We always enjoy the feedback we get from you as well as any new ideas you have for articles you’d like to see in the magazine. There are a lot of resources out there for teachers at the moment with many companies offering teacher support and conferences which discuss best practices and allow you time out to plan and share ideas with your peers. There also seems to have been a huge increase in franchise opportunities which can help you grow your dance business. Many of these franchises have been created by dancers and dance teachers who have seen a gap in the market which they have filled with innovative dance ideas from the youngest dancers to adults and the older generation. We take a look at a few of these companies on page 22.

With a new home at the Winter Gardens, the 2011 ISTD Blackpool Grand Finals were bigger and better than ever! Dancers and audiences alike welcomed the move and the Empress Ballroom proved the perfect setting for a fabulous weekend of dancing. The atmosphere in the Ballroom was buzzing, with the usual frantic activity off-stage as competitors caught-up with old friends and got in some last-minute practice before their event. And with 4,000 entries overall and 15 hours of competitions on Sunday alone, there were lots of events for everyone to take part in! The new venue offered more seating, more space, a separate practice area, a huge floor for the competitions (the same floor used at the Open British Championships), and a much warmer environment for participants. The Grand Dance
on Saturday night lived up to its promise of an event not to be missed with a spellbinding performance by world class demonstrators Maurizio Vescovo and Andra Vaidilaite. And then it was time for everyone to take to the floor for a night of dancing featuring music by the Empress Dance Orchestra with Ashley Frohlick, Musical Director. Dancesport International (DSI) has been the main sponsor of the Blackpool Grand Finals since it first took place in Blackpool in 2000 and their stand was a hive of activity throughout the weekend, with competitors taking advantage of the opportunity to pick up essential items and try on the latest styles. Protein Dance win Best Independent Company On Monday January 23rd 2012, Luca Silvestrini picked up the award for Best Independent Company for his company Protein Dance at the 2011 Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards which were held at the Place in London. Receiving the award from the Guardian’s chief dance critic, Judith Mackrell, Luca said, “I’m excited and overwhelmed! There’s a lot of time and risk involved in putting together and keeping together an independent company and I’d like to thank all the people who have contributed and
shared with me this amazing artistic journey – I particularly want to share this award with Protein Dance’s co-founder, Bettina Strickler, with whom I started Protein at the Place in 1998. This award is fantastic – thank you!” Following the success of its 2011 tour including a six night run at the Edinburgh Fringe, the show returns for a spring 2012 tour which kicks off at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre on January 27th. ‘LOL (lots of love)’ balances the promises of
an online life and the complexity of real relationships to put love, wanting and connectedness centrestage. Against a video wall of dozens of screen-gazing individuals, Protein’s six dancers stylishly nail the language of life online, talking and dancing at speed and making straight-to-the-audience confessionals. With video animation by Rachel Davies and original music by Andy Pink, these ingredients conjure a razor-sharp commentary on our Facebook society, and affecting rendering of human need.

The Start of a Year, the End of an Era
Momentum builds for cultural celebrations in Yorkshire As the world’s sporting elite begin final training preparations before performing centre stage at the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, the cultural arena also steps up a gear in Yorkshire as momentum builds for imove, Legacy Trust UK’s creative programme for the region. 2012 will see the culmination of months of preparation and an ambitious programme of cultural events rolling out across diverse locations in and around Yorkshire. imove is an imaginative celebration of human movement, bringing together the best artistic talent from the region. Since imove began in 2010, 17,000 people already have been involved in the programme of events, designed to inspire the public in the run up to the London 2012 Games. More than 30 new projects have been commissioned
by imove which is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Games across the UK, Yorkshire Forward and Arts Council England. 2012 will see more than 50 creative events encompassing many artforms including classical music, dance, site-specific performance and creative writing, each with a sporting twist, taking place in unusual locations and giving people across the region the chance to hear, see and be a part of the cultural celebrations. Spring 2012 sees Scottish Dance Theatre’s final tour with Janet Smith as Artistic Director. Premiering a new work, Pavlova’s Dogs by Rachel Lopez de la Nieta, alongside a programme of shorter works, the spring tour celebrates the diversity of work the company has produced with Janet at the helm. After 14 years as SDT’s Artistic Director, Janet Smith leaves to take up the role of Principal at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. Under Janet’s tenure the company has grown from the small scale Dundee Rep Dance Company with 5 part time dancers and 3 full time staff into Scottish Dance Theatre; Scotland’s leading contemporary dance company which now employs9 full time dancers, 2 apprentices and 10 office staff, presenting highly acclaimed work across the world. “I have spent 14 wonderful years with this pioneering, passionate and generous company. After the spring tour, SDT is heading off to performances in the UK, Italy, Germany and the US with new leadership on the horizon. Meanwhile I take my leave, to become Principal at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. I’m taking a corner of Dundee with me, many friendships and a real appreciation of my time and involvement in the dance
News from RAD Following the recent announcement by the RAD Examinations Board that RAD examinations in Scotland have been accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) have now confirmed that these new qualifications will be subsumed within the UCAS points tariff system on the same basis as their Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) counterparts.
This development will enable students who achieve a Pass or higher in these examinations at Level 3 to use their RAD examination results towards their points tariff score when applying to University or a Higher Education institute in the UK.
SQA Accreditation was given to RAD examinations in November 2011, with the awarding of these new qualifications first taking place in January 2012.

Previews Breakin’ Convention

Sadler’s Wells’ internationally celebrated three-day festival, Breakin’ Convention is back for the ninth year showcasing some of the world’s finest performers in hip hop dance. As well as breaking and popping, audiences can see different hip hop dance forms including locking and b-boying plus newer styles such as house dance, devised on dance floors and born out of club culture. Hosted and curated by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jonzi D, Breakin’ Convention presents a dazzling array of the very best in hip hop dance and there are dozens of extra events in the mix including workshops, film screenings, DJ demos, impromptu foyer freestyle sessions and even live aerosol art. Breakin’ Convention 2012 will feature stunning performances from international acts including: ILL-Abilities, an international breakdance company that challenges the misconceptions about people with disabilities; Clash 66 (France & Korea) returning with their sublime duet that challenges the notions of hip hop dance theatre, Bboy Ata (Finland) with his bboying puppet and the world’s leading House dance company Serial Stepperz (France) and current world champions, Vagabonds Crew (France), who have recently won both Battle of the Year and UK Bboy Championships in 2011. UK acts include a
return from Unity with a punchy piece about East London postcode wars; Broken Doll with a dark solo, and a world premiere from Tony Adigun, a co-commission by Breakin’ Convention and WIP in Paris. STILLED by Fevered Sleep STILLED is an unusual performance work of distinction by Fevered Sleep, one of the UK’s foremost independent theatre
companies whose headquarters are at the Young Vic. It is simultaneously an absorbing, durational dance piece and an exhibition of pinhole camera photographs which are taken of the performers in action and then exhibited throughout. The production is performed not only for a human audience, but also for an audience of pinhole cameras, all of which were designed and handmade by Fevered Sleep’s visionary artistic director, David Harradine. During the performance, these cameras take long exposure photographs of the dances which are developed and then displayed as part of the event. While the audience witnesses the performance taking place, they can also see the strange, often abstract images that bear witness to earlier improvisations. Says David Harradine: “Stilled is a meditation on the nature of perception...of taking time to become visible, taking time to be present, taking time to look and taking time to see.” The audience at the Siobhan Davies performance will be invited to view the performance and photos at any time between 1pm and 8pm and will be encouraged to move around the performers or indeed just take time to sit and enjoy the entire experience.

creations of the Festival Pattern Group, a unique project at the 1951 Festival of Britain involving collaborations between scientists, designers, and manufacturers. The group used images from the scientific process of X-ray crystallography to inspire an eclectic array of patterns that appeared on fabrics, objects, and ceramics. David: “By directing X-ray light at crystal structures and studying the patterns created as this light falls on photographic paper, scientists could calculate the arrangement of atoms within molecules thereby allowing invisible structures at molecular level to be perceived for the first time. In making Stilled we’ve shifted focus onto other forms of perception: those involved in watching and recording live performance. Here, pinhole cameras absorb the light shining off dancing bodies to create images showing strange patterns of movement and stillness. Like the substances being examined in the crystallographer’s lab, the bodies under scrutiny here need to be held still in order to be visible; and like the scientists who had to interpret the patterns they saw on their photographic plates, the viewer examining the relationship between movement and image in Stilled has to look creatively, at portraits that hover between presence and absence.”

Resolution! By Jessica Wilson
The New Year opened with a bang at The Place, seeing its 23rd edition of Resolution take to the stage over the course of six weeks between Friday 6 January and Friday 17 February. Resolution is renowned for providing a prominent choreographic platform for new and upcoming works, introducing the contemporary dance world to “the new kids on the block” in the first stages of their choreographic careers. Created in 1989 by The Place’s former Theatre Director John Ashford, Resolution has constructed a solid reputation for supporting new choreographers in their move to the professional performance world from purely vocational dance training. Resolution has previously helped launch the careers of many of the UK’s leading dance artists such as Wayne McGregor, Javier de Frutos, Mark Baldwin, and more recently, artists including Katie Prince, Hofesh Shechter, James Wilton and James Cousins. Wilton went on to win the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest in 2010, and Cousins was crowned the winner of the New Adventure Choreographer Award in 2011. Historically, the dance sector is filled with legacies, from Doris Humphrey to Merce Cunningham and although techniques such as these still play a fundamental role in the training of the next generation of dancers, new work also contributes much to our understanding of the fast evolving pace of contemporary dance. It could be argued that the world of contemporary dance today is moving away from these powerful legacies, with previous artistic thought and “traditional” movement being forgotten in the rush to achieve more. Without innovation, however, the past cannot truly be acknowledged in the constant development of contemporary dance, rather than viewed as a departure from where it originated. Resolution – which presented 78 new works this year – is a pure advocator of this in displaying such a profound variety of new dance works. As a whole showing in itself, Resolution is a large strand within the contemporary dance infrastructure, taking new artists on a journey of discovery and experience as they work to invent themselves as upcoming choreographers. A series of additional workshops for

Resolution organised by The Place provided a distinct insight into other aspects of professional choreography, which can often be forgotten. In the current climate of both the economic and arts sectors, there is an increasing demand for “business” crossover skills to emerge through independent dance artists and companies in their methods to survive the Government spending cuts instilled early last year. From lighting and design to marketing and publicity, The Place ensured that the selected participants received an all-encompassing experience in the preparation and launch of their work onto the contemporary dance scene.
Partnered with the performances of “one night only” was the element of Resolution Review, a scheme which saw six aspiring dance writers paired with six leading dance critics; Josephine Leask, Donald Hutera, Sanjoy Roy, Keith Watson, Graham Watts and Lyndsey Winship. Through an open application process, the six young writers selected were mentored throughout the season by the critics in their construction of a review each of the evening’s works. Not only did The Place encourage emerging artists, but emerging critics also, providing many potential openings for career paths in the future. It seems The Place is producing
the next generation of dance artists of all genres, and quite rightly so. As an annual open season of The Place, the promotion of emerging choreographers through Resolution is second to none, as they present their works on one of the most famous pre-eminent dance stages in London. The nightly changing triple bills meant audiences would be privy to an exclusive showcase of new material, shedding light on the various ticket deals The Place instilled to enable audience members to view as much work as possible. In addition to the 78 participants, performers from some of the UK’s best dance companies were part of the progressions towards choreographic success. Renowned independent dance artists were also involved in this, such as Scottish Dance Theatre Company’s Matthew Robinson, Henri Oguike Dance Company’s Elena Zaino and Protein Dance’s Kip Johnson. Particularly, performances of January 24 and January 27 demonstrated huge versatility within the dance sector and a terrific insight into the world of emerging choreographers. Filled with dance theatre, Release-based work, struggles and then comedy, the two specific evenings held a treasure trove of dance for their
audiences in their mapping of today’s dance landscape. First up, Raquel Claudino’s The Dead Can Dance offered a dramatic portrayal of the rebellion we experience as we try to hide everyday issues. A duet, the performers riddled themselves with seemingly uncontrollable movement in their violent display of extraordinary afflictions. Subtle Kraft Co. presented Cravings of Intimacy & Solitude as the second duet of the evening, exploring how our cravings define us and from this the perceptions we gather of the relationships we form with others. The piece was powerful and touching, using physical constraints to emphasise the individual yearning to break away from what binds us. Closing the evening was Rosie Whitney-Fish & Company’s The Femme Fatales, an expressive dance theatre piece which combined the desire for characterisation with an eclectic range of dance styles. As an ensemble piece, the groups of dancers complemented each other perfectly in the intertwined display of drama, dance, film and song as they searched for their inner femme fatale. The second evening produced an even further diverse range, contrasting indefinitely. Opening with Bethan Peters’ Remnants, the intimate duet drew on the importance of retaining our experiences in order to
maintain the relationships which emerged throughout these experiences. Both dynamic and controlled, the movement revealed two extremely competent dancers striving for recognition. Anuska Fernandez’s Amores displayed further dance theatre, exploring life’s struggles and contradictions through comedy and organic movement. Another highly characterised performance, Amores portrayed the intensity of human life through relationships, personalities and passions that are often overlooked through six profound performers. Rounding off the drama was HitchhikeDance Collective’s Figurines which aimed to stage an array of personas such as a dead body, Mr Muscle and The Statue of Liberty simply through a solo performer. Intriguing and minimalist, the piece questioned our ability to interpret and indeed the fleeting nature of the dance sector as it evolves. Though the performances I saw were just a small cross-section of the entire works of Resolution, each piece across the two evenings greatly contrasted between every element that constructed the individual performances. Although varied, the range of choreography was paramount, demonstrating the sheer versatility of today’s dance generation, which The Place continues to nourish through such an inspiring platform as Resolution.

Big Dance 2012 The biennial Big Dance festival has grown since its first outing in 2006 to become the world’s largest and most influential dance festival. The programme, which is part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad, will take place across the UK between 7-15 July 2012 and includes a 7-week countdown period starting on 18 May. Big Dance 2012 will feature dance activity in a range of locations across the UK – swimming pools, car parks, playgrounds, squares, museums and palaces. The backbone of the programme is the Big Dance Hub network - leading dance organisations based in every region in England, with 6 in Scotland and 1 in Northern Ireland and Wales. These hubs have been tasked with building a network of local authorities, health organisations, museums, libraries, sports and arts sectors to deliver an ambitious locally driven programme. “We gave the Hubs a really tall order” explains Jacqueline Rose, Big Dance Director “and it’s a challenge that they’ve really risen to. What we’re going to see in the summer is a range of different, but complementary

We want to really celebrate the range on offer when the eyes of the world are on us for the Games” Jacqueline adds. There is a Big Dance Handbook available for download which provides more information on how to publicise your regular dance class, promote a performance or hold a special Big Dance event. But not content with getting the UK dancing, the Big Dance Schools Pledge hopes to get toes tapping around the world. Renowned choreographer, Wayne McGregor, artistic director of Wayne McGregor|Random Dance, has created a 5-minute piece of
choreography that schools can download and learn in taught sections. The plan is to break the world record for The Largest Simultaneous Dance Routine at 1pm on 18 May 2012. Big Dance has been working in partnership with the British Council to promote this around the globe and previous Schools Pledge’s have reached as far as Germany, Sri Lanka and India. In 2011, 1,300 young people in Lebanon headed to downtown Beirut to perform the Pledge choreography. And it’s not just for young people. Big Dance are looking for colleges, universities and workplaces to join in the fun. The Olympic torch arrives in the UK on 18 May and they want everyone around the world dancing in celebration of this once in a lifetime event. During Big Dance week there will be large scale events that people can be involved in. One of the highlights for the week will be Big Street Dance Day on 14 July which are mass participation events in major cities across the UK. London’s day will be headed up by Wayne McGregor, who is inspiring dance groups in all different styles across the capital to create a show-stopping performance for thousands of people in Trafalgar Square. Realising your potential as a dance teacher The stars on stage might be some of the most visible faces in the dance world, but there are thousands of people working in a variety of places who have translated their passion for dance into a lifelong career. Dance teaching can provide a hugely rewarding path and offers a range of opportunities whether you are a young student just starting out or you are a professional dancer looking for a career change. And with an accredited qualification in dance you can open your horizons to a much wider range of opportunities across the private and public sectors. There are many training opportunities that will prepare you not only for the rigours of teaching a variety of classes each day, but also for the practicalities of running a dance school. Many higher level dance teaching qualifications are also accredited by the Regulatory Bodies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ofqual, DCELLS, CCEA). This means that, as well as standing alone as respected dance teaching qualifications giving you the opportunity to teach across a wide variety

of dance genres, they can contribute towards other higher level qualifications. The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) provides initial teacher training with the Level 3 Diploma in Dance Instruction (DDI) and Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) that have been designed to meet the needs of future dance teachers. The DDI is aimed at anyone 17 years or older who wishes to begin training as a dance teacher and the DDE offers students 18 years or older, who have already achieved their Level 3, the opportunity to complete their training and become a fully qualified and accredited ISTD dance teacher. And this is all achievable within a three-year programme of study at a range of Approved Dance Centres throughout the EU. In addition, the ISTD has a wide selection of advanced dance teacher training qualifications, with two different routes offering both non-accredited qualifications (the Licentiate and Fellowship) and three brand new accredited qualifications: the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy
(geared towards experienced dance teachers and professional dancers alike), two progression routes onto Middlesex University validated awards, the BA (Hons) in Professional Practice and the MA in Professional Practice: Dance Technique Pedagogy. For those interested in teaching in the maintained or lifelong learning sectors, then it is worth considering the BA to progress onto a PGCE course or the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy, which covers all the requirements of the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). The right teacher training will give you the necessary skills, discipline and qualifications to take you wherever you want to be in the dance world. So stop thinking about it, and get started today! DanceEast’s Rural Retreat At a recent meeting in Suffolk, 26 emerging and future dance leaders representing 13 nationalities, chosen for their potential to inspire and move forward leadership of dance companies, called for dance to be re-branded to break away from dance form fragmentation. The Rural Retreats, produced by DanceEast, focused on the challenges faced and skillsset needed by Artistic Directors in dance, and tackle the major problem of the lack of training and formal professional development for Artistic Directors. Guest speakers who are leading figures in advertising, sport and the arts shared their experiences, including Sir John Hegarty, Worldwide Creative Director and Founder of advertising agency, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, Daniel Topolski, writer, broadcaster and former Olympic rowing coach, Alistair Spalding, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Sadler’s Wells; David McAllister AM, Artistic Director of Australian Ballet; Carrie Cracknell, co-Artistic Director of the Gate and Kathleen Soriano, Director of Exhibitions, Royal Academy of Arts. The group of future leaders agreed collectively that dance needs to re-brand under one umbrella, “Brand Dance”, to inspire and communicate dance as an inclusive, relevant and accessible art form – tackling its elitist image. There was also much discussion about
the important qualities of Artistic Directors and the group were particularly taken by the concept of the three “i”s which Sir John Hegarty spoke about as being crucial for leaders to focus on “Inspire, Inform, Innovate” The group agreed that they admired leaders who are honest, have integrity, are authentic, inspire and can tell compelling stories that entice us to join in with their vision and who are inclusive. They also talked about good leaders recognising the need to surround themselves with the right teams, and discussed the fact that great dance leaders are fearless but connected to the wider world and are able to filter what’s important and to solve problems creatively. Molnar, Artistic Director of Ballet British Columbia, spoke on behalf of those who talk part in the retreat at a reception held in the House of Commons today, Monday 9 January. They commented “We are 26 future leaders in dance from across the globe to discuss the future of DANCE, and when we say DANCE we mean DANCE in all its forms. As a group we’ve discovered a shared purpose and readiness to embrace the opportunity for change.” Clara Barberá Tomas, an independent choreographer and former Rambert dancer said: “What this retreat has done for me is reinforce my faith in dance as a universal platform, that is able to, and should be able to, reflect new political, economic and social contexts and react to them. What we need is for politicians all over the world to recognise the power of dance as an art form and as an essential part in the development of functional human beings, in order for us to keep growing as an industry. The challenge for dance is to make itself relevant in the next economic context all over the world.” The final word goes to Assis Carreiro, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of DanceEast, who says: ‘I was overwhelmed by the passion, rigour and huge intelligence shared by all 26 participants who came together this weekend. It was an intensive time of deep thinking, inspirational guest speakers and a very unique opportunity to come together to share so much in a very nurturing environment filled with camaraderie, non stop discussion and commitment to dance. I am so proud to be producing an initiative that is very needed by the art form.’
