to do aerials for one of her huge productions. Or maybe Madonna. How do you relax when you’re not performing or working? Watching the crime channel, Chillin’ with my chihuahuas, drinking Miso soup and hangin’ with my son Floyd. Have you ever had any strange or stalker type fans? How do you handle this? How does it affect your relationship with your fans and supporters? Many! My block list on Facebook is insane, like 300 or something! One guy thinks I was his mother in a past life and says he will love me eternally apparently. This shit is crazy! You have no idea! What has been the hardest part of being involved in this industry? Constantly having to re invent myself. Coming up with new things. People get bored easily and I don’t want my fans getting bored. I like to keep it fresh. Have you been involved in any benefit performances? What was it and how did you become involved? I have raised money for a lot of different causes through the burlesque cabaret I run called Carousel Cabaret. We have raised money for the earthquake appeal, violence against women and for our friend Eva Strangelove, another burlesque performer in our scene. She was very ill, to the point where it was life threatening.
When did you get your first tattoo and what was it? I got my star sign on my hip. I went with my girlfriends, all in our private school uniforms. It is now covered with a star. Which is your favourite piece and why? Catwoman and that needs no explanation! How many tattoos and piercings do you currently have? I lost count, many many hours of work. I have 2 sleeves, a stomach piece, lower abs, back, leg, calf and neck. Do you have plans for more? Of course and I’m not telling what they are :) Who is your favourite tattoo artist? Simon Morse & Erin Chance Have you ever experienced discrimination due to your tattoos/piercings? Yes always. I choose to ignore it unless I am having a really bad day. Is there anyone special that you would like to thank for helping make your dream come true? My girlfriends! I would have lost my mind without them. Thank you for not letting me fall x
Where is the furthest from home you have performed? USA & Canada I am actually sitting at LAX airport LA waiting to board a flight back to Australia as I answer these questions, lol. If you had the opportunity to change something about the industry what would it be? Costumes would be cheaper. Ha! Have you had to deal with any negative press? Sometimes there have been bad reviews from productions I have been a part of, but for the most part no, not really. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Do you have any goals that you are aiming for? Producing a lot more shows and a lot more travel. What did you do before becoming a performer?
Victor Rodriguez
I’ve always been a performer, but back when I was also working a 9 to 5 I was managing a clothing store.
37
Just for fun: Favourite song? Lana del Rey - Ride Favourite food? Japanese Favourite movie? The Bodyguard, Pretty Woman or Natural Born Killers. That’s a hard question! Phobias? Snakes Celeb crush? Chris Cornell Best and worst pick-up lines you have used or had used on you? Pass - too many to remember and they were all fucking terrible! I don’t think a good pick up line exists! If u got it u got it and you don’t need to say anything.

K I M B E R L E Y P U R T O N
Please introduce yourself and tell our readers a little about you! I’m Miss Kimberley, I’m 23 years old and I’m a Tattoo Artist and Model. I’m based at Epic Ink NZ in Christchurch. How did you first become involved with modelling and tattooing? I’ve always drawn and painted, ever since I was a kid. It’s always been my passion. After I finished high school I began a Fine Arts degree at Auckland University. It really wasn’t my thing.... So I guess I’m an art school dropout! After that I completed a Diploma in Painting and decided to approach my local tattoo shop about work experience. One thing led to another and I started an apprenticeship. As for the modelling, that’s a relatively new thing for me. I never pursued it, just decided to take up what was being offered to me. It all looked pretty fun. It basically all started with Living Dolls and took off from there! I’m now signed with Famous Inked Models. Who is your biggest inspiration? I don’t have one specific person who I would call my inspiration - in my eyes any woman who is successful in her chosen field is an inspiration. What makes your tattooing style different to others? That’s a hard one. Its not easy to look at your own work in that way. I guess there’s always an element of femininity in my work. I’d hope that people see the effort and attention to detail.
What has been the biggest challenge for you? Taking risks - stepping out of my comfort zone is the hardest thing and I feel like this happens on a regular basis in this job. There’s always a style or image or skill that tests your abilities and you have to just suck it up and do it. How did you come to work at Epic Ink? I worked at several small tattoo shops before I started at Epic, trying to get my name out there. I started at Epic over a year ago, they had a position going and I applied - the rest is history! How has your style evolved over time? I think it’s evolved massively! You have to start at the bottom, with the basics, and work your way up to achieve progress, and I feel like that’s an ongoing process. Every tattoo you do you get better. Have you entered any contests to enhance your career? If so, describe your experience and what you gained from entering. Would you enter a contest again? No I haven’t actually entered any. I’m not big on competitions, I’m an ambitious person but not a competitive person so I feel I wouldn’t gain much from it. Recognition from fellow artists and clients seems more valuable to me than a contest. What has been your biggest break or greatest opportunity to date? I feel I’ve had a few - but there’s a few coming up, stay tuned!
47
How do you handle advising a clean skin against a bad tattoo choice? I tell them it’s a stupid idea. No point in pretending it’s good! I don’t want my client’s walking around with bad art. What are your thoughts on matching tattoos for partners? It’s a little silly, but I’m not the fun police. Whatever makes you happy! If you could model with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Marilyn Monroe - I’ve idolized her since I was a little girl! If you could tattoo anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Marilyn! Marilyn everything! Do you think the main-streaming of tattoos is a good or bad thing? Why? I think it’s both good and bad. The main-streaming of tattoos has helped in changing people’s views - tattoos are now seen as an art-form. It has also had a hand in changing some of society’s views on tattooed people which is always good. On the other hand, it’s now seen as fashionable which leads to thoughtless tattoos and celebrity trends. Any old scratcher thinks he’s a tattooist now, thanks to youtube tutorials and cheap machines, which has a negative effect on the industry. Have you had any negative experiences with clean skin folk with regards to your body modifications? Yes. I get stared at a lot. I get the most negative response from middle aged people - they just don’t get it. I’ve had the typical ‘You ruined the way you look by getting tattoos’ and ‘Tattoos make you look cheap and trashy’ and the big one - ‘What are you going to look like when you’re old?’ Honestly I really don’t care, old people with tattoos are dope! Do you follow the old school rules about tattooing – like saying no to a hand or neck piece as first ink if they are clean skin? I say no to 18 year old girls who come to me wanting their face/neck/hands tattooed and they have no other visible tattoos. I think that’s something you need to think long and hard about, and know you’re secure in your career, before you do. What was your first tattoo experience? My best friend Sonya and I went to my local tattoo shop at 18 and got our first tattoos - they were small and nothing special but it was the beginning! Mine was a Shakespeare quote on my shoulder blade. I still have it! I still like the quote, but it’s taking up prime real estate so it will most likely get covered! Do you think free hand drawing skills are still essential to be a good tattoo artist or has technology such as Photoshop made it otherwise? I think a good knowledge of art and great drawing abilities make up the basic skill set of a good tattoo artist. A lot of the skills required in drawing translate into tattooing. I use both drawing and Photoshop in my tattooing - I’m a big fan of both. What is the oddest tattoo request you have ever had? Too many to say! Tattooing “Your Name” on this guy’s butt was pretty weird haha. There’s always one odd request every few weeks.
49
What do you like to do when you are away from the tattoo machine? I’m not often away from it! If I am I’m usually drawing or planning tattoos. I’m a homebody, I like being with friends and family. What do you think of the current craze of tattoo shows on TV? I’m not a fan. I don’t watch any anymore. I have watched the old LA Ink etc. but I just find they’re all scripted and fake, not my thing. What did you do before becoming a tattoo artist? I started tattooing at 20, before that I was studying and working super lame retail jobs. Do you go to tattoo expos? I do. I go to the New Zealand ones (Hamilton, New Plymouth) and tattoo there also, will be going there again this year. I’m also hoping to go to a few Australian conventions this year and next year too. What are people most likely to request you personally to tattoo? Pretty ladies and portraits. What was it like to give your first tattoo to a paying client? Scary! So much pressure, and you’re so anxious at first. But everything worked out well in the end, you can only get better!
Are there any parts of the body you refuse or dislike to tattoo? Why? Private parts! No reason needed. And I hate butts!! Too squishy. Who would you most like to work with and why? Too many to say them all! All overseas artists. Once I start travelling I hope to work with some of the best in the industry. Can you describe your favourite type of client? The ones who let me tattoo whatever I want to! And sit still. Have you ever had a nightmare client? How were they a nightmare? Many! The ones who can’t sit still, at all. Makes everything extremely hard. And the super super fussy ones - they want everything a certain way, won’t listen to you even if it will look bad. The funny thing is it’s always the people getting tiny simple tattoos who get ridiculously fussy. I don’t get it! What has been the hardest part of being involved in this industry for you? Proving myself. People didn’t take me seriously for a long time, in a way it makes you want it more and try harder, work harder so they’ll notice you’re actually good at what you do.
51
How many tattoos and piercings do you currently have? I have both sleeves, hand, fingers, front and back of thighs, chest, full neck, face....I’ve probably forgotten some haha. I don’t have many piercings, only ears and belly button. Do you have plans for more? Always going to get more tattoos! It’s never ending! Who is your favourite tattoo artist? There’s many. Nikko Hurtado is always mind blowing. Teneile Napoli would have to be my favourite in black and grey tattooing. There’s just so many great artists around. What do family and friends think of your job? Do they support you? Friends are cool with it. Family was a little bit different! They aren’t the biggest fans but they support me in their own way. It’s taken a while to convince them that it’s an art form and a proper job, but they’re getting there! Do your family have tattoos? No they don’t! I tattooed my Aunty once, a little one on her foot but she’s the only one other than me with a tattoo. What is your favourite style of tattoo? Black and grey realism! I love it and I love tattooing it. What’s it like being the only female tattoo artist at Epic Ink? Is it a plus or a bonus? It’s good because people remember who I am. But
working with 6 men is definitely interesting! The stories I hear! Haha Do you have any links to media coverage, facebook, twitter etc. that people could check out your work on? Facebook.com/MissKimberleyTattoos IG: @misskimberley_tattoos Is there anyone special that you would like to thank for helping make your dream come true? Pretty much everyone who took a chance on me, let me tattoo them, helped me improve and believed in what I wanted to do! And of course a big thank you to all the clients that I have now - for letting me try new things and tattoo things I love, thank you for helping me continue to progress and do what I love for a living. Favourite song? Anything by Nirvana or Guns n Roses Favourite food? Thai! Favourite movie? I love Johnny Depp...All of his movies! Phobias? Injections. Ironic, I know haha. Celeb crush? Johnny Depp.

K A Z U M I Soroka Photography
Please introduce yourself and tell our readers a little about you! I’m not from this world, I’m from a much darker place - but everyone’s gonna know my name on this planet. I’ll never be figured out and I’ll never live a life that’s not mine. I’m making something out of my own nothing. I’m That Filthy Fly Girl. My life is and forever will be a beautiful mess Walk with me, I’m Kazumi - I got you, we’ll get through it. How did you first become involved with modelling and hosting? I’ve always been involved in the performing industry. Due to health reasons I had to put certain acts on hold - killed me. I was gutted and needed to get back on that stage or back in the game in some form. I love to talk shit and interact with an audience so hosting is wicked! I love modeling. Anything to do with a stage, camera or microphone and I’m at home. I love getting in front of that camera and making magic! Where did your stage name, Kazumi, come from? Kazumi was my favourite player on DOA when I was younger. She was kick ass with brilliant jugs haha. Plus, it just clicked - I am Kazumi. Where do you get your inspiration? Eminem - No words. He’s my boy. Alysha Nett - Her work is wicked. She’s just ‘her’ and I respect that. Otherwise, as weird as it may sound now (before I’ve revealed a bit about Kaz) I get it from myself. I encourage others to find inspiration in themselves also, everyone is in one way or another. What has been the biggest challenge for you? Dealing with myself - as I always say ‘You are your worst enemy’. Overcoming my fear and revealing myself and all that comes with it, but knowing I will help people along the way drives me to continue. When did you discover your love of being in the spotlight? Before my mother conceived me haha. - I told you, I’m not from this world ;) How has your style evolved over time? DRAMATICALLY. Don’t get manipulated or sucked in to anyone’s style etc. Follow your intuition and do what you feel is right at the time. Do what makes you happy and what makes you feel good. Have you entered any contests to enhance your career? I haven’t entered any contests. I’ve hosted them and I think I prefer it that way or to be involved in an actual show. Contests aren’t my thing, I’m too competitive haha. Tell us about your most embarrassing moment on stage or in front of the camera, if you care to share it! I don’t really get embarrassed? I’m usually the one to make stupid/funny shit happen to myself for a laugh hah. Ask any photographer who’s shot with me - they have some hilarious photos haha. What has been your wildest experience since starting out? The reaction and response I’ve had from my followers and fans. It’s still wild. It will never stop being wild. The fact that I’m anyone’s light in someone’s life is just rad. Some of the messages I receive are rather wild too haha. If you could model with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? He’s not a model but I’d make him - Eminem, duh! I go all fangirl over his ass.
89
Do you have a favourite photographer you have worked with? What made the experience stand out? Soroka Photography. He was my partner for 3-4 years and we are still the best of friends. I have a lot of baggage and we have a lot of history. The fact he plays apart in my dream let alone still my life is so beautiful to me and continues to stand out. We work really well together. Is there anyone you aspire to work with in the future? Lady Live. She’s so gnarly! I gotta get my ass over to the states. Any tips or advice for aspiring models? Anything they need to watch out for? Keep your wits about you. Don’t talk shit and learn that it’s okay to say ‘no’ and stand your ground. What has been the hardest part of being involved in this industry? The ‘pressure’ and ‘competition’ I keep finding myself near. I hate it. I’m in competition with no one. I do what I do because I love it. Not to outshine or put down others. I hate drama. How do you relax when you’re not working? Sing - I find it so relaxing and natural. If I can’t I’ll listen to music, read a book and cuddle my dog Max. Have you had to deal with any negative press? Haha, not yet. But I’m sure I will. What did you do before becoming a model/host? As mentioned before I have always been in the performing industry. Before modelling and hosting I was a dancer and singer/musician. Due to health reasons I had to put both on a hold. (I’m slowly getting back into it at my own pace). Any behind the scene tips/secrets to share? Have fun. Be nice and enjoy yourself. It’s your life man, you can do anything and no one can take that from you. What’s your favourite type of music? Favourite band? I like most styles and genres of music. Put a sing a long on and I will own that shit though. Pitch Perfect soundtrack is currently my jam, haha. Do you have anything exciting coming up we should keep an eye out for? Oh yeah. I’m revealing the first part of ‘Kazumi - The girl who will never be figured out’ within the next couple of days. Scary shit.

I don’t plan. If it happens it happens. I’ll get what I want when I want.

Who is your favourite tattoo artist? Carbine at Tattoo Extreme, Queanbeyan NSW, Australia. Have you ever experienced discrimination due to your tattoos/piercings etc.? If so please explain LOL. Yes. I could sit here for hours and tell you all the horrid things. You learn to grow a tough skin, if you can’t then well shit - society’s a judgemental motherfucker. I like to smile and be a smart ass, they’re reaction always makes me laugh. Do you have any links to video and media coverage, Facebook, twitter etc. that people could check out? https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Kazumi/512460352112303 https://twitter.com/thatskazumi http://thatskazumi.tumblr.com/ http://www.modelmayhem.com/2742851 Instagram: @thatskazumi Is there anyone special that you would like to thank for helping make your dream come true? Kazumi Revealed: Part 1
97
First, I’d like to thank my mum for helping me write and put this together. I can’t imagine how hard it would have been for her, but she knows why I am doing this and just as I do, she hopes it will help myself and many others. It’s taken me weeks to sit down and actually write. I haven’t known what to say, where to start, how much to say and of course, how to put it all into fucking words, but I had to. In my heart I had to get this done or at least started before I start the next chapter of my road to recovery. As of August (next week) I will be admitted to a Private Psychiatric Hospital in Sydney for at least 3 months depending on how I go/react to treatment. We all know Kazumi - That Filthy Fly Girl, a Published Model and Events Host making her dream, her reality and destroying anything in her path. To some she is an inspiration, to others a freak - but she doesn’t give a fuck. She will live a life that she knows and has learnt is hers. She is a survivor of many wars, just as many others; she is just sharing it with the world, showing you the beauty in the mess. The mess that no one wants to show. She is the voice for the silent sufferers, a light for the lost souls, but all in all Kazumi is a strong, driven, gnarly motherfucker who is going to help, love, listen and share. As always said - she will never be figured out. She’s not from this world and she’ll show you that every long journey starts with a once upon a time. Walk with her, she’s making her own light and she’ll shine for you too, she’s got you. I would like to introduce Jessica. Yes I know by doing this, in response I am going to get some harsh, nasty feedback and remarks, but I know there will be one boy or girl, sitting in bed listening to music, not wanting to exist in this cruel world anymore, who will read my story, see my story and find strength to make it through another second, another day. If all the hate, disaster and pain struck in my world all at once, it wouldn’t matter now knowing I had helped someone who has felt or is feeling/ experiencing anything I have and or am. My name is Jessica. I can’t really tell you much about my life - because I can’t really remember a lot of it. Much of what I would want to remember anyway and I’m sure there are many things my mind has purposely blurred out for its own protection. I’ve been a victim all my life - a victim to my parents, sister, doctors, surgeons, friends and myself, but I don’t want to be anymore. More importantly I can’t and I won’t. I want to be the light. I will be the light for myself and others and I need to prove to myself that I can live a life alone with my struggles, and I will. Along this journey I hope I will show many that they too, can get through the rain. I suffer and have suffered multiple mental illnesses for most of my life. Starting with depression at a young age from which multiple other conditions evolved over time. (For now I will only be revealing and focusing on two of the illnesses I suffer). As of recent years, my life has gotten beyond comprehendable. There are no words for the nightmare my life, to me and those close to me has become. Late
last year I was admitted to a private psychiatric hospital under the guidance of medical professionals. I spent a month resting my body and mind, learning to re-train my brain and way of thinking/reacting. Having to spend your Christmas and New Year (although they allowed overnight leave for NYE) in such a place was so daunting. I couldn’t believe I was a 20 year old in a mental hospital, having already spent half my life in and out of hospital, this was the last thing I would ever have expected to happen and one I feared the most. By the end of the month I didn’t want to leave. I remember how scared I was entering and then how petrified I was to attempt to walk back into reality, real life, with real people who don’t understand me or some of the things I may do. It was an explosion of emotions and panic, but I know now that it was the best thing for me. I went in there not wanting to live on this planet, convinced I was forever going to be stuck in this night mare and that no one could or would be able to help me. They showed me wrong and they showed me light at my darkest point I’ve yet to have (or that my mind will let me remember). This is how I know the light is always there, we just have to fight a bit harder to even see a glimpse of it at times and it always seems to be at our weakest points when the war begins, but you’ll come out and there will be no more fighting as we’ll finally be making lightning. Now, I don’t want this all to be about ‘me’ nor for you to think that. I want it to be about the awareness of these illnesses. I am purely using myself as the subject in knowing it will help others. I know I already have and I thank you all again so much for all that you have done for me without even realising. People think they know - “believe me you don’t”. Unless you suffer from or have experienced it first hand, you are physically not able to comprehend what it is like. I’ve lost relationships with friends and family, turned down and lost work because they simply cannot understand or comprehend what it is I am going through, nor how I am seeing things. Here is a note I wrote in my book dated 11th September 2012 “I feel as if everyone is letting me down. Then when I really concentrate and think, I realise how ridiculous that sounds…. I’m the one letting everyone down. But it isn’t me....I just don’t want them to forget or give up on me... like I am slowly starting to do. No one will ever be able to see the things I see, hear the voices I hear and even if they could... It still wouldn’t be enough. The devil is strong, and so am I... But she can sense my weakness. Please don’t forget it’s not always me. Please don’t give up on me. I need all of you to keep fighting for me or she will win.... and you won’t even know it, until it’s too late...” Schizophrenia is ONE word which simply describes MULTIPLE different things, symptoms and actions. BiPolar Disorder is ONE word which describes MULTIPLE different things, symptoms, actions and cases. This goes for ALL illnesses and conditions. I am incredibly embarrassed and so scared to do this, but I remember being younger and wishing I had someone I looked up too. Someone struggling also, but continuing doing what they loved and made them happy, to show
me that regardless of what you’re dealt you can still live a life - “your life”. I will be that somebody for at least someone, because I know what it’s like to feel like you’re falling, when you know you’re already laid on the floor. I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), which viciously fits in with another condition I suffer Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). So far we have figured out that I have 3 different personalities (or so I have been told, as I am only aware of two). One that I am aware of and the other I’m not. I have no recollection or memory of a lot of the things I do, or things that happen to me in my everyday life (I have to work with what others have told/ shared with me). This is due to my constant dissociating and swapping of personalities - which I am not aware of when it happens and can happen within seconds. This for me, is where it gets really scary. (I will go further into dissociation in my future posts). The one thing that is so important to me “MY LIFE” I have to share unwillingly with others. Knowing this alone, constantly eats at me. I will share with you some of MY personal battles living with BPD and DID. If you are still reading this now and are thinking it’s complete bullshit, close the window or unlike ‘Kazumi’ because it just gets deeper from here on. I speak of these two particular conditions first, as to me they are my biggest battle that I fight continuously. I am my biggest enemy, literally. I say we know of 3 different personalities, but that’s only for those who are close enough to see, close enough who give a fuck to see and close enough to who I let see. Yes, I hear voices and I hallucinate on a 24/7 basis. No, I do not suffer Schizophrenia - this is what I am talking about when I mean each condition for every person is different. It’s taken me a long time, a lot of hard work and constant training of the mind with the help of doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses to manage it to the extent I am able too. Even now, after all these years I still find myself so pathetic when I continuously find myself failing. I still see my road at times going no-where, and I find it very hard to hold onto this beautiful precious thing we call life - because I can confidently say a lot of the time I will tell you, if asked, I don’t want to be here. Even having the magical support from my mum and dad and all the help from the wonderful, empathetic professionals over the years, this illness continues to drown all the light I continue to work for, to keep lit and glowing strong. This is where you all don’t realise the strength and help you give me when you too reach out and share your stories with me and send your beautiful messages. Again, I cannot thank you enough for the many nights you helped get me through. The personality I am aware of is ‘the other Jess’ as we’ve referred to her in the past years. She is a destructive, horrible, manipulative and abusive person. (I’ve never wanted to give ‘her’ a name as I still don’t want to accept that she exists and that I suffer from this illness). She is the voice I constantly hear and the one that I fear the most. She is a big reason I feel so selfish for still being here, as she is such a burden on those I love, for being so horrid to live with and control whenever she may decide to make
99
a presence. The behaviour and incidences my parents, sister, partner and little dog Maxi have experienced, endured and witnessed over the past years - I will never ever be able to repay them, for never giving up on me, even when they knew it wasn’t ‘me’. (In saying that, it has taken my parents and partner a long time and hard work to be able to notice and identify when I have switched and I am no longer ‘me’). Yes, I self-harm. Willingly - not for at least a year. Unwillingly and unknowingly - whenever I awake, shower and feel my body sting, I know I’ve been ‘punished’ for something. Not listening to an order she gave me; not stabbing the person sitting across from me, because I hallucinated something completely ridiculous in order to make me want to do so; eating a meal... (the list goes on). When this does happen, the sheer terror that runs through me blinds the deep, cold sadness until it fades and I fall again. Alone, not understanding why or how this is happening and that unbearable fact of knowing no one else is going to understand either. It is the loneliest feeling in the world. Not wanting to get back up, yet again somehow I fucking do. I don’t know what it is left inside of me, but somehow I always find myself back up. Exhausted and tired, but back up for whatever may come next. “The thing about mental illnesses is they can change so abruptly and flare up or flare down for periods of time with no sign of it happening or going to happen.” I have a particular notebook I bought after having had to give an old one up to my psychologist for reasons about to be said. Whenever “she” (I) self-harm, a note to myself is always written and left in this particular book for me to find after having already found her surprise all over my forearm. (After time I knew her ordinary tricks and traits, I always knew to go and find the book when this happened, and there hasn’t been a time where she hasn’t left a cold, brutal message for me to find). The most spine tingling and fucked up thing, is it’s not my handwriting. No matter how many times I’ve tried imitating the style, the letters - it’s not mine, but who else could have sneaked into my room in the middle of the night, cut my wrists and left me the most disgusting, fucked up note in a book I keep hidden in my room? She writes to me and signs off on my wrist, just as if i were a rag doll, and again one of the hardest things for me to know is that I have no say, no control over any of it. (As told from those present and those who have witnessed ‘other jess’ , not only is her handwriting different, my voice, stare and whole presence completely changes and I never know it’s happened or what happens during that time until it passes and I’m yet again awoken awaiting to be told what I had done or what happened. I can’t express how scary and lonely it is to know this.) In time I will post particular letters I’ve written. I will reveal more to what I am writing now so I can show you my battles with these illnesses. I’m just doing to do it at my own pace. I hope you can understand and I really do hope this is helping. Here is another note I wrote -no idea when, but the words still stick at times “To whatever is out there, I wish to be put out of misery.
Please.. Take me away. I don’t want to have to do it myself, but breaking point is too close to home. I don’t want her to win, but I will at the cost of losing her... and absolutely everything else. It hurts. I have no control. No one understands me. They ALWAYS forget and I’m always the bad guy - but it’s not ‘me’ :(. Please give up on me, so i can too. I’m so tired. I want it to stop. These emotions physically hurt. The voices never stop. When will you understand “SHE WILL NEVER STOP.” To know that 70-80% of the time, you have no control of your own body is fucking terrifying, but knowing and seeing what you are (she) is capable of in this time, without your awareness is something I could never express in words, but agonising cries and screams. It’s a physical pain of absolute terror I will forever have and forever loathe. Knowing no matter what, (she) will always have one up on me, (she) will always have some form of control over myself, actions, everything. As I mentioned, the “other Jess” is abusive, manipulative and as much as I hate to say it - incredibly dangerous to myself, and I fear to others. (Unfortunately, I know this from experience and what I’m told from those present at times). Friendships have near ended out of “other Jess” wanting to physically hurt someone I love, so I distanced myself for their protection. Again, as i said, nobody understands and there’s only so much people will want to and will of course put up with. We all have our own obstacles in life and to be honest what I’m writing isn’t all that easy to comprehend nor take in, let alone appealing to allow into your life. I’m not sure how closely my followers pay attention to my Kazumi pages, but you will notice I post very randomly or very suddenly, maybe not for days and then a clump in one go. This is due to the fact that I physically cannot function properly at times. I can’t write, I can’t get out of bed, I can’t talk. I’m a walking zombie at times and I never know when it will arise and when it will subside. I just have to deal with it the best I can when it happens. It’s so easy to fake a smile, we all know this. My doctors have said in my case it’s something those close to me need to pay extra attention too, as over all these years I’ve perfected it to the point where even I can convince myself that I’m okay. Danger usually then follows. (We don’t know who is acting, we don’t know what they may be fighting and hiding and of course the actors are probably the last person you would have expected - so keep an eye out. Next time you hear an “I’m okay” really make sure they are - some of us need a push, some of us need to be shown that the person digging is trust worthy, is safe, before we can even let it out and let them in.) In regards to my work, it has been very difficult and at times hopeless. I’ve had to cancel work, literally at the last minute, because I had an episode or I wasn’t feeling ‘right’. The word I tend to use is “spaced out” - when I say this, at the time for me things look 2D and I have
a lot of trouble telling what’s real and what’s not. Of course no one is going to be overly happy or understanding of this, especially when I have no real explanation or reason to give them. This is
101
out of pure embarrassment, judgment, that they may not believe me and for protection of myself. It can be so hard. As of recent I travelled over to New Zealand for work. In order for me to do this I had countless appointments with my psychologist and psychiatrist to prepare me for the ‘unexpected’ I may surprise myself with, whilst over there. Even after all the appointments, phone coaching, my medications (which play a massive part in my being able to cope/manage) and my parents unconditional support and help, my doctors and my parents decided it was unsafe and that I was not steady, nor in a good frame of mind to travel due to my recent behaviour and occurring episodes that I was having. My mum in my eyes is the greatest person I’ll ever know. The love I hold for her is like no other I’ve felt, its infinite and we both know it. She knew not being able to go to New Zealand would kill me and put me in a worse place than I was already in at the current time. She wasn’t going to risk it, so she offered (more so stated) that she was coming with me, in order to make sure I and potentially anybody else was and would be okay. I write this with tears in my eyes, knowing my mother was willing to do whatever it took to get me to NZ, so I was able to do what I love. It just showed me and blew me away as to how much of a beautiful person my mother really is. As I said, I will never ever be able to repay her or show her my love and appreciation for all that she has endured and sacrificed for me. Due to work, mum wasn’t able to get the time off to come with me. Things were looking dark until a last minute arrangement which fit perfectly was organised. I was able to travel pursuing my dream with my illnesses knowing I would be okay with the guidance of the special person who had my back the whole trip. This special someone came in handy when on my return back to Australia I was nearly put in an ambulance and not let out of the country. I’m told I had been dissociating and having episodes all morning and they continued at the airport. Apparently, when I dissociate it looks as if I am having a mild seizure. I have no idea it is happening and once I come out of it I drop into a deep screaming cry, never knowing where I am, how I got there or what the fuck had just happened. From what I’ve been told Custom Officers noticed the state I was in and were worried about me flying. It was at that point I had to of course start having another fit/episode (whatever you want to call them). The officers were calling the paramedics whilst my carer was desperately trying to explain to them that my condition was mental, not physical. Over time, we figured out that smells bring me out of these dissociative states a majority of the time. My carer grabbed a packet of twisties and put my face into the packet. All I remember is waking up on the floor of the airport with Custom Officers surrounding me. Pure embarrassment started to drown my body and that voice, that heart breaking but so convincing voice started saying ‘See, you couldn’t have done it alone, you can’t do it alone’. Unfortunately it was true, without my carer there with me I would have been taken to hospital, missed my flight back to Australia and be left to deal with everything by myself (which I wouldn’t have been able to deal with). One task in my head is equivalent to 1000. Along with the disturbingly rapid mood changes, the never ending voices, the forever guessing of what your seeing is ‘real’ or not, never having anyone to talk to because no one understands you, looking in the mirror and not understanding yourself,
not knowing who you’re looking at, and the constant changing of medications is so fucking exhausting. (For anyone who has been/is on any form of anti-depressant, anti-psychotic medication, you will know how horrible some of these medications are and the side effects that come with them.) I am so tired and it is so hard to write a status telling everyone else to smile and be strong, when behind the computer screen is your blue haired, teary eyed, lonely and completely fucked up girl too…. I didn’t realise how hard it would be to sit here and write everything down. Bit by bit, piece by piece, but there’s too much. Even reading what I’ve written angers me because I want to be able to express and share so much more with you. (That would then entail writing a fucking novel). I could sit here and type for hours on just ONE of the above obstacles mentioned. I have so much to say, to share, to reveal, but I’m going to have to do it in sections. I just wanted to share enough for now - to show those who care that this is me, that regardless of this crap I’m still doing what I love and I won’t settle for anything fucking less and that they shouldn’t either. This is MY life and with what little control I have of it, no one will inflict nor influence my way of living. I’m going to attach a note I had written in my book, it must have been at a really dark point and I apologise as it may be quite depressing to some, but I think it’s good for me to show you that I too experience and go through these emotions. I too sit and cry at night for no reason, I bleed just to know I’m alive, I feel the pain you may feel, but instead of dwelling over it now, I’m using it to reach out and help. I really hope I do show others that they aren’t alone.
into your mind. I know they would let me go if they could see..I know they would say it was okay for me to go.. I know they would then realise that if I was let out of this life, I’d have a chance to be happy. I’m so lonely, even having the company of my parents and Maxi, I’m so alone....yet they can never seem to grip it in their minds - once again they don’t understand. If a poor little alien was to crash on earth, by itself, it would awake in a fright, in fear. It would have so many questions as to why and how it got here. Yet the people who found it too would be confused and would question him. Poor little alien, not knowing who he is, where he is, why he is.....and everyone else around him asking the same questions. No one to tell him it would be okay, because no one would really know if he would be. I feel like that little alien.
Remember, you never know someone fully. We all hide pages from our own book, even from ourselves. Try not to be a cunt. Love and live your life, you never know when it will be gone. I told you, you’ll never figure me out – I can’t figure myself out. Walk with me, I’m Kazumi and we’re going to get through the storm. -Kazumi
My whole life I’ve been told things would get better. I hate knowing I’ve written that sentence 1000 times before in various other notes I’ve written. I hate it because it still hasn’t...I’m still here, fighting, for I don’t know what anymore. I don’t want to stand up anymore. I wish you could just let me stay laid on the floor. I’m tired, exhausted, confused, angry... I don’t want to fight anymore. They won’t give me the chance to be happy, to be at peace. I want to know what that feels like... If you love me, let me go So I can finally let her go...”
“I feel like writing again. But I don’t know what to say. I’m watching Girl Interrupted probably for the 100th time.. I guess i try to find comfort, familiarity in anything I can relate too, anything that relates to me... I don’t know what’s real anymore, I don’t know if I ever did. I was outside having a cigarette, looking at one of the trees on the hill, a particular one I always look at. I can see it, I know it’s there, but it’s as if the eyes I’m seeing it from aren’t real, aren’t mine.. I’m in my body but I’m seeing through someone else’s eyes. “Have you ever confused a dream with life?” ...I feel as if I’m always dreaming, I’m forever trying to wake up from a nightmare, my reality. No matter how many times you tell yourself you’ve accepted it, welcomed it, tried to move on from it; another part of you always lets you down. But when you’re in one body and no one else can see or knows ‘her’, you blame yourself, punish yourself because there’s only “one” you to the eye. Especially to the eyes of others...After years I’m still trying to figure out what the fuck goes through my head...99% of the thoughts, feelings and visions I encounter aren’t mine. I wish I could tell people, I wish I could always be the victim, so no one could or would ever want to hurt me. I already hurt and hate myself enough already. I don’t know who the person staring back at me in the mirror is anymore..Whoever I was before is gone and people expect so much of her, but little do they know she left me a long time ago.... I’m trying to find her too..:( I wish some form of technology was available, to let others
Please do not pay attention to my ‘dark side’ in these notes. I am just using them to show you the emotion and frame of mind I am in a lot of the time. In no way do I believe suicide is the answer and I reach out to all those experiencing suicidal thoughts to please confide in someone, get help - I promise there is light in the dark, I promise. I am open to all questions and please keep in mind that any negative comments won’t be paid attention too - if you’ve got something nasty to say to me after reading this, then you’re an utter idiot - I’M MY WORST ENEMY and CRITIC - nothing anyone says isn’t something I or ‘she’ hasn’t said to me already. My skins tough, no point tearing away at never ending layers - I’ll always come back. This is a VERY brief description of my BPD and DID case and they aren’t the only mental illnesses I face. Only 2 of more I will soon write about. This isn’t the reason I’ve had 23 surgeries - That’s my physical side. Yet another battle I’m still fighting to win.

I have a more unconventional look and attitude, and favor more gritty, real, and down to earth (not staged) photos. I specialize in gore/ horror effects and do all of my own photos/makeup/editing etc. I am very open, honest, and blunt...and therefore am nearly universally hated for it! Organic Armor
Tell us a little bit about yourself: What got you interested in creating the amazing pieces you do? Have you taken any classes? How did you get started? I never went to college or took art classes but I drew a lot as a kid. 15 years ago I was a mild mannered mainframe programmer by day who loved to dress up for raves and drum with my prankster friends on the weekends. The Burning Man Festival inspired me to take it to a new level. I made more elaborate costumes each year, experimenting with many materials. Wearing the costumes for hours in all kinds of weather, they had to be comfortable and durable. About ten years ago I hit on latex over fibre as my perfect medium. It’s kind of like paper mache but more flexible and light. The results were spectacular and people began asking me to make costumes for them. About this time most mainframe jobs moved to Asia and I was out of work. I had just gotten married to Jennifer who is an entrepreneur and marketing whiz. We decided that instead of my retraining in the latest programming language, we would start a costume business together. That was in 2006. I have been developing my designs ever since. What is your preferred medium and why? I use latex, which comes from the sap of the rubber tree, in combination with fibre and acrylic. Latex has been used by mask makers for a hundred years and it’s used in Hollywood for prosthetics. But I use it in a unique way, layering it with textiles and painting it to look like metal or leather or bone. The medium is so versatile I can make almost any shape I want, but designing it to fit and move with the body takes engineering. I’ve developed some skill in that over the years. Being a costume wearer myself I know how important it is to have the piece sit right, be balanced and comfortable. Do you have an online portfolio or a blog where we can view your work? There are lots of pictures and things for sale at www. organicarmor.com. We have an active Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OrganicArmor and a Pinterest board now too: http://pinterest.com/organicarmor/boards/
I don’t know if I’ve ever created a masterpiece, but I know my work is best when I can find the creative flow. Time disappears and wonderful ideas and skills emerge from somewhere. What’s your background? I was a big comic book fan as a kid and loved horror movies. As a teen I began my spiritual explorations. I became enamoured of Hindu mythology and psychedelics. In the 80s and 90s I began meditating and studying the work of Allan Watts. Philosophical concerns are still important to me. Now I’m a follower of Eckhart Tolle and Adyshanti. I strive to express these ideas in my work. How has your practice changed over time? I’m always learning. Every custom project has a gift in it - a new method, form or colour, or an original sculpture that we can adapt for use on other pieces. We have had several wonderful studio assistants over the years and I have learned a lot from their fresh perspective on the processes and forms, especially from Lynette McDonough, who brought a more colourful and feminine aspect in. What work do you most enjoying doing? I love a project that involves making new sculpts, and I love it when customers give me a loose description of what they want and then say – “Do your magic, make it look amazing!” That is the best – when they trust in my aesthetic and process and just give me a framework of ideas to play in! What jobs have you done other than being an artist? I’ve done so many kinds of jobs. From making bagels to pressing out circuit boards, from wearing a tie every day programming for big corporations, to being a massage therapist. I worked for magazine printers back when everything was on film, I did flash animation in the early 2000s, I even sculpted bonsai trees. The weirdest job I ever had was impersonating Andy Warhol while doing body painting. I think it all makes me a better artist.
Do you have a favorite artist? If yes, what draws you to that person’s work? I’m a fan of Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo. Also HR Giger and Alex Grey. I am drawn to fantasy elements and archetypal figures because they connect with deeper truths, in the way that poetry can talk about things that prose cannot. Where do you gather most of the inspiration for your works? Our customers have the best ideas! They introduce us to all kinds of worlds and challenge us to stretch creatively every day. I also call on images from ancient cultures – Celtic, Norse, Egyptian, Vedic. I am inspired by the blossoming visionary art world too. My daughter Radhika Hersey is a visionary painter and has introduced me to many inspiring artists – Android Jones, Amanda Sage, Luke Brown. Where can we reach you if we are interested in commissioning you for our own projects? Contact Jennifer, she is great at helping our customers manifest their visions. Jennifer@organicarmor.com What, in your opinion, is the hardest step in creating a masterpiece?
109
What food, drink, songs, music etc inspire you? Since moving to Asheville, NC I have become a fan of small brewery beers. Lately I like listening to Red Barat, Desert Dwellers and Shpongle. I also love the Doors and the dark wave of the 80s, especially the Cure. What is your dream project? I have many but one is to work with a brilliant costume department on a big fantasy or scifi film. Another is to participate in the World of Wearable Art competition in New Zealand. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Don’t just react, create a vision for your life and keep your eye on it as you move forward. Professionally, what’s your goal? To make Organic Armor more successful financially. To collaborate with performers and filmmakers regularly in telling mythic, powerful stories that inspire. What are you working on at the moment? We are super busy with end of summer orders and planning for the Halloween rush. Do you have any favorite blogs you read? I’m not a big reader but I constantly listen to the radio and podcasts. I love the Thom Hartmann show, Democracy Now, This American Life and RadioLab. What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life? Short term - Jennifer and I plan to create a dance piece for the local Fringe Festival this winter. I’ve started incorpo-
rating lighting into the costumes and want to do more of that. We want to vend at some shows in Europe next year. Also, I want to play around with 3D printing with my son, a budding sculptor. I think Organic Armor could adapt well to this technology. What are you doing when you’re not creating? What hobbies do you have? I have just started taking a day off every week. It’s been several years of 24/7 until now. It’s great puttering around the yard, hanging out with my cats, cooking meals from our garden. I like throwing parties. I want to travel more, go to more festivals just for fun, like Boom and Envision, and see splendid natural places. I want to start home brewing and I am a beginner mycologist! What couldn’t you do without? Coffee and my family (not in that order!) Do you admire any artists / photographers? (Famous or not!) We work with many wonderful photographers including WinterWolf Studios, Laura Dark, Bionic Unicorn, Gail Kilker, Nic Adams. They create a visual world for Organic Armor and make us look great! What advice do you have for aspiring artists and creatives? Surround yourself with supportive people. Work on your art almost every day. Make time for being quiet. Take risks and let some kind of truth or essence arise as you work. Play!

Bleeding Gasoline We interview Jason Finlay (Vocals) & Bradd Shickadance (Drums)
When did you first perform together? Jason: We got together in June 2012 and had our first show in October 2012 What are your songs about? Jason: Personal experiences and how I perceive the world we live in. How long have you been performing together? Individually? Bradd: We have been together for a bit over 12 months. But most of us have been in bands since a young age so individually probably over 10 years in various bands. If you had the opportunity to change something about the music industry what would it be? Bradd: Better opportunities for up and coming Australian bands to get recognition and help from bigger labels. What has been your biggest break or greatest opportunity to date? Bradd: Working with one of Australia’s best Engineers Darren ‘Jenk’ Jenkins at The Grove Studios. Do you have any other talents you would like to share with us? Bradd: I have a degree in Graphic Design, which comes in handy for the band. I can also speak fluent Japanese. Jason: I have own my own business on the side so it’s quite a talent running that and managing the band as well all at the same time. Haha
How did you first become involved with performing? Jason: I became involved around the age of 14 when I joined my first band in high school. Bradd: After going to my first big gig, I realized I wanted to be on that stage performing. I started learning guitar then that led to my passion for drums. Where did your name, Bleeding Gasoline, come from? Jason: It came from a song by L.A.. Guns called ‘Bitch Is Back’. The bass player Toby and I were listening to the song and both just realized that that had to be our next band name. How did you get together/form the band? Bradd: After my previous band called it a day I rang Jason and we decided to get together and jam and it kind of just went from there. Jason: Yea my former band had recently broken up as well and Bradd rang to see about starting a new band that combined members of both bands and it all just fell into place from there. How would you describe your music? Bradd: Hard rock / Metal
What made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music? Bradd: Working a 9-5 job never seemed appealing and still doesn’t. Kiss said it best with ‘I wanna rock n roll all night and party every day’. haha When did you discover your love of performing? Bradd: After my first live performance and feeling how the energy and buzz made me feel. Jason: Growing up in a backwards country town I knew from a young age that I needed fame and glory to get me out of there!! Haha now I’m out but I’m still waiting for the fame and glory!! Haha What was the first song you ever performed in public? Jason: It was a Nirvana cover. Bradd: Beds are Burning by Midnight Oil, whilst playing cardboard box drums. What has been the biggest challenge for your group? Jason: Finding a venue that adheres to our rider conditions. FREE BEER!! We’ve been lucky so far everything has been going along great.
How do you relax when you’re not performing or working? Bradd: A few beers and good tunes. Jason: Bed… I like to sleep, a lot!! Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Do you have any goals that you are aiming for? Jason: In the next 5 yrs we hope to have an album or 2 out, hopefully a good fan following so we can try and live off music and possibly touring overseas. Have you ever had any strange or stalker type fans? How do you handle this? How does it affect your relationship with your fans and supporters? Bradd: Yeah I’ve had a guy that was a little overly keen to help the band. It had its advantages like getting me beers and doing some of my dirty work but he kind of became a little too much and wanted too much free shit. Jason: No groupie love yet but hopefully it happens!! Haha Tell us about your most embarrassing moment on stage, if you care to share it! Bradd: I once fell off the back of the stage mid song. The leg of my drum stool slide off and I followed. Jason: Nothing yet but I’m sure it will happen, it’s only a matter of time.
What has been your wildest experience since starting out as a performer? Jason: I got to party with the band Hellyeah one time and that was a very cool moment, actually seeing how ‘rockstars’ party!! I still have a lot to learn haha What has been the hardest part of being involved in this industry? Bradd: Dealing with all the people that think they are someone when they are not. Jason: The financial side of things when being in an independent band. If you could perform with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Jason: The original line up of Drowning Pool. Bradd: Rage Against The Machine or Prodigy Have you been involved in any benefit performances? What was it and how did you become involved? Bradd: We have one coming up in Nov. It’s for MMAD (Musicians Making A Difference). Jason put that together so that’s how we got involved in that but it’s a great organization so we can’t wait to do it!! If you had the chance to perform one song to a worldwide audience that would leave a great impact on the world of today what would you choose and why? Jason: No Religion Here – Our original track which we recently recorded. Bradd: What he said. It will leave a great impact. Who is your fan base? Do you have a street team? Jason: At this stage its more local from the area we are from. We want to expand this over the current year. Hopefully the street team will come. What do family and friends think of your music? Do they support you? Jason: My mum bought 10 CD’s!! And she hates heavy metal. I would say she backs me. Bradd: They dig it for what it is. It’s not really their style. Do your family have a musical background? Bradd: Nope not at all Jason: My pop was a country singer, only a local performer tho. What’s your favourite type of music? Favourite band? Jason: Heavy metal. Slipknot. Bradd: I love heavy music with samples/electronica in it like Static-X, Mad Capsule Markets Do you prefer to perform live or in studio? Jason: Live performance is where it’s at. It’s how you find out if people like what you are doing. Bradd: As much as being in the studio is awesome, it’s all about playing live.
Where did you learn your instruments? Jason: Vocals have been self-taught. Lots of screaming whilst driving!! Bradd: Self taught as well. Where do you get your inspiration? Jason: Lyrically my inspiration comes from the hell we live in, personal events and the way society has become.
139
Do you have any previous interviews/stories for public viewing? Bradd: No, this is our first bit of press. Hopefully we sound like we know what we’re doing!! Haha Do you have a press kit or promo materials? Jason: We are currently making the press kit. We did have a promo video for our single launch, which is online and we put up webisodes of behind the scenes kind of stuff to show people what we do. Do you currently have an agent? Jason: We are self-managed at this stage. Bradd: If you know of any good ones get them to contact us. What is your up to date performance schedule for this year so we can keep all your fans informed? Jason: We have a few coming up. 29th of June at The Beachcomber Hotel in Toukley NSW, 13th of July at The Valve Bar in Sydney, 14th of July back at The Beachcomber Hotel (The July shows are in support of The Dreamkillers tour) then we play Wollongong on the 09th of August and the 10th of August in Canberra at The Basement. Do you have any links to video and media coverage, Facebook, twitter etc. that people could check out? Jason: We are social media whores!! https://www.facebook.com/BleedingGasoline https://www.reverbnation.com/bleedinggasoline http://www.youtube.com/user/BleedingGasoline https://twitter.com/BleedGasoline Who writes the songs? Jason: I write the lyrics, the band writes the music. Bradd: We all pretty much write our own sections and if someone has a better idea or wants to try something we are all open to give it ago. Where is the furthest from home you have performed? Bradd: With my previous band we played Melbourne and Brisbane. Jason: Furthest with this band is Sydney but we have a shows coming up in Canberra and Wollongong and hopefully we can start getting out even further. What did you do before the band? Do you still work outside of music? Jason: I managed a studio before this band and sung in a rock band. Now I’m self employed and run my own booking & promoting company as well as a PA hire company. Bradd: I used to harass Jas at the studio with my old band and yea I still work full-time. Any behind the scene tips/secrets to share? Jason: Be prepared to spend money & work hard. The Australian music scene is amazing but not very profitable. Haha Have you had to deal with any negative press? Bradd: Not yet but I’m sure it will be an interesting read when we do get some.
Is there anyone special that you would like to thank for helping make your dream come true? Bradd: Our wives, girlfriends, friends and anyone else that’s helped us out with gigs and stuff.
Favourite song? Bradd: Like no other - Testeagles Jas: Surfacing - Slipknot Favourite food? Bradd: Mexican Jas: Thai Favourite movie? Bradd: Snatch Jas: Grandmas Boy Phobias? Bradd: Bees Jas: Confined Spaces Celeb crush? Bradd: Cameron Diaz Jas: Megan Massacre Any tattoos or piercings? Bradd: a couple of Tats Jas: I have pirate sleeve that needs to be finished plus several others on my legs, ribs, back and knuckles. Stretched ears and multiple piercings. 141

p Erika earce ARTIST
·
Tell us a little bit about yourself: What got you interested in art? Have you taken any art classes? I am 25 and have been working for myself as an artist and graphic designer for one whole year. Before taking that leap, I worked for four years in a design studio after completing my Bachelor of Graphic Design at AUT. I have liked drawing, painting and making things for as long as I can remember. I have a lot of memories of painting rainbows in kindy. Growing up I did a few holiday art classes but nothing too full on. I mostly did art for fun, although it was probably the only subject I took seriously right the way through school What is your preferred medium and why? I love drawing in pencil and ink. I prefer acrylics for the fast drying time. Especially painting on wood, old skateboards have been a big thing for me over the last couple of years. I like the idea of making something new and treasured from something old and no good. Where do you gather most of the inspiration for your works? Every where I go! I am very inspired by nature and always have pretty flowers growing outside my studio. I have a few favourite themes that I always go back to like Mexican and surf art. I use books, magazines and the internet for most of my references and research. Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and discovered a whole new genre of art? How did it turn out? I used to paint a lot of NZ landscapes and surf art, because that was all I ever saw in the galleries that appealed to me. It wasn’t until I spent some time in LA that I realised I could paint things that I liked (pin up girls, old school tattoos, street style art) and people would be interested in my work. That was in 2011.. So yeah, I would say it turned out well!
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
Do you have any other interesting hobbies? I’m pretty outdoorsy, I live at the beach during summer. I like surfing, sailing, snorkelling, camping, fishing. I do face painting and body art. I also do burlesque and belly dancing.. I got into those to have an excuse to make/ wear fabulous costumes! Where can we reach you if we are interested in commissioning you for our own projects? Send me an email! erikapearce.nz@gmail.com or private message me via my artist page on Facebook. What role does the artist have in society? I think I am pretty lucky to have been able to follow and develop my passion into something I could actually make a living from. I really want to be able to give back and help inspire and motivate other people into following their own dreams and ambitions. I also think artists and designers have such an important role in beautifying their surroundings and making their community a nice place to live. How has your practice changed over time? Before, when I worked full time as a designer, I could only paint and draw in my free time. Now it is my full time job. I don’t really have any free time! I had to invent new “hobbies” so that I get time out from doing what I do. So cooking and gardening have sort of filled that space and become my downtime. What art do you most identify with? I studied a lot of the old masters and religious art at school, it has always really inspired me for the detail, technique and history. I am also pretty obsessed with tattoo art, especially old traditional themes, I like to put my own spin on them. I really appreciate artwork that demonstrates a huge amount of skill and realism, especially of random subjects. I dig a lot of the low-brow art that comes out of LA.

What work do you most enjoying doing? I love commissions, they open up new ideas and subjects for me which I would never have had the opportunity of doing otherwise. I sometimes find it hard to call myself an “Artist” .. which is ridiculous as I paint pretty much everyday. This is because I don’t like the pretentious label often associated with Artists. I would consider myself in a way, a commercial artist or illustrator, as I respond really well to being given a brief and running with it. I also find doing artwork for someone else so extremely satisfying and rewarding! What jobs have you done other than being an artist? My first job was working at a nail salon when I was 15. I worked as a swimming teacher and a life guard, as well as a job in a plant nursery, while studying. They were really good jobs, I got to ride around on a quad bike all day at the nursery too. I went and worked at a summer camp in Maine, USA in 2011 for a couple of months, teaching sailing and being a lifeguard. Best experience of my life! What memorable responses have you had to your work? I get the biggest buzz out of doing for something that is a surprise for someone and then seeing their reaction! I am working on a few secret things at the moment and I am so excited to see them go to the lucky recipients! What food, drink, songs, music etc. inspire you? I am hanging out for summer fruit right now. I like most food, except for capsicum, they are ghastly! And seafood doesn’t like me, I wish it would though, cause I like catching it. I can’t work/drive/function without music. My tastes change daily, from reggae and old school hip hop one day, to drum and bass or jazz on another, to rock or latin. I like stuff that’s a bit different. I am also a big fan of kiwi music.
Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it? I am a big talker, so often I think it would be nice to have more people around. It is nice being in my own space though. I have my vintage foxy dog, Skipper for company all day and am pretty social otherwise. Professionally, what’s your goal? I want to really get my work out there and create opportunities so that I can keep supporting myself and keep doing what I love! One silly little goal for this year was to get my Facebook followers up around 3000 (I started with 500 in January), I’m at about 2400 right now .. so I might get there! What couldn’t you do without? My family, friends and boyfriend, as well as the encouragement of random strangers. It isn’t easy chasing a dream, but when people support you and give you the little lifts up when you are feeling unsure, it really is the best thing. What are you working on at the moment? Some secret projects.. Soon to be revealed! As well as a sexy skate deck painting of gorgeous tattoo model Arabella Drummond. What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life? To just keep living the dream. I would love to travel again when I can, ideally work and travel! I would love to get involved with some art projects that take me to different places around the world. What would people be surprised to learn about you? That I really have no idea how the art world works! I feel like I am ambitiously running into it blind, it is quite

I guess the first thing we want to ask is how you got started with photography? I started out taking holiday photos while my partner and I were overseas on trips together. That’s how I started getting familiar with my camera. A year or so one of my good friends was getting married and I offered to take some wedding photos for them as a gift. I took 3 bookings from that wedding from people wanting my work! I started out doing a lot of weddings each year and slowly branched into the fashion and glamour industries. I got my break there through networking and being friends with a few of the girls. Do you prefer the fashion and glamour industries to the weddings? Yes and no. I love Fashion and Glamour, but then I also love weddings. You are one of the biggest parts of the couples memory of the day. The stress and responsibility level of a wedding however is huge! I can imagine, the expectations of brides are pretty huge Actually its not that bad. The brides know your talented and have more ideas than them so are happy enough to leave you alone for the day and let you do your thing. I haven’t really encountered a “bridezilla”. Your brand is very stylish and modern, did you design your own branding? My best mate from Signbiz helped me design my logo. I designed and built my website. Do you find your particular branding brings you clients that go for the upmarket style of photography? I believe your work is represented by the image. By image I mean the way you present yourself, business cards, logo etc. People pay for an experience not just a product, so yes I would like to think so. I once had a top NZ fashion week designer say to me as I handed her my card “Wow, that’s an impressive business card, if you put that much effort into your cards I want to see your work!” That’s a great way to look at it The thing is people pay say $20,000 for Nigel Barker
to be at their wedding taking images. There may be a photographer taking the same quality images for $4000 but the brand, the name and the association behind “Nigel Barker”, it’s an experience. A lot of your images have agency represented models in them, did you start out using experienced talent or was that a progression? I started out using girls that wanted to build their portfolio, obviously a TFP kind of deal, until I started meeting the actual models. Then slowly I faded them out. Did you find that working with new models gave you a greater appreciation for, and a good grounding in, posing? Yes! Most definitely. I think a professional model who knows the product, what you are trying to achieve and has experience makes probably 70% of a photo. What people don’t think about is a model is what makes or breaks a photo. You can have amazing natural light and clothing, but if the model doesn’t play the game it makes the whole photo lack something. Do you think that once you reach a certain stage in your photography it is imperative to begin using professional models? Yes, once you get to that stage. It’s the same thing as branding. Your images (and the models that represent your images) become the face of your business so yes I think you do if you want to always be getting better and progressing. Was it difficult to break into shooting with agency represented models? It is all about knowing the girls personally. It is also about having a working relationship with the models and the agency owners/operators and being able to borrow them for various projects. Also, when I go to a fashion shoot for a client (designer) they have hired the model already so I don’t get a lot of say into who gets hired. I don’t shoot too many of those girls now as the agency has gone to Australia With you soon to follow we hear Yes, indeed! Did your decision to move have anything to do with the opportunities here being less than those in Australia? Yes. The amount of models, designers, agencies are mind blowing over there. Plus the lifestyle is fantastic. Will you be back to keep working with your regular clients? A lot of my clients have moved on themselves I still hold a big reputation in weddings but fashion it is changing every 2 days here

Do you think the recent surge in people becoming photographers and saturating the market is having a negative impact on in the industry here and abroad? Totally! People graduating from CPIT etc. doing jobs for stupid amounts of money are killing the industry. On the other hand when you’re starting out you need to get your name out there. There is also really no other way around it though, the gear is so expensive! Have you had a lot of people pumping you for tips and tricks that are new to the industry? Like you have no idea! People ask me all the time how do I get clients. How do I know the models etc. I don’t mind helping people with gear but I worked hard and networked hard to get some of the contacts I have now. Does that make it difficult to know who to trust when people are trying to become your friend? It really does. You need to know who to trust when becoming friends with girls, you don’t know what they are trying to achieve. Obviously you don’t need to worry about the girls trying to get too close to you for the wrong reasons now that you have Storm . Haha, this is true! How long have you been working full time in the industry now? Well that’s tough because I’m never on it full time. I do lots of little things to keep my mind sane. The Gold Coast will be the first time I am 110% a fashion photographer. Christchurch just doesn’t have the market here so I do lots of other little things to pass the time. I have been a pro photographer for 3 years now. At the moment a lot of photographers are complaining about their images being copied. Have you ever had this happen to you? Yes, I had a guy try and steal all my images from fashion week and cut the bottom off the images! Also I got national geographic your shot 2009 I think it was, and someone stole that image for a calendar. There was a law suit over that.
Is there anything you wish you had done sooner? I wish I had of learnt video a lot earlier than now. The capabilities of video from the DSLR these days is amazing. What would you say is the most common misconception people have about working as a photographer? Glitz and glam of working with models and in flash locations! They don’t see the hours in Photoshop, the charging and cleaning cameras, the organising of an outfit, a girl, hair, makeup etc. What is always in your kit? Oh man what a question! Camera and lenses (of course), spare batteries, a cloth for cleaning. MacBook to live stream the images to while shooting so the client can see. A flash in case I get some tricky lighting. And always a spare camera in case I run into an issue. What is the worst part of being a photographer? I would say the setup time for a shoot. People think it’s a rock up and take some snaps kind of deal. It’s a lot of setting up before you get to take the first shot. If you could change anything about the industry what would it be? I would have to say the mind frame of people thinking photographers can work for free all the time. This whole TFP thing is cool, but it gets abused so much. Our gear and time is very valuable and if you’re trying to make a living it kills it for you. Do you have any advice for our readers that would like to follow in your footsteps and start a career in photography? I would say invest in good gear. You get what you pay for. Network like hell. I make a point of talking to everyone I can because you never know how they can help or what doors they can open. And lastly is there anyone you want to thank or shout out to? My very supportive partner, Storm. She encourages me to always push forward.
Have any particular photographers impacted the way you work or inspired you in any way? Yes I love Karl Shaw’s images!! I look up to him big time! Also Karl Taylor is an amazing photographer! What would be your dream job/campaign? An editorial spread for Vogue or official photographer of a Victoria Secret show What’s next for you - anything you want to share? I’m heading to the gold coast to shoot beach babes and models, and work closely with BabeMethod

Jessica Luna Circle of Wolves
How did you get started with jewellery design? I’ve been creative and interested in art my whole life. My grandfather, Don Ramage - is a well-respected NZ Modernist artist and he passed his creative traits to my mother. I was always inspired by her and left High School at 15 to study fine arts. After finishing my BA in Visual Arts I spent the last 7 years working as a commercial and freelance graphic designer, art director, photographer, digital and traditional artist. I am always exploring new mediums but the majority of my work is digital photography with avant-garde fantasy themes/aesthetics, and traditional artwork in watercolour paint and ink. Last year I started making jewellery with my original artwork as a way to ‘house’ or give a place to all of the images I have made during my artistic journey. I also make cosmic and ritual raiment clothing to accompany my jewellery. Jewel-crafting is something I had been thinking about for a while but never had the time or means to do it until about 18 months ago. I always felt my images were kind of wasted if they weren’t all framed and on the wall, so putting them into jewellery was a way for me to give them a tangible place to exist that was affordable and wearable. All of my jewels contain my original artwork and every piece is infused with energy and power, promoted by the image inside. I like to think that my customers see my pieces as not just jewellery but as artistic amulets, all are slightly different with their own magical character. Making customised pieces for people only magnifies this effect and I like to think I give people more than just a pretty piece of jewellery but an item they can treasure. Symbols and images are so powerful and everyone has a favourite; whether it’s image, totem animal or colour that
makes them feel something positive. Making talismans and totem amulets as archetypes to promote feelings of energy, protection, love (and even dark intent) can make us feel beautiful, calm, brave. Aesthetically pleasing objects and images are really therapeutic, and I find it soothing and satisfying to make beautiful things. Is anyone else in your family artistic? I believe your sister is also very creative Yes my younger sister Petra is amazing! She is really good at sculpture and 3D artwork and she crafts jewellery out of specialty art clay and resin. My mother Jill also paints, she is the one who first showed me watercolour paints and taught me the basics. When I was at primary school she did a series of allegorical paintings of magical Amazonian women with lots of bright colours and symbolism, and they made me determined to learn to paint as well. I think my style and need for femininity and beauty definitely comes from my mum And my grandfather as well which I mentioned before *in case you are curious, this is a small gallery of my grandfathers work* http://www.paper-works.co.nz/artwork.aspx?ArtistID=13 Your grandfathers work is fantastic. Its amazing how modern it is, how relevant to todays art scene they are. How did you get involved with photography? I was given a poster print of John William Waterhouse’s ‘Ophelia’ when I was 13 by a friend, and it inspired me so much to learn to paint. I spent a lot of time researching Pre-Raphaelite artwork and discovered Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and the other masters. Their use of light and colour is so amazing, and I so wanted to be able to paint as realistically as they did, but didn’t

have the skill nor patience - so I try to re-create the atmosphere and aesthetic through photography. When I was 14 I got given a digital camera for Christmas (it was only about 1 or 2 megapixels back then!) And I got obsessive about taking self portraits from then on, which I still do regularly as I find it therapeutic and satisfying to be able to shoot if I have the need to make art. My photography is my own contemporary Pre-Raphaelite imagery, I pay a lot of attention to light, substance and richness of tone as well as a female subject who appears to be from another time or place. The Pre-Raphaelite paintings made me feel like I did when I was little and played dress-up as a queen or sorceress, and this feeling is still so influential to my artwork and my jewellery. Are there any modern artists of any medium that inspire you the same way as the old masters? I have so many inspirations, but my most consistent source of influence and motivation to create is my lover and best friend, Ryan Shaw. His work is incredible, I admired his work for a long time before we were together and he still blows my mind every day. He is a huge support to me and motivates me when I fall into an artistic black hole (as all creatives do). I also really love the sublime feminine photography of Ellen Rogers, all of her work is analogue film photography done entirely in the darkroom, which is becoming increasingly rare these days. We have so many talented artists in New Zealand too, I love Isis Graywood’s work and I am honoured and lucky that she is a close friend of mine. Jessicka Cameron of Visceral Photography is my favourite NZ photographer, she is really talented and beautiful. Both outstanding artists They are both really unique too in their styles Do you have any words of wisdom for those who are new to artistic pursuits? Experiment and make as much artwork as you can. See every trial as a success even if the result isn’t how you anticipated it. Don’t make art with the sole intention of it turning out perfect - relax and let the Muse guide you. Trust your instincts, if an image feels finished - let it rest, if it needs work, meditate on it and wait for the right moment before adding to it. If you’re stuck for inspiration, paint in the forest or beside the sea. Be inspired by the wilderness. Be inspired by other artists but don’t imitate, manifest the bright spark of inspiration into your own aesthetic.
Do you think NZ is supportive of the artistic community? I think the majority of NZ isn’t aware of most artists in this country; aside from the household names of the more mainstream contemporary artists that are often featured in TV and media coverage. I would like to see a lot more ‘Lowbrow’ work being promoted - I feel that some of the contemporary work that gets given promotional preference is lacklustre in comparison to the artwork of people like Isis Graywood, Vivien Masters and other talented image makers in the ‘alternative ‘ NZ community. I would love to see their work exhibited outside of their usual circles and for darkly themed/alternative artwork to be given more preference and recognition.
What’s your fav comfort food? Apple crumble. I make the best one ever. I like to think I inherited this skill from my grandmother Yum, one of my all time fav’s So good!
Do you find that people are becoming less willing to pay for art and photography these days, compared to 10-15years ago? I think some people don’t appreciate the amount of energy and time that goes into any kind of creative work, whether it’s photography, modeling, video editing - anything expressive. Some people see art as a hobby rather than a profession, but that’s a really disrespectful and ignorant attitude to have. We work just as hard, if not harder - than most people! I think it’s difficult for some non-creative people to empathise with artists sometimes, they forget that for every finished work there are hours of tests, errors and struggle. Refining and perfecting a piece until it’s completed is an emotional as well as physical task, and this time should be appreciated and paid for. I think the internet also contributes to the lack of respect towards artists and copyright of images, people seem to think that they can use anything they like if they find it online. I have seen a few local stores making jewellery using stolen images by world-renowned artists and they don’t seem to realise it’s not only disrespectful but also illegal. I really pride myself on all of my pieces being 100% my original work
What song/musician/group gets you ready for a night on the town? I know this is really boring... But I’m actually a total hermit and spend most of my time at home, I only ever go out if there is a band I really want to see. I have a really eclectic taste in music, but my favourite artist at the moment is Chelsea Wolfe. I can’t wait for her new album to come out in September. Her music really soothes and inspires me. Another favourite female performer is Natasha Khahn of Bat For Lashes. Her fashion style is a big influence on mine as well Last one is person, living or dead, who you would most like to have a one to one with And I’d love to sit down and talk with Sylvia Plath or Cleopatra - two long-standing muses of mine
Fav movie? That’s such a hard question... I can’t pick just one, so my top 3 are: Viy, Pulp Fiction and Pan’s Labyrinth Here is a still from Viy: http://img12.imageshack.us/ img12/3455/viyaavi003071880.jpg Awesome wicked Russian movie, the first Russian horror film you should watch it
Have you had to deal with anyone stealing your work? Its quite prevalent at the moment A couple of times in the last few years I have seen some of my older digital work pop up on foreign websites that sell prints, magnets and phone covers. Unfortunately that sort of thing happens regularly to contemporary digital artists like Natalie Shau - people really don’t seem to care about making money from someone else’s hard work, which is a real shame. In most cases, fans of the artist will discover it and point it out - which is really helpful Im sorry you have had to deal with that, its a really awful thing for people to do and is like putting your hand in the artists pocket and helping yourself. Art will stagnate if people keep doing things like this and the artists have to find some other way to make a living. Definitely. I also think it discourages artists from sharing their work online, which is the only way most of us can have our art seen. Exhibiting is expensive and there are only a few galleries in NZ that really support alternative art

Emanation Events is a New Zealand owned and operated company that prides itself on being creative, unique and helpful. As a fairly new company with a small number of staff, your costs are kept at a minimum while your ideas are not! Since opening they have made an impact on the scene like no other. Emanation Events is the brainchild of Matt Maclean. If you’re a local of Christchurch Im sure his name will sound familiar. As a previous bar owner Matt knows what it takes to keep an event running to schedule while making sure everyone is having such a good time they don’t want it to end. Matt was the event manager behind our own launch party back in May. Everything went surprisingly well, which is pretty rare as you will know if you have ever run an event before. Its always expected that there will be unforeseen issues and problems crop up. With Matt running the night for us we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Emanation Events Ltd does more than just organize events however. They have a dedicated team of promotional staff, both male and female, to represent your brand. They have a body painter on the books who will wow you - we had Stacey at our launch and if you check out the photos earlier in this issue you will get a glimpse of what she do. They also have a photography service, models, crowd hire, the list goes on!
